Education has always represented more than earning a degree to me—it is a responsibility to grow, serve, and create opportunities for others. As an immigrant from Nigeria and a first-generation college student in the United States, I have learned that perseverance, faith, discipline, and purpose are essential to achieving meaningful success. I am a senior at Rutgers University–Newark pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and Behavior on the pre-medical track. Throughout my journey, I have balanced challenging coursework, employment, financial responsibilities, and community service, experiences that have strengthened my resilience and commitment to helping others. Working as an ophthalmic technician has shown me the importance of compassionate healthcare. Through patient care and assisting physicians, I have learned that medicine is not only about treating conditions but also about restoring hope and dignity. This experience has inspired my goal of becoming a physician, specifically a neurosurgeon or neuro-ophthalmologist. Beyond healthcare, I serve through tutoring, mentoring, and campus ministry.     My family’s journey to the United States has profoundly shaped my beliefs about education, ambition, perseverance, and my responsibility to contribute to others. As immigrants, my family came to America believing that education could create opportunities not only for one individual, but for an entire family and community. Although our transition was filled with challenges, my parents consistently taught me to aim for excellence, remain disciplined, and never allow difficult circumstances to determine the limits of my future. When my family and I moved to the United States, we arrived during the winter and initially lived with another family for approximately three months. We were grateful for their generosity, but living together created inconveniences for everyone. Eventually, we moved to New Jersey to establish greater independence and stability. Financial challenges soon became part of our daily lives. While attending high school, I worked full-time to help support my parents while continuing my education. Balancing employment, school, and family responsibilities was difficult, but my family taught me that perseverance and hard work are essential when pursuing a better life. My parents placed a strong value on education, even when financial circumstances made it challenging. They reminded me that knowledge is something no hardship can permanently take away. Their sacrifices inspired me to pursue academic excellence and develop a passion for science. During high school, I joined the Einstein Dreamers Research Team in Newark, where I worked with Dr. Agapito and fellow students studying ants, planarians, and C. elegans to explore ways research could advance human health. That experience helped transform my curiosity into a desire to build a career dedicated to science and medicine. Today, I am pursuing a degree in Neuroscience and Behavior on a pre-medical track at Rutgers University–Newark. My immigrant experience has strengthened my career aspirations and motivated me to pursue a future in medicine where I can improve the lives of others. As an Ophthalmic Technician, I work directly with patients, record medical histories, assess vision and intraocular pressure, and perform diagnostic imaging. Each interaction reminds me that healthcare is not only about scientific knowledge, but also compassion, communication, and service.     I believe selflessness is measured not only by what we achieve for ourselves, but by how willing we are to use our time, abilities, and experiences to make life better for others. My journey as an immigrant, student, healthcare professional, mentor, and community leader has taught me that meaningful success is built through relationships, service, and helping others along the way. One experience that reflects my commitment to helping those in need occurred during Christmas in 2021, when I volunteered with Greater Life Inc. in New Jersey. While many people spend the holiday focused on their own celebrations, I chose to spend part of mine reaching out to children of diverse ages and backgrounds. I understood that the holiday season can be especially difficult for families facing financial hardship, loneliness, or other challenges. Through volunteering, I had the opportunity to interact with and encourage children, helping them feel welcomed, valued, and included. Seeing their excitement and appreciation reminded me that acts of service do not have to be extraordinary to make a lasting difference. My commitment to community service also extends to my work as a mentor, tutor, and student leader. Having personally experienced the challenges of adapting to a new country and balancing responsibilities, I understand how important encouragement and guidance can be.     One of the biggest challenges my family faced when moving to the United States was rebuilding our lives from the ground up while adapting to a new country, culture, and financial reality. My family and I arrived during the winter, making an already difficult transition even more challenging. When we first arrived, we lived with another family for approximately three months. Although we were grateful for their generosity, sharing a home created inconveniences for both families. Eventually, we moved to New Jersey so we could establish greater independence and stability. Financial hardship became one of the defining challenges of my immigrant experience. As a young immigrant and first-generation college student, I learned early that pursuing an education would require sacrifice. While attending high school, I worked full-time to help support my parents and contribute to our household. Balancing demanding work hours, academics, and family responsibilities was exhausting, but it taught me discipline, maturity, and perseverance. Rather than allowing my circumstances to limit my ambitions, they strengthened my determination to create a better future for my family. Despite these responsibilities, I remained committed to academic and extracurricular opportunities. From March 2018 through June 2019, I participated in the Einstein Dreamers Research Team in Newark, where I worked alongside Dr. Agapito and fellow students studying the habitual lives of ants, planarians, and C. elegans to explore ways scientific research could advance human health. This experience introduced me to the power of research and strengthened my interest in science and medicine. I also became involved with the New Jersey Academy of Science in Union, New Jersey, where I have served as Social Media Director since October 2019. In this position, I have helped oversee initiatives to increase awareness of STEM opportunities among New Jersey students.     Bishop Mozell Haymon’s belief that “life begins with sobriety” speaks to more than abstaining from drugs or alcohol. To me, sobriety represents clarity, healing, and the opportunity to reclaim one’s future. While I have not personally struggled with substance addiction, I have seen how addiction and mental health challenges can affect families and communities. Witnessing those struggles has taught me that recovery is not simply about breaking a habit—it is about restoring hope, rebuilding relationships, and giving people the chance to live with dignity again. Growing up as an immigrant, I quickly learned that many people suffer in silence. In many communities, substance use disorders and mental health conditions carry a stigma that prevents individuals from seeking help. Rather than receiving compassion, they are often judged or isolated. This has shown me how important it is to approach every person with empathy instead of assumptions. Recovery is rarely a straight path, and those who are willing to seek help deserve encouragement, not condemnation. As I pursued my education in neuroscience and behavior, I became fascinated by the biological and psychological factors that influence addiction and recovery. Studying the brain has helped me understand that addiction is not simply a matter of willpower. It is a complex medical condition involving changes in brain chemistry, decision-making, and behavior. This knowledge has strengthened my desire to become a physician who treats patients with both scientific expertise and genuine compassion. My work as an ophthalmic technician has further reinforced this perspective.     Olivia Rodrigo’s music resonates with me because it captures the emotions that often accompany growth, uncertainty, and resilience. While many of her songs focus on relationships, the themes of perseverance, self-discovery, and overcoming disappointment mirror my own journey as an immigrant, a first-generation college student, and an aspiring physician. One lyric that particularly stands out comes from the grudge: “It takes strength to forgive, but I don’t feel strong.” Although Rodrigo wrote these words in a different context, they remind me that healing from life’s setbacks is rarely immediate. There have been moments when financial hardship, academic obstacles, and personal responsibilities left me feeling discouraged. Learning to move forward despite those challenges has required patience with both my circumstances and myself. Another lyric that deeply resonates with me is from hope ur ok: “They say these are the golden years, but I wish I could disappear.” College is often described as the best time of one’s life, yet my experience has been far more complex. While many classmates focused solely on academics or social activities, I balanced demanding science courses with work, research, leadership responsibilities, and helping care for my young niece. At times, the pressure of tuition costs and the uncertainty surrounding my education made it difficult to appreciate the present. Nevertheless, those experiences strengthened my resilience and taught me that growth often occurs during the most challenging seasons. Perhaps the lyric that best represents my determination comes from get him back!: “I am my father’s daughter, so maybe I could fix him.” Although playful in its original context, the idea of wanting to “fix” what is broken reflects my passion for medicine. My dream of becoming a neurosurgeon stems from a desire to help patients facing devastating neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injuries. Every obstacle I overcome reminds me why I chose this path. I do not simply want a successful career; I want to use science, compassion, and innovation to restore hope to families experiencing some of life’s most difficult moments. Rodrigo’s music also reminds me that success is rarely linear. There are moments of self-doubt, frustration, and disappointment, but there are also moments of growth, gratitude, and renewed purpose.     New Beginnings Immigrant Scholarship
    My immigrant experience has been one of the most defining parts of my life, shaping my perspective, my values, and my aspirations for the future. Growing up in Nigeria, I learned early that education, faith, resilience, and service to others are powerful tools for creating opportunities. When I immigrated to the United States, I entered a new environment filled with unfamiliar challenges, including adapting to a different culture, educational system, and way of life.     Balancing the responsibilities of being a student while also caring for a child has been one of the most challenging yet transformative experiences of my life. Although I am not currently a parent, I have taken on the responsibility of caring for my niece, and that role has taught me many of the same lessons that come with parenting: patience, sacrifice, responsibility, and unconditional support. Managing my academic responsibilities while ensuring that my niece has the care, attention, and guidance she needs has required me to develop stronger time management skills, resilience, and a deeper sense of purpose. One of the greatest challenges has been finding the balance between my education and my responsibilities as a caregiver. As a college student, I have had to dedicate countless hours to attending classes, studying, completing assignments, conducting research, and preparing for my future career. At the same time, caring for my niece requires emotional availability, consistency, and commitment. There have been moments when I have had to choose between staying up late to finish schoolwork and making sure she receives the support and attention she needs.     One problem in healthcare that I refuse to accept as inevitable is that a person’s race, socioeconomic status, or community can determine the quality and timeliness of the care they receive. In a world of remarkable medical advancements, no one should experience poorer health outcomes because they lack access to quality healthcare or because their symptoms are overlooked. Yet health disparities continue to affect millions of people, limiting opportunities for early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. This challenge has shaped both my academic journey and the physician I aspire to become. Growing up in Nigeria and later immigrating to the United States exposed me to two different healthcare systems that shared a common problem: unequal access to care. I saw families delay medical treatment because of financial hardship, limited healthcare resources, or lack of education. Even in the United States, I realized that advanced medical technology alone does not eliminate disparities. Many underserved communities still face delayed diagnoses, reduced access to specialists, and poorer long-term outcomes. Instead of accepting these inequities as unavoidable, I became determined to understand their root causes. My research experiences gave me that opportunity. At Rutgers Medical School, I studied genetic mechanisms using Caenorhabditis elegans, where I learned how scientific discoveries can eventually improve patient care. Later, I contributed to public health research examining cognitive decline among Black American men and cancer survivorship in Nigeria. These projects taught me that health disparities are driven not only by biology but also by social determinants of health, limited representation in research, and barriers to preventive care. They reinforced my belief that meaningful change requires both scientific innovation and community engagement. Working as an ophthalmic technician has strengthened this perspective. Every day, I care for patients whose vision loss might have been prevented through earlier intervention. Many delayed seeking care because they lacked insurance, transportation, or awareness of routine eye examinations. These experiences remind me that medicine is not simply about treating disease—it is about creating systems that help patients receive care before permanent damage occurs. To address this problem, I hope to combine neuroscience, clinical medicine, and biomedical informatics to improve healthcare delivery. My goal is to develop artificial intelligence tools that integrate with electronic health records to identify patients at risk for delayed diagnoses. These systems could recognize concerning patterns, recommend earlier referrals, and help physicians provide more consistent, equitable care. Technology should enhance clinical decision-making, ensuring that fewer patients are overlooked because of systemic barriers. Education will also be central to my work. Throughout college, I have tutored more than one hundred students in mathematics and science, learning that knowledge empowers people to make better decisions. As a physician, I hope to partner with schools, community organizations, and faith-based institutions to improve health literacy and promote preventive care. Empowered patients are more likely to recognize symptoms early, seek appropriate medical attention, and actively participate in their healthcare.     Breast education is important to me because it represents one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to improve health outcomes through knowledge, early detection, and patient empowerment. As a neuroscience and behavior student on the pre-medical track and an ophthalmic technician, I have witnessed how education transforms healthcare. Many diseases become significantly more treatable when recognized early, but this is only possible when patients understand what symptoms to look for and feel comfortable seeking medical attention. Breast health is no different. Although advances in screening and treatment have greatly improved survival rates, too many individuals still face delayed diagnoses because of misinformation, fear, cultural stigma, or limited access to accurate health education. Growing up in Nigeria and later immigrating to the United States, I experienced two healthcare systems with different resources and approaches to preventive medicine. In many underserved communities, conversations about breast health are often avoided due to cultural beliefs, embarrassment, or the misconception that breast cancer only affects older women or those with a family history. These misunderstandings can prevent individuals from performing regular self-awareness practices, attending recommended screenings, or discussing concerns with healthcare providers. Witnessing these disparities has strengthened my commitment to promoting health education that is accessible, culturally sensitive, and grounded in scientific evidence. My academic journey has further reinforced this passion. Through research at Rutgers Medical School, where I studied genetic mechanisms using Caenorhabditis elegans, I learned that scientific discoveries have little impact unless they are translated into better patient care.     As a neuroscience and behavior student on the pre-medical track, I have become increasingly aware that some of the most impactful medical conditions are not necessarily the rarest, but the ones that are repeatedly overlooked. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME) affect millions of people worldwide, yet many patients spend years without a diagnosis because their symptoms are dismissed as “normal hormonal changes” or misunderstood as unrelated psychiatric disorders. This gap between scientific knowledge and clinical practice is what draws me to this area of women’s health. My passion for medicine has always centered on improving neurological health and ensuring that every patient is heard. As an ophthalmic technician, I work closely with patients from diverse backgrounds, many of whom silently carry chronic conditions that affect their quality of life. My research experiences at Rutgers Medical School and in public health have also taught me that health disparities often exist because certain populations are underrepresented in research or because providers lack adequate training. Women’s health, particularly conditions like PMDD and PME, represents one of those disparities. During my undergraduate research, I investigated genetic mechanisms using Caenorhabditis elegans in the Pathology Department at Rutgers Medical School and later contributed to public health research examining cognitive decline, cancer survivorship, and health disparities affecting underserved communities. These experiences strengthened my appreciation for evidence-based medicine and reinforced my desire to bridge laboratory discoveries with patient care. They also taught me that meaningful healthcare innovation begins with asking why certain populations continue to be overlooked despite overwhelming evidence of need. As a future physician, I hope to combine neuroscience, clinical research, and biomedical informatics to improve the recognition of PMDD and PME. One concrete way I plan to contribute is by developing artificial intelligence and electronic health record screening tools that identify symptom patterns associated with these disorders.     THE LAST MARKER Most people would laugh if I told them the most stressful day of my college career began with a missing dry-erase marker. As a neuroscience major, I was used to handling real academic challenges. I had survived difficult calculus exams, late-night chemistry labs, and countless hours analyzing research articles. Compared to those experiences, a marker seemed insignificant—hardly something worth worrying about. Until the day of our final research presentation. My team had spent an entire semester developing a model explaining how neural networks process visual information. While everyone else planned to rely on PowerPoint slides, I volunteered to explain the mathematical model on the whiteboard. Writing each equation step by step would allow our audience to see how every concept connected instead of simply reading formulas from a screen. There was only one problem. The classroom’s whiteboard worked properly with only one type of blue dry-erase marker, and the department kept exactly one in the supply cabinet. When I unlocked the cabinet fifteen minutes before our presentation, the marker was gone. “It’s just a marker,” one of my teammates said with a laugh. “Use another color.” I tried. The black marker was completely dry. The red marker skipped every other word. The green marker left thick streaks that made mathematical symbols nearly impossible to distinguish. Every attempt made the board look more confusing. My teammates were calm, but my heart raced. Without a functioning marker, I would have to abandon the teaching method I had carefully prepared for weeks. I searched every classroom nearby, checked every drawer, and even emptied my backpack onto a table. Students passing by watched with amusement as I searched with the urgency of someone looking for lost research data. I scribbled circles across a sheet of scrap paper, shook the marker repeatedly, and hoped there was enough ink left for one final use. Slowly, the faded lines became darker. It wasn’t perfect, but it would work. As I stood before the class, I carefully filled the whiteboard with equations, diagrams, and sketches of neurons communicating across synapses. Instead of rushing through slides, I built the model piece by piece, answering questions as each equation appeared. By the end of the presentation, even students outside our discipline said they could follow the logic behind our research. Afterward, my professor smiled and said, “Sometimes the simplest presentation creates the deepest understanding.” Walking back to the lab, I realized the marker had never been the real conflict. It represented something much larger. Science often depends on details that appear trivial to everyone else—a mislabeled sample, an overlooked decimal point, a loose wire, or a nearly empty marker. Artificial intelligence and machine learning represent some of the most transformative technologies of our time, and I am committed to using them to improve healthcare, particularly in neuroscience and ophthalmology. Although I have not yet built a full-scale AI application, I have gained meaningful hands-on experience by integrating AI into my academic, clinical, and research learning. I regularly use AI-assisted tools to analyze scientific literature, interpret complex neurological concepts, organize research findings, and strengthen my understanding of data-driven medicine. Rather than relying on AI to replace critical thinking, I use it to enhance my ability to evaluate evidence, identify patterns, and explore innovative solutions to medical challenges. The more I learned, however, the more I realized how devastating it is when diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia slowly rob individuals of their memories, independence, and identity. What was once a scientific interest quickly became a personal mission. As a first-generation immigrant from Nigeria, a senior at Rutgers University–Newark majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior on the pre-medical track, and an aspiring neurosurgeon, I have come to understand that Alzheimer’s disease is not merely a neurological disorder—it is a disease that affects entire families, caregivers, and communities. It has strengthened my commitment to advancing neuroscience while advocating for compassionate, equitable healthcare. Throughout my undergraduate education, I have learned that Alzheimer’s disease extends far beyond memory loss. In my neuroscience coursework, I studied the anatomy and physiology of the central nervous system, the role of neurons and synaptic transmission, and how neurodegeneration progressively damages the hippocampus and cerebral cortex—regions responsible for learning, memory, and cognition. I learned about the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques and tau protein tangles, chronic neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and neuronal death that ultimately impair communication between brain cells. These concepts transformed Alzheimer’s from a disease described in textbooks into one I could understand at the cellular and molecular levels.     Everyone has something that makes them stand out. For me, it has always been my height. At 6’2”, I have been the “tall guy” for as long as I can remember. Growing up, people assumed I played basketball or was naturally athletic. When I told them I wasn’t, the surprise was almost always followed by the same question: “Then why are you so tall?” It became a running joke, one I learned to laugh at. While my height made me noticeable, it wasn’t what truly defined me. What makes me different is that I have always been deeply curious. While others saw my height first, I wanted people to know me for my character, my work ethic, and my desire to help others. I found purpose not on a basketball court but in classrooms, hospitals, and community service. As an immigrant from Nigeria, I learned early that opportunities are valuable and should never be taken for granted.     My journey has been shaped by a passion for learning, service, and creating opportunities for others. I am a rising senior at Rutgers University–Newark majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior with a Pre-Med concentration. As a first-generation immigrant, I have experienced firsthand the power of education and the difference that mentorship can make in a person’s life. These experiences have motivated me to not only pursue my own goals but also help others recognize and achieve their potential. Throughout my academic journey, I have discovered that education is one of the most powerful tools for transforming communities. My experiences as a STEM tutor, mentor, and student leader have shown me that teaching is not simply about sharing information; it is about inspiring confidence, encouraging curiosity, and helping students overcome barriers. Whether I am helping a student understand a difficult concept or encouraging someone to pursue a career in science, I have seen how meaningful guidance can change the way individuals view themselves and their possibilities. My passion for education is closely connected to my interest in healthcare and science. Through my studies in neuroscience and my work as an Ophthalmic Technician, I have learned the importance of making complex information understandable and accessible. As a future physician and educator, I hope to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and the communities that need it most. I want to educate patients about their health, mentor future healthcare professionals, and contribute to a culture where learning and discovery are accessible to everyone. Beyond the classroom, I have embraced leadership opportunities through student organizations, campus initiatives, and community service. These experiences have strengthened my belief that education extends beyond textbooks—it is about empowering people to become leaders, problem-solvers, and contributors to society. I strive to create environments where individuals feel supported, valued, and capable of achieving their goals.     Entering higher education as an immigrant has been both one of the greatest opportunities and one of the greatest challenges of my life. As a first-generation college student, I quickly realized that earning a degree involved much more than attending classes. It meant learning to navigate unfamiliar systems, balancing financial responsibilities, and finding opportunities without having someone who had already walked the path before me. Although those challenges often felt overwhelming, they also shaped my resilience, strengthened my character, and clarified my purpose. Growing up, I learned that education is one of the most powerful tools for changing the trajectory of a person’s life. That belief motivated me to persevere through financial hardships, academic obstacles, and moments of uncertainty. Rather than allowing those experiences to discourage me, I chose to view them as opportunities to grow. Every challenge reminded me why I wanted to pursue a career dedicated to serving others and improving lives. Today, I am a rising senior at Rutgers University–Newark majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior with a Pre-Med concentration. Throughout my college journey, I have intentionally sought experiences that would prepare me to become both an excellent physician and a compassionate leader. Working as an Ophthalmic Technician has given me the opportunity to care for patients from diverse backgrounds while witnessing firsthand how unequal access to healthcare affects individuals and families. Those experiences have reinforced my commitment to reducing health disparities through medicine, research, and public health advocacy. Being an immigrant has also taught me the importance of community. I understand how valuable encouragement and mentorship can be because I have often relied on the guidance of professors, mentors, and leaders who believed in my potential. That is why I have made it a priority to give back by mentoring students, tutoring STEM subjects, serving in student leadership, and leading initiatives within my campus ministry. I want others, especially students from backgrounds similar to mine, to know that they belong in higher education and that their circumstances do not define their future. Looking ahead, my goal is to become a physician-scientist who combines neuroscience research with compassionate patient care to improve healthcare for underserved communities. I hope to contribute to discoveries that make healthcare more accessible, equitable, and effective while mentoring the next generation of students pursuing careers in STEM. My experience as an immigrant has taught me that success is not measured only by personal achievement but by the opportunities we create for others. I also think about building healthcare systems that are equitable, accessible, and capable of improving lives for generations. I hope my work as a future physician-scientist will help create a world where quality healthcare is not determined by a person’s income, location, or background, but is treated as a fundamental opportunity for everyone. As a rising senior at Rutgers University–Newark majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior with a Pre-Med concentration, I have seen firsthand how health disparities affect individuals and families. These experiences have shown me that prevention, education, and early intervention are among the most sustainable investments we can make in public health. When diseases are detected early and communities have access to quality care, people are healthier, healthcare costs decrease, and future generations benefit. In high school, I conducted research on child marriage and obstetric fistula, studying how preventable health conditions continue to impact women because of limited access to education and healthcare. That experience taught me that solving health challenges requires more than medical treatment. It requires research, advocacy, education, and policies that address the root causes of inequality. Since then, I have pursued research opportunities that strengthen my understanding of how scientific discoveries can improve patient outcomes and advance healthcare. I also believe sustainability depends on investing in people. Through tutoring STEM subjects, mentoring students, and serving in leadership roles within my university and community, I have learned that empowering others creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond one individual.     To me, the American Dream is not simply about achieving financial success or personal recognition. It is about having the opportunity to overcome adversity, pursue your purpose, and create a better future for yourself while opening doors for others. It is the belief that your circumstances should never determine your potential, and that with hard work, resilience, and access to opportunity, you can make a meaningful impact on the lives of those around you. As an immigrant and a rising senior at Rutgers University–Newark majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior with a Pre-Med concentration, I have experienced both the challenges and opportunities that define the American Dream. My journey has not always been easy. Financial hardships, balancing rigorous coursework with work responsibilities, and navigating higher education as a first-generation college student have tested my perseverance. Rather than allowing those obstacles to discourage me, they have strengthened my determination to succeed and to use my education in service of others.     Growing up, I learned early that where a person lives or how much they earn can have a significant impact on the healthcare they receive. Seeing these disparities inspired me to pursue a career where I could help close that gap. Today, I am a rising senior at Rutgers University–Newark majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior with a Pre-Med concentration, and every experience I’ve had has reinforced my desire to become a physician who not only treats patients but also improves healthcare through research, innovation, and service. One experience that greatly shaped my perspective was conducting research in high school on child marriage and obstetric fistula. Learning about the lifelong physical, emotional, and social consequences many women face because of preventable circumstances opened my eyes to the importance of healthcare access and education. It made me realize that medicine extends far beyond the walls of a hospital—it also involves advocacy, prevention, and creating systems that allow people to live healthier lives. That project sparked my curiosity about how research can influence policy, improve healthcare delivery, and create meaningful change for vulnerable populations. Since then, I’ve intentionally sought opportunities that would prepare me for that responsibility. Working as an Ophthalmic Technician has allowed me to care for patients from diverse backgrounds while assisting with diagnostic testing and supporting physicians in preserving patients’ vision. Every patient interaction reminds me that medicine is just as much about compassion and listening as it is about science. My research experiences have also shown me how discoveries in the laboratory can eventually improve patient care, strengthening my interest in combining clinical medicine with scientific research to solve complex health challenges. Outside of healthcare, I’ve always believed that leadership means serving others. Whether mentoring students, tutoring STEM courses, serving in student leadership, or leading initiatives through my campus ministry, I’ve tried to use my experiences to encourage and support those around me. Watching someone gain confidence academically or personally has been just as rewarding as my own achievements because it reminds me that success is most meaningful when it helps others succeed too. These experiences have strengthened my communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills while reinforcing the importance of using my knowledge to uplift others. My goal is to become a physician-scientist who advances equitable healthcare through neuroscience research, compassionate patient care, and public health advocacy. I hope to contribute to discoveries that improve lives while ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible regardless of someone’s background or circumstances. Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of my education and allow me to continue pursuing opportunities in research, clinical service, and community engagement. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to becoming the kind of physician and leader who uses science, compassion, and service to create lasting change in communities across the United States and around the world.
