Living on the island of Oahu, there was limited wiggle room to explore the world around me. This limitation sparked my passion for solo travel across the U.S. and my compelling desire to design travel itineraries even with no flight in sight. During these solo travels, I particularly cherished my time in Boston. Driven by my desire to escape a complacent life, I am transferring from my local college to Boston University for personal and career growth. To support my education expenses, I work two jobs that demand significant business management skills. Alongside this, I harbor a keen interest in the realm of psychology, and I aim to jointly integrate both these studies into a job of HR management. My journey began with over 100 hours of volunteer work and becoming the president of a Key Club as a freshman in high school. Today, I persistently demonstrate my dedication by working 25-35 hours a week, while managing my dad's Asian convenience store and volunteering. My unwavering commitment to my education, family, and community is elucidated by my strong work ethic and time management. It has allowed me to explore different avenues in life while enriching my interpersonal and technical skills. Thus, inspiring my interest in HR principles regarding organizational psychology, management practices, and the other various facets of human resources. As well as, a raw passion for fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace. In addition to my interest in pursuing a job in HR, I enjoy hanging out with my dog, Koko, playing tennis, and volunteering at local events.

Amid an emotional venting session, my older sister told me that I was her undying reason for being still alive. Growing up, I often found myself mediating arguments between my sister and our father, but hearing this from her took me aback. Being the reason for someone’s survival is anything but uplifting to hear. If anything, it puts an immense strain on one’s back to not be just a ray of sunshine in their life but be their entire sun.
At that moment, I couldn’t fully grasp why she felt this way or what I had done to be her sole reason for staying alive. Despite my surprise, I acknowledged the weight of her statement with heavy gratitude and empathy. I lend an ear by sitting quietly and listening. Given that I empowered her to speak, I knew it was equally important not to disrupt her flow of words, which took her so long to express. After she said her piece, I would chime in to offer her my support and advice. After she finished, I offered my support and suggested seeking professional help, if needed. Today, I am happy to report that she is thriving in New York, enjoying her college life.
After our deep talk, I had time to reflect on what I have done to be the backbone of her life. Time and time, it was the fact that I actively listened, offered her an array of advice when needed, and responded empathetically. With these characteristics, that I showcased to her, it became a standard of practice that has led people to trust me and offer support in their mental well-being.
This fall, I will be a third-year transfer student at Boston University, majoring in Psychology and Business Management. My goal is to become an HR manager, where I aim to create a positive impact on organizations and their employees. I am committed to promoting fair and equitable treatment, fostering an inclusive workplace, and advocating for employee wellness and work-life balance.
With my personal experience in conflict resolution and support, dedication to my education, and future aspirations to uphold mental health in the workplace, I believe I am a deserving candidate for this scholarship, which would greatly alleviate my financial burden of moving across the U.S.
