I am a first generation college student from the Bay Area studying chemistry at UC Berkeley. Growing up in East Palo Alto, I witnessed disparities in access to healthcare, education, and environmental resources, which shaped my desire to give back through science. My passion for chemistry is deeply personal. After losing my mother to cervical cancer due to delayed diagnosis and limited access to care, I became committed to improving early disease detection. I hope to help develop affordable, accessible diagnostic tools that allow people to test and catch illnesses earlier, especially in underserved communities. Outside the classroom, I worked as a Teen Urban Forester with Canopy, where I helped plant trees and raise awareness about environmental inequities. This experience showed me how science can directly improve communities. I also mentor others by tutoring my younger brother and supporting peers in their studies. Forests have frequently appeared throughout literature for spaces of mystery, refuge, and transformation. In Jenn Givhan’s poem “I am dark, I am forest,” however, the forest becomes more than just a physical place. Through the use of Spanish diction, repetition, and vivid imagery, Givhan reintextualizes the purpose of the forest as a reflection of generational and personal experience. Rather than solely existing as a landscape, the forest becomes a place where generations of pain are carried, confronted, and ultimately reshaped.
Givhan’s incorporation of Spanish diction grounds the speaker’s experiences within her Mexican heritage, demonstrating that language itself preserves familial and cultural memory. Throughout the poem, Givhan weaves together Spanish words such as “menudo,” “bisabuela,” “tripas,” “cilantro,” “cebolla,” “chanclas,” “esposo,” “chile,” and “sopa,” without translating them for the reader (Givhan). Rather than serving as decorative additions, the Spanish words immerse the audience into the speaker’s everyday life and family history, allowing the poem to exist authentically within a Mexican cultural context. Although readers may not recognize dishes, they can still understand food as a vessel through which heritage, identity, and memory are preserved. As a result, the forest becomes more than a physical setting. It’s transformed into a symbolic landscape where these cultural traditions and inherited memories coexist, allowing Givhan to portray identity as something rooted not only in place but also in the generations that came before the speaker.
Beyond the use of Spanish diction, Givhan establishes the poem’s emotional weight through the repeated phrase “I carried,” emphasizing that the speaker inherits not only memories but also the emotional and physical burdens of previous generations. The forest further expands from solely about culture, it serves as the space in which the speaker confronts the burdens of her ancestors, allowing her to become a link to the next generation.
While repetition establishes the burdens the speaker carries, Givhan’s vivid imagery demonstrates how those burdens are transmitted through the maternal lineage and how the speaker seeks to interrupt the cycle. She writes:

The belly becomes both a source of nourishment and a vessel carrying tradition, suggesting that the women of the family inherit their culture and their suffering at the same time. The image of the “warped esposo” identifies male abuse as an immediate source of pain, while the later description of the “blue-eyed man” may also evoke European ancestry and the longer history of colonial domination. While Givhan isn’t explicit about identifying the man as a colonizer, his appearance within a poem rooted in Mexican identity allows one to read the poem through a patriarchal lens. Either way, she makes it a point that the men are the ones inflicting wounds while the women are forced to carry the consequences/abuse. However, the speaker doesn’t remain passive within this lineage. The final declaration, “I carried darkness into the forest & sliced it out,” suggests an attempt to remove the most damaging parts of that inheritance before they reach the next generation, i.e. her own daughter. The forest becomes that symbolic representation of the most damaging parts, and having the speaker slicing the darkness shows how she rejects the cycle of patriarchal violence and inherited suffering. Givhan does a final transformation of the forest into a space of renewal, where generational trauma is not only carried and confronted, but actively reshaped in the hope of creating something different for future generations.
In conclusion, Givhan transforms the forest from a literal setting into a symbolic landscape that reflects the complexities of cultural identity, inherited trauma, and the possibility of renewal. Through her use of Spanish diction, the speaker is rooted in her Mexican heritage, allowing it to become a space of tradition and memory. The repetition of phrases fills the landscape with the emotional burden passed down through the maternal lineage, while the poem’s vivid imagery reveals both the patriarchal origins of those wounds and the speaker’s determination to prevent herself from following the cycle. Rather than portraying inheritance as something inescapable, Givhan suggests that confronting the past is the first step towards reshaping the present to look towards a brighter future.

Growing up in a low-income household taught me that success isn't determined by the resources you're given, but by what you choose to do with them. My parents worked hard to provide for our family, and seeing their sacrifices motivated me to take every opportunity seriously. Financial challenges meant I couldn't take my education for granted, so I learned to be resourceful, persistent, and grateful for every chance to grow. As a first-generation Mexican American student studying chemistry at UC Berkeley, I have faced academic and financial obstacles, but I have continued working toward my goals. I've sought out research opportunities, challenged myself with difficult coursework, and remained committed even when the path became difficult. Each experience has strengthened my determination to pursue a career in scientific research. I also believe that success should be shared. Through my volunteer work with Canopy, I helped lead tree-planting events and environmental education programs in underserved communities. Seeing the impact that greener neighborhoods can have on people's health and well-being reinforced my desire to give back. In the future, I hope to use my education not only to contribute to scientific discoveries but also to mentor students from backgrounds like mine, showing them that financial hardship does not have to define their future.
Mad Genius Scholarship
The Mad Genius: Alfred Nobel
When people hear the words "Mad Genius", they often imagine someone with wild hair, scribbling impossible equations across a chalkboard or frantically mixing chemicals in a laboratory. They picture someone eccentric, brilliant, and perhaps a little unstable. While that image is entertaining, I believe a true Mad Genius is defined by something much deeper. A Mad Genius is someone whose imagination is so bold that it changes the world, even if the consequences of those ideas are impossible to predict. Few people embody that definition better than Alfred Nobel.
Born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1833, Alfred Nobel was fascinated by science and engineering from an early age. Unlike many inventors who were content with improving existing technology, Nobel pursued problems that others considered too dangerous to solve. His greatest obsession was nitroglycerin, a powerful explosive that was so unstable it could detonate unexpectedly during transportation or handling. Many believed it was too unpredictable to ever become useful. Rather than accepting that limitation, Nobel saw an opportunity. He spent years experimenting with different methods to stabilize nitroglycerin, convinced that there had to be a safer way to harness its incredible power. His relentless curiosity eventually led him to one of the most significant inventions of the nineteenth century: dynamite.
Dynamite transformed industries around the world. Mountains that once took years to carve through could now be tunneled in months. Railroads expanded across continents. Mines became more productive. Roads, bridges, canals, and countless infrastructure projects became possible because workers finally had a reliable and portable explosive. Nobel's invention accelerated human progress in ways few technologies ever have. But every revolutionary invention has another side. The same explosive that blasted through mountains could also destroy cities. Although Nobel envisioned dynamite as a tool for construction and industry, it inevitably found military applications. His invention became associated not only with building civilizations but also with making warfare more destructive.
For many people, this contradiction would define his legacy. Then, something extraordinary happened. In 1888, Alfred Nobel's brother Ludvig passed away. A French newspaper mistakenly believed Alfred had died instead and published an obituary about him. The headline reportedly described him as "The Merchant of Death is Dead." Instead of celebrating his achievements, the obituary criticized him for becoming wealthy by inventing more effective ways to kill people. Imagine reading the world's judgment of your life while you are still alive. Most people never receive the opportunity to see how history will remember them. Nobel did.
Rather than dismissing the criticism, he reflected on it. He recognized that although he could not erase his inventions, he could shape the legacy he would leave behind. When he eventually wrote his will, he directed the majority of his immense fortune toward establishing what we now know as the Nobel Prizes, annual awards recognizing individuals whose work provides the greatest benefit to humanity in fields such as physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace.
That decision is what truly makes Alfred Nobel a Mad Genius in my eyes. His genius was never limited to chemistry. It was also his willingness to question himself. Many innovators are remembered for creating something extraordinary. Nobel chose to think even further. He asked what responsibility an inventor has after changing the world. He understood that creativity is powerful, but that power carries consequences. Instead of allowing others to define his story, he transformed it himself. Today, millions of people know the Nobel Prize, yet relatively few stop to think about the complicated man behind it. His life reminds us that genius is not simply about intelligence or invention. It is about curiosity strong enough to challenge accepted limits, courage strong enough to pursue impossible ideas, and humility strong enough to recognize that every breakthrough affects real people.
In a world that often celebrates success without questioning its impact, Alfred Nobel offers a different vision of what it means to be extraordinary. He reminds us that the greatest innovators are not those who create without limits, but those who continue growing after their greatest achievements. To me, that is what a Mad Genius truly looks like. Not someone driven by chaos for its own sake, but someone bold enough to imagine what no one else can, determined enough to make it real, and wise enough to take responsibility for the legacy that follows.
STLF Memorial Pay It Forward Scholarship
One of the most rewarding experiences I have had was serving as a Teen Urban Forester with Canopy, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding the urban forest and promoting environmental equity throughout the Bay Area. What began as volunteering at tree planting events grew into an opportunity to lead others, organize community projects, and educate people about an issue that many never realize exists. As I became more involved with Canopy, I took on the role of a planting leader during volunteer events. Before each event, I helped prepare supplies, demonstrated proper planting techniques, and guided volunteers throughout the day. Many participants had never planted a tree before, so I made sure everyone felt comfortable asking questions and understood why each step mattered. Leadership was not about giving orders; it was about creating an environment where everyone felt confident contributing to a common goal.
In addition to leading planting events, I helped organize educational outreach activities that focused on environmental justice. These events introduced community members to the unequal distribution of trees between neighboring cities and neighborhoods. Growing up in the Bay Area, I saw firsthand that wealthier communities often had streets lined with mature trees while lower-income neighborhoods had far fewer. This difference affects much more than appearance. Trees lower temperatures during heat waves, improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff, and create healthier, more welcoming neighborhoods. By helping people understand these disparities, I hoped they would see tree planting not simply as beautification but as an investment in public health and equity. These experiences taught me that leadership through service is different from leadership through authority. The best leaders are willing to work alongside the people they lead. Whether I was digging holes, carrying mulch, teaching volunteers how to properly stake a young tree, or explaining why urban forests matter, I tried to lead by example. I found that people are far more motivated when they see someone willing to contribute just as much as everyone else.
My volunteer experiences have also shaped my future goals. They reinforced my belief that science should be used to improve people's lives and that meaningful change often begins at the community level. The same desire to make a difference that led me to plant trees now motivates my pursuit of a career in biomedical research, where I hope to develop technologies that improve healthcare and expand access to early disease detection. Although the fields are different, both share the same purpose: leaving communities healthier than they were before. Leadership through service matters because it creates lasting change while inspiring others to become part of that change. Every tree we planted will provide shade, cleaner air, and environmental benefits for decades. Every volunteer who learned about environmental inequities left with a greater understanding of how they could make a difference. I hope to carry those lessons with me throughout my life by continuing to lead through action, compassion, and a commitment to serving others.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
If someone had asked me a few years ago what strength looked like, I would have said it meant handling every problem on your own. I believed that asking for help meant admitting failure, and that if I stayed busy enough, worked hard enough, and ignored my emotions long enough, everything would eventually be okay. Looking back, I realize that belief was one of the biggest obstacles to my healing.
My journey with mental health began long before I recognized it. During my teenage years, my mother spent two years battling cervical cancer. Watching someone you love slowly lose their strength is something that changes you forever. My family tried to stay hopeful throughout her treatment, celebrating every piece of good news while fearing what might come next. When she eventually passed away, it felt as though the foundation of our family had disappeared overnight. My mother had always been the person who held our family together. She was the one who celebrated our accomplishments, encouraged us through difficult moments, and made our house feel like home. After she was gone, everything felt different. My dad, my younger brother, and I all grieved in our own ways. We loved one another deeply, but we were each carrying pain that was difficult to express. Instead of talking about my emotions, I convinced myself that staying strong meant keeping them to myself.
For a while, that approach seemed to work. I graduated high school and began my education at UC Berkeley believing I had moved forward. In reality, I had only postponed my grief. Once I was in college, the emotions I had buried began affecting every part of my life. I lost motivation to study. Activities I once enjoyed no longer felt exciting. Even getting out of bed or completing simple assignments sometimes felt exhausting. At the time, I blamed myself. I thought I had become lazy or undisciplined, never realizing that I was experiencing depression. Alongside my depression came severe test anxiety. No matter how much I prepared, exams became overwhelming. My mind would race, my confidence disappeared, and I often walked away knowing my performance did not reflect what I had actually learned. As my grades declined, my self-esteem declined with them. Eventually, I was placed on academic probation for two consecutive semesters and came dangerously close to being dismissed from UC Berkeley.
That period of my life was one of the darkest I have experienced. I questioned whether I belonged in college at all. I worried that I had disappointed my family, especially my mother, whose sacrifices had made my education possible. Looking back now, I realize that my GPA reflected much more than my academic ability. It reflected grief that I had never processed, depression that I had never acknowledged, and anxiety that I had never learned how to manage. The turning point came when I accepted that I could not continue living that way. For years I had believed that asking for help was something to avoid. Instead, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life and began attending therapy. Therapy did not erase my grief, nor did it instantly solve every problem. What it did provide was something I had been missing for years: the opportunity to understand my emotions instead of running from them.
I also received academic accommodations for my test anxiety. At first, I worried that accepting accommodations meant I was somehow receiving an unfair advantage. I have since learned that accommodations simply allow me to demonstrate what I know without anxiety becoming the deciding factor. They do not make college easier. They make it possible for my work to reflect my actual abilities. Perhaps the greatest lesson mental health has taught me is the importance of compassion. Before my own experiences, I often assumed that if someone looked okay on the outside, then they probably were. Now I understand how invisible these struggles can be. I know what it feels like to smile during the day while privately questioning your own abilities. Because of that, I try to be more intentional with the people around me. I check in on friends, listen without judgment, and remind others that asking for help is not something to be ashamed of. Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is simply let someone know they are not alone.
My experiences have also shaped my aspirations. I hope to pursue a career in scientific research, developing technologies that improve healthcare and make life-changing medical advances more accessible. While my career will center on science, I want empathy to remain at the center of the way I work with people. Whether I am collaborating with colleagues, mentoring younger students, or serving my community, I want to create environments where people feel supported, respected, and comfortable asking for help when they need it.
Mental health will always be part of my story, but it no longer defines who I am. Instead, it has given me a deeper understanding of resilience, vulnerability, and the value of human connection. Losing my mother changed my life forever, and living with depression changed the way I see myself and the world around me. Those experiences have taught me that healing is not about pretending pain never existed. Healing is about acknowledging it, accepting support, and choosing to move forward anyway. That lesson has shaped not only the student I am today but also the person I hope to become.

When people hear the word "selflessness," they often imagine a single heroic act. I have come to believe it is something much quieter. It is planting a tree whose shade you may never sit under. It is staying after class to help someone understand a concept before an exam. It is choosing a career not because it is the easiest path, but because it gives you the opportunity to improve someone else's life.
One of the experiences that first taught me this lesson was volunteering with Canopy as a Teen Urban Forester. At first, planting trees seemed like a simple act of community service. Over time, I learned that every tree represented something much larger. Many of the neighborhoods we worked in had fewer trees, higher temperatures, and poorer air quality than wealthier communities nearby. By planting and caring for trees, we were helping create healthier, cooler neighborhoods for families we might never meet. It showed me that meaningful service is often about investing in a future that benefits others more than yourself. I have also tried to embody selflessness in smaller, everyday ways. Throughout school, I have always enjoyed helping classmates who were struggling in chemistry and mathematics. I know how discouraging it feels to believe you are the only person who does not understand something. Rather than seeing academics as a competition, I have tried to create an environment where we could succeed together. Sometimes that meant explaining homework after class, reviewing for exams, or simply encouraging someone who doubted they belonged in STEM. Watching someone gain confidence because of a conversation we had has been just as rewarding as earning a good grade myself.
The greatest influence on my desire to help others, however, came from my mother. After she was diagnosed with Stage IV cervical cancer, I saw firsthand how devastating serious illness can be for an entire family. Losing her strengthened my resolve to pursue science not simply as an academic interest, but as a way to improve people's lives. My goal is to contribute to the development of affordable technologies that detect cancer earlier, giving families more time and more hope than mine had. While this work lies in my future, it is rooted in the same belief that has guided my service: if I have the ability to reduce someone else's suffering, I have a responsibility to try. Selflessness is not defined by recognition or grand gestures. It is measured by the willingness to use your time, abilities, and compassion in service of others, even when no one is watching. Whether planting trees, helping classmates, or preparing for a career dedicated to improving healthcare, I strive to leave every community I join a little better than I found it. That is the legacy I hope to build throughout my life.

When my mother was diagnosed with Stage IV cervical cancer, I was not asking why medicine could not cure her. I was asking why we had not found her cancer sooner. By the time she received her diagnosis, the disease had already spread, turning what could have been a treatable condition into a fight for time. She battled cancer for two years before passing away, and watching her endure that journey changed the questions I wanted to answer for the rest of my life.
I refuse to accept that so many people are diagnosed only after cancer has reached its most dangerous stages. Survival rates for many cancers increase dramatically when they are caught early, yet too many patients discover the disease only after symptoms become impossible to ignore. Whether because screening is inaccessible, expensive, inconvenient, or simply unavailable for certain cancers, families are too often told the diagnosis when their options have already narrowed. I want to help change that. That goal is what led me to study chemistry and biology at UC Berkeley. I have sought opportunities that deepen my understanding of how scientific discoveries become tools that improve patients' lives. During my internship with AbbVie in Global Regulatory Strategy, I learned about the years of research, clinical trials, and FDA review required before a medical innovation reaches patients. Although I was not designing diagnostic devices myself, I gained an appreciation for how every breakthrough depends on rigorous science, collaboration, and perseverance. It showed me that even the most promising ideas only matter if they can safely reach the people who need them.
The more I have learned, the more convinced I have become that the future of cancer care lies not only in better treatments but also in earlier detection. I hope to contribute to the development of affordable, accessible diagnostic technologies that can identify cancer before it progresses to advanced stages. Whether through blood-based screening, biosensors, or other emerging diagnostic tools, my goal is to help create technologies that are simple enough to reach people regardless of where they live or what resources they have. Earlier detection means more treatment options, better outcomes, and more families who get to spend years together instead of months. My mother's diagnosis shaped my future long before I realized it. Her experience transformed my interest in science into a commitment to solving a problem that affects millions of families. I cannot change the outcome my family faced, but I can dedicate my education and career to ensuring that fewer people hear the words "Stage IV" before they even knew something was wrong. If my work helps even one family receive an earlier diagnosis and a better chance at life, then I will know I have honored the reason I chose this path in the first place.

Mental health is often described as an invisible struggle, and that has been true in my life. For years, the people around me could not see what I was carrying because I became very good at pretending everything was fine. I smiled, went to class, and tried to keep moving forward, even though I felt exhausted, unmotivated, and disconnected from the person I used to be.
My depression began after my mother passed away following her two-year battle with cervical cancer. Losing her changed my family's life forever. She had always been the person who brought us together, and after she was gone, each of us grieved in our own way. While we supported one another as best we could, there were many emotions that went unspoken. I convinced myself that the best way to cope was to stay busy and ignore what I was feeling. Instead of processing my grief, I buried it. That decision affected every part of my life. Activities I once enjoyed no longer brought me happiness, and even getting through everyday responsibilities became difficult. College, which I had once been excited about, became overwhelming. My motivation disappeared, my grades suffered, and I began to believe that I was failing not only as a student but as a person. Depression has a way of making you believe that your worst thoughts are facts, and for a long time I believed I simply was not good enough.
The hardest part was feeling alone, even when I was surrounded by people who cared about me. I did not want to burden my family because I knew they were grieving too. Instead of asking for help, I stayed quiet. Looking back, I realize that silence only gave my depression more power. The turning point came when I finally accepted that I could not overcome everything on my own. I began attending therapy and received academic accommodations for my test anxiety. Those decisions did not erase my grief, but they gave me healthier ways to cope with it. I learned that seeking help is not a sign of weakness. It is one of the strongest choices a person can make.
Today, I still carry the loss of my mother with me, but it no longer defines every part of my life. Over the years, I have read books ranging from "The Maze Runner" to "Hamlet", "The Great Gatsby", "The Count of Monte Cristo", and "Killers of the Flower Moon". While these books span different genres and time periods, each has left me with lessons that continue to shape my outlook on life and my goals for the future. One of the first things reading taught me was resilience. In "The Maze Runner", the characters are thrown into impossible circumstances with little understanding of the world around them. Instead of giving up, they rely on curiosity, teamwork, and determination to survive. That story reminded me that uncertainty is a part of life and that progress often comes from continuing forward even when the path is unclear. As a college student, I have often thought back to that lesson whenever I face difficult classes or new challenges.

One way I have given back is by participating in community planting events in my city. Working alongside neighbors to plant trees and other greenery showed me how small efforts can create lasting change. These projects were about much more than beautifying an area. They helped create cleaner, healthier public spaces where families can gather, children can play, and future generations can enjoy nature. When I was in elementary school, one of my favorite things to do was practice multiplication tables. Most kids would probably not describe that as fun, which is exactly why it has become my answer whenever someone asks what makes me a little different. I still remember challenging myself to answer multiplication problems as quickly as possible. I would quiz myself, try to memorize larger sets of facts, and see how fast I could work through problems in my head. While my friends were excited to leave math at school, I often found myself doing extra multiplication practice simply because I enjoyed it. At the time, I did not realize how unusual that was. To me, numbers were interesting. I liked finding patterns and discovering shortcuts that made problems easier to solve. As I grew older, that interest never really disappeared. Instead, it evolved. Multiplication tables turned into algebra, algebra became calculus, and eventually I found myself studying advanced mathematics in college. While many students view difficult math problems as obstacles, I often see them as puzzles. I did not yet understand how financial barriers, delayed diagnoses, and unequal access to healthcare could completely alter a family’s future. My mother’s diagnosis came later than it should have because our family lacked consistent health insurance coverage. By the time doctors identified the cancer, it had already progressed significantly. Suddenly, our lives revolved around hospital visits, treatments, medications, paperwork, and uncertainty. Cancer entered every part of our daily lives. It affected our finances, our routines, our emotional health, and even the way we communicated with one another.
Before her illness, my mother was the emotional center of our family. Even after long workdays, she found ways to make our home feel warm and stable. During her treatment, I watched her continue trying to care for us despite her own exhaustion and pain. Seeing that strength while also witnessing how much she suffered deeply changed me. In April 2022, my mother passed away after a two-year battle with cervical cancer. Losing her was devastating. Beyond grief itself, I struggled with the feeling that the outcome may have been different if healthcare had been more accessible earlier. Watching someone you love fight for their life while facing financial and systemic barriers leaves a lasting impact. For a period of time after her passing, I struggled academically and emotionally. I felt overwhelmed trying to balance school, family responsibilities, and grief all at once.
However, this experience also transformed the way I view education, science, and my future goals. It made me realize that scientific advancements mean little if underserved communities cannot access them in time. Because of this, I became more motivated to pursue STEM and continue my studies in biology with an emphasis in microbiology and immunology. As the older brother in a first-generation Mexican household, I slowly realized that my actions mattered more than I thought. My younger brother watched everything I did, from how seriously I took school to how I handled challenges and failure. At first, I did not fully understand the weight of that responsibility. I was just trying to survive difficult classes, balance family expectations, and figure out my own future. But over time, I began to see that my journey was influencing his as well.
That realization became especially important after my mother passed away from cervical cancer in 2022. Losing her changed my family completely. Most people would probably say holding a grudge over a single chicken nugget is ridiculous.
They are absolutely correct.
But I still haven’t forgiven my younger brother.
When we were kids, McDonald’s was a special treat in our house. My parents would bring it home after a long day, and my brother and I would immediately tear through the bags before the fries even had time to cool down. One night, though, I made a decision that would change my life forever.
I got full before finishing my meal.
There was one chicken nugget left in the box.
Just one.
Now, most people probably would have eaten it anyway, but I decided to save it for later. Future me was going to microwave it as a late-night snack. A reward. A little golden treasure waiting for me in the fridge.
I remember putting the box away carefully and thinking about how good that nugget was going to taste later.
Hours passed.
Then came the moment.
I walked to the fridge, already excited, opened the McDonald’s box, and froze.
Empty.
The nugget was gone.
I just stood there staring at the box in disbelief like I had arrived at a crime scene. Then immediately, deep in my soul, I knew exactly who did it.
I stormed into the living room.
“Who ate my nugget?”
My younger brother barely even looked up.

If a close friend or loved one came to me for guidance on a major life decision, my first instinct would not be to give advice, but to listen. I have learned that when people are facing important choices, they are often overwhelmed, not because they lack intelligence, but because they are carrying fear, pressure, or uncertainty. In that situation, I would focus on creating a space where they feel heard and understood. I would ask questions about what they value, what they are afraid of, and what kind of future they see for themselves. Instead of telling them what I think is “right,” I would help them organize their thoughts so they can come to a decision they truly believe in. This approach is shaped by my own experiences growing up and navigating difficult decisions without always having clear guidance. As a first generation college student from East Palo Alto now studying chemistry at UC Berkeley, I have often had to figure things out on my own. I understand how overwhelming it can feel to make decisions that carry long term consequences, especially when you are also thinking about your family, finances, and future stability. Because of this, I try to be intentional when supporting others. I would share my own experiences if they are helpful, but I would never impose my path onto someone else. I believe the role of a mentor is not to direct someone’s life, but to empower them to take ownership of it with confidence. This belief became even more meaningful through a challenge I faced in my own pursuit of STEM. During my junior year of high school, I experienced a significant decline in my academic performance after losing my mother to cervical cancer. Her diagnosis had been delayed due to a lack of access to healthcare, and her passing deeply affected both my emotional well being and my ability to focus in school. I began to fall behind in my classes, struggled with motivation, and felt disconnected from my goals. For a period of time, I questioned whether I was capable of succeeding in a rigorous field like chemistry. What helped me begin to recover was not being told to “work harder,” but having a meaningful conversation with an advisor who took the time to understand what I was going through. Instead of judging my grades, they asked me about my goals and reminded me of the passion I once had for learning. That moment shifted my mindset. It helped me realize that I was not defined by a difficult period, and that I still had control over my future. From there, I began rebuilding my academic habits and sense of purpose. I started approaching my studies with more intention, focusing on understanding rather than just completing assignments. One of my proudest accomplishments during that time was raising my Spanish grade from a 0 to a 93 percent, which reflected not only academic improvement but also a change in mindset. I learned how to balance my responsibilities, ask for help when needed, and stay committed even when things felt difficult. These experiences shaped both my resilience and my approach to supporting others. I now understand how powerful it is to be heard, encouraged, and guided with empathy. Whether I am helping my younger brother with math or supporting my peers, I try to be someone who listens first and helps others find clarity in their own decisions. Ultimately, my journey in STEM is not just about personal success, but about using what I learn to create impact. I am committed to continuing my education in chemistry with the goal of improving access to medical testing and healthcare, especially for underserved communities like the one I come from. At the same time, I hope to be a source of support and encouragement for others navigating their own paths, just as others have been for me.
