Weld Our Soul Scholarship
Choosing a career path in welding has been guided by a combination of personal interests, practical considerations, and a desire to contribute meaningful work to society. I have always been drawn to hands-on tasks and environments where I can actively create, repair, and improve things rather than sit behind a desk all day. Welding stood out to me because it allows me to work directly with my hands while using skill, precision, and problem-solving to produce something tangible and lasting. There is a strong sense of accomplishment that comes from seeing a finished weld or completed project and knowing that my work plays a real role in building or maintaining something important.
Another factor that guided me toward welding is my interest in learning a trade that values skill, discipline, and continuous improvement. Welding is not just a job it is a craft that requires patience, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. As a welder, there are many techniques to master, such as MIG, TIG, and stick welding, each with its own challenges and applications. This constant opportunity to learn and improve motivates me, as I enjoy developing specialized skills and becoming more proficient over time. Welding also offers a variety of career paths, including construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, pipeline work, and even artistic metalwork, which makes the field both flexible and exciting.
Practical reasons have also influenced my decision to pursue welding. Skilled welders are in high demand, and this demand continues to grow as infrastructure ages and new projects are developed. Welding provides stable employment opportunities and the potential for good wages, especially for those who are certified and willing to work in specialized or challenging environments. Knowing that welding offers job security and financial stability makes it an attractive career choice, especially in today’s economy. It gives me confidence that my skills will remain valuable and relevant in the future.
Welding plays an extremely important role in today’s society because it supports nearly every major industry that people depend on daily. From buildings and bridges to cars, ships, and airplanes, welding is essential to the construction and maintenance of structures and machines. Without welders, much of the infrastructure that keeps communities functioning would not exist or would become unsafe. Welders help ensure that structures are strong, durable, and capable of withstanding stress, weather, and time. Their work directly impacts public safety and quality of life.
In addition, welding is vital to industries such as energy and transportation. Pipelines that carry water, oil, and gas rely on strong, reliable welds to prevent leaks and environmental damage. Power plants, renewable energy systems, and manufacturing facilities also depend on welders to build and maintain critical equipment. As society continues to grow and modernize, the need for skilled welders will remain essential to supporting innovation and progress.
Beyond its practical importance, welding also contributes to economic growth. Welders help keep businesses operating, create jobs, and support local and national economies. Their work allows other industries to function efficiently, making welding a foundational trade that often goes unnoticed but is deeply impactful. Overall, welding is a career that combines personal fulfillment with social responsibility, allowing me to build a future for myself while contributing valuable skills that society truly depends on.
Rev. and Mrs. E B Dunbar Scholarship
As a minority pursuing higher education, I have faced several obstacles that have challenged me academically, financially, and personally. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating a system where people like me are often underrepresented and sometimes underestimated. There have been moments when I felt pressure to work harder just to prove that I belonged in academic spaces. This experience, while difficult, has also strengthened my determination and resilience. It pushed me to stay focused on my goals even when the path felt uncertain or overwhelming.
Financial barriers have also played a major role in my journey. Coming from a background where resources were limited, the cost of tuition, books, tools, and transportation has been a constant concern. Balancing school with work has not always been easy, and there were times when exhaustion made it difficult to stay motivated. However, these challenges taught me valuable lessons about time management, discipline, and perseverance. I learned how to prioritize my education while still supporting myself and my family, which has shaped my strong work ethic and sense of responsibility.
Another obstacle I have faced is the lack of guidance and representation in higher education. As a minority student, I did not always have access to mentors or role models who shared my background and experiences. At times, this made the process of applying for programs, understanding financial aid, and planning a career path feel confusing and intimidating. I often had to seek out information on my own, ask questions, and advocate for myself. While this was challenging, it helped me become more independent and confident in my ability to navigate unfamiliar environments.
Despite these obstacles, my pursuit of higher education has given me a strong sense of purpose. Education represents more than personal success for me it is a way to create opportunities not only for myself but also for others in my community. In the future, I plan to use my education to give back by serving as a role model and mentor for younger students, especially those from minority or underserved backgrounds. I want them to see that higher education and skilled careers are achievable, even when the odds feel stacked against them.
I also plan to give back by sharing knowledge and skills within my community. Whether through my career, community programs, or volunteer work, I want to help create pathways for others to gain practical skills, confidence, and stability. Many communities lack access to resources, career guidance, and exposure to trades or educational opportunities. By being actively involved, I hope to help bridge that gap and encourage others to pursue education or training that can lead to long-term success.
