One of the most significant challenges I still face is financial hardship in continuing my studies. Despite this, I remain committed to my academic and career goals. I see this not only as a personal test but as an opportunity to show others facing similar circumstances that education and hard work can break cycles of limitation, even when the odds don't look favorable. Over the course of my academic journey, I have worked to translate that determination into meaningful research and service. Through early research experience studying organisms and their relevance to human health, I discovered how deeply science and discovery could be tied to improving people's lives. That interest has carried into my current work as an ophthalmic technician, where I perform diagnostic imaging such as OCT and fundus photography and see firsthand how directly science and technology shape a patient's care. It has also sparked my interest in how artificial intelligence could help physicians detect neurological and ophthalmic disease earlier and more accurately, especially in communities that lack access to specialists. My long-term goal is to use my education and career in neuroscience as a platform to expand access to care for underserved communities, both here and back home in Nigeria. I hope to contribute to research that improves diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes, while also mentoring other first-generation and international students who are facing the same uncertainty I've faced — financially, academically, and otherwise. I want to be proof that a difficult starting point doesn't have to determine the ceiling of what's possible. I am currently pursuing my bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, and I want to tell you about the woman who made sure I would still be in school today: my guardian, Ms. Shirley. Ms. Shirley is Jamaican-American, and she is not my biological mother — but she took me in as her son at a point when I had nowhere else to go. I was close to ending up on the street with no place to live, and she opened her home to me without hesitation. She didn't just give me a roof; she gave me a family when I had none, and she has never let me forget that finishing school was still possible, even when everything around me said otherwise. Since October of 2024, things have not been easy. I've faced real mistreatment during that time, and there were moments when it would have been easier to give up on school altogether and focus only on survival. But Ms. Shirley kept pushing. She reminded me, again and again, that walking away from my education because of how I was being treated would mean letting that treatment win. She believed in my ability to finish long before I fully believed it myself, and that belief became something I could hold onto on the hardest days. Now, this is not to say that everything has been smooth since then. I am currently working to pay off school debts on my own, on top of coursework, and there are still days that feel like an uphill climb. But I want to emphasize that I will be forever grateful to have someone who took me in with an open heart and refused to let me disappear into my circumstances. Ms. Shirley, I have so much determination left in me because of your belief in me. Because of her example, I have stayed committed to earning my degree in Neuroscience, even while managing work and financial pressure at the same time. She taught me that stability doesn't have to come from blood relation — it can come from someone choosing to show up for you, consistently, when it matters most. That lesson has shaped how I want to move through the rest of my life: with the same steadiness she showed me, extended outward to other people who might be one hard moment away from losing their footing. So now, as a student working toward a science degree while rebuilding my own stability, I am staying in school, paying down what I owe piece by piece, and refusing to let my circumstances define my ceiling. I know firsthand what it feels like to be on the edge of losing everything, and I know firsthand what it feels like to have someone refuse to let that happen. I want my future in neuroscience to be built on that same refusal — to keep showing up, to keep pushing forward, and eventually, to be in a position to do for someone else what Ms. Shirley did for me. This scholarship would mean more to me than financial relief, though that relief would matter enormously right now. As a Christian undergraduate student, I have learned that serving others is not something that should only happen when it is convenient. Through my involvement with Champions Royal Assembly in Queens, New York, I have had the opportunity to serve my local community in many different ways. As a resident pastor, I help with outreach, encourage young people, participate in church programs, and support members of the community who may be facing difficult circumstances. I have learned that sometimes service is as simple as listening to someone, encouraging them when they feel discouraged, or helping them recognize that their circumstances do not determine their future. My church involvement has also developed my leadership skills. I have learned that leadership is not simply about having a position or being the person in front of a room. Balancing my church responsibilities with college, work, and family responsibilities has not always been easy, but those experiences have strengthened my discipline and perseverance. This experience introduced me to the power of research and strengthened my interest in science and medicine. I also became involved with the New Jersey Academy of Science in Union, New Jersey, where I have served as Social Media Director since October 2019. In this position, I have helped oversee initiatives to increase awareness of STEM opportunities among New Jersey students. By creating and maintaining an online presence and implementing outreach strategies through social media, I have developed leadership, communication, and organizational skills while encouraging other students to pursue careers in science. Today, I am pursuing a degree in Neuroscience and Behavior on a pre-medical track at Rutgers University–Newark. My journey has included research, student leadership, mentoring, tutoring, and professional healthcare experience. To me, sobriety represents clarity, healing, and the opportunity to reclaim one’s future. While I have not personally struggled with substance addiction, I have seen how addiction and mental health challenges can affect families and communities. Witnessing those struggles has taught me that recovery is not simply about breaking a habit—it is about restoring hope, rebuilding relationships, and giving people the chance to live with dignity again. Growing up as an immigrant, I quickly learned that many people suffer in silence. In many communities, substance use disorders and mental health conditions carry a stigma that prevents individuals from seeking help. Rather than receiving compassion, they are often judged or isolated. This has shown me how important it is to approach every person with empathy instead of assumptions. Recovery is rarely a straight path, and those who are willing to seek help deserve encouragement, not condemnation. As I pursued my education in neuroscience and behavior, I became fascinated by the biological and psychological factors that influence addiction and recovery. Studying the brain has helped me understand that addiction is not simply a matter of willpower. It is a complex medical condition involving changes in brain chemistry, decision-making, and behavior. This knowledge has strengthened my desire to become a physician who treats patients with both scientific expertise and genuine compassion. Even in the United States, I realized that advanced medical technology alone does not eliminate disparities. Many underserved communities still face delayed diagnoses, reduced access to specialists, and poorer long-term outcomes. Instead of accepting these inequities as unavoidable, I became determined to understand their root causes. My research experiences gave me that opportunity. At Rutgers Medical School, I studied genetic mechanisms using Caenorhabditis elegans, where I learned how scientific discoveries can eventually improve patient care. Later, I contributed to public health research examining cognitive decline among Black American men and cancer survivorship in Nigeria. These projects taught me that health disparities are driven not only by biology but also by social determinants of health, limited representation in research, and barriers to preventive care. My research experiences at Rutgers Medical School and in public health have also taught me that health disparities often exist because certain populations are underrepresented in research or because providers lack adequate training. As a neuroscience major, I was used to handling real academic challenges. I had survived difficult calculus exams, late-night chemistry labs, and countless hours analyzing research articles. Compared to those experiences, a marker seemed insignificant—hardly something worth worrying about. Until the day of our final research presentation. My team had spent an entire semester developing a model explaining how neural networks process visual information. While everyone else planned to rely on PowerPoint slides, I volunteered to explain the mathematical model on the whiteboard. Writing each equation step by step would allow our audience to see how every concept connected instead of simply reading formulas from a screen. There was only one problem. The classroom’s whiteboard worked properly with only one type of blue dry-erase marker, and the department kept exactly one in the supply cabinet. When I unlocked the cabinet fifteen minutes before our presentation, the marker was gone. “It’s just a marker,” one of my teammates said with a laugh. “Use another color.” I tried. The black marker was completely dry. The red marker skipped every other word. The green marker left thick streaks that made mathematical symbols nearly impossible to distinguish. Every attempt made the board look more confusing. My teammates were calm, but my heart raced. I regularly use AI-assisted tools to analyze scientific literature, interpret complex neurological concepts, organize research findings, and strengthen my understanding of data-driven medicine. Rather than relying on AI to replace critical thinking, I use it to enhance my ability to evaluate evidence, identify patterns, and explore innovative solutions to medical challenges. This experience has taught me that AI is most powerful when combined with human expertise, ethical decision-making, and compassion. My work as an ophthalmic technician has further deepened my appreciation for the impact of artificial intelligence in medicine. Every day, I perform diagnostic imaging such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), retinal photography, corneal topography, endothelial cell counts, and other specialized ophthalmic tests. Many of these technologies are increasingly enhanced by machine learning algorithms that assist physicians in detecting glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other sight-threatening diseases at earlier stages. Seeing these advancements in clinical practice has inspired me to explore how AI can improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce healthcare disparities, and ultimately preserve patients’ vision and quality of life. My long-term goal is to become a neurosurgeon while contributing to the development of AI-driven technologies that improve neurological diagnosis, surgical planning, and patient outcomes. I am particularly interested in combining neuroscience, biomedical informatics, and machine learning to identify neurological diseases earlier, personalize treatment plans, and accelerate medical research for disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injuries. As a first-generation immigrant from Nigeria, a senior at Rutgers University–Newark majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior on the pre-medical track, and an aspiring neurosurgeon, I have come to understand that Alzheimer’s disease is not merely a neurological disorder—it is a disease that affects entire families, caregivers, and communities. It has strengthened my commitment to advancing neuroscience while advocating for compassionate, equitable healthcare. Throughout my undergraduate education, I have learned that Alzheimer’s disease extends far beyond memory loss. Growing up, people assumed I played basketball or was naturally athletic. When I told them I wasn’t, the surprise was almost always followed by the same question: “Then why are you so tall?” It became a running joke, one I learned to laugh at. While my height made me noticeable, it wasn’t what truly defined me. What makes me different is that I have always been deeply curious. While others saw my height first, I wanted people to know me for my character, my work ethic, and my desire to help others. I found purpose not on a basketball court but in classrooms, hospitals, and community service.
