My dad has been the biggest supporter in my life. We definitely bump heads sometimes, but that’s just part of how our relationship works. At the end of the day, he has always pushed me to do better, think bigger, and not settle for less than what I’m capable of. Even when we disagree, I know it comes from a place of wanting me to succeed. That kind of support has played a huge role in shaping who I am and what I want for my future.
After his time in the military, my dad didn’t take the easy route or look for something simple—he built his own path. He started by buying land and reselling it, taking properties that needed work and turning them into something valuable. He didn’t just sell land; he helped turn houses into real homes for people. From there, he expanded into camper sites. We live in an area with a lot of welding and traveling workers, so people come to stay for a few months at a time before moving on to the next job. He saw an opportunity, took it, and made something successful out of it.
What stands out most about my dad is that he has never been afraid to try something new. Over the years, he has worked with jet skis, farming, and now runs his own trucking company. Each of these ventures required different skills, different risks, and a strong work ethic. Watching him adapt, learn, and grow through all of these experiences has had a huge impact on me. He showed me that success doesn’t come from staying comfortable—it comes from being willing to put yourself out there and work for it.
His business experience has inspired me to want that same level of independence in my own life. I don’t just want a job where I work for someone else forever—I want to build something of my own, something I can be proud of. That’s where my passion for cars comes in. I grew up around cars, but for my dad, they were more of a hobby. For me, it became something much more important over time.
In high school, I really started to appreciate the craft behind automotive work. I began to understand the skill, patience, and attention to detail it takes to do the job right. It wasn’t just about fixing something—it was about doing quality work that lasts. That mindset stuck with me, and it’s a big part of why I want to pursue a career in the automotive field. I care about doing things the right way, not the easy way.
The way my dad approaches his businesses has directly influenced how I want to approach mine. He focuses on creating something valuable and making sure people are taken care of, and that’s exactly what I want to do with my own automotive shop one day. I want to build a shop that people can trust, where the work is honest and done right the first time. Just like my dad, I don’t want to cut corners—I want to be known for quality, integrity, and hard work.
Chip Miller Memorial Scholarship
I am applying for this scholarship because I need assistance to reach the level I know I am capable of achieving. My goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in Automotive Management and eventually open my own shop. This is not just a career choice for me—it’s something I genuinely care about. Working on cars is something I enjoy, take pride in, and want to build my future around.
I have always been interested in how things work, especially cars. Over time, that interest grew into a clear goal. I don’t just want to work in the automotive field—I want to make a real impact in it. That is why I am pursuing a degree instead of just entering the workforce right away. I want to understand not only how to repair vehicles, but also how to run a successful, honest business. Learning about management, customer service, and operations will allow me to build a shop that stands out for the right reasons.
One of the biggest reasons this matters to me is the reputation of the automotive industry. Many people have had negative experiences with mechanic shops, whether it is being overcharged, misled, or treated unfairly. Because of that, there is a lack of trust, even though there are many good shops out there. In my opinion, the industry gets a bad reputation because of a few bad businesses, even though most are trying to do the right thing.
I want to be part of changing that. My goal is to create a shop that people can trust without hesitation. I want customers to feel confident that they are getting honest work at a fair price. I want to be the kind of mechanic who explains things clearly and helps people make informed decisions, rather than taking advantage of them. Not everyone can afford a new car, so keeping their current vehicle safe and reliable is extremely important. That is something I take seriously.
When I think about my future shop, I see it as more than just a business. It is something that can make a real difference in the community. Reliable transportation affects people’s ability to get to work, support their families, and handle daily responsibilities. By providing quality service, I can help make people’s lives easier and less stressful.
Financially, pursuing this degree is a challenge. I am working while going to school, and balancing everything is not easy. The cost of education adds pressure, and this scholarship would make a meaningful difference. It would allow me to focus more on my education and less on financial stress.
Receiving this scholarship would not only help me continue my education, but also bring me one step closer to achieving my goal of opening my own shop. I am committed to putting in the work and building something meaningful. In the end, I want to create a shop that people trust, provide high-quality work, and help improve the reputation of the automotive industry in my community.
