    A social issue I care deeply about is the treatment of foster children and homeless people. Throughout my life, I have met and served many individuals from these backgrounds, witnessing what I would describe as the lowest points of despair. People in these situations often lose hope, believing they have nothing to offer the world. At Howard University, I have also seen success stories of individuals who overcame the challenges of foster care or homelessness to pursue their dreams in college. The hopelessness these people experience is a primary reason I am drawn to this social issue. Many individuals, regardless of their life experiences, reach a point where they feel they cannot contribute to the world, leading them to believe their lives will never improve. I want to eradicate this mindset by affirming that every person is fearfully and wonderfully made with a great purpose. No one is less valuable than anyone else; we are all equal. The foster care system and homelessness are intertwined in a complex web of social issues, including poverty, mental health, and lack of access to education. Foster children often age out of the system without a stable support network, making them vulnerable to homelessness. Homeless individuals, in turn, face numerous barriers to accessing basic necessities like shelter, food, and healthcare, which perpetuates a cycle of despair. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach that includes not only providing immediate assistance but also creating long-term solutions to break this cycle. I dream of addressing this issue through my career by becoming a software engineer and, more importantly, a developer of apps, applications, and web programs that build faith, family, and fitness. These values are crucial to me and are effective in combating hopelessness. For me, developing a relationship with Christ was the turning point that gave my life meaning and hope, showing me that I could positively impact the world. Through my career, I aim to create digital tools that demonstrate to people their inherent value and purpose. I want to help them understand that their talents can be used to improve the world through love and compassion. By leveraging technology, I hope to provide resources and platforms that foster a sense of community and support for those in need, ultimately helping to restore hope and dignity to foster children and homeless individuals. By creating platforms that connect foster children and homeless people with mentors, educational resources, and employment opportunities, I can help bridge the gap between their current circumstances and a brighter future. These platforms can also offer mental health support and community-building activities, which are essential for rebuilding self-esteem and fostering a sense of belonging. Additionally, by promoting fitness and healthy lifestyles, these programs can improve their overall well-being, empowering them to take control of their lives and aspire to greater things. Through these efforts, I hope to show that technology can be a powerful tool for social change, providing tangible solutions to complex problems and helping those who are most vulnerable find hope and purpose in their lives.

    If given the opportunity, my contribution to the community would involve creating a program aimed at reducing food waste in the Washington, DC area. This program would focus on collecting surplus food to feed the homeless, while also sharing the gospel of Christ with them. These initiatives are deeply important to me for two primary reasons: firstly, my faith in Christ is the most significant aspect of my life, and secondly, the prevalence of homelessness around my area, particularly near Howard University, is a pressing concern. To provide more context, at Howard University, the most common metro or train route we use runs along Georgia Avenue. This path requires a 15-minute walk to the train station, a route frequently taken by many students. Along this path, it is common to encounter numerous homeless individuals, many of whom are in dire need of food and assistance. As a college student, I often find myself unable to help them due to my limited resources, which deeply saddens me. For safety reasons, I have observed many students avoiding interaction with these homeless individuals, treating them as less than human by walking past them without acknowledgment. This lack of empathy is troubling, especially when considering the global issue of food waste. Many people, including students, waste food regularly, whether it's the extra food from the lunchroom or leftovers from restaurants. If we could redirect this excess food to the homeless, it would make a significant difference in their lives. Additionally, I believe it is crucial to share the gospel with them. When I first heard the gospel—that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again to offer us eternal life in heaven—it transformed my life completely. The love and sacrifice of Christ have empowered me to love others deeply and genuinely. Sharing this message of love and hope is essential. Even though these individuals might be facing extremely challenging circumstances, such as homelessness, the love and peace found in Christ can surpass all their difficulties and provide them with hope. This program would not only address the immediate need for food but also offer spiritual nourishment. By demonstrating Christ's love through our actions, we can show the homeless that they are valued and loved, and that there is hope beyond their current situation. In conclusion, this program would serve a dual purpose: reducing food waste and providing for the homeless, while also spreading the gospel. It is a holistic approach to addressing both physical and spiritual needs, driven by the love of Christ and a desire to see everyone treated with dignity and compassion. Through this initiative, I hope to make a meaningful impact on my community, particularly in the lives of those who are often overlooked and marginalized.

    @normandiealise #GenWealth Scholarship
    Generational wealth is a term that refers to the wealth and assets passed down from one generation to another. This wealth is not just limited to money but can also include property, education, and other assets that can improve the quality of life for future generations. In my opinion, generational wealth is making the lives of those after you significantly better than your own life. One of the main advantages of generational wealth is the financial security it provides for future generations. When families accumulate wealth over time, they can pass down assets and resources that can provide a safety net for future generations. This can include investments in stocks and real estate, as well as cash and other valuable assets. These resources can help to create opportunities for future generations to build their own wealth and achieve their goals. Generational wealth can also provide access to education and other opportunities that were not available to previous generations. For example, if a family has accumulated enough wealth, they can provide their children and grandchildren with access to quality education and training that can help them succeed in their careers. This can include private schools, higher education, and specialized training programs that can help future generations excel in their fields and achieve financial success. In addition to financial security and access to education, generational wealth can also lead to better health and well-being for future generations. Wealth can provide access to better healthcare, nutritious food, and other resources that can improve the overall quality of life for individuals and families. This can help to break the cycle of poverty and provide a better future for future generations. However, it is important to note that generational wealth is not always easy to achieve. It often requires hard work, smart investments, and a long-term perspective. Families must be diligent in their efforts to accumulate wealth and ensure that it is passed down responsibly to future generations. In addition, there are systemic barriers, such as institutional racism and economic inequality, that can make it difficult for some families to accumulate generational wealth. In conclusion, generational wealth is a concept that can significantly improve the lives of those after you. It can provide financial security, access to education and opportunities, and better health and well-being for future generations. While it is not always easy to achieve, families who are diligent in their efforts to accumulate wealth and pass it down responsibly can help to create a brighter future for their descendants.

    When I was in the 7th grade, I decided to start selling cake jars at school. I was passionate about baking and loved the idea of sharing my creations with others. However, selling goods at school was strictly against the rules. Despite this, I went ahead with my plan. At first, things were going great. I sold my cake jars to classmates during lunchtime and even managed to make some profit. I felt proud of myself for being entrepreneurial and making something that people wanted to buy. But eventually, my luck ran out. One day, a teacher caught me selling my cake jars and immediately reprimanded me. I was given a warning and told that if I continued to sell goods at school, I could face more severe consequences. At first, I felt disappointed and discouraged. I had worked hard to create my product and build up my business, and now it seemed like it was all for nothing. But as I reflected on the experience, I realized that there were still valuable lessons to be learned. First and foremost, I learned the importance of following rules and regulations. While it can be tempting to go against the rules when you feel like they're holding you back, there are often good reasons for them. In this case, selling goods at school could have created a distraction and disrupted the learning environment for other students. By breaking the rules, I put myself and others at risk. I also learned about the importance of ethics and integrity in business. While I was able to make some money from selling cake jars, it wasn't worth the risk of getting caught and facing punishment. It's important to build a business on a solid foundation of honesty and transparency, rather than trying to cut corners or break rules for short-term gains. Despite the setback of getting caught, I didn't give up on my entrepreneurial spirit. I realized that there were other ways to pursue my passion for baking and selling goods. I started looking for opportunities outside of school, such as local farmers markets and community events. This helped me to learn more about the wider business world and how to navigate it in a legal and ethical way. Finally, I learned the value of perseverance and resilience. Even though my first attempt at selling goods at school failed, I didn't let it stop me from pursuing my goals. Instead, I took it as a learning experience and used it to grow and improve as an entrepreneur. In the end, I'm grateful for the experience of selling cake jars in the 7th grade, even if it didn't go exactly as planned. It taught me so much about business principles, ethics, and resilience, and helped me develop a passion for entrepreneurship that I still carry with me today. While I wouldn't recommend breaking the rules to pursue a business idea, I do believe that there are always lessons to be learned from our mistakes and setbacks.

    When I was in third grade, my math teacher noticed that I was rushing through my multiplication tables and not fully understanding the concepts. What would happen was the teacher would pass out the quizzes to everyone and we would all start at the same time. My competitive nature took over at this point and if I did not turn in my quiz first I would think I lost not even worrying about my score. This tactic showed in my grades as they would always be lower than my other grades. My teacher seeing this instead of simply telling me to slow down implemented a new approach to help me grasp the material. She had me practice each table by writing out the problems by hand and saying the answers aloud, rather than just reciting them in my head. At first, I was frustrated with this new method. When I started going slow with my time tables I started getting better grades on all of my tests and quizzes, ironically after this, I continued with this speed and, wanted to move on to more advanced math, and felt like I was wasting my time. But as I continued to practice, I started to see the value in what my teacher was doing. By slowing down and truly understanding the basics, I was able to build a strong foundation for future math concepts. This experience also taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of taking my time in other areas of my life. I realized that rushing through things without fully understanding them can lead to mistakes and a lack of understanding. I started to apply this lesson to other subjects in school, as well as to my personal life. I found that taking my time and absorbing new information helped me do better in school. I was able to understand and retain information better, which led to better grades and a greater sense of accomplishment. I also found that taking my time in my personal life helped me appreciate the small moments and enjoy my experiences more fully. Overall, my third-grade math teacher's approach of making me slow down and truly understand the multiplication tables had a profound impact on my life. Not only did it improve my math skills, but it also taught me the value of taking my time and fully understanding the things around me. I am grateful for her guidance and the lessons she taught me, which continue to serve me well to this day.
