Bio

I am not just applying for a scholarship—I am fighting for a different future than the one I was handed. I come from a background where stability was not guaranteed and opportunities were not always within reach. I’ve seen what happens when potential goes unnoticed, and I’ve made a promise to myself that I will not become another story of “what could have been.” Instead, I am choosing to become proof of what can be. Despite the challenges around me, I’ve stayed focused on building something better. I balance school, responsibilities, and long-term goals while working toward a future in culinary arts and business. I am not afraid of hard work—hard work has been my reality. What I want now is direction, mentorship, and the chance to turn discipline into a career. What makes me a strong candidate is not just my ambition, but my persistence. I do not give up when things get difficult. I adapt, I learn, and I keep moving forward even when the path is unclear. I carry my family, my future, and my goals with me in everything I do. This scholarship would not just support my education—it would change the trajectory of my life. It would bring me one step closer to breaking generational cycles, building stability, and eventually creating opportunities for others who are standing where I once stood. I am not asking for an easy path. I am asking for a fair chance to earn the future I am already working for.

I am not just applying for a scholarship—I am fighting for a different future than the one I was handed. For many, a career path is a ladder that has been held steady by generations of stability. For me, that ladder was something I had to build myself, piece by piece, often while the ground beneath me felt uncertain. I come from a background where stability was not guaranteed and opportunities were not always within reach. I’ve seen firsthand what happens when potential goes unnoticed or is stifled by circumstance, and I’ve made a vow to myself: I will not become another story of "what could have been." Instead, I am choosing to become living proof of what can be accomplished through relentless intent. Growing up in an environment where resources were scarce taught me a brand of resourcefulness that cannot be learned in a classroom. It forced me to look at the world through the lens of a problem-solver. Whether it was managing household responsibilities or navigating the complexities of my education, I learned early on that "no" was simply a starting point for a different strategy. This resilience is the foundation of my interest in Innovation Design. I don’t just want to participate in an industry; I want to redesign the way things work to ensure they are more efficient, more inclusive, and more sustainable. Despite the challenges around me, I’ve stayed focused on building something better. Currently, I balance the rigors of school, heavy personal responsibilities, and ambitious long-term goals. My primary focus lies at the intersection of Culinary Arts and Business. To some, cooking is a craft; to me, it is a language of discipline and a vehicle for entrepreneurship. The kitchen is one of the few places where hard work yields immediate, tangible results. However, my vision extends beyond the kitchen line. I am working toward a future where I can own and operate businesses that provide not only high-quality service but also jobs and mentorship for my community. I am not afraid of hard work—hard work has been my reality for as long as I can remember. But I have reached a point where effort alone is not enough to bridge the gap between where I am and where I need to be. What I seek now is direction, mentorship, and the chance to turn raw discipline into a refined career. I have the drive to outwork anyone in the room, but I am looking for the keys to the rooms I haven’t been allowed into yet. I want to understand the mechanics of business at a high level so that I can build an empire that lasts, ensuring that the financial instability I experienced ends with my generation. What makes me a strong candidate is not just my ambition, but my persistence. Ambition is the spark, but persistence is the fuel that keeps the fire burning when things get difficult. I have faced moments where the path forward was completely obscured by personal or financial hurdles. In those moments, I didn’t stop; I adapted. I learned to be my own advocate, to seek out information, and to keep moving forward even when I had to walk in the dark. I carry my family, my future, and my goals with me in everything I do. Every success I achieve is a victory for everyone who came before me and a bridge for everyone who will come after. This scholarship would not just support my education—it would change the trajectory of my entire life. It represents the difference between struggling to survive and having the space to thrive. It would bring me one step closer to breaking generational cycles of poverty and lack of opportunity. My ultimate goal is to build a life of such stability that I can eventually create opportunities for others who are standing exactly where I once stood. I want to be the mentor I wish I had, and the benefactor for students who have the talent but lack the funds. I am not asking for an easy path or a handout. I have already proven that I can handle the weight of a difficult path. I am asking for a fair chance to earn the future I am already working for. With the support of this scholarship, I will take the discipline I’ve honed through hardship and apply it to my studies in design, business, and the culinary arts to create a legacy of excellence.

Growing up in Dallas, I learned early that a dinner table can either be a place of abundance or a quiet reminder of what we lack. In my household, financial struggle wasn’t a headline; it was the steady rhythm of our lives. As a young Black man, I recognized the weight of generational cycles surrounding me—cycles of debt and limited opportunity. However, I chose early on that while these circumstances were my starting point, they would never be my finish line. My ambition is to attend the Culinary Institute of America, not just to master a craft, but to use that craft as a catalyst for community restoration. My commitment to serving underserved populations began in my own neighborhood. Recognizing that many of my peers and elderly neighbors lived in a "food desert" with limited access to affordable, nutritious meals, I launched a self-initiated project called **"The Commensal Table."** What started as a way to stretch my family’s own modest groceries evolved into a monthly community dinner and nutrition workshop held at a local community center. I took the initiative to partner with local vendors to secure "ugly" produce that would otherwise be discarded and transformed it into high-quality, chef-inspired meals for families facing food insecurity. This project wasn't just about feeding people; it was about dignity. I wanted to prove that marginalized communities deserve more than just survival—they deserve excellence. By leading these sessions, I taught younger children basic culinary skills and showed them that creativity is a tool for self-sufficiency. I don’t seek a scholarship out of a need for pity, but as an investment in a proven work ethic. I have spent years balancing the demands of my environment with an unwavering focus on culinary innovation, developing the resilience required to thrive in high-pressure environments. True leadership is defined by what we build for those coming up behind us. By pursuing my education at the CIA, I am breaking a glass ceiling that has historically constrained my family. My goal is to return to Dallas to establish a permanent culinary social enterprise that employs and trains at-risk youth. I possess the hunger to outwork my yesterday and the vision to transform my passion into a vehicle for generational change. I am ready to prove that where you come from only matters if it gives you the strength to go exactly where you belong.
