Through my professional experiences and educational training, I aspire to become a trusted professional in the public health sector, emphasizing mental health service and community engagement. In any space I go, I aim to leave a positive effect on the people I serve and on the team that makes this ship sail. My long-term goal is to aid in the enhancement of human well-being and, address the diverse needs of all people, and empower vulnerable & oppressed communities, especially young Black males. I want to equip individuals and communities with the tools and information to thrive in life instead of living to survive while integrating a theoretical counseling orientation. I want to utilize my communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills to provide healing in communities that need it now more than ever. Through a collaborative effort with those who align with my mission, we can make tremendous strides toward destigmatizing mental health challenges among those with low SES and advocating for research/interventions to reduce health disparities.

    Book Lovers Scholarship
If I could have everyone in the world read just one book, the choice would undoubtedly be George Orwell's "1984." This dystopian masterpiece has withstood the test of time, transcending its original context and becoming a timeless warning about the perils of unchecked power, surveillance, and the erosion of truth. "1984" is not merely a novel; it is a stark reflection of the fragility of freedom and the dangers of authoritarianism. Orwell's portrayal of a totalitarian regime, led by the omnipresent Big Brother, serves as a chilling reminder of how easily individual liberties can be suppressed in the name of security and control. The power of "1984" lies in its ability to resonate with readers across different eras and political landscapes. Orwell's depiction of a society where language is manipulated, history is rewritten, and dissent is brutally suppressed forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about the potential abuses of power. The novel compels us to question the nature of truth, reality, and the role of the state in shaping our perception of both. Moreover, "1984" serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of apathy and complacency. The protagonist, Winston Smith, grapples with the consequences of his indifference before ultimately awakening to the necessity of resistance. It is a stark reminder that the preservation of freedom requires vigilance and an unwavering commitment to truth. In a world where information is increasingly manipulated, and surveillance technologies are advancing at an unprecedented pace, the themes explored in "1984" have never been more relevant. The book challenges us to remain vigilant guardians of our liberties, to question authority, and to resist the allure of conformity. By advocating for the widespread reading of "1984," I hope to spark a global conversation about the importance of safeguarding individual freedoms, promoting critical thinking, and resisting the encroachments of authoritarianism. In an era where misinformation can spread like wildfire, Orwell's timeless work serves as a beacon, guiding us through the murky waters of political manipulation and urging us to defend the principles that underpin a free and just society. In conclusion, if there is one book that I believe everyone in the world should read, it is "1984." Its enduring relevance and profound insights make it a powerful instrument for fostering a collective awareness of the threats to freedom and the indispensable need for eternal vigilance in the face of tyranny.

Studying abroad in Ghana opened a gateway to profound personal growth and development, shaping my perspective on cultural identity, biases, and the importance of embracing diverse narratives. The days spent in Mpeasem Village were transformative, providing me with a firsthand experience of a culture rich in history and identity. Interacting with my host family and immersing myself in the children's classroom revealed the significance of cultural identity. While I had faced hardships in my life, the villagers possessed a sense of identity that resonated deeply with me. It became apparent that understanding one's roots and acknowledging one's name was a powerful affirmation of self. The naming ceremony in the village marked a pivotal moment where I embraced the name Na-Na Kofi Tewiah, a name bestowed upon me by my Ghanaian host mother and village chiefs. This newfound pride in my name became a tangible connection to my African lineage, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and valuing cultural identities. The experience in Ghana dismantled the preconceived notions I held about the continent, dispelling the single stories and stereotypes that often cloud our perceptions. The realization dawned on me that relying on a single point of view can lead to incomplete and inaccurate understandings of people, places, or circumstances. This insight fueled my commitment to actively seek diverse perspectives, recognizing the danger of perpetuating stereotypes born out of limited narratives. As I navigated the dynamic culture of Ghana, I became acutely aware of the mending that needed to occur in the bonds between the Diaspora and native Africans. The historical narratives, often distorted and fragmented, called for a holistic understanding that could only be achieved through direct experiences and personal connections. It became clear that my role as a student extended beyond academic pursuits; it encompassed sharing my story and creating spaces to hear the narratives of my peers. Through these exchanges, I aimed to contribute to a broader perspective that transcended single stories and fostered a more nuanced understanding of cultures. The experience in Ghana also deepened my awareness of biases and their roots in our socialization. The explicit support for pro-Black movements and the genuine belief in impartial treatment might coexist with implicit biases ingrained through societal conditioning. The realization that biases operate beyond conscious awareness underscored the importance of continuous self-reflection and active efforts to challenge and reshape ingrained perspectives. In essence, exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and environments has been the catalyst for my personal growth and development. It has instilled in me a commitment to embracing diverse narratives, dismantling stereotypes, and actively participating in the dialogue that bridges the gaps between cultures. Studying in Ghana became a transformative chapter in my journey, a chapter that illuminated the power of understanding, empathy, and the richness that comes from acknowledging and celebrating the multiplicity of human experiences.
    Mental Health Importance Scholarship
In the intricate tapestry of my life, I have come to understand that my mental health is not just a facet of well-being; it is the very essence that shapes the colors and patterns of my existence. Recognizing the profound impact it has on every aspect of my life, I believe that prioritizing my mental health is not merely a choice but a fundamental necessity for a fulfilling and balanced life. Amidst the myriad responsibilities and demands that life presents, the sanctuary of my mental wellness is a non-negotiable priority. My journey toward mental well-being involves a harmonious blend of practices that bring clarity, peace, and comfort to the intricate landscape of my mind. One cornerstone of my mental health routine is the act of cooking. Engaging in the alchemical process of transforming raw ingredients into nourishing meals is a therapeutic ritual. The sizzling sounds, the aromatic symphony, and the tactile engagement with the textures of food create a multisensory experience that anchors me to the present moment. It's a form of mindful meditation where the kitchen becomes my canvas, and each dish is a masterpiece of self-care. Reading my Bible is another vital element in my quest for mental wellness. The sacred verses, steeped in wisdom and timeless truths, serve as a compass guiding me through the complexities of life. In the quiet moments of reflection, I find clarity, solace, and an unwavering source of comfort. The sacred words provide a sanctuary where I can unravel the knots of my thoughts and align my spirit with a higher purpose. Gratitude walks have become a cherished practice in my routine. Venturing into the embrace of nature, I immerse myself in the sights, sounds, and sensations around me. With every step, I am present, mindful of the rustling leaves, the caress of the breeze, and the rhythmic cadence of my breath. As I walk, I consciously reflect on the multitude of blessings in my life, expressing gratitude for both the mundane and the extraordinary. This practice not only fosters a deep sense of appreciation but also serves as a conduit for prayers for others in need. The strokes of a paintbrush on canvas become a visual symphony of self-expression and emotional release. Painting is a cathartic journey where emotions find a voice, and the vibrant hues on the canvas mirror the kaleidoscope of feelings within. It's a form of therapy that transcends words, allowing my inner landscape to unfold in strokes and colors. Equally vital to my mental well-being are the silly adventures I embark on with my friends. Laughter, as they say, is the best medicine, and these adventures are a prescription for joy. Whether it's exploring quirky places, engaging in spontaneous escapades, or simply sharing laughter over a cup of coffee, these moments are the threads that weave a tapestry of camaraderie and shared joy. In the mosaic of my mental health journey, these practices are not just routines; they are rituals of self-love and self-discovery. They serve as anchors in the ebb and flow of life, grounding me in moments of chaos and lifting me in moments of joy. Prioritizing my mental health is not a luxury but a commitment to nurturing the very foundation from which the richness of life unfolds. It is an acknowledgment that, in the orchestra of existence, my mental well-being is the conductor that orchestrates a harmonious and fulfilling symphony.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
In the heart of inner-city Cleveland, where economic inequalities and the harsh echoes of gun violence scarred the very fabric of the streets, I navigated perilous grounds. Amidst this labyrinth of adversity, a crucible of challenges and resilience, my life's purpose crystallized. It emerged as a beacon of hope amidst the struggles faced by the youth caught in the crossfire of an unforgiving environment. The catalyst for my journey into the mental health field was a profound loss – that of my revered high school football teammate named Mike. His irrepressible spirit, silenced by a drive-by shooting, became a poignant reminder of the harsh realities faced by young Black males in my community. The aftermath of Mike's tragedy and the tumult within my own home exacted a toll on my mental well-being. I navigated this challenging terrain, waking up each day with a mix of anger and desolation. The camaraderie of my friends at school, though unknowing of the depths of my pain, provided a sanctuary in the storm. Yet, the pervasive feeling of being unheard and the need to project an impenetrable facade haunted me, echoing a sentiment shared by many Black males like myself. Motivated by an innate desire to grow beyond the confines of Cleveland and explore life outside the world I once knew, I embarked on a journey that held the promise of new horizons-- that journey being to college. However, the traumas ingrained in the streets of my hometown lingered, casting shadows on every facet of my life. Joel provided a safe space where I was permitted to feel, an opportunity to unravel the intricacies of my emotions, and the guidance needed to make sense of the complexities that had long plagued my well-being. Becoming a first-generation college student and entering rooms most from my background could not, I carried remnants of my tumultuous past. However, therapy ignited a passion within me, a burning desire to bridge the gap between communities of color and mental healthcare. I embarked on the path of becoming a Counselor-in-training, driven by the conviction that everyone, especially young Black males, deserves equal access to quality mental health care. My goal is to provide counseling services to young Black males, drawing from my own experiences to create a safe space where they can be heard and understood. The stigma surrounding mental health within communities of color must be dismantled, and equitable care should be made accessible to all. I aim to leverage my unique journey and cultural sensitivity to foster connections, instill hope, and contribute to the collective healing of individuals who, like me, have faced the challenges of navigating mental health amid adversity. Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
In the crisp embrace of autumn, there exists a particular elixir at Starbucks that transcends the realm of mere beverages. The Pumpkin Spice Latte, a seasonal marvel, has seamlessly woven itself into the fabric of my fall narrative, becoming a cherished character in the chapters of cozy sweaters, rustling leaves, and the intoxicating aroma of spices. As the leaves undergo their breathtaking metamorphosis, so does my anticipation for the return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte. The very mention of its name conjures images of amber-hued landscapes and the warmth of a crackling fireplace. Each year, its arrival marks the commencement of my personal autumnal saga. The first sip is a journey through a sensory wonderland. The velvety blend of espresso, steamed milk, and the eponymous pumpkin spice syrup dances on my palate, a harmonious symphony of flavors that heralds the arrival of fall. The notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove intermingle, creating a tapestry of autumnal richness that lingers on my taste buds like the gentle rustle of fallen leaves underfoot. This humble beverage becomes a character with a personality of its own. It is the storyteller, narrating tales of harvest moons and pumpkin patches. It is the companion, providing solace during chilly evenings and inspiring introspective moments. The Pumpkin Spice Latte is not merely a drink; it is the embodiment of fall's essence, a seasonal spirit that transforms mundane moments into extraordinary memories. As I cradle the iconic Starbucks cup, adorned with its distinctive orange hue and the promise of autumnal bliss, I am transported to a world where time slows down, and the air carries a hint of nostalgia. The Pumpkin Spice Latte becomes the protagonist of my fall adventures, a steadfast companion through hayrides, apple-picking escapades, and contemplative walks beneath canopies of golden foliage. Its role extends beyond the sensory realm; it is a catalyst for connections. My friends and I gather over Pumpkin Spice Lattes, engaging in conversations that meander like the tendrils of steam rising from the cups. For me, it fosters a sense of community, creating shared experiences and forging bonds that, like the seasonal drink itself, are infused with warmth and comfort. The Pumpkin Spice Latte, with its ephemeral presence, embodies the transience of fall. It is a reminder to savor the fleeting beauty of the season, to relish in the simple pleasures, and to find joy in the changing hues of both leaves and lattes. In the tapestry of my fall narrative, the Pumpkin Spice Latte is the golden thread, weaving its magic into the fabric of my memories and inviting me to embrace the beauty of autumn with every aromatic sip.

In the tapestry of my life, woven through challenges and triumphs, my journey has been shaped by a profound exploration of mental health. Born into a family marked by the struggles of my parents' mental health conditions, my formative years were defined by a relentless quest for understanding, compassion, and a determination to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Navigating the complexities of my parents' psychological distress taught me invaluable lessons in patience and empathy. It became the crucible where my beliefs about mental health began to take shape. Witnessing their challenges, I realized the transformative power of breaking the silence surrounding mental health and fostering an environment of understanding and support. As I delved into my senior year of high school, a spark ignited within me through a program that allowed me to take college courses concurrently. It was here that I discovered my passion for psychology, inspired by my father's fascination with the work of Sigmund Freud. This newfound interest became a calling, propelling me towards a degree in psychology with a resolute purpose – to comprehend mental health conditions and address the social justice issues affecting my community. Leaving the familiarity of my hometown for my undergraduate degree was not just a geographical shift but a journey towards self-discovery and growth. Engaging in programs like Entrepreneurship for the Public Good and completing a Psychology Capstone project broadened my horizons, providing practical experiences that fortified my commitment to the mental health field. The challenges I faced and overcame during this period became stepping stones toward my ultimate goal – a career in mental health counseling. Believing fervently in the transformative potential of psychology for social justice, I actively sought opportunities to serve my community. Programs like Entrepreneurship for the Public Good and involvement with the Kentucky Refugee Ministry allowed me to work on initiatives addressing economic growth and understanding the cultural influences on mental health. These experiences deepened my commitment to utilizing my skills for positive change and reducing disparities in mental health access. Motivated by a desire to advocate for mental wellness and effect tangible change, my gaze is set on the mental health counseling program at Johns Hopkins University. The program's comprehensive curriculum aligns seamlessly with my aspirations, offering the necessary foundation to address diverse needs and contribute to breaking down the barriers that impede mental health care. I aspire to contribute to destigmatizing mental health challenges, advocating for social change, particularly among those with low socioeconomic status. My journey reflects not only personal growth but a commitment to making a positive impact on communities through mental health advocacy. My experiences and the lessons learned along the way have shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Continuing my education is not merely a pursuit of knowledge; it is a deliberate choice to acquire the skills needed to be an advocate for mental health and well-being. As I step into the next chapter at Johns Hopkins University, I carry with me the resilience forged in the crucible of adversity, ready to contribute to transformative work and champion the cause of mental health, creating a healthier and more compassionate world.
    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
As I reflect on the tumultuous tapestry of my teenage years, the haunting lyrics of Olivia Rodrigo's 'GUTS' echo in the corridors of my memories. One particular line encapsulates the essence of my adolescent experience with uncanny precision: "I let you take up all my time, while I'm just tryna make you mine." These words are not merely lyrics; they are a haunting reflection of the challenges and complexities that defined my journey through adolescence. The line's resonance lies in its raw depiction of the time-consuming nature of teenage relationships. In those formative years, I found myself navigating the labyrinth of emotions, juggling school, friendships, and the intoxicating allure of first loves. The sentiment of letting someone take up all my time rings true to the days when the mere thought of a crush occupied the forefront of my mind, leaving me ensnared in a whirlwind of emotions. The pursuit of love, or at least the young minded interpretation of it, was a consuming endeavor. I allowed myself to be immersed in the thrill of crushes and romantic daydreams, often sacrificing precious time that could have been dedicated to personal growth and self-discovery. In the pursuit of making someone mine, I inadvertently surrendered moments that could have been invested in exploring my own passions, fostering friendships, and understanding the complexities of my identity. Adolescence is a time of vulnerability and self-discovery, a period when the desire for connection often overshadows the importance of cultivating an individual sense of self. Rodrigo's lyric captures the inherent tension between the yearning for love and the imperative need to establish a foundation of selfhood. “The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
"The Office," a comedic masterpiece that has left an indelible mark on popular culture, not only brings humor to the mundane but also serves as a mirror reflecting the intricacies of workplace dynamics. Among the diverse cast of characters, one individual stands out as the embodiment of relatable awkwardness and genuine charm – Jim Halpert. Jim's character resonates with me on a profound level, as his wit, dry humor, and ability to navigate the absurdity of office life align with my own experiences. From his subtle pranks on Dwight to his unspoken camaraderie with Pam, Jim embodies a sense of authenticity in a world often dominated by corporate formalities. His genuine reactions to the eccentricities of Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch make him a relatable figure for anyone who has found themselves navigating the quirky landscapes of their own workplace. One of the aspects of Jim's character that I resonate with most is his role as the office prankster. Jim's pranks, ranging from the classic stapler encased in Jell-O to the intricate "Assistant to the Regional Manager" pranks on Dwight, inject a much-needed dose of humor into the often monotonous and mundane office setting. These pranks, while playful and harmless, serve as a release valve for the tension and boredom that can pervade a workplace. Jim's ability to find amusement in the everyday and his willingness to inject levity into the office atmosphere reflect my own inclination to seek humor as a coping mechanism in the face of corporate routine. Moreover, Jim's relationship with Pam is a heartwarming exploration of genuine connection amid the chaos of office life. The slow-burning romance and eventual marriage of Jim and Pam provide a hopeful and relatable narrative that transcends the confines of the workplace. Jim's unwavering support for Pam and his persistence in pursuing a meaningful relationship underscore the importance of authentic connections in the often impersonal realm of corporate existence. "The Office" has significantly shaped my sense of humor and perspective on workplace dynamics. The mockumentary format, breaking the fourth wall and allowing characters to directly address the camera, provides a unique lens through which the absurdities of office life are magnified. The show's humor often lies in its ability to find the comical in the ordinary, turning mundane tasks and workplace interactions into comedic gold. The juxtaposition of the characters' professional lives with their personal quirks highlights the universal truth that workplaces are populated by individuals with distinct personalities and idiosyncrasies. The show has taught me to appreciate the diversity of personalities in any workplace, finding humor in the unique traits that each person brings to the table. Additionally, "The Office" serves as a cautionary tale about the potential pitfalls of corporate culture. From the bumbling leadership of Michael Scott to the absurdity of office politics, the show satirizes the flaws inherent in hierarchical structures. It prompts viewers to reflect on the impact of ineffective management, unproductive meetings, and the often irrational decision-making processes that can plague organizations. In conclusion, Jim Halpert's character in "The Office" resonates with me as a symbol of relatable humor, authenticity, and the quest for genuine connections in the workplace. The show, with its mockumentary style and quirky characters, has shaped my sense of humor by finding amusement in the ordinary and has provided valuable insights into the complexities of workplace dynamics. Through its comedic lens, "The Office" has become a touchstone for understanding the intricacies of corporate life, offering both laughter and reflection on the shared experiences that unite us in the realm of work.

Charles Cheesman's Student Debt Reduction Scholarship
In pursuing my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I am driven by a deep commitment to addressing the needs of underserved communities and vulnerable populations within the counseling profession. As a first-generation student at Berea College, I navigated the challenges of poverty with the support of the Pell Grant, enabling me to reach academic heights. Now, transitioning into graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, I face a significant financial burden that the Charles Cheeseman scholarship can help alleviate. The generous scholarship money of Charles Chessman of $10,000 would enable me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies, clinical training, and professional development. The financial support is crucial as I pursue a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Johns Hopkins, aiming to become a proficient mental health counselor capable of making a positive impact on diverse communities. This institution aligns perfectly with my personal and professional goals, emphasizing the reduction of health disparities and the improvement of community well-being. It addresses the historical shortcomings in therapy, particularly for individuals who are black, brown, differently-abled, or identify outside heteronormative standards. My passion lies in ensuring equal access to quality mental health care for everyone, and the institution's strategic promotion of diversity in counseling students resonates with this commitment. Johns Hopkins University provides an exceptional counseling program that will equip me with the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience needed to serve diverse populations effectively. However, the financial resources required for this education pose a challenge that the Charles Chessman scholarship can help me overcome. With the scholarship support, I can fully dedicate myself to my studies and training, becoming a compassionate and effective mental health counselor capable of addressing the unique needs of underserved and vulnerable communities. My professional identity reflects dedication to mental health counseling and education. Currently pursuing a Master's degree while serving as an Americorps Member, I develop and implement educational programs for literacy, ESL education, GRE training, and job readiness. Through Americorps, I've engaged with diverse communities, witnessing their resilience and potential for growth. My roles as a Camp Counselor, Student Manager, Admissions Ambassador, and Orientation Leader showcase my leadership and facilitation skills in various settings. In terms of community involvement, my passion lies in serving underrepresented populations, particularly young Black males. Representation in the counseling field is crucial to bridging the gap in healthcare disparities. My involvement in leadership development programs during my undergraduate years motivated me to empower men of color in educational spaces, addressing issues like toxic masculinity, emotional development, intimate partner violence, and transgenerational trauma. Additionally, my experience working with adolescents and young adults at a Massachusetts summer camp highlighted the transformative power of arts and music education in a therapeutic context. As I contemplate potential places for internships and practicums, I envision community-based mental healthcare settings, educational spaces, or outpatient care centers targeting young adults and adolescents of color facing mental health challenges. My dedication to community outreach, currently manifested through AmeriCorp volunteer work in Baltimore, serves as preparation for future fieldwork. I am building connections, listening empathically to community stories, and understanding the post-pandemic challenges affecting the emotional, mental, and physical health of individuals in Baltimore. In conclusion, this scholarship is not just a financial support opportunity but it is a catalyst for my educational and professional journey. My passion remains in alignment with addressing mental health disparities. Thus, having the opportunity to go through educational training is an essential step in my journey to become a culturally competent and compassionate mental health counselor, making a positive impact on underserved and vulnerable communities.

In the labyrinth of inner-city Cleveland, where gun violence marred the streets and economic disparities forged a stark divide, finding my purpose was akin to navigating a treacherous terrain. The youth, caught in the crossfire, bore the scars of this unforgiving environment. The struggle for survival became a grim reality, as families grappled with limited opportunities and resources. Some, driven by a desperate determination to provide, ventured into risky territories, despite the potential repercussions. Amidst this turmoil, the loss of my dear friend, Mike, reverberated like a thunderclap. His infectious energy and irrepressible spirit had been a beacon of light, even in the most grueling football practices. It was a cruel twist of fate that a routine trip to the store culminated in a drive-by shooting, leaving Mike paralyzed and fighting for his life. We clung to hope, fervently praying for his recovery, only to be shattered when he succumbed to his injuries. The refrain of "the good die young" echoed through our grief-stricken hearts. Navigating this harsh reality, compounded by the tumult within my own home, exacted a toll on my mental well-being. Each day seemed like an interminable nightmare, leaving me waking up with a mix of anger and desolation. The solace I sought from my parents was eclipsed by their battles against the relentless pressures of life. Yet, it was the camaraderie and unwavering support of my friends at school that breathed life back into my spirit. Their unknowing, yet steadfast presence provided a sanctuary in the storm. As a private individual, I struggled to articulate my pain, finding refuge instead in the arena of sports. Yet, as I matured, I recognized a shared sentiment among Black males like myself—the feeling of being unheard, of needing to project an impenetrable facade. It was faith that sustained me, an unyielding belief that God would carve a path through the fire. This faith propelled me into the realm of higher education, breaking ground as a first-generation college student. Still, remnants of my tumultuous past clung to me, casting shadows on my relationships and self-perception. A persistent inner voice beckoned me towards therapy, urging me to confront the scars of my past. It was Joēl, a trusted friend and counselor, who provided the safe space and guidance for this transformative journey. Together, we excavated profound truths, reshaping my perspective on past struggles. Joēl's spiritual approach illuminated the distinction between hope and faith, underscoring that faith demands not only belief but action, an unwavering commitment to weathering life's storms. As I delved deeper into this process, the wisdom of Proverbs 13:12 took root within me: "Hope deferred makes the heart sick." I realized that suppressing my emotions only fueled the internal turmoil. Therapy became a crucible for learning how to navigate life's challenges with grace and resilience, viewing each trial as an opportunity for growth. Joēl's guidance not only facilitated my healing but set me on a trajectory to pay this transformative experience forward, embarking on the path of becoming a Counselor-in-training. This odyssey, from the depths of desolation to the pinnacle of self-discovery, illustrates the profound impact of uncovering one's "Why." Born from the crucible of inner-city strife, I emerged with a resolute sense of purpose, committed to supporting others on their journeys toward healing and self-realization.
