Throughout my life, the dynamic nature of a military family has exposed me to various challenges and diverse educational environments due to my father's military service, involving a total of eight relocations across three different states. These experiences have instilled in me the values of adaptability and a strong work ethic.
One particularly memorable move occurred during the summer before middle school, challenging me to quickly adapt to a new academic system, establish friendships, and navigate unfamiliar social dynamics. Despite feeling like an outsider on my first day at the new school in Tampa, Florida, I was determined not to be consumed by the fear of the unknown. Actively engaging with my classmates and joining the chess club not only fueled my passion for the game but also connected me with like-minded students.
As I immersed myself in the chess club, I witnessed the transformative power the game held, uniting students from diverse backgrounds beyond language, age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. Inspired by this unity, I established my chess camp before my sophomore year, starting small with just my younger cousin and brother. Despite initial challenges, the camp gained momentum, expanding into additional camps and tournaments throughout the school year.
Motivated by the success of my local camp and fueled by a desire to give back to my Jamaican heritage, I established a chess club in my mother's home country, introducing orphaned children to the joy and long-term benefits of chess. The overwhelming response among these children strengthened my leadership abilities and highlighted the impact of merging passion with entrepreneurship and purpose.
These experiences have taught me the value of determination and resilience in the face of adversity. Establishing my business demanded meticulous planning, countless late nights, unwavering commitment, and an unyielding work ethic, becoming the driving force behind my academic pursuits and achievements.
Moreover, the challenges faced as a military child have instilled in me a profound sense of resilience, adaptability, and versatility. Thriving in ever-changing environments, where connecting with others is crucial, proved invaluable not only in my chess camp and school projects but also in my role as a camp counselor at the YMCA. Supervising and engaging with children from diverse backgrounds, this experience reinforced my belief in the power of connection for personal and professional growth.
As I embark on my collegiate journey, I anticipate encountering obstacles typical of the college education experience. Balancing academic demands, adapting to a new social environment, and managing time effectively are challenges I foresee. To overcome these obstacles, I plan to proactively engage with campus resources, establish a solid support network, and prioritize time management strategies.
My passions lie in fostering unity, promoting resilience, and creating meaningful connections. In my future career, I aim to make a positive impact by leveraging these values, whether through community outreach, social entrepreneurship, or leadership roles. My experiences have shaped me into someone who values hard work, perseverance, and meaningful connections. As I embark on this new chapter, I am eager to contribute my unique perspective, tenacity, and passion to the diverse community and rich educational environment that Howard University offers.
