As I approach the final year of my undergraduate studies and prepare to apply to veterinary school, I am often asked about my plans and aspirations. My response is always met with a mixture of surprise and admiration as I confidently declare my intention to study Animal Science with a concentration in Companion Animals. I am determined to use my education and skills to benefit my community at large, both locally and globally. My passion for animals began at a young age, and as I grew older, it only intensified. I have always been fascinated by the unique bond between humans and animals, particularly companion animals. As I delved deeper into my studies in Animal Science, I realized that there was so much more to learn about these creatures that bring so much joy and love into our lives. By concentrating on companion animals, I will have the opportunity to not only deepen my understanding of their physiological and behavioral aspects but also develop practical skills in surgical techniques and medication management. I believe that this knowledge will allow me to provide the best possible care for our furry friends, ensuring their health and well-being. At Texas Tech University's renowned veterinary school, I will be equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to make a positive impact on the lives of animals. However, my aspirations do not end there. I have always felt a deep sense of duty towards my community and my country. This is why I have decided to join the army while studying at veterinary school. My decision to join the army is driven by my desire to serve and protect not only the animals we love but also the people, our nation, and other countries. I see my higher calling as a veterinarian to extend beyond the borders of my community and country and make a difference in the world. With my education in Animal Science, I will have a unique perspective and set of skills that will be invaluable in the fight against foreign diseases. I envision myself working alongside the army's veterinary corps, using my expertise to diagnose and treat animals in developing countries. I am committed to using my education to improve the lives of not just domestic animals, but also those in underprivileged communities around the world. By working with the army, I will have the opportunity to travel to different parts of the world and witness first-hand the impact of my work. In addition to my work with animals, I also hope to use my education to benefit my community by participating in outreach programs. I believe that educating the public about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership (spay and neutering) is crucial in creating a better and more compassionate society. Through my involvement in these programs, I hope to inspire others to become advocates for animals and make a positive impact in their communities. In conclusion, my decision to study Animal Science with a concentration in Companion Animals and join the army is driven by my passion for animals and my desire to make a difference in the world. I am confident that my education and skills will allow me to serve my community in various ways, from providing medical care to animals in need to educating the public. I am determined to use my education to benefit not just the animals, but also the people and the world at large.

As I sit down to write this essay, I am filled with a sense of excitement and purpose. My name is Joseph Robeson and I am a senior at Texas Tech University. I am currently studying Animal Science with a concentration in Companion Animal (intermixed practice) in pursuit of someday becoming a Veterinarian. My journey toward this career path has been shaped by various life experiences that have ignited my passion for the care and well-being of animals. Since a young age, I have always had a deep love and connection with animals. Growing up, I had a loyal companion in my childhood pet, Sage. She was not just a pet to me, but a friend, a confidant, and a source of unconditional love. However, when Sage passed away, I was devastated. It was then that I realized the impact that animals have on our lives and how crucial their well-being is. This experience sparked a fire within me to work towards making a positive difference in the lives of animals. In pursuit of this goal, I have taken up various opportunities to gain hands-on experience in the field of Animal Science. I am currently working for two clinics, County Line Animal Hospital and Sayers Animal Hospital. At County Line Animal Hospital, I am gaining essential rural experience in farm calls. This has exposed me to the intricacies of caring for both large and small animals. On the other hand, at Sayers Animal Hospital, I am able to witness the primary experience of the veterinarian world, with a focus on small domesticated pets. These two clinics have been instrumental in providing me with a well-rounded understanding of the field and have further fueled my passion for animal care. What fascinates me the most about the field of veterinary medicine is the unique bond that exists between animals and humans. As a veterinarian, I will not only be treating animals, but I will also be making a positive impact on the lives of their owners. I believe that animals play a crucial role in our lives, and by taking care of them, we are also taking care of our society as a whole. I see myself as a servant of the community, using my intellect and mindset to better the world, one loving animal at a time. Moreover, I am drawn to the challenges and complexities that come with being a veterinarian. Each day brings new cases and different animals, each with their own set of needs and requirements. I am excited about the prospect of constantly learning and evolving in this field, and using my skills and knowledge to provide the best care for my patients. In conclusion, my experiences and passion have led me to choose a career in the healthcare/medicine field, specifically in veterinary medicine. My work at two different clinics has given me a diverse perspective on animal care and has only solidified my desire to serve and improve the lives of animals. I am determined to use my skills, knowledge, and love for animals to make a positive impact in the world, and I am confident that my journey toward becoming a veterinarian will help me achieve this goal.

The crackle of a campfire, the glint of sunlight off a fishing hook, the rustle of a book page turning – these are the echoes of my grandfather's lessons, forever woven into the fabric of who I am. He wasn't a man of many words, but his presence commanded a room, his eyes reading emotions like a weatherman in the skies. Raised in hardship, he carved his path, escaping poverty through military service and the crucible of Vietnam. He built a family, a fortress of love and support, and when I arrived, he took me under his wing, becoming the best grandpa a kid could ask for. He was my first fishing buddy, my patient shooting instructor, and most importantly, the torchbearer of education. "Knowledge is power," he'd say, his voice rumbling like distant thunder. Visits were instilled with reading sessions, and he patiently guided me through stories both epic and every day. He instilled in me a hunger for learning, a belief that knowledge could rewrite any script, and break any cycle. His lessons echo even now, halfway across the Lone Star State, as I navigate the halls of Texas Tech, animal science my compass, veterinary medicine my North Star. His spirit courses through my veins, urging me towards my goals, reminding me that the path won't be easy, but the destination is worth every step. But this journey isn't a solo trek. He taught me the value of community, of surrounding myself with people who, like him, refuse to settle for a stagnant life. In fellow students, I've found kindred spirits, eyes ablaze with shared dreams and the grit to chase them. We push each other, challenge each other, celebrate each other's victories, and pick each other up when doubts arise. We are a pack, fueled by ambition and the unspoken promise to leave our mark on the world. Looking back, I see the threads of my life weaving together – the campfire stories, the early mornings spent casting lines, the quiet nights lost in pages, the unwavering belief in knowledge and dreams. These are the gifts my grandfather bestowed, the tools he honed within me. Now, it's my turn to use them, to pay his lessons forward. My dream isn't just to become a veterinarian, to mend broken wings and cure ailing bodies. It's to be wise in my years, to guide others as my grandfather guided me, to show them that the future is full of thrilling possibilities, that knowledge is a story to success, and that passion is the driving force. I want to build a legacy, not of brick and mortar, but of lives empowered, dreams realized, and spirits soaring. This is my purpose, my tribute to the man who read the temperature of the room and saw a fire within me. I carry his lessons like embers in my heart, fanning them into flames that will illuminate the path not just for me, but for those who walk beside me. For in helping others reach their potential, I honor his memory and keep his legacy alive.

The recalling memory that started my passion for veterinary medicine wasn't just any spark, it was the warm presence of my childhood companion Sage, her constant loyalty and supporting companionship created an everlasting bond, promising to protect all creatures large and small for the general welfare of biological life. The world itself has wounds that need nurturing hands to heal those wounds. My volunteer days at the local pound in Oregon became a major drive to Sage's joyful existence. Each cage overflowed with stories displayed in sad eyes and drooping ears – tales of abandonment, loss, and fear. Every worrying wag of a tail, every fearful lick on my hand, tugged at my heartstrings, whispering of a future where I could be more than just a volunteer; a healer, a protector, a voice for those who couldn't speak for themselves. Veterinary medicine seemingly chose my path without my knowledge. It was a promise whispered in the peaceful silence of the pound, a promise to relieve pain, repair broken spirits, and restore everlasting happiness in whimpers and purrs. I dream of being the shining light of hope in those dimly lit cages, the hand that would gently wipe away fear and hope for a brighter tomorrow. But my ambition wasn't restrictive to individual animals; it craved a larger aspiration. I envisioned myself at the forefront of research, a soldier battling against the invisible enemies that plagued our beautiful world. My interest in joining the Army Veterinary Corps is a fever dream soon to come true. It meant committing to the mysteries of foreign diseases, developing vaccines and treatments against unknown threats, and safeguarding the health of not just furry companions, but entire ecosystems. I see myself soon alongside soldiers of different ranks, united in a common cause – protecting the animals that enriched our lives and the delicate balance of the environment. But my fight would not only include being in the general labs and facilities. I aimed to be a bridge between communities, building trust and understanding. Imagine: educating soldiers on responsible animal care, collaborating with local communities to combat zoonotic diseases, and ensuring that every creature, from the majestic tigers guarding ancient temples to the tiny lizards scuttling across forgotten battlefields, received the care and respect they deserved. My dream, then, wasn't merely to diagnose and treat; it was to heal on a grander scale. It was to weave a tapestry of scientific prowess, cultural understanding, and unwavering compassion, creating a world where humans and animals fought side-by-side, not against each other, against the common enemy of disease and suffering. So, I continue on this path with Sage's spirit in my heart, the lessons of the pound are a recurring lesson in my memory, and the vision of a healthier world guides my steps. I don't simply plan to be a veterinarian; I plan to be a warrior, a diplomat, a healer, and a bridge builder. One wagging tail, one grateful purr, one ecosystem restored – I will fight for them all, for in their well-being lies the health of our planet, the strength of our communities, and the very essence of what it means to be human: compassion, responsibility, and a shared journey with the beautiful creatures who share our world.

Unlike most kids who gushed over fluffy puppies or majestic lions, my fascination fell upon a creature shrouded in mystery: the saola. This rare, antelope-like bovid of Vietnam, sporting elegant, 20-inch horns, resonated with me in a way I couldn't explain. Perhaps it was their elusiveness, their vulnerability in a world that seemed to overlook them, that mirrored my own introspective nature. Or maybe it was the spark of wonder they ignited, reminding me of the magic animals hold, even the ones we barely know. This fascination with the unseen extended to all creatures great and small. My childhood revolved around my beloved Labrador, Sage. Her unconditional love and unwavering loyalty etched themselves onto my very soul. When she crossed the rainbow bridge, the loss left a gaping hole in my heart. Yet, from the ashes of grief blossomed a hidden purpose: to ensure no other animal felt the sting of neglect or pain. This ambition took root not only in my home but also at the local Therapeutic Horse Therapy Center. Here, I witnessed firsthand the profound bond between humans and animals. Horses, once ridden through fields, became instruments of healing, carrying children with disabilities on journeys of physical and emotional recovery. The gratitude in their eyes, the confidence blooming in their strides – it was a symphony of hope, orchestrated by the silent rhythm of hooves on gravel. These experiences shaped my path like a sculptor's chisel, carving my future with unwavering precision. Now, at Texas Tech, I delve into the intricate world of Companion Animal Science. Each textbook page unveils the secrets of animal anatomy, each lecture a step closer to understanding their minds and bodies. Veterinary Medicine beckons, promising a canvas where I can weave science with compassion, knowledge with empathy. My journey, like the saola’s, may seem unconventional, but it is driven by a passion as old as time – the bond between humans and animals. I dream of a future where every creature, from the majestic saola to the neighborhood tabby, receives the care and understanding they deserve. And every step I take, every book I devour, brings me closer to that dream, closer to becoming the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. So, when I tell you my favorite animal is the saola, it's not just about a curious creature in a faraway land. It's about the spark of possibility in every living being, the shared breath that connects us all. And it's about the unwavering commitment I carry, fueled by the memory of a loyal dog, the grace of a therapeutic horse, and the whisper of a rare antelope in the Vietnamese mountains. It's the commitment to become a veterinarian, an advocate, a healer, and to ensure that every creature, seen or unseen, receives the love and care they deserve.

Animal Care is in the hearts of many, as much of the world show love and respect to their furry friends. The specialized career path that I have chosen for my future is Veterinarian Medicine. Similar to a human doctor, the mission of a veterinarian is to provide and serve the public in hopes of helping continue many prosperous and healthy lives for many pets. As I have volunteered at two veterinarian clinics with a total of around 200 hours. Using and attaining valuable skills in effective communication, time management, and a good demeanor. As I have learned the skills of how to properly prepare equipment for surgery, restrain animals in different positions, and take blood. Continuing through my college, I will potentially obtain a Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine in which I will be able to help not only my community but as well as the world itself. My intentions after college are to join the Army and use my degree in research and development. Working in the laboratory will exponentially improve the livelihoods of third-world countries stricken with poor health conditions. A poor health environment leads to diseases which is why the importance of my medical profession in the research of given pathogenic diseases can lead to many cures and improvements in countless lives. I will be able to provide our soldiers overseas with safe food and drinking water. Testing various foods with examinations under a microscope is one of the jobs needed in the military as bacteria can cause many key problems in numerous lifestyles. Which can cause a reduction of productivity for those who suffer mild and severe symptoms. Or I could simply help check various animals on the military base and for the public in that country. As generally, the military not only supplies medical supplies to people but as well as animals. Animal care can be a factor to help educate countries about proper care generating fewer dissertations of animals and more animals in happy, loving homes. Overall, my degree is being pointed away from a traditional (normal) job and looking toward getting out of the country to serve those in need of resolve. My ongoing school years will cause me to focus on accumulating enough hours to reach my listed career goals. With enough hard work and perception, I will be able to foreshadow a promising future of serving my country and the beautiful world we call Earth.

Providing for the community is a blessing, as many believe that their community is the only one benefitting, in my opinion, the one who is serving gets the greatest treasure of all the experience! I have done many things for the community, some being a small-scale of picking up trash on the side of the road to something grand working at the San Antonio Food Bank. But the majority of my volunteering opportunities in my thoughts are impactful in a practical meaningful way. My days helping the neighborhood I previously lived in while living in San Antonio were very spiritually rewarding. I would give my hourly services to many of the elderly population, these services include lawn mowing, hedge trimming, clearing brush, and raking leaves. The purpose of giving my time was to help the older generations who are in a position of poor economic income to relieve stress on their well-being. I build friendships with people who might seem to have no family, as I give them my ear to listen to their stories and lessons of what they have learned in life. The next place I worked at which was previously mentioned was the San Antonio Food Bank in which my role in the organization was to divide and eliminate any close to expired/ expired canned foods. I also had to separate the products listed in the cans by brand and quantity per serving. I also volunteered at Upward Therapeutic Horse Therapy Center as the purpose of the organization is to help a focused group who lacks social mobility and are facing problems of autism, down syndrome to war veterans facing a disability or PTSD. I had the fortunate opportunity in helping those of an age range of 2-50 years old. I finally was allowed to volunteer at Animal Crossing Veterinarian Hospital where I totaled over 200 hours of service. Those services include nail trims, cleaning kennels, surgery preparation, vaccines, and blood tests. This is my main focus while furthering my education as I want to become a veterinarian. With this in mind, I would love to shadow a new veterinarian this summer to demonstrate my dedication to a cause that is bigger than myself. As I see this scenario as a win-win situation as not only am I gaining crucial knowledge and experience, but I am also providing help to many owners who are concerned with their furry friends.

It is human nature that one needs to improve oneself or the environment one life is in. No one wants to see others in economic hardships, emotionally distressed, and feeling alone. As I live in a small tight-knit community with a downtown dependent on its customers to support their small businesses. As I want people in my community to go to these such places as the farmers' market to help fund and progress these small-scale as helping improve our area can lead to an increase of opportunities for jobs, and bring more business to erupt, like the domino effect. As I have served my community countless times, a few prime examples are working for a Therapeutic Horse Therapy Center the purpose is to improve and develop the skills of autistic and mentally ill children and adults; I also had the opportunity to help a soldier who developed PTSD and lost some of his limbs. Another example is working at Animal Crossing Veterinarian Hospital where I developed skills for my potential job future as a veterinarian. I would help primarily with dogs and cats by preparing many of them for surgeries, x-rays, vaccinations or simple nail trims. Volunteering/ shadowing a total of more than 200 hours. My last example is helping at the San Antonio Food Bank for 3 months and helping thousands of people who were on the streets and never had a full belly on countless nights. As I was tasked with organizing all of the canned foods based on brands and quantity per serving. I also would throw away any products that were expired and near the expiration date. As these experiences will transition to the near future as I want to join the army and help work and develop antibiotics and vaccines to help third-world countries. My current goal is to finish my last year of schooling to obtain my bachelor's degree and apply for Veterinarian school.
    Financial Literacy Importance Scholarship
Being financially independent and stable is the dream for many people, but for many is a challenge as the American dream causes the masses to buy on impulse resulting in a collection of debt. Being able to manage your finances is a key concept in effectively living a worry-free life without debt. As debt-free individuals have bragging rights when brought up in a conversation, plus who doesn't enjoy the increase in growth in your money? As a student, it is very important to manage my finances while attending college, to reduce the number of loans needed to pay off college. The way I manage my money is by making a table for the week to know my set limit of spending to gain knowledge of my savings for the week. My weekly plan when it comes to grocery shopping is to buy items that have a long shelf life, are in large quantities and are in a good price range. For the topic of meals, I make my meals at home by making a large batch of food, which I usually put in Tupperware containers which usually last me for two meals. These cheap meals, usually consist of a carbohydrate of pasta/ rice, a protein of beef/ chicken, a veggie of spinach/ lettuce and cherry tomatoes. I usually keep this consistent by cooking during the weekday at my apartment, but when it comes to the weekend I try to reward myself by going out to eat as a continuous pattern of going out to eat stacks up in prices. Transitioning to my apartment's monthly bill as the utility prices add up not including apartment rent. When it comes to electricity, whenever I am done with whatever I am doing such as using the stove or a light fixture I immediately turn it off if I am not present in the room. Using the water I try to use cold water, as hot water is more expensive as it uses electricity and wastes more water to warm up. Using the washer and dryer, I try to use the lowest number of rinses also with cold water, and with the dryer, I generally use the low heat setting and set the timer to 60 minutes. With my end-of-the-month calculations, I can save about 22% on food, 15% on electricity and 19% on water, combining to make an estimated total savings of $150-$170.

Webster's definition of perseverance is the continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. This may be true as the modern definition, but for me, the definition is to defy all odds in hopes of a brighter future. An example of this situation that I have endured is the beginning of college. As my dream occupation is to become a veterinarian, meaning taking tedious classes such as chemistry and math. Of these courses, I had trouble adapting to college which meant a decline in production. During my first year as a college student, I failed both my chemistry level two course and stats class. Which dropped my GPA to 2.2. I felt so devastated by this troubling news as my dream of becoming a veterinarian seemed to be slowly narrowing to an unachievable goal. As to make matters worse, my confidence was dwindling to a point of giving up. The result of such a low GPA led to having been placed in an academic probation class, which in all my school years I never had to take. My first impression of the class was a meaningless course, which would give me simplistic advice including, "don't give up" or "try better". But throughout the weekly sessions, I attended, I learned key concepts of taking away any distractions that would possibly interfere with my success these included: television and social media. Coming out of this course I felt as if I was reborn, as a new me was ready for what lay ahead. In retrospect, the resolution of my two failed courses needed to be completed in a manner of confidence and improved effort. To have a clean new start in college, I had to retake these two classes over the summer. I put forward the additional effort of making index cards, online tutoring sessions, and a planner for tests/ quizzes and homework assignments. In addition, I referred to the current notes I took from my previous semesters of classes. At the end of the summer, I passed both classes with B+s. As now I use these efforts in my current student life as am I present in the last year of my undergraduate with a now 3.1 GPA and am nearly close to acquiring my Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science. My newly acquired knowledge and skills will help in my future development in obtaining a title and degree of Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine.

What inspires me into participating in helping my community is my family and future profession. As my family has always taught me from the earliest age, helping those in need can help me grasp life with greater meaning and respect. As I have given my time to various organizations. The first is Upward Transitions Therapeutic Horse Center, as this organization used Equestrian Therapy for many patients/ riders who have a disability. As the general percentage of riders were children with autism or down syndrome. But some of those people who came to this organization were First Responders/ Soldiers. As I can recall a certain individual who made an everlasting impact in my life. The day I met Sean, was the most enriching experience of my life, as I found out he was a soldier who lost both legs and was suffering from PTSD from his deployment to Afghanistan. He changed my outlook on life as he had a drive of fire in his heart. Every waking moment for him was something to appreciate and witness. Even when faced with his disability, it never seemed to get in the way of his determination. As many of the exercises required the rider to direct the horse around barrels, inclined hills, get a basket through a hoop, etc. These exercises were beneficial to people like Sean as the obstacles challenged portions of his brain and physical ability. My role in this was to lead the horse in the right direction, but also give leeway for the rider to be in control of the animal. Being able to see a smile on Sean's and many others' faces, gives me a purpose of why I give my effort to such a respectable organization. The next organization I gave my time and effort to was a veterinarian clinic by the name of Animal Crossing Veterinarian Clinic. As I would shadow and uphold the duty as a veterinarian assistant. I would complete daily tasks of everyday check-ups from simple nail trims to complex tasks of preparing surgery preparations for the present veterinarians. The knowledge of having the ability to help our furry friends is always admired in society. Returning pets to their owners is always an opportunity to see the smiles of people appreciating the care of their friends. In summary, I am very fortunate to have been given these extraordinary positions as I have learned more experience and appreciation as helping those in the community gives someone like myself bliss.
    Dog Owner Scholarship
Dogs are not called "Man's Best Friend" for a reason. I have always had an affinity for dogs, they are very affectionate, dramatic, and most importantly obedient. My first dog I grew up with was a chocolate lab by the name of Sage. Sage was the best dog you could ever ask for growing up as a kid, who loved to do anything you were doing. When it came to playing outside in the fall in the leaves she was there, in the snow, and the lake. I realized the sincerity and love that this furry animal would give me would change me into a passionate and caring person. As time would go by year after year I would learn the concept of patience, and respect from my partner in crime. Whenever one of my family members had died, Sage was there to help console and relieve some of the pain, never giving me time to stay sad for long. Soon the day would come that I'd fear would never happen, the day of my best friend leaving me. I had never felt such pain in my life until that very moment of someone so close to me passing away. It felt as if it were a dream itself, like it was to hard to believe she was gone... Though with all the tears that were shed there was one final lesson I learned, to always know wherever I go that she will always be with me and I'll never be alone. So I write this in honor of my beloved first friend Sage. I now have a dog by the name of Pear, and she is the light in my life, as she is an energetic dog and loves to be around everybody. I am fortunate to have such an amazing dog as she has taught me the value of patience, as she can be quite a hand full. She is a part of my happiness in my life, as when I come back from a long day from school, I can depend on her to express her excitement to see me everyday. I learned from owning her that she is a part of home and something I can be comforted by whenever I need someone to lay my head on. She gets me through the tough days, and makes my life full of meaning. I love my Pear through and through and am grateful that she chose me as her family.

My best back to school tip is to not procrastinate as many of us struggle while attending school. As procrastination is a gateway to an unsuccessful school year, causing a lack in motivation toward crucial aspects including organization, completion of assignments, and short attention span. As when I was attending middle school I had no motivation or the need to complete assignments and achieve the best of grades, I was more focused on playing games and hanging out with friends. I was a burden to my teachers as they knew I did not come to school to learn, and this was concerning based on what my future would look like if I continued my thought process. I turned my future around and fixed my attitude of how I perceived school, I studied more, went to group studies and participated in class discussion. I realized with my dedication, that I actually loved school and especially my math and science subjects. I completed high school in the top 10% of my class. I am now currently studying to achieve my goal of Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine.

My most important characteristic that I value in myself is my ability to keep a positive mindset. I believe my outlook in life has got me to where I am now. With growing up in low income household during my childhood I had to overcome many challenges. With those challenges lead to a strong will to overcome those uncertain circumstances. As many people who have gone through life will find themselves faced with problems in which will cause them to want to want to give up and sometimes that means giving up on their dreams. The death of my grandfather is a prime example of this scenario as I was in middle school, when I was given the news of my grandfather having been put in hospice care. I was horrified during the time as I never experienced a close family member death before. As his death caused me to spiral into a long journey of depression. My grandfather was the person I went to for advice and was my best friend. When returning back to school life I carried this weight on my shoulders and this lead to a decline in my grades. I noticed this soon after and reminded myself that my grandfather never wanted me to hold myself down in any sort. I used my memories of the time I had with him to finish school and was awarded the Presidential Award of Education. When I use my positive mindset its a gateway to unimaginable outcomes. As it has come most in handy in my passion in education. An example for this is taking a speech and presentation class in college that gave an exam on memorizing a speech and reciting to the class. I was given the Gettysburg Address in which horrified myself into thinking of early failure, but due to my advantageousness I had enough drive to study all night in acing toward remembering my speech, as I was the only person in the class to pass the exam. These are just two of the many experiences I have had to get to where I am. I am now pursuing a degree of Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine where I am using my perseverance to push through school and accomplish my lifelong goal. I believe my ability to overcome and encourage greatness will push me toward my limits and even surpass them into a life full of surprises.
    Students for Animal Advocacy Scholarship
I am passionate for animal advocacy based on my love for animals and never wanting to see any animal from feeling pain. I believe animals were made to be a companion for mankind rather than be seen as a being of abuse of emotional trauma. I have volunteered at an adoption agency for domestic pets of cats and dogs and I've seen animals that have been misused. Many of these animals have lost faith and trust in mankind and would either cower in fear or even defend themselves. These animals have either been neglected or physically subdued and have never felt the embrace or loving caring touch. Seeing these animals sometimes having wounds over their bodies shows the evident evil of the world. But I was fortunate to have the ability to rehabilitate one of the animals while working there. One of the animals named Boogey was a full bread dachshund who was physically abused throughout his life and was dumped out on the highway. When first working with him, he hid in the corner of the cage he would not allow you to enter the cage without trying to attack your legs. But with time and patience of waiting and giving him food and water, he showed signs of wanting love. I slowly would use a back scratcher with a fake hand to pet him, obviously he would attack the fake hand, but overtime he would move more and more toward being affectionate. One day coming into the shelter, he was awaiting at the front of the cage rather barking and wagging his tail, was a sign of change. As time passed I was able to completely pet him and even hold him. Finally it came to the day of Boogey's Adoption, and the first family to greet him, had their hearts melted away and immediately wanted to adopt him. As time went by and my time at the adoption center ceased to an end, I was rewarded with a letter and picture of Boogey in his forever home with his family and two younger children. This experience has caused me to continue to support the everlasting fight of animal safety in hopes of every animal is treated with the respect and admiration they need. As this has caused me to major in Animal Science and pursue Veterinarian Medicine in hopes of spreading awareness of helping animals in every need possible.

I believe it was a blessing to be the son of two military parents. It always felt like I had a normal life being under a military household, with going to the base was almost like a second home in my early childhood. My parents were both in the United States Air Force and had me when stationed in Oregon. When growing up my parents were not in the best financial situation, but that did not stop them on giving me the best childhood. I say it was a truly wonderful experience growing up in a situation of low financial means, though my parents couldn't afford the best clothing; but ensured I had clothes on my back and a warm place to stay. With starting elementary school I took the bus to and from school, while my parents would be working overtime. With being alone at home for some time during the night I was expected to complete chores at home and prepare for the morning to come. I believe with organizing and planning at such a young age has transitioned to the present day where I am going to school to better myself. As my parents have told me time and time again that education will lead to ideal success. Moving to the present, we now are currently living in Texas with my father retired and my mother working towards retirement. Living in Texas I have learned from my past experiences of the appreciation of the things I have now and the wonderful school I am attending. Attending Texas Tech has made me want to pursue a degree in Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine. With my family's military history, I will use this degree toward joining the Army as an Officer and working with military animals. I am in addition interested in traveling the world to fight against pathogenic and foreign diseases to improve the welfare of those in poor and unfortunate third-world countries. My parents even went overseas which has caused my interest in other countries, and their cultures. As I believe the United States is culturally isolated from other countries and joining the military I will be able to enrich and expose myself to others. Most importantly the idea of serving my country and the future knowledge I have not discovered is an incentive toward a promising future. Someday when I have children maybe they too will be influenced as much as I was when being raised by proud military parents.
A Dog Changed My Life Scholarship
Though with all the tears that were shed there was one final lesson I learned, to always know wherever I go that my family will always be with me and I'll never be alone. So I write this in honor of my beloved first friend Sage.
    Health & Wellness Scholarship
A healthy lifestyle is important for the general population. I believe a healthy lifestyle is important on a day-to-day basis as it can improve a person's well-being. As I am a firm believer and follower of this idea. As for my general routine of the day is to start off working out an hour, and then soon after have a well balanced breakfast afterwards. I then take a cold shower to completely wake myself up. Then after I meditate for about thirty minutes, then having a fresh breath of air outside while I draw my surroundings. Soon comes lunch where I have my fill on mainly vegetables and a side of protein and fruit. After I usually go for a walk where I like to think to myself of the pleasant encounters I had during my life. After I usually spend time with my family playing board games or watching movies with them. Then I like to play some crossword puzzles and brain games on my phone to enhance and improve my brain power. When it comes close to dinner time I like to cook dinner at home, as I believe it is more cost efficient and healthy to cook at home rather than go to a restaurant. I spend the rest of the evening watching tv and finishing with doing a little exercise. With getting at least 8 hours of sleep before I start the next day. As for the idea of a healthy lifestyle I believe a healthy lifestyle can be defined in many ways the most common idea is eating healthy and getting the proper exercise. While I believe this is a partial definition, the ideal definition is being content and happy of the life one has. Mentally is the most important part of a healthy lifestyle, as people need to be able to push themselves and focused on their goals. As someone who is emotionally driven and happy will push themselves and be satisfied with the outcome, compared to someone who is undriven and depressed will have different stance on life. As people need to satisfied with their lives or make a change to become happy. There is a rise in the amount of people who are dealing with depression and certain changes in those people lives can make an impact in not only themselves but the community. With more people who experience a healthy lifestyle will grow and develop and improve their lives.

Penicillin was a God-given gift to humanity, that to this day has constantly improved the welfare of the general population of mankind. I believe the most important scientific discovery was penicillin. As penicillin was the first drug to counter-act many bacterial based illnesses. As it was the gateway drug into improving and improvising in creating many of the antibiotics, that society has today. Without such discoveries such as penicillin much of society would be set back a century on medical discoveries including: endocarditis, bacterial meningitis and pneumococcal pneumonia, could be easily treated. Which severely cause the elderly generations to have an overall lack of healthy general lives. Thanks to the article "The use of antibiotics in COVID-19 management" scientists are finding new ways of using penicillin as a model into improving the Pfizer vaccine to be effective toward the COVID-19 virus.

A hardship that I had to overcome was in 2015 (age 14). This situation involved my grandfather who was a very important person in my life. Showed me many life lessons which sculpted the person I am now. My grandpa at the time, was diagnosed with stage 3 esophagus cancer and at a certain point, all seemed well and he was going to get better. Then as if it came from a movie, the cancer reappeared from its dormant state and double in its initial size. He was told by the doctors he was given 1 year to live (January 1,2014). In December of 2015, my dad would be receiving a call that broke my heart. I knew at the time my grandfather had cancer, and didn’t really ever experience a negative impact in my life until now. As a kid back then, all you really do is look to the positive parts of your life and really never feel like horrible experiences will ever come. Nonetheless, I remember my father telling me grandpa was not doing so well and we would have to come up for Christmas, saying “It might be your last time seeing grandpa.” That was the moment that his decreasing health actually hit me. We lived at the time in San Antonio Texas and my grandparents living about 3 hours away. I remember the night driving there and stopping at a Mexican restaurant about 10 minutes away from there house. When all of a sudden, my father’s phone rang, it being my grandma who said that my grandfather was seeming to pass away in a matter of seconds. I never seen my dad so emotional and driving so fast! All I can remember is coming to the house, running inside to see my uncle and aunt by his bedside, my grandpa looking so weak and pale. But it was a false alarm luckily. Those days went by so long, and with every moment seeming precious with him. The last memory I remember was being by his bedside watching “The Christmas Story” and looking at him with a smile. Soon it would come to Christmas Eve, where my grandpa appeared to be in a sleep-like coma, and that is when we all knew he would pass on that day. I remember we all opened our gifts up by his bedside. Opening my present from him was last moment I had with my grandpa with me, as soon as I opened my gift which were a pair of shoes, he passed away. After that day, I struggled with a bit of depression and self-motivation. Which school was pretty easy until Christmas break ended. I started to slip on my grades, unmotivated in completing my assignments, less communication, and built-up emotion. My parents saw this and confronted me on the issue. I had to do better for my future or it would affect me and all those I love. I remember going to bed and it was coincidental that my grandpa came to me and spoke to me about pursuing my career and interests. I remember giving him the biggest hug and telling him I love him, and before I woke up, I remember he said he was proud of me. After my grandpa came and visited me, I told myself to push myself to the fullest and fulfill the promises I made to myself, knowing he was always watching me. Now I am furthering my goals, currently I am a pre-vet student at Texas Tech, having a 3.2 GPA and an internship at my local veterinarian clinic.

The disappearance of many of these animals can cause a major shift in the world we live in. If many plants are to die off; it would cause a low capacity of oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere. Leading to our planet to lead into a higher global warming effect based on the greenhouse effect of the Sun. If the oxygen where to deplete at an alarming rate it can cause the atmosphere to weaken, which protects us from these natural effects. With the extinction of many trees would cause a domino effect in the animal kingdom. The bees a pollinator, would not be able to carry out the function of transferring many seeds and fertilization to other plants. Reducing the amount of plants sprouting and killing off the bee population. If the bee population where to become extinct, there would not be any other animal who could replace such a crucially needed role. Things we can do in order to reduce such a scenario to occur is to spread awareness through flyers/ posters and through technology. For if we address the issue early it can cause many people to become aware of the problem. Leading to many wanting to make a difference and lending a hand in such projects such as planting tress and improving hunting restrictions. In reducing the farming of trees and use of such plastics.

I am focused on the idea of global and domestic independence, in which all countries have an admiration to self sustain themselves, but as well help neighboring countries. For I have done this in my local community by giving my time to volunteer my time at the soup kitchen and donating food and clothes to the San Antonio Food Bank and Good Will. I want our country to greatly increase the focus in helping our nation before helping others. With our nations success in helping improve the livelihood of our nation and the economy. Then, we would be able to start a global movement in other countries following our lead. For at then will there be an increase in exports to our fellow Third-World countries to improve and develop.

Hello, my name is Joseph Robeson and I am pursuing the science portion of a STEAM degree. But before that I would like to introduce myself. I am a very optimistic and open-minded of a learner. As in many classes I have demonstrated the mastery of learning and taking many challenging paths toward my path toward success. I am one of the very few students who goes above and beyond my classmates to finish my work early and efficiently. I am a straight A student with holding a 4.0 GPA and continuing to overcome the challenges of this unfortunate school year. This school year has been the most challenging of them all. With many students including myself adjusting to this dramatic change. Few are actually putting in the dedication and effort in their final year of high school. I was like many of my fellow classmen, in a very depressed mood with no inspiration to try. But the one thing that gave me the motivation and need to succeed was the successful future I will acquire. I have to be the best of the best if I am to have a incredible life story. I want to do things many people haven't experienced. In that moment of thought has made me to be the person I am now. To give it my all in my final year in high school. My interest in major is Veterinarian Medicine in which I will be helping all furry patients that come through the door. I am dedicated in my studies and will take the stress and the amount of time (8-10 years) to acquire this degree. I will as well go into the Army to further expand my abilities; in not only helping the animals, but as well as the people around the world.
