Being a First-Generation College Graduate I have always believed that growth has no age limit, and that determination can break any barrier. Being a first-generation college graduate will mean more to me than earning a degree — it will be a symbol of perseverance, growth, and breaking barriers within my family. At 34 years old and a father of four, returning to school is a challenge I embrace fully. Balancing work, parenting, and academics requires discipline, patience, and determination, yet it is a journey I take with purpose. I want to show my children that it is never too late to pursue your dreams and that hard work and commitment can create opportunities, no matter where you start. Earning this degree is not only a personal milestone but also a message to my family: that learning, growth, and resilience are values worth striving for. My professional experiences have been central in shaping who I am today. Working as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), Personal Care Assistant (PCA), and Phlebotomist has taught me the value of empathy, patience, and leadership. These roles demand a careful balance of technical skill and emotional intelligence, and each day has provided opportunities to grow in both. Whether assisting clients with daily living, drawing blood, or monitoring patient health, I have learned to communicate clearly, solve problems effectively, and remain grounded under pressure. These experiences have reinforced the importance of integrity, compassion, and service, while also teaching me resilience, adaptability, and how to lead by example. Beyond the technical skills, my work has inspired me to pursue a degree in Psychology. I want to deepen my understanding of human behavior, mental health, and emotional well-being so I can serve others more effectively and advocate for those in need. This field aligns with my personal and professional mission: to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives while modeling perseverance and commitment for my children. After completing my CNA certification, I plan to earn my EKG certification, which will allow me to become a Patient Care Technician (PCT) and expand the ways I can help patients and support my community. My journey has shown me that growth is not just about academic achievement, but about becoming the kind of person who uplifts others, even in challenging circumstances. Returning to school at 34 and managing the responsibilities of fatherhood and work is not easy, and there are moments of doubt. But these challenges only strengthen my resolve. They remind me why I am pursuing this path: to break cycles, provide for my family, and demonstrate that age or circumstance should never define what is possible. Every assignment, every late night of studying, and every sacrifice I make is an investment in the future I am building for myself and my children. Being a first-generation college graduate is not simply a personal achievement — it is a legacy I am creating for my children, my family, and my community. My professional and extracurricular experiences have shaped me into a disciplined, compassionate, and resilient individual. By pursuing a degree in Psychology and advancing my career as a PCT, I hope to show that determination, lifelong learning, and hard work can open doors at any stage of life, proving that growth truly has no limits.
