For many years, I believed my future was already decided. I had always planned to attend Duquesne University, a predominantly white institution that I had my heart set on from an early age. I researched the school, imagined myself walking across campus, and confidently told others that this was where I would one day enroll. Duquesne represented familiarity, structure, and a path I felt was safe and predictable. I never seriously considered that my plans would change, because I believed I already knew exactly where I belonged. In 2022, I attended my first Mid-Winter Meeting through my church. At the time, I viewed the trip as a meaningful spiritual experience but not something that would shape my academic future. During this meeting, I was introduced to Livingstone College, and almost immediately, my perspective shifted. Learning about the school’s history, values, and mission sparked a sense of curiosity that quickly grew into excitement. As I explored what Livingstone had to offer, I felt something I had not felt before a genuine sense of belonging. That initial feeling did not fade when I returned home. Instead, it grew stronger with time. I began researching Livingstone College extensively, learning about its academic programs, campus culture, and student life. I visited the campus whenever possible, and with each visit, my connection to the school deepened. Over the years, I became so familiar with Livingstone that I felt confident in my understanding of what the college stood for and how it supported its students. It became clear to me that Livingstone was not just a place to attend college, but a community where I could thrive. One of the most important reasons Livingstone College resonates with me is how closely it aligns with my career goals. I plan to major in Early Childhood Education and become an early childhood education teacher. My passion for teaching comes directly from my mother, who has been a teacher and role model throughout my life. Watching her work with children taught me that education is not only about academics, but also about patience, compassion, and encouragement. She showed me how influential teachers can be in shaping a child’s confidence and future, and I want to have that same impact.Livingstone College’s emphasis on leadership, service, and community reflects the values I want to carry into my future classroom. I believe children learn best in environments where they feel supported, understood, and inspired values that Livingstone promotes both inside and outside the classroom. The college’s commitment to nurturing students academically and personally mirrors the kind of educator I strive to become.Choosing Livingstone College taught me an important lesson about growth and self-discovery. While Duquesne University once felt like the right choice, my experience at the Mid-Winter Meeting showed me that sometimes the best opportunities are the ones we never planned for. What began as a church trip turned into a defining moment that reshaped my goals and my future. Livingstone College is the place where I see myself growing into an educator, a leader, and a positive influence in the lives of children. I am confident that this institution will help me achieve my dreams and prepare me to give back to my community through education.
