    In the future, I aspire to be a biological engineer specializing in natural resources and environmental systems, dedicated to conserving and promoting the responsible use of agricultural products and natural resources. To be Black is far more than the color of our skin; it is a cultural identity characterized by strength, resilience, and excellence. It is about honoring our history, celebrating our rich cultural heritage, fostering a sense of community, and excelling in various fields. This identity is a source of pride and inspiration, driving us to continue striving for greatness and making a positive impact in the world. I chose to attend an HBCU because I wanted to spend the next four years in an environment where I am valued for who I am, not as a quota. I desired to be challenged and pushed beyond my perceived limits, to prove to myself that I can achieve much more. I didn't want to constantly fight to prove my worth as a Black woman, but rather, to be recognized for the hard work that brought me here. I wanted to find a place where I would naturally fit in, knowing that there are people who understand and support me. I wanted to feel seen and heard, to form genuine interactions and friendships. I wanted to explore different aspects of myself and discover the person I aspire to be without fear or alienation. That's why I chose my HBCU.

    Losing a parent is a life-altering event but losing one due to someone else's negligence intensifies the pain and sense of injustice. This tragedy occurred at a critical moment in my life, just as I was on the verge of graduating from high school at 16 with a 4.5 GPA. The devastating news that my father had been killed in a drunk driving accident meant he would never witness one of my most important days or many future milestones. My father was my pillar of strength and support, always encouraging me to aim higher and dream big. His absence left a void that seemed impossible to fill. The physical and emotional toll on my family was profound. My mother, siblings and I were plunged into a grief that felt insurmountable. The initial shock was followed by waves of anger, sadness, and a deep sense of loss. We had to navigate our daily lives with a constant reminder that a crucial part of our family was missing, taken from us by a senseless act of negligence. Physically, the stress manifested in various ways. My mother developed chronic headaches and insomnia, while my younger siblings struggled with concentration and anxiety. I found myself juggling the responsibilities of school, providing emotional support to my family, and managing my grief. There were days when getting out of bed seemed like an impossible task, and the weight of our loss was overwhelming. Despite the overwhelming adversity, I knew my father would have wanted me to persevere and succeed. I channeled my grief into a mission: to raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence. It became my purpose to prevent other families from experiencing the same pain that we endured. I began by educating myself on the impact of alcohol, drugs, and even prescribed medications on one's driving abilities. I wanted to ensure I was well-informed and could speak from a place of knowledge and conviction. I joined several outreach programs focused on educating young people about the dangers of impaired driving. These programs provided a platform for me to share my story and connect with others who had similar experiences. As a first-generation college graduate, she achieved both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees before my brother and I had even received our high school diplomas. Despite raising us as a single parent, she ensured our needs were met and set a powerful example for us to follow. Graduating from college was a significant milestone for my mother, as she had no role model to guide her through that journey. Her determination to set an example for her children was pivotal, and her accomplishments didn't stop there. My mother also became a homeowner and moved us to the suburbs to secure a brighter future. This move was critical, as some of my friends from our previous neighborhood did not make it past 18.     I am writing to express my interest in the Team ROX scholarship. I am currently a rising sophomore at North Carolina A&T State University, majoring in biological engineering. At North Carolina A&T, I am an active member of the Honors College, the Global Medical Brigades, the National Society of Black Engineers, and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. I am also involved in Positive Direction for Youth and Family, the NC Black Alliance, and the Environmental Science Club, working on initiatives to address policy and economic issues, enhance the black community, and promote youth and leadership development. Furthermore, as a volunteer with Positive Direction for Youth and Family, I am committed to alleviating hunger and homelessness in Greensboro, a community frequently impacted by food deserts and economic disparities. We provide essential resources and support to those in need of fresh produce, meats, and canned goods. Our efforts help bridge the gap between those in need and the opportunities they deserve, fostering a more inclusive community. I am actively involved in several organizations on campus, including the Global Medical Brigades, the National Society of Black Engineers, and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. I am passionate about giving back to my community, especially to those who are marginalized and underrepresented and who lack equitable access to healthcare. Additionally, I am dedicated to advancing the application of engineering disciplines, biological concepts, technology, and mathematics. My goal is to develop resources that support innovation for sustainable agricultural, food, water, energy, and environmental systems. In the summer of 2023, I had an enriching experience working with the Prince George's County Council. In my role, I assisted the County Clerk's Office and council members by preparing materials, managing office security protocols, and ensuring meetings ran smoothly. I also engaged with community advocates and actively listened during council meetings, helping to maintain organization and efficiency. This experience enabled me to network with influential individuals and embark on my journey to create positive change at both the community and government levels. In the summers of 2021 and 2022, I dedicated my time to the energy conservation sector, offered through the Summer Youth Enrichment Program in Prince George's County, which provided me with hands-on experience and education in energy efficiency and sustainability practices. I engaged in various activities, including energy audits, conservation projects, and community outreach, aimed at promoting energy-saving techniques and raising awareness about the importance of environmental stewardship. This program empowered me to contribute to a more sustainable future while developing valuable skills and knowledge in the field of energy conservation. Through my various experiences, I have developed proficiency in Microsoft Office, strengthened my organizational skills, and learned to meet deadlines effectively. I excel at engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds, actively listening, and accepting constructive criticism for growth. My collaborative problem-solving abilities, maturity, and commitment to equity and inclusivity are strengths I bring to any team. These experiences have shaped my purpose and passion to help others be their best. I aim to promote environmental justice worldwide by creating innovative, sustainable solutions to improve the quality of life for humans and the Earth. I am passionate about teaching and inspiring the next generation to further these efforts, ensuring that our collective actions lead to a healthier, more equitable planet.
