Learner Math Lover Scholarship
I used to hate math. Subjects like trigonometry, algebra, and especially calculus were frustrating, and I often felt that math just wasn’t for me. I was more interested in biology, where I could focus on understanding living systems rather than solving equations.
That changed when I took a biostatistics course. For the first time, I saw how math could be applied in a practical way, especially in the context of biology and public health. I began to understand how data and numbers could help answer important questions and support research. This made math more interesting and useful to me.
Biostats helped me see math differently. I became more comfortable with it and started to enjoy how it helped me organize information and solve real-world problems. This experience influenced my decision to pursue a Master’s in Epidemiology, a field that relies heavily on statistics and data analysis.
Now, I see math as a valuable tool that complements my interest in biology. I’ve gone from avoiding math to using it regularly and appreciating its role in science and public health. It’s a subject I once struggled with, but now it’s one I rely on and continue to build on in my studies.
STEAM Generator Scholarship
As a first-generation immigrant, my journey through education has been shaped by unique challenges, triumphs, and a deep desire to make a meaningful impact in the world. I moved to the United States at a young age, leaving behind everything I knew, arriving in a country where I had to adapt not only to a new culture but also to a completely different educational system. My parents, though incredibly supportive, had not attended college and were unfamiliar with the ins and outs of higher education, making it even harder to navigate the process.
The first obstacle I faced was the language barrier. When I arrived in the United States, I struggled to understand English, which made schoolwork and connecting with my peers a daunting task. It took a lot of extra effort to catch up, and I found myself spending countless hours outside of school, practicing English and adjusting to the academic expectations here. However, despite these early struggles, I developed a resilience that has carried me through every challenge. I was determined to succeed, not just for myself, but to set an example for others in my community who might have felt similarly isolated in the system.
Being a first-generation immigrant also meant that I didn't have the same guidance and resources that many of my peers had. My parents, though supportive, did not have the experience of navigating higher education themselves. This lack of guidance made it difficult for me to fully understand the importance of networking, building relationships with mentors, and taking full advantage of the academic resources available to me. Nonetheless, I found my way by seeking help from professors, peers, and academic advisors, slowly carving out a path toward my goals.
The financial burden of pursuing higher education has been another hurdle. As the first in my family to attend college, I have had to navigate the complexities of financial aid, scholarships, and student loans largely on my own. This financial uncertainty has often felt like a heavy weight on my shoulders, but it has also fueled my ambition to succeed and prove that, despite these challenges, I can make a difference.
Right now, I am pursuing a Master’s in Epidemiology with the goal of becoming an epidemiologist focused on public health in underserved communities. My journey has only strengthened my passion for using science to make a positive impact. I hope to help break the cycle of health disparities in communities like my own, where access to proper healthcare is limited, and to inspire others who feel marginalized to pursue their dreams.
This scholarship would not only relieve the financial burden of continuing my education, but it would also serve as an affirmation of the hard work and determination that has brought me this far. I am committed to pushing forward, despite the barriers, and contributing to a more inclusive and accessible future in education and healthcare. Through this scholarship, I can continue my education and pursue my dream of becoming a leader in public health, helping to create change for those who need it most.
Dr. Michael Paglia Scholarship
Growing up with dark spots and acne as a teenager, I became intimately familiar with how skin conditions can deeply affect a person’s confidence, self-worth, and overall mental health. While these concerns may appear superficial to some, they carry profound emotional weight, especially for young people navigating the already difficult process of self-acceptance. These early experiences inspired me to pursue a career in dermatology, where I can help others feel seen, valued, and healthy in their own skin.
Today, I’m taking my first steps toward that goal by pursuing a Master of Science in Epidemiology. Though it may seem like an unusual path to dermatology, I believe that a strong foundation in epidemiology will allow me to better understand the population-level patterns and social determinants of skin health. It will also provide me with the research skills to advocate for equity in dermatologic care and inform evidence-based interventions for underserved communities.
As a first-generation college and graduate student from a lower socioeconomic background, pursuing higher education has been both a privilege and a challenge. My family immigrated to this country with little more than hope and determination. They worked tirelessly to provide me with opportunities they never had, even when that meant going without. I’ve had to learn how to navigate complex academic systems, financial obstacles, and bureaucratic hurdles largely on my own. But I never let those barriers define me. Instead, they fueled my ambition.
I chose the field of healthcare because I want to be a source of healing, understanding, and change for others who feel overlooked or misunderstood. I believe dermatology, often perceived as a luxury specialty, must be more accessible, especially for people of color and low-income populations who often face higher rates of undiagnosed or misdiagnosed skin conditions. By combining my epidemiological training with clinical expertise in dermatology, I aim to improve access to care, promote skin health literacy, and advocate for inclusive research that represents diverse communities.
In the long term, I plan to become a practicing dermatologist and public health advocate, focused on both treating patients and driving research that explores skin-related health disparities. Whether it’s through community-based outreach, culturally competent care, or population-level studies, I want to help reshape how we think about skin health, not as a cosmetic issue, but as a vital component of overall well-being.
Receiving this scholarship would directly support my MSc in Epidemiology, which is an essential step toward my larger goal. It would ease my financial burden and allow me to focus on my studies while preparing for medical school. More importantly, it would honor the legacy of Dr. Michael Paglia, a physician who believed in mentorship, compassion, and giving back to others.
Like Dr. Paglia, I hope to use my life and career to open doors for those who come after me. This scholarship would not only help me overcome a financial hurdle but would also represent a shared belief that ambition, when supported, can truly change lives.

Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
The universe, in all its grandeur and complexity, mirrors the intricate systems that sustain life at the smallest scales. From the delicate choreography of cells within our bodies to the vast interplay of galaxies, I believe that to understand the universe is to understand life itself. Biology, for me, is the lens through which I seek to grasp the essence of our existence—how the tiniest molecular shifts shape ecosystems and how our bodies echo patterns found across the cosmos.
Biology is often described as the study of life, but I see it as the study of connection. Every heartbeat, every neural impulse, reflects a dance that has been evolving for billions of years, tied inseparably to the cosmic forces that birthed us. The atoms that construct our DNA were once part of dying stars, scattered across galaxies before converging on this fragile planet. In this way, the pursuit of biology feels deeply poetic—an exploration not only of what makes us human, but what ties us to the larger universe.
I find immense wonder in the simple processes that sustain life. The replication of cells, the repair of damaged tissue, and the immune system’s vigilance seem ordinary, yet they are symphonies of precision, occurring trillions of times each day. This fascination propels me to pursue biology not as a career alone, but as a lifelong quest to understand the mechanisms that allow life to persist in an otherwise chaotic universe.
There is something profoundly romantic in the way biology reveals the hidden intricacies of life. Beneath the surface of every living being lies a narrative written in molecular language, passed down through generations. This silent conversation across millennia tells the story of survival, adaptation, and profound interconnectedness. When I think about cells communicating, dividing, and collaborating to maintain balance, I see reflections of larger cosmic processes—the way stars orbit in galaxies or the gravitational dance of celestial bodies. It reminds me that the universe and life are not separate, but two sides of the same reality.
As I delve deeper into the field, my focus sharpens toward dermatology. Our skin, often overlooked, is an extraordinary barrier between the internal and external world, reflecting the environments we inhabit and the journeys we endure. Through biology, I hope to decode the signals hidden in the layers of our skin—signs of health, disease, or distress—and use that knowledge to heal and restore. The skin is our body’s largest organ and acts as a record keeper, bearing the marks of time, exposure, and experience. It is the interface through which we engage with the world, and its health is intrinsically linked to our overall well-being.
Dermatology fascinates me not only because of its tangible impact on physical health but because of its influence on mental and emotional well-being. Skin conditions can shape the way individuals perceive themselves and interact with others, often influencing confidence and self-esteem. By addressing dermatological concerns, I see an opportunity to restore not only physical health but also a sense of self-worth and empowerment in patients. This holistic aspect of dermatology aligns with my broader vision of biology as a discipline that touches every facet of life.
However, my aspirations extend beyond clinical practice. I envision myself contributing to public health initiatives and advancing research that highlights the connections between environmental factors and dermatological conditions. Climate change, pollution, and ultraviolet radiation—forces shaped by the broader workings of the universe—impact our skin and health in profound ways. Understanding these relationships is crucial not only for individual well-being but for the health of communities around the world. Skin diseases are often early indicators of underlying systemic issues, making dermatology a critical field for detecting and addressing larger public health challenges.
The intersection of biology, environmental science, and dermatology offers a unique opportunity to address pressing global health concerns. For example, rising global temperatures have been linked to an increase in skin cancers and heat-related conditions, while air pollution exacerbates inflammatory skin diseases. By investigating these connections, I hope to contribute to a broader understanding of how environmental changes influence human health and advocate for policies that promote sustainable living practices.
To better grasp the universe’s influence on biology, I plan to pursue an MPH in epidemiology. This will equip me with the tools to analyze patterns of skin diseases on a population level, fostering interventions that address disparities in dermatological care. Epidemiology provides the framework to identify trends, assess risk factors, and develop strategies to mitigate the burden of skin diseases on vulnerable communities. By blending the micro and the macro—biology and public health, cells and stars—I hope to craft a career that bridges the gap between personal healing and planetary well-being.
The prospect of studying epidemiology excites me because it allows for a systemic approach to understanding health. While dermatology focuses on individual patients, epidemiology broadens the scope to entire populations, enabling me to identify patterns and implement large-scale solutions. This dual perspective reflects my belief that health is not solely an individual matter but a collective responsibility shaped by social, environmental, and economic factors. By addressing health disparities and promoting equitable access to dermatological care, I hope to contribute to a more just and compassionate world.
In a world where much remains unknown, I am driven by the belief that every layer of understanding brings us closer to the truth. Biology allows me to unravel the mysteries within, while reminding me that we are, in essence, reflections of the universe’s ongoing evolution. To study life is to study the cosmos—to trace the origins of existence and, perhaps, glimpse the profound connections that bind us all.
As I stand at the threshold of my academic journey, I am filled with a sense of wonder and purpose. The pursuit of biology is not merely a career choice but a calling—an invitation to participate in the grand narrative of life. Whether through dermatology, epidemiology, or public health, I am committed to contributing to the collective effort to understand and preserve the delicate balance that sustains us. This journey, like the universe itself, is vast and filled with unknowns, but it is one I embrace with curiosity, determination, and hope.

The journey to pursue a career in medicine is deeply personal for me. Growing up, I witnessed the impact of health challenges on my family, which shaped my desire to become a dermatologist and contribute to the well-being of others. One of the most significant moments in my family’s history was the loss of my paternal grandfather to terminal colon cancer. He was still young, and while I was just a baby at the time and have no direct memories of him, his passing left a profound gap in the heart of my family. The grief and hardship that followed underscored for me how illness can ripple through the lives of loved ones, leaving lasting emotional and psychological scars.
As I grew older, I began to understand more deeply how health issues affect not only the patient but their entire support system. This realization strengthened my commitment to the medical field. My own struggles with dark spots as a teenager, which affected my confidence, further emphasized the importance of addressing health concerns that might seem superficial but can significantly impact mental well-being. The relief and empowerment I felt after receiving treatment reinforced my passion for dermatology and the desire to help others experience similar healing.
Currently, I am working toward medical school by pursuing an MPH in epidemiology. This combination will allow me to address individual patient needs while contributing to broader public health initiatives that target dermatological disparities. I envision providing care to underserved communities, ensuring that quality dermatological treatment is accessible regardless of socioeconomic status.
Beyond clinical practice, I aspire to lead outreach programs focused on skincare education and preventive care, especially in marginalized populations. By promoting health literacy and early intervention, I hope to reduce the long-term impact of dermatological conditions. Additionally, I aim to mentor future medical students from diverse backgrounds, fostering greater inclusivity within the field.
Losing my grandfather to cancer serves as a constant reminder of why I chose this path. His memory fuels my drive to make a difference, honoring his legacy by dedicating my career to alleviating the suffering of others. The challenges I have faced, including personal and financial obstacles, have taught me resilience and deepened my empathy—qualities I believe are essential for any physician.
Through my medical career, I hope to contribute to a future where healthcare is equitable and compassionate. This scholarship would help alleviate the financial strain, allowing me to focus on my studies and continue striving toward making a meaningful impact in medicine.

Growing up as an AB 540 student, I encountered obstacles that extended far beyond the classroom. When my family immigrated to the U.S. at 13, I had to navigate not only a new culture and language but also the limitations that came with my legal status. I quickly realized that many opportunities my peers pursued—such as scholarships, internships, and certain academic programs—were often unavailable to me. The uncertainty about my future loomed over me, making it difficult to envision a clear path forward.
Despite excelling academically, my AB 540 status made me question whether my hard work would lead to the same rewards as my classmates. I often felt disheartened watching others advance with ease while I faced roadblocks simply because of my immigration status. However, rather than letting these challenges discourage me, I became determined to carve out a path for myself.
I focused on areas within my control, dedicating myself to my studies and seeking out programs and resources specifically designed for undocumented students. I connected with mentors who understood the complexities of my situation, and they guided me toward opportunities that aligned with my academic goals. I graduated with a degree in Biology and am currently working toward a future in dermatology. However, I also recognize the value of broadening my impact on public health, which is why I plan to pursue a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in epidemiology.
Epidemiology offers a chance to address health disparities and study the underlying factors contributing to disease and illness in underserved communities. As someone who has experienced firsthand the inequities faced by marginalized groups, I feel a strong sense of responsibility to advocate for and serve populations that are often overlooked. By combining my passion for medicine with a public health focus, I hope to contribute to systemic change, addressing health issues at both the individual and community levels.
To anyone facing similar adversity, I want to emphasize that your circumstances do not define your potential. Seek out communities, mentors, and resources that uplift and empower you. There will be times when the path feels isolating or unfair, but resilience and determination will carry you forward. Every challenge you overcome shapes your character and strengthens your resolve to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.
My journey as an AB 540 student has shaped who I am today, and I am committed to using my experiences to inspire and support others in their pursuit of higher education and professional success.

Rodney James Pimentel Memorial Scholarship
A situation that comes to mind where I was able to offer guidance to a close friend exemplifies how education and encouragement can change a person’s life. After high school, my friend began working and had to leave the country for a while to resolve his immigration status. Upon his return, he worked various jobs, but none of them gave him the fulfillment he sought. He knew his true calling was to become a teacher, but he felt insecure about how to start, and even more so, his family discouraged him. They believed that he was too “old” to return to school and pursue his dream.
When he shared his concerns with me, I provided advice to the best of my ability. He didn’t know where to begin, or if his dream was even realistic at his age. However, I knew that the only thing standing in his way was his own fear and lack of confidence. I encouraged him to believe in himself and reminded him that it’s never too late to follow one’s dreams. I told him that his passion for teaching was valuable and that it was possible to balance work and education, even if it meant taking small steps. I also emphasized that pursuing higher education isn’t about following a timeline set by others but about finding personal fulfillment and making a positive impact on the world.
I walked him through the practical steps of researching teaching programs, finding scholarships, and considering flexible study options for non-traditional students. I assured him that his life experience would add depth to his teaching, and that there was no age limit for learning or growth. It was the first step of many, but I believed that if he took it, it would lead him to a much happier and fulfilled life.
Fortunately, my friend took my advice to heart. He enrolled in college and began his journey to becoming a teacher. Today, he is working hard to achieve his goal, and while the journey hasn’t been easy, he is more committed than ever to making a difference. This experience reinforced for me how important it is to offer support and belief in others, especially when they may doubt themselves.
Just as I’ve seen how guidance can help someone navigate a life-changing decision, I’ve also encountered challenges in my pursuit of a STEM degree. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced has been access to resources and opportunities due to my undocumented status. Many doors were closed to me simply because of my immigration status, and that was often disheartening. There were moments when I questioned whether I should continue on this path, especially when I saw my peers receiving opportunities that I couldn’t access.
However, I learned that perseverance and resourcefulness are key in overcoming these barriers. I sought out other avenues for support, such as community programs, mentors who understood my situation, and scholarships that were available to undocumented students. While the journey has been difficult, it has also been one of self-discovery and resilience. I learned that my passion for biology and medicine was strong enough to fuel my persistence, even when the road ahead seemed unclear. I had to be creative in finding solutions to the challenges I faced, whether that meant relying on unconventional resources or building a network of like-minded individuals.
For future students pursuing STEM, especially those who may face similar challenges, I would recommend persistence and adaptability. It’s crucial to be proactive and seek out resources that may not be immediately obvious. Build a network of mentors and peers who can offer support, and remember that setbacks are a natural part of the process. Don’t let one obstacle define your journey—take each challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow. Surround yourself with people who believe in your potential. Ultimately, pursuing a degree in STEM is not just about academic achievement, it’s about pushing through adversity, embracing opportunities, and finding fulfillment in the work that you do.
In the end, education is not just about what we learn; it’s about how we learn from each other, the challenges we face, and the people who help us along the way. Just as I was able to guide my friend to take the first step toward his dream, I now work to overcome the obstacles in my own journey, knowing that each challenge brings me closer to the person I am meant to be.

Success, to me, is not defined by a single moment or accomplishment but by the continuous process of growth, self-improvement, and the pursuit of meaningful goals. It is about feeling content with who you are, what you have, and the progress you’ve made toward becoming the best version of yourself. It’s not about perfection, but rather about striving for progress and embracing the journey.
For me, success starts with a strong sense of self. It’s about knowing who I am, understanding my strengths and weaknesses, and appreciating the qualities that make me unique. This foundation gives me the confidence to pursue my dreams and take on new challenges, knowing that my journey is a reflection of my personal growth. Every achievement, no matter how big or small, becomes a stepping stone toward a larger goal, and success means setting new goals as you achieve old ones. I believe that there is always room for improvement, and true success lies in the constant pursuit of becoming better—whether that’s through academic pursuits, career milestones, or personal development. The process of learning and evolving never stops, and that constant striving for betterment is what defines success in my life.
Another crucial element of success is the relationships we build along the way. Having a supportive network of family, friends, and mentors who understand and care for you makes the pursuit of goals more fulfilling. These relationships provide emotional strength during tough times and share in the joy of achievements. Success is not just about individual accomplishments; it’s about being part of a community that helps and encourages one another. Surrounding myself with people who love and support me is a form of success in itself, as it provides a sense of belonging and purpose. I truly believe that when we lift others up, we rise together. Having people who believe in you and your potential can motivate you to push through the difficult times and keep striving toward your goals, even when the path isn’t easy.
Moreover, I believe that success is also about giving back. As I continue on my educational and career path, I aim to help others achieve their dreams, especially those who may face obstacles similar to my own. As an AB 540 student, I’ve experienced firsthand the difficulties of navigating the educational system and securing opportunities, and I want to be a resource for others who find themselves in similar situations. The challenges I’ve faced have only strengthened my resolve to help others overcome their own hurdles. By helping others, I not only contribute to their success but also grow personally and professionally. I’ve learned that success isn’t just about personal achievement but also about making a positive impact on the lives of others. The opportunity to give back and help someone else achieve their goals is a form of success that is both fulfilling and meaningful.
This scholarship opportunity will play a significant role in helping me achieve success. It will provide the resources needed to further my education and career in the healthcare field, where I can make a meaningful impact. As I work toward my goal of becoming a dermatologist, this scholarship will alleviate financial burdens and allow me to focus on my studies, personal growth, and the development of my skills. It will give me the ability to explore new opportunities, pursue advanced education, and ultimately use my knowledge to make a difference in the lives of others. By removing financial obstacles, this scholarship will allow me to dedicate myself fully to my education and career goals, bringing me one step closer to achieving my dreams and making a lasting impact in the healthcare field. It will enable me to contribute to the well-being of others, and that, to me, is the ultimate form of success.
Frederick and Bernice Beretta Memorial Scholarship
One of my greatest passions is the field of healthcare, specifically medicine. I have always been fascinated by the way the human body works, and I am particularly drawn to dermatology. Growing up, I struggled with skin issues that affected my self-esteem, and as a result, I developed a deep empathy for people experiencing similar challenges. I realized that many individuals face not only physical discomfort but emotional and psychological burdens due to skin conditions. This fueled my desire to pursue a career in medicine, where I could make a tangible difference in people’s lives, helping them regain confidence and feel comfortable in their own skin.
What interests me most about medicine is its unique intersection of science and human connection. As a student of biology, I’ve learned about the intricacies of the body and the ways in which diseases and conditions manifest. But it’s not just about understanding the science; it’s also about the human stories behind those who seek help. Like Frederick Beretta, I am inspired by the notion of offering care and compassion, not just through medical expertise but through genuine human connection. I hope to emulate his dedication to helping others and make a positive impact in the lives of those I serve.
In addition to my passion for medicine, I am also driven by the importance of making healthcare accessible to underserved communities. Growing up as an AB 540 student, I faced significant challenges in accessing educational and professional opportunities. This experience deepened my commitment to advocating for others who face similar obstacles. As I continue to pursue my studies and career, I aim to bridge gaps in healthcare, ensuring that quality care is available to everyone, regardless of their background or financial status.
I believe that, just as Frederick and Bernice Beretta dedicated their lives to helping others, I can use my education to make a lasting impact in the lives of individuals and communities. This scholarship will enable me to pursue my educational goals and provide me with the resources I need to make a difference in the field of healthcare.
Through my passion for medicine, I am determined to honor the legacy of those who selflessly gave to others and continue their work in a way that will positively affect future generations.
Special Delivery of Dreams Scholarship
One of the biggest challenges I have faced in my life has been navigating the higher education system as an AB 540 student. Being undocumented limited my access to financial aid, scholarships, and numerous professional opportunities. While many of my peers moved forward with their education, I often felt left behind, struggling to find a path that would allow me to pursue my goals. Despite the obstacles, I remained determined to continue my education. I took on freelance work, including translation, data annotation, and proofreading, to support myself financially. Balancing work and school was not easy, but each challenge I overcame strengthened my resolve to succeed.
This scholarship would significantly alleviate the financial burden I currently face, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on the stress of affording tuition. With this support, I can continue taking courses that prepare me for a future in healthcare, a field where I hope to make a lasting impact. My goal is to pursue an MPH in epidemiology, and I believe that through this path, I can contribute to improving public health for underserved communities, especially those with limited access to medical resources.
Giving back is essential to me because I know what it feels like to lack resources and support. I plan to use my education to advocate for marginalized communities, providing healthcare, education, and mentorship to those who need it most. By addressing health disparities and promoting preventative care, I hope to make a tangible difference in the lives of others.
As for encouraging young people to pursue philately, I would emphasize the historical and cultural significance of postage stamps. Stamps are miniature reflections of a country’s history, art, and identity. Engaging with philately allows individuals to explore different parts of the world and understand diverse cultures without ever leaving their homes. I would organize workshops at local schools and community centers, introducing children to the hobby by showing them unique and rare stamps, and explaining the stories behind them. Additionally, I would leverage social media to highlight interesting collections, fostering a sense of curiosity and excitement among young people.
Philately is not only educational but also an inoffensive and healthy hobby—something many young people could benefit from in today’s fast-paced digital world. It encourages mindfulness, patience, and focus while providing a productive escape from the pressures of daily life. By immersing themselves in the stories behind stamps, young collectors can experience a sense of adventure and discovery, which can spark creativity and broaden their perspectives.
This scholarship will help me continue pursuing my dreams, ultimately allowing me to give back to the community and inspire others to follow their passions, whether through education, public health, or hobbies like philately.
Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
Greetings. I hope you are having a good day. Legacy, to me, represents the lasting impact we leave behind—whether through our actions, values, or contributions to others. It is not solely about personal achievements, but about how we influence the lives of those around us and the future generations who may benefit from the paths we forge. A legacy can take many forms, from shaping communities to changing the trajectory of a family’s future.
My upbringing has played a significant role in shaping the path I am on today. As an AB 540 student and the child of immigrant parents, I grew up witnessing firsthand the sacrifices my family made to provide me with opportunities they never had. Their resilience and perseverance, despite facing limited resources and systemic barriers, taught me the value of hard work and the importance of education. However, this experience also exposed me to the struggles that often accompany being part of an underserved community—such as restricted access to higher education, healthcare, and stable employment.
For a long time, the limitations of my legal status made me feel as if my potential was capped. Opportunities that seemed easily accessible to others were often out of reach for me. There were moments when I felt discouraged, but those same moments pushed me to work even harder, determined to break the cycle that had defined much of my family’s experience.
By pursuing higher education and striving for a career in medicine, I hope to create a new legacy—one that reflects the strength of overcoming adversity. I want to serve as a role model for younger students in my community who face similar challenges, showing them that while the path may be difficult, it is not impossible to navigate.
I believe that continuing my education and becoming a healthcare professional will allow me to give back in meaningful ways. Whether by providing medical care to underserved populations or mentoring students who, like me, need encouragement and guidance, I plan to leave behind a legacy of hope, perseverance, resilience, and positive change.
Breaking the cycle is not about discarding the past but building upon it. My goal is to honor the sacrifices of those who came before me while paving the way for future generations to pursue their dreams with fewer obstacles in their way. This, to me, is the essence of legacy—transforming struggles into stepping stones for a better future.
American Dream Scholarship
The American Dream, to me, represents the belief that with hard work, perseverance, and determination, anyone can achieve a better life, regardless of their background or circumstances. It is the promise of opportunity—the idea that no matter where you come from, you have the chance to shape your future and reach your fullest potential.
For many, the American Dream signifies economic success, owning a home, and providing a stable life for their families. But beyond material wealth, it embodies the hope of personal growth, freedom, and the ability to pursue one's passions without fear of discrimination or limitation. It is not just about individual success but also about contributing to a larger community, creating a ripple effect that uplifts others along the way.
As an AB 540 student, my definition of the American Dream is deeply personal. It reflects the resilience required to navigate a system that often feels unforgiving to those who live in the shadows of uncertainty. The American Dream, for me, means having the courage to keep going when opportunities seem scarce and doors are closed. It is about finding new paths, adapting, and believing that my hard work will eventually lead to the life I envision.
Throughout my journey, I have encountered numerous obstacles, many of which stemmed from my undocumented status. The financial strain, limited access to certain opportunities, and the uncertainty of the future were challenging to cope with at times. However, these difficulties fueled my ambition rather than diminished it. I learned to rely on my resilience, seeking out alternative ways to continue my education and personal growth.
This dream is not just about what I can achieve but what I can give back. I see the American Dream as a responsibility to uplift others, particularly those from underserved communities who may feel overlooked or marginalized. The goal is not just to succeed for personal gain but to use that success to inspire and advocate for those who come after me.
The American Dream, in my view, is about breaking cycles of hardship and creating new legacies. It is about envisioning a future where equity and inclusion are at the forefront, where my efforts contribute to the well-being of others. While the path toward the American Dream can be challenging, the beauty of this concept lies in its inclusivity.
Ultimately, the American Dream stands as a testament to the power of hope, the resilience of the human spirit, and the belief that even in the face of adversity, there are endless possibilities for growth and success.
Michael Valdivia Scholarship
Greetings, I hope you are doing wel.
Growing up as an AB 540 student presented countless obstacles that shaped both my personal and academic journey. The weight of being undocumented often felt like an invisible wall, keeping me from opportunities that many of my peers had access to. Whether it was scholarships, internships, or even basic job opportunities, my status became a constant reminder that I would have to work twice as hard to achieve my goals.
There were times when the barriers felt overwhelming, and I questioned whether continuing my education was even possible. Depression crept in during those moments of doubt, making it difficult to stay motivated. I watched as friends advanced in their lives while I felt stuck, left behind by circumstances beyond my control. There were nights when the uncertainty about my future felt unbearable, and it was tempting to let go of the dreams I held onto so tightly.
Despite the darkness, I never turned to drugs or other destructive outlets. Instead, I leaned into my faith, my family, and the small victories I achieved along the way. I found strength in the knowledge that I wasn’t alone—many others shared the same struggles, and their perseverance inspired me to keep going. Slowly, I began to find light even in the most challenging times. I embraced freelance work and developed skills in data annotation, translation, and proofreading to financially support myself through school. It wasn’t a conventional path, but it allowed me to stay connected to my education and continue pursuing my passion for healthcare.
Over time, I realized that every hurdle I faced added to the resilience and determination that now define who I am. These experiences have not only shaped me but have also fueled my desire to serve others—especially those from underserved communities who may feel as invisible as I once did. I am now committed to becoming a healthcare provider, with the goal of making quality care more accessible to people who are often overlooked.
Pursuing education isn’t just a step toward a career for me; it’s a way to honor the challenges I’ve overcome and turn them into something meaningful. This scholarship represents more than financial support—it symbolizes the belief that, despite the odds, I am capable of creating a better future. I am ready to continue following my dreams, driven by the hope of making a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Beacon of Light Scholarship
From a young age, I knew I wanted to make a meaningful difference in the world, particularly in healthcare. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the struggles that many individuals face when it comes to access to quality medical care. Whether it was the challenges that my family faced in accessing healthcare services or the struggles of friends and neighbors, I saw how critical it is for people to have not only access to care but also compassionate providers who are dedicated to their well-being. These experiences sparked my desire to pursue a career in healthcare, where I could be part of the solution to these issues.

I believe that my calling to healthcare is part of a larger purpose, and my commitment to serving others has only grown stronger in the face of adversity. I know that pursuing a career in healthcare will allow me to give back and make a positive difference in the lives of others, especially those who come from underrepresented communities.

I am passionate about becoming a healthcare provider who not only offers medical expertise but also emotional support to my patients. I have pursued a degree in biology, which has provided me with a strong foundation in the sciences and the tools to further my education in healthcare.
My goal is to become a dermatologist because I understand how critical skin health is to one’s confidence and overall mental well-being. Arthur and Elana Panos Scholarship
My faith has been an anchor throughout my life, especially during the most challenging times. As an AB540 student, the obstacles I faced seemed insurmountable at times, but it was my faith in God that kept me going, reminding me that difficulties were temporary and that perseverance would lead to something better. Growing up, my family instilled in me the belief that, no matter the circumstances, we are never truly alone. I’ve always believed that God has a purpose for each of us, and this faith has carried me through many difficult moments in my academic and personal journey.
When I first began my studies in the United States, I was confronted with the harsh reality of being an undocumented student. The financial strain, limited access to resources, and lack of support systems weighed heavily on me. I often felt uncertain about my future and whether I would ever be able to pursue my dreams of higher education and a career in healthcare. There were countless nights when I doubted whether my situation would ever improve. But during those times of uncertainty, I found solace in prayer. I prayed for strength, wisdom, and guidance, asking God to help me navigate these challenges and open doors that I could not see. And, time and time again, my faith was rewarded.
Through perseverance and a deep trust in God's plan for me, I found ways to overcome the financial and legal obstacles that stood in my way. I became resourceful, finding freelance work as a translator and proofreader, which allowed me to contribute to my education and alleviate some of the financial burdens. God’s presence in my life gave me the strength to keep moving forward, knowing that He had a plan for me even when I could not see the path ahead.
As I continue my education and pursue a career in public health, I know that my faith will continue to play a pivotal role. It reminds me that my work is not only about advancing my career but also about serving others and contributing to the well-being of those in need. I believe that God has called me to work in healthcare, particularly as an advocate for underserved populations, and my faith gives me the drive to make a meaningful difference in the world. It teaches me to remain humble, compassionate, and resilient in the face of challenges, knowing that every setback is an opportunity to grow stronger.
In the future, as I work towards my goals in public health and medicine, I will rely on my faith to guide me, keeping me focused on the bigger picture and reminding me that the work I do is not just for my own success but for the benefit of others. My faith will continue to inspire me to approach my career with integrity, empathy, and a deep commitment to serving those who are often overlooked and underserved.
Kumar Family Scholarship
As a first-generation, low-income student, I have faced significant challenges on my journey to higher education, but I have always been determined to overcome them. Growing up as an AB540 student, I was limited in many ways, both financially and in terms of access to resources. As someone without legal status, I faced hurdles in securing financial aid, and I often had to navigate the complexities of higher education on my own. However, these challenges have only strengthened my resolve to pursue my dreams and make a difference in the world.
I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Biology from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), where I gained a solid foundation in the sciences. Throughout my academic journey, I made it a priority to take challenging courses and gain as much knowledge as possible, even when financial constraints made it difficult to do so. Despite the obstacles I faced, I remained dedicated to my education and was determined to succeed. My desire to pursue a career in public health, specifically epidemiology, has only grown stronger as I’ve gained a deeper understanding of healthcare and the critical role it plays in improving communities. I am currently attending a community college to take additional courses in preparation for graduate school, where I plan to pursue a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in epidemiology.
This scholarship would be a vital resource in helping me achieve my educational goals. It would allow me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of financial stress. As an undergraduate student, I worked part-time jobs and relied on freelance opportunities as a translator, proofreader, and data annotator to make ends meet. These experiences helped me develop valuable skills in research, communication, and attention to detail, which I am confident will benefit me in my future career in public health. I’ve learned to be resourceful, adaptable, and persistent, and these qualities will serve me well as I continue my educational journey.
In addition to my academic and freelance work, I have actively sought out extracurricular activities that align with my career goals. I have volunteered in community organizations and participated in various clubs that promote health education and social advocacy. These experiences have reinforced my passion for public health and deepened my understanding of the importance of improving healthcare access for underserved populations.
By awarding me this scholarship, you would be helping me continue on my path toward earning an MPH and ultimately working to improve healthcare in underserved communities.
