Being a good citizen, to me, isn’t just about following rules, it’s about showing up for people and doing something when it actually matters. Over the past three years as class president, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t just a title. It means listening, speaking up, and making sure people feel seen, even when it’s not the easiest thing to do. I’ve realized that being a good citizen starts with respect, but it really comes down to action.
One way I’ve tried to put that into action is through service. For the past two summers, I’ve organized a backpack drive where I collected and filled over 200 backpacks with school supplies for students who needed them. Those backpacks were delivered to kids in need in Camden, NJ. I really believe that having the right supplies can completely change how someone feels walking into school on the first day. That experience showed me that being a good citizen isn’t about big speeches or recognition, it’s about doing real, practical things that directly help people in your own community.
I also believe in speaking up for others, especially when they can’t or feel like no one will listen. That belief comes from my own experience. In 8th grade, I was bullied, and it was honestly a terrible time. I remember what it felt like to not have anyone step in. But instead of letting that hold me back, I used it to grow. When I got to high school, I made it a goal to become more confident and to be the kind of person who stands up for others. Whether someone is being bullied or just feels left out, I try to say something. To me, being a good citizen means not staying quiet when something is wrong.
That same idea connects to voting. Voting is how people speak up on a larger level. It’s how we make sure our opinions actually count. In a free country, the government is supposed to represent the people, and voting is what makes that possible. If people don’t vote, they’re basically giving up their voice, and that can lead to decisions that don’t reflect what people actually need. Voting is important because it keeps power where it belongs, with the people. Freedom isn’t something that just stays in place on its own. It depends on people being involved and paying attention. Voting is one of the most direct ways to stay involved and make sure leaders are held accountable.
The Constitution, to me, is the foundation behind all of this. It sets up how our government works and protects basic rights like freedom of speech and the right to vote. But it also represents responsibility. It gives people a voice, but it’s up to us to actually use it. Without that participation, those rights don’t mean as much.
As a senior getting ready to graduate, I know I’m about to step into a bigger role as a citizen. Everything I’ve learned, from being class president to organizing service projects to standing up for others, has prepared me for that. It’s shown me that being a good citizen isn’t passive. It takes effort, awareness, and the willingness to act.
In the end, being a good citizen means doing your part, even in small ways. It means helping others, speaking up, and staying involved. Whether it’s through community service, leadership, or voting, those actions are what keep a community strong and a nation free.
