Social media can be described as a double-edged sword when it comes to mental health. Growing up as a Peer Helper, I saw all the sides of social media. Through the program, I was taught the importance of online safety and how to help people with and without social media. I've been able to help a stranger by using social media, but I have seen good people lose their spark for what happened to them on different platforms, including myself. The two sides are not equal with the negative side being denser.
To start, on the positive side, there are online therapists, good people who want to help, but they don't have the necessary qualifications to call themselves a therapist, and there are advertisements that can push self-help tips or release phone lines. With the use of social media, I was able to help a friend come to terms with his mental situation and I was able to find him help. For myself, social media has gotten me out of some of the worst times of my online life. From online therapists to some hilarious creators, social media does have a positive side. The positive seems dense, but the negative side goes deeper.
Sadly, the negative edge is sharper. Fourteen percent of suicides are caused by social media per year, this does not include attempted suicides. Life is hard, and sometimes people can make it harder. Suicide is not the only negative product of social media. It also produces depression and anxiety. The one I have experienced more profoundly is anxiety. Some content creators enjoy sowing fear. For example, I was told, not me specifically, that one of my parents was going to die on a very specific date in the near future; I was 14. For my friends, a content creator told my friend, not them specifically, that their family would be happier without them.
There is a way out. As I said earlier, I am a Peer Helper. Alisson Moore, the sister-in-law to whom the foundation is named, strives to help young people through hard times. "The Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation" has taught hundreds of others, including me, how to help our peers academically and emotionally. I wish this could be a worldwide program, but they only started in 1998. Even though "The Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation" stops teaching people after high school, that doesn't mean the students who went through the program must stop spreading their knowledge. If the people who know how to help start sharing their knowledge with the public, the world will heal. We can also report content creators or comments made by strangers to slow their spread of hate. The more people see the problem, the faster it can be resolved.
