Golf has had a big impact on who I am, even though I only started playing recently. In 2023, my grandfather introduced me to the game. At first, it was just something we did together, and I didn’t really think much of it. But pretty quickly, I started to enjoy it more than I expected. I ended up getting my own set of clubs and started going out to play almost every day. What started as a way to spend time with my grandfather turned into something I actually cared about and wanted to get better at. One of the most memorable moments I’ve had in golf was the first time I beat my grandfather in a round. For a long time, he was always better than me and was the one teaching me everything I knew. I remember trying really hard every time we played, but he would still win most of the time. When I finally beat him, it felt amazing. It wasn’t just about winning, it felt like all the time I had been putting into practicing and playing was finally showing. That moment meant a lot to me because it showed how far I had come in a short amount of time, and it made me realize that improvement really comes from consistency and effort. Starting golf later than most people also pushed me in a different way. When I played on the Saugerties varsity golf team my senior year, I knew a lot of the other players had been playing for years longer than I had. At first, that was a little intimidating, but I didn’t let it stop me. Instead, it motivated me to work harder and catch up. I spent a lot of time practicing, whether it was going to the range, working on my short game, or playing full rounds whenever I could. Golf taught me that you don’t need to have years of experience to improve, you just need to be willing to put in the time and effort every day. Golf has also taught me a lot about patience and handling frustration. It’s an easy game to get upset with because even when you hit a few good shots, one mistake can change everything. I’ve had rounds where I started off poorly and felt like nothing was going right. In the beginning, I would get frustrated and let it affect my whole game. Over time, I learned that getting angry doesn’t help at all. You just have to accept the bad shots, stay focused, and move on to the next one. That mindset has helped me outside of golf too, especially in school and other situations where things don’t always go the way I want. Another important lesson golf has taught me is honesty and integrity. In golf, there are no referees watching every shot or making sure you follow the rules. You have to be honest with yourself and keep your own score. That responsibility is a big part of the game, and it’s something I’ve come to respect a lot. It’s taught me that doing the right thing matters, even when nobody else would know if you didn’t. Overall, golf has helped shape my work ethic, patience, and mindset. It has shown me that progress takes time and that effort always pays off in the long run. As I move on from high school, I know these lessons will stay with me. Whether it’s in college, a career, or everyday life, I will carry the values I’ve learned from golf with me. What started as a simple activity with my grandfather has turned into something that has had a real impact on how I approach challenges and life in general.
