WinnerBio
My name is Jonathan Gedam and I am an incoming freshman at USC’s Marshall School of Business.
As the valedictorian and 4x elected student body president, I’ve been dedicated to being an advocating spokesperson for my peers that seeks to lead by serving.
Through my internship with Word Is Bond (WIB), I made an effort to address the tension between the police and the black youth in my community by participating in weekly group meetings throughout the summer with Portland police officers. My peers and I were able to hold deep, vulnerable conversations that led us to make positive lasting relationships with one another, while also leaving our meetings with an enlightened understanding of the way each of us experiences our lives. This resulted in reduced traumatic responses at the sight or sound of police as well as better relations between our local police department and the community.
I also had the privilege of attending the WIB Spring Leadership Forum in Washington DC where I, along with my fellow interns, met with public officials like Sen. Ron Wyden, Sen. Jeff Merkley, and Mayor Muriel Bowser and had the opportunity to pitch the policy we created that seeks to update our educational system to acknowledge the substantial impact Black innovators and leaders had, and continue to have, in America.
My goal is to incorporate the qualities of a servant leader into my career and truly make a positive impact on others.
"Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:16

Anime Enthusiast Scholarship
One series that I can watch over and over again is One Piece. This anime is endlessly captivating to me for many reasons, each deeply tied to the lives of its characters and the powerful lessons they have taught me.
Nami’s story of liberation from Arlong's tyranny is a profound narrative of overcoming oppression and finding the strength to trust others. Her journey from a reluctant navigator to a beloved crewmate symbolizes the importance of relying on friends and allies. In my own life, Nami's courage reminds me that it’s okay to lean on others for support and that true strength comes from unity and trust.
Every character in One Piece brings a unique lesson to the table, but none more than Luffy. His unwavering determination to become the Pirate King, despite insurmountable odds, is a testament to the power of dreams and perseverance. Luffy's journey inspires me to pursue my own goals relentlessly, no matter how daunting they may seem. His infectious optimism and refusal to give up have taught me the value of resilience and maintaining a positive outlook, even when faced with adversity.
Pivotal moments in One Piece often revolve around the theme of sacrifice. The story of Sanji, who left his comfortable life to chase his dream of finding the All Blue, is a powerful lesson in the importance of following one's passions. Sanji’s willingness to endure hardship for his dream reminds me that true fulfillment comes from pursuing what you love, even if it means making significant sacrifices along the way.
In One Piece, every crew member's backstory is a tale of struggle and survival. Robin’s desire to uncover the true history of the world, despite being hunted for most of her life, teaches the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding the past. Her resilience in the face of constant danger encourages me to remain curious and pursue the truth, no matter the obstacles.
Each arc in One Piece is a microcosm of life’s journey, full of highs and lows. The camaraderie and loyalty of the Straw Hat crew have shown me the irreplaceable value of true friendship. Their unwavering support for one another, through thick and thin, mirrors the support system I’ve found in my own life, reminding me that with true friends by your side, any challenge can be overcome.
Characters like Zoro embody the essence of dedication and self-discipline. His quest to become the world’s greatest swordsman, driven by a promise to a fallen friend, highlights the importance of keeping one’s word and striving for excellence. Zoro’s journey inspires me to uphold my commitments and continuously work towards self-improvement, honoring the promises I’ve made to myself and others.
Empathy is a recurring theme in One Piece, especially evident in Chopper’s story. As a reindeer who dreams of becoming a great doctor, Chopper faces rejection and prejudice but remains steadfast in his compassion and desire to help others. His kindness and empathy in the face of adversity remind me of the importance of staying true to one’s values and treating others with kindness, regardless of how the world may respond. One Piece is endlessly captivating because it weaves together powerful narratives of dreams, sacrifice, friendship, and resilience. Each character's journey offers a profound life lesson that resonates deeply with me. The series is not just an adventure; it is a reflection of life’s complexities, teaching me to pursue my dreams, rely on my friends, and face challenges with unwavering determination and empathy.

John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
In today's interconnected world, the realm of digital marketing has emerged as a dynamic and influential force, shaping consumer behavior, driving business growth, and redefining traditional marketing paradigms. As I embark on my journey towards a career in this field, I am driven by a passion for uplifting others, innovation, and the transformative power of digital technologies.
From a young age, I have been fascinated by the intersection of technology and communication, captivated by the ever-evolving digital landscape and its potential to connect people, ideas, and businesses on a global scale. This fascination blossomed into a keen interest in marketing, as I recognized the pivotal role that digital platforms play in shaping societal perceptions, driving brand engagement, and facilitating meaningful interactions between businesses and their target audiences.
Moreover, my academic journey, enriched by my passion for uplifting the voices of marginalized communities, has further fueled my dedication to digital marketing. This commitment was solidified during my experience pitching a policy in Washington D.C., after I witnessed firsthand the consequences of the lack of representation in American History courses of successful black individuals, outside of sports and entertainment, on the career aspirations of black youth. This realization ignited a fire within me to use digital marketing as a tool for amplifying diverse perspectives and fostering inclusivity. Additionally, I have extended my work on campus by leveraging digital marketing as a means to bridge the informational gap faced by minority, low-income, and first-generation students when it comes to career readiness. This initiative complements my digital marketing intern roles within the USC Career Center, Black Business Student Association, East African Student Association, and Brothers Breaking B.R.E.A.D., allowing me to amplify resources and opportunities for underrepresented students through targeted digital outreach and engagement strategies. Through these experiences, I have honed my skills in market research, content creation, and social media management—essential competencies for success in the digital marketing landscape.
Looking towards the future, my ideal role in the digital marketing industry extends beyond professional success to encompass a broader vision of social impact and community empowerment. I envision myself leading initiatives that not only drive business objectives but also serve as catalysts for positive change and societal progress. In addition to executing strategic marketing campaigns and leveraging cutting-edge technologies, I am passionate about establishing a mentorship program that equips minority students with the knowledge, resources, and support needed to explore and pursue careers in business. I aspire to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment where I can leverage my creativity, strategic thinking, and technical expertise to drive innovation, solve complex challenges, and ultimately make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and the broader community.
Curtis Holloway Memorial Scholarship
My mother's unwavering support and selfless contributions have been the driving forces behind my academic success. Growing up I witnessed my mother's tenacious spirit in a home where there was emotional upheaval as well as financial turmoil. Despite the absence of my father, who relegated child-rearing responsibilities to my mother while contributing little to the family's financial well-being, she epitomized resilience, embodying the adage that necessity is the mother of invention.
Her sacrifices went beyond simple financial support; they were based on her dedication to my future and well-being. Despite being in an abusive marriage she bravely decided to stay until I became 18 because she thought that leaving sooner would negatively impact my mental and emotional well-being as a developing child. Even though it required significant personal cost, her choice demonstrated her persistent commitment to fostering my development and protecting me from the hard realities of our chaotic home.
My mother's story illustrates how the human spirit can overcome hardship. She walked across dangerous terrain to find safety in Sudan after the battles destroyed her hamlet and school, leaving her country devastated by the devastation caused by war. Her own education was cut short by events beyond her control; the turmoil caused by war prevented her from going above the third grade. Despite this, she firmly felt that education had the capacity to transcend limitations and open up countless options. If not for herself, then for her children.
Her support for my education served as the foundation for my goals and inspired me to achieve academic success and forge a better future. Inspired by her unfailing belief in my ability, I set out on a path of academic distinction that culminated to my high school valedictorian title and entrance as a University of Southern California Dean's Scholar.
In addition to her obvious accomplishments, my mother's leadership style has had a lasting influence on how I approach leadership myself. She led by example, putting the needs of others before her own and creating an atmosphere of compassion, humility, and empathy, exemplifying the values of servant leadership. Even if the world at large frequently missed her altruistic deeds of service, they acted as a beacon of inspiration and hope, lighting the way ahead with unshakable love and unwavering resolve.
In summary, the foundation of my academic career has been my mother's steadfast support, selfless love, and servant leadership, which have given it resiliency, strength, and direction. Her enduring legacy serves as a continual reminder of the transformational power of love, resilience, and unshakable faith in the face of adversity as I traverse the complexity of academia and beyond. Following in her footsteps, I move forward, led by her unflinching light, confident that her unending love and unwavering support will always shine a light on my successful journey.
Novitas Diverse Voices Scholarship
Diversity is not just a buzzword; it is the cornerstone of progress, innovation, and inclusivity in every facet of society. In the realm of public relations (PR), fostering diverse voices is not just commendable; it is imperative for shaping a more educated, accepting, and equitable communications industry and society as a whole.
My journey towards understanding the significance of diverse voices in PR began with a pivotal moment during a trip to Washington, D.C. There, I had the opportunity to pitch a policy aimed at addressing the lack of representation of people of color in diverse careers, outside of sports and entertainment, in classrooms nationwide. Witnessing firsthand how this dearth of representation affected the career aspirations and confidence of youth of color fueled my determination to advocate for change.
In the landscape of PR, diverse voices are essential for authentic storytelling and effective communication. By amplifying diverse perspectives, PR professionals can ensure that a wide range of voices and experiences are represented in the public narrative. This not only fosters inclusivity but also enhances the credibility and relatability of messaging to diverse audiences.
Moreover, the importance of diversity in PR extends beyond mere representation; it directly influences the content and strategies employed in campaigns. Diverse PR teams bring a wealth of perspectives and cultural insights to the table, enabling them to craft messages that resonate with diverse audiences on a deeper level. This is particularly crucial in today's globalized and multicultural society, where one-size-fits-all approaches no longer suffice.
Furthermore, diverse PR teams are better equipped to navigate the complexities of engaging with influencers and thought leaders from diverse backgrounds. In an era where influencer marketing is a dominant force in shaping public opinion, having a team that reflects the diversity of the target audience is paramount. The selection of influencers by PR professionals extends beyond mere reach, requiring a deep understanding of cultural nuances and audience demographics. A diverse PR team brings varied perspectives and cultural insights, enabling them to identify influencers who authentically represent and resonate with diverse audiences. Also, diversity within PR teams fosters inclusivity and creativity, leading to more innovative influencer campaigns and ensuring that diverse voices are heard throughout the creative process.
Additionally, a diverse PR team plays a pivotal role in empowering selected influencers from underrepresented backgrounds. By providing support and opportunities for diverse influencers to amplify their voices authentically, PR professionals contribute to a more inclusive media landscape where diverse voices are celebrated and empowered. In summary, diversity within PR teams is crucial for selecting diverse influencers, ensuring authentic representation, and empowering underrepresented voices to drive positive social change.
In conclusion, the power of diverse voices in public relations cannot be overstated. As we strive to create a more inclusive and equitable society, it is imperative that the PR industry reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. The Novitas Diverse Voices Scholarship serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring PR and marketing professionals from underrepresented backgrounds, empowering them to amplify their voices and contribute to shaping a more inclusive and accepting public narrative.
Jorian Kuran Harris (Shugg) Helping Heart Foundation Scholarship
Growing up in a family grappling with financial strain, I witnessed my mother's fragile state as she shouldered the overwhelming financial burden alone, while also supporting relatives back in Eritrea. My father's reluctance to contribute financially left her feeling helpless and overwhelmed, compelling me to seek scholarships and work as a golf caddy from the tender age of 14 to supplement my mother's income. Witnessing my mother endure emotional, relational, and physical strain was deeply distressing, as her distress became a burden I too carried.
Throughout high school, I faced discouragement as I observed the lack of representation for successful black leaders in my history courses outside of sports and entertainment. This absence of diverse role models tainted my career aspirations and left me feeling disheartened. Recognizing similar sentiments among my peers, I realized the detrimental impact it had on our collective ambitions.
However, my mother's unwavering resilience and belief in the transformative power of education served as a guiding light during these moments of despair. She instilled in me the hope and conviction that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Fueled by her encouragement, I dedicated myself to my studies, ultimately graduating as valedictorian of my high school and gaining acceptance as a Dean's Scholar at the University of Southern California.
Driven by my desire to address the lack of representation I witnessed, I embarked on a journey to Washington D.C., where I advocated for increased representation of influential leaders of color in history courses nationwide. This experience ignited a passion within me to extend my efforts to similar issues on my college campus, where I am actively involved in initiatives aimed at bridging the information gap for minority, low-income, and first-generation students.
I am drawn to digital marketing because I recognize its power to shape society's perceptions and amplify the voices of the marginalized. By leveraging digital platforms, I aim to uplift underrepresented voices, foster inclusivity, and drive positive change in our society.
This scholarship would make a significant difference for me as it would alleviate the financial burden of pursuing my education, allowing me to fully focus on my academic and extracurricular pursuits. Moreover, I am passionate about launching a mentorship program in the future aimed at underserved, low-income high school students, inspired by my own journey and the challenges I have overcome. This program will provide these students with guidance, workshops, and resources to navigate the complexities of the education system and pursue their academic and career aspirations. This mentorship program is not just about academic success but also about fostering personal growth, resilience, and self-belief, laying the foundation for a brighter future for these students. My ultimate goal is to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams, just as my mother inspired me.
During a particularly challenging period, I experienced emotional weakness as I struggled to balance academic responsibilities with familial obligations. Despite feeling overwhelmed, I sought solace in the support of friends and family, and through perseverance and determination, I was able to overcome the situation. This experience taught me the importance of resilience and the value of seeking support during times of vulnerability.
Ginny Biada Memorial Scholarship
The trajectory of my life has been profoundly shaped by the unwavering love, resilience, and sacrifices of my mother—a beacon of strength and inspiration who has guided me along my path through her profound impact and steadfast faith. Despite facing immense challenges and adversity, she epitomizes the power of perseverance, determination, and unwavering faith in the face of hardship.
My mother's journey began as an immigrant to the United States, fleeing the devastation of war in Eritrea with dreams of a better life. With only a third-grade education, she navigated the complexities of a foreign land, working tirelessly to support not only my siblings and me but also family members back home.
In the absence of my earthly father's support, my mother bore the sole responsibility of providing for our family, demonstrating remarkable resilience. Despite facing an abusive marriage, she found strength and guidance in her faith, leaning on our Heavenly Father for solace. Proverbs 22:6 guided her parenting, as she diligently instilled in us the fear of the Lord, believing it to be the cornerstone of wisdom. Her steadfast commitment to raising us in the Lord has equipped me with integrity, humility, and obedience in navigating life regardless of worldly pressures and influences. Consequently, her remarkable strength and resilience, forged in the crucible of adversity, have instilled in me a deep appreciation for the value of hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice. Witnessing her struggles ignited a sense of responsibility in me at a young age, leading me to secure scholarships to help cover my high school tuition and work as a golf caddy to supplement her income.
Moreover, my mother stressed the importance of education as a pathway to breaking the cycle of poverty. She fervently believed that knowledge was the key to unlocking opportunities and a means of empowering individuals to transcend their circumstances. Her emphasis on the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom has been a guiding principle in my life, motivating me to excel academically and pursue opportunities for personal and professional growth. Thus, I committed myself to my studies, ultimately graduating as valedictorian of my high school and being admitted into the University of Southern California as a Dean Scholar.
My mother's steadfast devotion to serving both the Lord and her community profoundly shapes my leadership style and commitment to service. Inspired by her example, I actively engage in initiatives to uplift and support others, locally and beyond. Recognizing the dearth of diverse role models affecting Black youth's career aspirations, I advocated for increased representation in history courses nationwide during a policy pitch in Washington, D.C. This endeavor aimed to broaden perspectives, break the cycle of limited career options, and empower future generations. On campus, I utilize my roles with the USC career center, Black Business Student Association, East African Student Association, and Brothers Breaking B.R.E.A.D. to bridge the information gap for minority, low-income, and first-generation students. I strive to emulate my mother's selfless dedication to service, guided by the belief that true leadership stems from humility, empathy, and a commitment to others. Moreover, I hope to create a mentorship program for minority, low-income students, guiding them through their academic journeys to inspire and empower future leaders to achieve their dreams.
In conclusion, my mother's profound impact on my life transcends mere words. Her unwavering love, resilience, and faith have been a guiding light on my path, shaping my values, beliefs, and aspirations. Through her sacrifices, teachings, and unwavering faith, she has instilled in me a deep sense of purpose, resilience, and determination to overcome adversity and make a positive impact in the world.

In my journey thus far, I've encountered numerous challenges that have significantly shaped who I am today. As the child of immigrants, my family faced financial hardships that often seemed insurmountable. My parents, striving to provide for my siblings and me while also supporting our family back home, bore the weight of these burdens. My mother, in particular, shouldered the majority of the financial, emotional, and physical responsibilities, as my father was somewhat estranged and unwilling to provide or care for us. Witnessing my mother's struggles at a young age ignited a sense of responsibility within me, compelling me to take action to alleviate our family's financial strain. As a result, I diligently applied for scholarships to cover my high school tuition and worked as a golf caddy to supplement my mother’s income. My mother consistently emphasized that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, instilling in me a drive to excel academically. I committed myself to my studies, ultimately graduating as valedictorian of my high school.
Now, as a Dean's scholar at the University of Southern California, I continue to face financial challenges that threaten to impede my educational journey. My mother's decision to file for legal separation, coupled with the salon where she works being put up for sale, has reignited the urgency of our financial situation. Determined to overcome these obstacles, I have taken on multiple roles to support myself financially and ensure my academic success. Currently, I am serving as the Digital Marketing Intern at the USC Career Center, Graphic Design Intern for USC's Brother's Breaking B.R.E.A.D group, Freshman Representative and Director of Marketing for USC's East African Student Association, incoming Resident Assistant, and incoming Digital Marketing Intern for USC's Black Business Student Association. Through these roles, I have begun to develop skills that will be instrumental in securing a full-time job in the future.
Looking ahead, my ultimate goal is to establish myself as a leader in the marketing industry, focusing on uplifting marginalized voices and driving positive change in society. I am passionate about leveraging digital media and marketing strategies to create impactful campaigns that resonate with and uplift diverse audiences as I have come to realize the immense power marketing holds to shape societal perceptions. Through authentic storytelling and inclusive marketing, my aim is to amplify marginalized voices, contributing to positive social change.
Moreover, I am passionate about launching a mentorship program aimed at underserved, first-generation, or low-income high school students, inspired by my own journey and the challenges I have overcome. This program will provide these students with guidance, workshops, and resources to navigate the complexities of the education system and pursue their academic and career aspirations. By sharing my experiences, offering practical advice, and providing career workshops, I hope to instill in them the confidence and determination to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. This mentorship program is not just about academic success but also about fostering personal growth, resilience, and self-belief, laying the foundation for a brighter future for these students.
In conclusion, this scholarship represents more than just financial assistance; it symbolizes the belief that every student, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams. By investing in my education, this scholarship will not only empower me to achieve my goals but also inspire others to overcome their own obstacles and strive for success. With gratitude and determination, I look forward to seizing the opportunities that this scholarship will afford me and using them to make a positive impact in my community and beyond.

Sustainable Business Scholarship
In today's rapidly evolving global landscape, the integration of sustainable practices within businesses is not merely a choice but a necessity. The imperative for sustainable business practices stems from the urgent need to mitigate environmental degradation, combat climate change, and ensure the long-term viability of our planet for future generations. By adopting eco-friendly practices, businesses can not only reduce their carbon footprint but also drive innovation, enhance competitiveness, and foster positive societal impact.
Implementing sustainable practices is crucial for mitigating environmental degradation and addressing the pressing challenges of climate change. With the rise in greenhouse gas emissions and depletion of natural resources, businesses play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of environmental sustainability. By embracing eco-friendly initiatives, businesses can significantly reduce their environmental impact, thereby contributing to the preservation of ecosystems, biodiversity, and overall planetary health.
Moreover, integrating sustainable practices into business operations is essential for maintaining long-term profitability and competitiveness in the marketplace. As consumers become increasingly environmentally conscious, there is a growing demand for products and services that are produced in an environmentally responsible manner. Businesses that prioritize sustainability not only attract environmentally aware consumers but also gain a competitive edge in the market. Furthermore, sustainable practices often lead to cost savings through energy efficiency, waste reduction, and resource optimization, thereby enhancing overall profitability and resilience in the face of evolving market dynamics.
Businesses have a moral and ethical responsibility to contribute positively to society and the planet. By embracing eco-friendly practices, businesses demonstrate their commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development goals (SDGs), thereby earning the trust and loyalty of stakeholders, including customers, employees, investors, and communities. Sustainable businesses are perceived as responsible corporate citizens that prioritize the well-being of people and the planet over short-term profits, thereby fostering a positive brand image and reputation.
In light of these considerations, it is evident that businesses must prioritize the implementation of sustainable practices to ensure their long-term viability. Three eco-friendly practices that businesses can implement to reduce their carbon footprint include:
1. Renewable Energy Sources: Transitioning to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power can significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with traditional fossil fuel-based energy generation. By investing in renewable energy infrastructure and technologies, businesses can decrease their dependence on non-renewable resources and promote the transition to a low-carbon economy.
2. Waste Reduction: Implementing waste reduction and recycling initiatives can help businesses minimize their environmental impact and conserve natural resources. By implementing strategies such as waste segregation, composting, and recycling programs, businesses can divert waste from landfills, reduce pollution, and promote the circular economy. For example, in the fashion industry, notorious for its significant environmental footprint, businesses can implement waste reduction through the adoption of sustainable practices such as slow fashion. By producing garments in small batches or on a pre-order basis, fashion companies can minimize overproduction and excess inventory, thereby reducing waste.
3. Sustainable Supply Chain Management: Adopting sustainable supply chain practices such as sourcing materials from environmentally responsible suppliers, optimizing transportation logistics, and minimizing packaging waste can help businesses reduce their carbon footprint and promote environmental sustainability throughout the value chain.
In conclusion, the adoption of sustainable practices is essential for businesses to mitigate environmental degradation, enhance competitiveness, and contribute to the well-being of society and the planet. By prioritizing sustainability and implementing eco-friendly initiatives, businesses can reduce their carbon footprint, drive innovation, and create long-term value for stakeholders. It is imperative for businesses to embrace their role as stewards of the environment and take proactive steps towards building a sustainable future for all.
Frantz Barron Scholarship
Growing up in an immigrant family, financial struggles were a constant reality. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for my siblings and me, as well as supporting our extended family back home in Eritrea. However, the burden fell largely on my mother, as my father was somewhat estranged and unwilling to contribute to our well-being. Witnessing my mother's resilience and determination in the face of adversity ignited a sense of responsibility within me at a young age.
To alleviate some of the financial strain on my mother, I took on various responsibilities, including applying for scholarships to pay for my high school tuition and working as a golf caddy to supplement our income. My mother instilled in me the belief that hard work and education were the keys to breaking the cycle of poverty. I committed myself to my studies, ultimately graduating as valedictorian of my high school. This achievement opened the doors to further opportunities, including being named a Dean's Scholar at the University of Southern California.
However, my journey has not been without its challenges. Recently, my mother made the difficult decision to file for legal separation, adding another layer of urgency to my financial responsibilities. Faced with mounting fees and the uncertainty of my mother's job security as the salon where she works is up for sale, I have taken on multiple roles to support myself and contribute to my family's well-being.
Currently, I serve as the Digital Marketing Intern at the USC Career Center, where I am honing my skills in leveraging digital platforms for professional growth. Additionally, I am the Graphic Design Intern for USC's Brothers Breaking B.R.E.A.D group, leveraging my creative abilities to promote community engagement. In my roles as the Freshman Representative and Director of Marketing for USC's East African Student Association, incoming Digital Marketing Intern for USC's Black Business Student Association and as an incoming Resident Assistant, I am dedicated to fostering inclusivity and support within the USC community. In addition to my commitments, I am relentlessly applying for scholarships to alleviate the financial strain on my mother and to create a better future for myself.
Looking ahead, my ultimate goal is to establish myself as a leader in the marketing industry, focusing on uplifting marginalized voices and driving positive change in society. I am passionate about leveraging digital media and marketing strategies to create impactful campaigns that resonate with and uplift diverse audiences.
Moreover, I am passionate about launching a mentorship program aimed at underserved, low-income high school students, inspired by my own journey and the challenges I have overcome. This program will provide these students with guidance, workshops, and resources to navigate the complexities of the education system and pursue their academic and career aspirations. By sharing my experiences, offering encouragement, and providing practical advice, I hope to instill in them the confidence and determination to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Growing up in a household led by my immigrant mother, I learned early on that success is not defined by formal education alone. My mother, who could not complete even the third grade due to the ravages of war, epitomizes resilience and determination. She taught herself the art of hairstyling as a child and went on to become a successful hairstylist, single-handedly supporting our family. Her journey instilled in me a different perspective of success—one rooted in tenacity, resourcefulness, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
Success, to me, encompasses excelling in each of my roles—not merely for personal fulfillment but as a means of effecting positive change in the world. As I strive to break the cycle of generational poverty within my family, I recognize that my achievements hold the power to uplift not only myself but also future generations. Through diligent study and hard work, I aim to secure a stable financial foundation, enabling my family to thrive and pursue their dreams.
Moreover, success extends beyond the realm of financial prosperity—it permeates the fabric of relationships and responsibilities. As a loving and caring husband, I aspire to embody the values of compassion, empathy, and mutual respect, thereby setting an example for my future children. By fostering a healthy and nurturing marital bond, I contribute to the cultivation of strong family units, which serve as the building blocks of society.
Similarly, the role of a present and engaged father holds immense significance in shaping the next generation. Through active involvement in my children's lives, I aim to impart valuable life lessons, instill a love for learning, and nurture their emotional well-being. As I witness their growth and development, I am reminded of the profound impact that positive parental influence can have on shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.
In my pursuit of success, I embrace diverse avenues for personal growth and self-education. In addition to my formal academic endeavors, I actively seek out opportunities to enhance my skills and knowledge through online certification programs like Forage, LinkedIn courses, and hands-on internships. These experiences not only broaden my horizons but also equip me with the practical skills necessary to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.
Moreover, my journey towards success is marked by my commitment to using my voice as a student to effect change and empower others. Recognizing the detrimental effect on my Black peers’ and my own career aspirations brought on by the lack of representation of successful Black innovators and leaders in American history courses, particularly outside of sports and entertainment, I embarked on a mission to address this disparity. This journey led me to Washington D.C., where I pitched a policy aimed at fostering inclusivity and diversity in educational curricula nationwide. Moreover, I have extended this mission on my college campus, taking on roles at the USC Career Center as the Digital Marketing Intern, the Black Business Student Association’s Graphic Design Intern, and the East African Student Association’s Director of Marketing to help close the informational gap that first-generation, minority, and low-income students face regarding career resources.
The opportunity presented by this scholarship holds immense value in my journey towards success. It serves as a catalyst for realizing my aspirations, providing the necessary support to pursue my educational and professional goals. With this scholarship, I will be able to further supplement my formal education, explore new avenues for personal growth, and ultimately, make meaningful contributions to my community and beyond.
In conclusion, success for me is a holistic endeavor—one that encompasses academic excellence, personal fulfillment, and the cultivation of meaningful relationships. By embracing diverse avenues for growth and self-education, I am confident in my ability to overcome challenges and achieve the pinnacle of success. With the support of this scholarship, I am poised to embark on a transformative journey towards realizing my fullest potential and making a lasting impact on the world.

Currently serving as the Digital Marketing Intern at the USC Career Center, Graphic Design Intern for USC's Brother's Breaking B.R.E.A.D group, Freshman Representative and Director of Marketing for USC's East African Student Association, incoming Resident Assistant, and incoming Digital Marketing Intern for USC's Black Business Student Association. Through these roles, I have begun to develop skills that will be instrumental in securing a full-time job in the future.
Despite these efforts, the financial burden remains heavy, and I continue to relentlessly pursue scholarship opportunities to alleviate the strain. This scholarship would not only provide much-needed financial support but also serve as a source of encouragement and validation of my hard work and determination. With this assistance, I will be able to focus more fully on my academic pursuits, delve deeper into my studies, and actively engage in extracurricular activities that align with my passions and career aspirations.
Moreover, this scholarship represents more than just financial assistance; it symbolizes the belief that every student, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams. By investing in my education, this scholarship will not only empower me to achieve my goals but also inspire others to overcome their own obstacles and strive for success. With gratitude and determination, I look forward to seizing the opportunities that this scholarship will afford me and using them to make a positive impact in my community and beyond.
John J Costonis Scholarship
As a student who has faced significant financial hardships and worked diligently to pursue my educational goals, I am deeply inspired by Mr. Costonis's dedication and determination, and I am honored to be considered for this scholarship.
Growing up in an immigrant family, financial struggles were a constant reality. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for my siblings and me, as well as supporting our extended family back home. However, the burden fell largely on my mother, as my father was somewhat estranged and unwilling to contribute to our well-being. Witnessing my mother's resilience and determination in the face of adversity ignited a sense of responsibility within me at a young age.
To alleviate some of the financial strain on my family, I took on various responsibilities, including applying for scholarships to pay for my high school tuition and working as a golf caddy to supplement our income.
This mentorship program is not just about academic success but also about fostering personal growth, resilience, and self-belief, laying the foundation for a brighter future for these students.
Thank you for considering my application for the John J. Costonis Scholarship. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and look forward to the possibility of receiving your support in pursuit of my educational and career goals.

Growing up in a single-parent household has profoundly influenced my career goals and aspirations. Raised by my mother, an immigrant who only completed the third grade and juggled raising three children while sending money back to her family in Eritrea, I learned the value of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education in breaking the cycle of poverty. Despite facing significant financial challenges, witnessing my mother's unwavering strength and her emphasis on education inspired me to persevere in pursuing my own academic and career goals.
Just this past December, as I grappled with the burden of tuition costs and contemplated dropping out of school, my mother's resilience served as a beacon of hope, urging me not to let my circumstances define my future. I was reminded of how despite our financial struggles while I was in high school, I triumphantly emerged as the valedictorian, a testament to my determination gleaned from my mother.
Inspired by my mother's resilience and refusal to let our circumstances stifle our potential, I took action to address an issue I recognized was affecting mine and my peers’ ability to envision a successful future. The cause of this was a lack of representation of successful black individuals from similar backgrounds outside the realms of sports and entertainment. My mom’s resilient example led me to pitch a policy in Washington, D.C., advocating for increased representation of influential leaders of color in history courses nationwide. This initiative aims to empower future generations by expanding their perspectives and broadening their career horizons, breaking the cycle of limited opportunities that many face due to a lack of diverse role models.
Embarking on my first year at the University of Southern California, the lessons from my upbringing are profoundly influencing my academic engagement. In my elected role as the Director of Marketing for the East African Student Association and as a Digital Marketing Intern at the USC Career Center, I am committed to bridging the informational gap that first-generation college and low-income students, like myself, often face. By leveraging digital marketing strategies and social media, I aim to provide valuable resources and guidance to students like myself, ensuring they have access to the tools they need to succeed.
Looking ahead, my goal is to integrate the invaluable qualities and lessons ingrained in me through my upbringing into a digital marketing career, with a focus on sharing insights that uplift not only my community but the global audience. Fueled by the ambition to empower my community, I've selected a path in digital marketing to craft campaigns spotlighting diverse narratives. Through authentic storytelling and inclusive marketing, my aim is to amplify marginalized voices, contributing to positive social change.
Moreover, my goal is to establish a mentorship program for high school students from similar low-income, single-parent backgrounds, providing them with the guidance and support they need to navigate their educational and career paths. By sharing my insights and experience, I hope to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.
In conclusion, my journey from a single-mother household to pursuing a business degree in digital marketing at the University of Southern California has deeply shaped my career aspirations and goals. Through the resilience and determination instilled in me by my mother, coupled with my personal experiences and initiatives, I am committed to making a positive impact on my community and society at large. With a focus on leveraging digital marketing as a tool for empowerment and social change, I am excited to continue my journey and contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable world.

Pursuing a business degree, particularly in marketing, is driven by my deep-rooted desire to enact meaningful change in my community and beyond. My journey towards a business degree stems from a combination of personal experiences, academic pursuits, and a passion for leveraging marketing as a catalyst for positive societal impact.
Marketing, for me, is not merely a career path but a strategic tool that holds the potential to challenge existing norms and contribute to social transformation. My academic journey has been marked by a keen awareness of the role marketing plays in shaping perceptions, beliefs, and societal attitudes. This realization has fueled my desire to not only understand the intricacies of marketing but also to utilize it as a force for promoting inclusivity, diversity, and social justice.
In addition to my passion for marketing, my interest in business is deeply rooted in a philosophy of servant leadership. I believe that business, at its core, is about serving others. Whether it's creating products or offering services, business owners exist to make the lives of their customers or clients easier. In line with this ethos, I aspire to provide creative solutions that not only meet business objectives but also serve the greater good. This sense of service extends beyond individual enterprises to community upliftment.
One pivotal experience that crystallized my commitment was my involvement in pitching a policy in Washington, D.C., advocating for increased representation of influential leaders of color in American history courses. Witnessing firsthand the detrimental impact of the lack of minority representation in careers outside of sports and entertainment on the confidence and career aspirations of myself and my peers ignited a passion to address this disparity. Pursuing a business degree in marketing equips me with the tools to challenge stereotypes, break barriers, and promote more diverse narratives.
To make a positive impact on my community through my education in marketing, I plan to initiate pro bono marketing consultancy services for new, minority-owned small businesses. This endeavor is driven by the recognition that vibrant local businesses are integral to the economic upliftment of my community. By offering my expertise to these businesses, I aim to contribute to their success, fostering a resilient local economy.
Additionally, I aspire to initiate a mentorship program for high school students, particularly targeting minority youth. I envision establishing a mentorship program tailored for high school students. This program will offer resources, guidance, and exposure to minority students, enabling them to envision and navigate a plethora of career possibilities. Recognizing that representation matters, my mentorship program seeks to address the informational gap that often hinders the aspirations of young minds.
Furthermore, I am dedicated to using my voice and skills to challenge societal norms and advocate for inclusivity. Through content creation, digital marketing, and community engagement, I intend to amplify underrepresented voices, share diverse narratives, and create spaces that foster dialogue and understanding.
In essence, my pursuit of a business degree in marketing is an intentional and strategic choice to wield the power of marketing for the greater good. It is an acknowledgment of the transformative potential that education in the business field holds, not only for personal growth but for creating a positive ripple effect in my community. By challenging stereotypes, supporting local businesses, and empowering the next generation through mentorship, I am dedicated to using my education as a force for positive change within my community and beyond.

In a world where aspirations can be stifled by financial constraints, I stand as a testament to the transformative power of education and the resilience required to surmount barriers and break the cycle of poverty. As a first-generation college student and child of immigrants, the path to higher education wasn't paved; instead, it demanded resilience, resourcefulness, and a relentless pursuit of my dreams.
Growing up in a low-income household with my mother as my sole provider, the prospect of college often felt like an unattainable mirage. My mother, who didn't finish the third grade, valiantly shouldered the responsibility of raising a family. The intricacies of higher education were unfamiliar territory for both of us. Navigating the complex application processes and deciphering the financial intricacies demanded resourcefulness. Yet, the desire to break the cycle of limited opportunities and chart my course fueled my determination.
Two years ago, as a high school junior, I embarked on a mission to challenge the status quo. Recognizing the discouragement and lack of vision prevalent among myself and my fellow Black peers due to the very limited career pathways presented to us, especially outside the realms of sports and entertainment, I joined the non-profit Word Is Bond. Together, we pitched a policy in Washington, D.C., advocating for increased representation of influential leaders of color in American history courses nationwide. This transformative experience not only highlighted the urgency of representation but also solidified my belief that it is a powerful catalyst for change.
Now, as a freshman at the USC Marshall School of Business, my journey is marked by a commitment to leveraging my education for the greater good. However, the financial burdens remain daunting. This scholarship, designed to support those who have overcome obstacles, aligns seamlessly with my narrative. It's not merely a monetary contribution but an affirmation that my dreams are valid, that my journey is seen and valued.
My plans for the future are deeply intertwined with my commitment to uplifting communities. Majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis on Marketing, I've discovered the potential of digital content creation and marketing to influence perceptions and inspire positive change. As the Digital Marketing intern at the USC Career Center, I've honed my skills in crafting narratives that resonate with diverse audiences.
This scholarship would be a catalyst, mitigating financial burdens and allowing me to focus on my studies, career aspirations, and extracurricular initiatives. I envision establishing a mentorship program for high school students, aiming to provide resources and guidance to minority students who come from similar backgrounds, and helping them envision career paths beyond those typically presented in mainstream media or in their low-income households. I want to merge my passion for uplifting others with my career in digital marketing, creating impactful campaigns that transcend traditional boundaries.
In conclusion, this scholarship is not just a financial aid; it's an investment in breaking generational cycles and fostering change. It represents an acknowledgment of the journey, the obstacles surmounted, and the unyielding spirit to forge ahead. With this support, I aspire not only to realize my dreams but to serve as a beacon for others navigating similar paths, proving that education is a powerful equalizer, and dreams, regardless of background, are undeniably attainable.
Yolanda and Sam Shuster Scholarship
My parents story, rooted in the trials of war and the pursuit of a better life, has instilled in me values of perseverance, gratitude, and a deep appreciation for education. My parents' narrative unfolds against the backdrop of Eritrea, a country marred by conflicts. Faced with the harsh realities of a war-torn homeland, my mother's education was abruptly halted as her village and school were bombed, rendering her homeless. In a courageous bid to escape the perils of war, she embarked on a perilous journey on foot to Sudan, seeking refuge. Meanwhile, my father, undeterred by the chaos, joined the militia, running toward the fire in an attempt to protect his community.
Their journeys led them together, they eventually ventured into a new chapter of their lives by migrating to the USA. This transition marked not only a geographical shift but a cultural one, as they adapted to a new language and foreign surroundings. However, despite the challenges they faced, their primary focus remained on providing a safer and more promising life for their children. Their sacrifices were twofold: not only did they work tirelessly to support our family, but they also sent money back to our relatives in Eritrea, stretching our already tight resources. Witnessing their relentless dedication to our family's well-being, I imbibed a profound sense of responsibility and an understanding of the sacrifices that come with providing for those you love.
Growing up in a household where day-to-day concerns took precedence over dreams and aspirations, I learned to appreciate the significance of education as a catalyst for breaking the cycle of poverty. My mother, who never progressed beyond the third grade, impressed upon me the importance of seizing the educational opportunities she was denied. As a first-generation college student, the responsibility to navigate the college application process and secure financial aid fell squarely on my shoulders. The lack of familial guidance in this complex journey illuminated the informational gaps that exist for first-gen students.
My internship at Word is Bond provided a poignant realization of the limited representation of Black excellence in mainstream media. Reflecting on my parents' journey, I recognized the power of storytelling in shaping perceptions and inspiring change. In response to this observation, I pitched a policy in Washington, D.C., aiming to update the educational system to acknowledge the substantial impact Black/minority innovators have had on the world at large. This advocacy not only showcased my commitment to change but also conveyed that, like other minority leaders and innovators, individuals with similar stories can transcend circumstances and achieve success.
My parents' story serves as a constant reminder of the transformative power of education and the indomitable spirit required to overcome adversities. Their journey has shaped my identity, instilled in me a profound sense of purpose, and fueled my determination to create positive change. As I embark on my own educational journey, I carry with me the legacy of their sacrifices, motivated to break barriers, exceed expectations, and contribute meaningfully to the world.
Dedication for Education Scholarship
Growing up as the child of immigrants, education was instilled in me as the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. My mother, who couldn't finish the third grade due to the war in our home country, has always emphasized the transformative power of education. California holds a special place in my heart, as it provided refuge for my mother when she was fleeing the war. Now, as a first-generation college student, I've navigated the challenging terrain of higher education, showcasing academic promise despite financial and informational gaps.
My journey is marked by resilience and a commitment to making a positive impact in underserved areas of California. Despite the financial constraints and lack of guidance, I have excelled academically, becoming a valedictorian and earning a place at USC as a Dean's Scholar. My academic successes, achieved in the face of adversity, reflect my determination to utilize education as a tool for societal change.
Recognizing the lack of representation of successful minorities in careers outside of music and sports, I took concrete steps to address this issue. During my internship with Word Is Bond, I pitched a policy in Washington, D.C., advocating for increased representation of successful minorities in various career paths within the American education system. This experience solidified my belief in the power of policy and education to dismantle systemic barriers.
My commitment to positive change extends beyond policy advocacy to community service. In my local community, I have actively engaged in initiatives to address immediate needs. This includes preparing warm meals and distributing them to those in need. Additionally, my work with the Portland Police was born out of a desire to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community. I recognized the prevailing distrust and sought to be a catalyst for positive change by fostering understanding and collaboration.
The Dedication for Education Scholarship aligns seamlessly with my aspirations. My plans for utilizing my education to positively impact underserved areas in California encompass a multifaceted approach. First and foremost, I intend to leverage my academic achievements and skills gained at USC to contribute to the diversification of career pathways for minorities. I aim to create mentorship programs that connect students from underserved communities with professionals in various fields, offering guidance and inspiration.
California, with its diverse communities and complex challenges, is a microcosm of the issues prevalent in the United States. My goal is to bridge the gap in representation and opportunities. I envision initiatives that not only address immediate needs but also empower individuals with the tools for long-term economic independence. By creating educational and skill-building programs tailored to the unique needs of underserved communities, I aim to foster self-sufficiency and resilience.
In conclusion, the Dedication for Education Scholarship is not just a financial support system for me; it's an affirmation of the belief that education can be a transformative force. My journey, shaped by the sacrifices of my immigrant family and a commitment to positive change, positions me as a passionate advocate for education. With this scholarship, I am poised to amplify my impact, contributing to the empowerment of minorities in California and breaking the cycle of socioeconomic adversity.

In the realm of soccer, my journey has been marked by profound highs and lows, revealing the transformative power of resilience, leadership, and the importance of kindness. The nadir of my soccer career struck at the age of eight when my growth was inexplicably stunted. Concurrently, excruciating stomach pains became my unwelcome companion, leading to a loss of appetite that further compounded the already dire situation. Throughout high school, my physical challenges persisted; I retained my baby teeth, and my underdeveloped, 8-year-old stature made me vulnerable to the physicality of the sport.
The turning point came at the age of 16 when a diligent doctor diagnosed a chronic infection in my intestines, unraveling the mystery behind my struggles. A grueling operation liberated me from the infection, but the subsequent challenge lay in the aftermath. Prescribed medication intended to facilitate weight gain and growth took a toll as my bones struggled to catch up with the sudden surge in weight, impacting my soccer performance. Hindered by the incongruity between my newfound physicality and the slower growth of my bones, I found myself relegated from the varsity team to JV, grappling with the role of being the weak link.
Yet, amid these lows emerged a triumphant high. The subsequent year, my body reached a harmonious equilibrium, allowing me to captain my school's varsity soccer team to victory in the league, district, and regional championships. This accomplishment not only signaled a personal victory over physical adversity but also marked the pinnacle of my leadership role within the team.
In my position as captain, I prioritized servant leadership, earning recognition for exemplary sportsmanship. I extended empathy beyond the field, organizing prayers for a rival team involved in a car accident, setting a precedent for compassion in the league. Despite our initial ineligibility for the finals, I ensured our team maintained high spirits, resulting in a first-place finish and earning us the Sportsmen Team of the Year award.
This journey also unveiled the silent battles many face. During my health struggles, I faced taunts from peers and adults alike. In a bid to deflect bullying, I wore a smile and played along with their jokes. However, this silence took a toll on my self-esteem and mental health. This experience underscored the importance of empathy and informed my commitment to kindness.
My valedictorian speech became a platform to amplify this revelation. I urged consideration and compassion, emphasizing the hidden struggles individuals might be enduring. The speech sought to reshape perceptions, urging people to be more considerate and kind in their interactions. It was a call to recognize that everyone faces their own battles behind the scenes.
This scholarship, honoring the legacy of Nasser Seconi, resonates deeply with my journey. Soccer has been both a crucible of adversity and a stage for transformative leadership. The financial support this scholarship offers would not only relieve the burden of education costs but also empower me to continue combining my love for soccer with a commitment to community service. It would be a testament to the resilience cultivated on the soccer field and a catalyst for future endeavors aimed at making a positive impact, just as Nasser Seconi did.
Trever David Clark Memorial Scholarship
Growing up as a first-generation African student, I witnessed the pervasive dismissal of mental health, particularly regarding the struggles men face, which intensified my own challenges. The stigma surrounding mental health in my community led to a lack of understanding and support. This issue hit close to home when my elder sister faced thoughts of suicide, and the mental health industry, as well as our African community, failed to provide the necessary support.
Confronting these challenges, I discerned a pressing need for transformative action. Embracing the principles of servant leadership, I harnessed my roles as a 4-time student body president, valedictorian, and intern to effect positive change within my community. As student body president, I initiated impactful dialogues within our school community, addressing the dismissive stance on mental health prevalent in our African context. My tenure as valedictorian allowed me to use the graduation platform to advocate for mental health awareness, challenging the stigma ingrained in our culture. In my internship role, I pitched a policy in Washington, D.C., responding to the stifled dreams of my peers caused by the absence of representation, particularly the dearth of successful Black leaders in various career paths beyond the limited scope of musicians and athletes. Subsequently, I worked diligently on organizing community dialogues with the Portland Police Bureau to foster understanding and bridge gaps between law enforcement and the community- specifically addressing the fear young Black men harbor toward the police, aiming to create a more empathetic and inclusive environment. In essence, these roles were not merely titles; they served as platforms for tangible change. I intentionally utilized each position to uplift and amplify silenced voices, placing a spotlight on the interconnected issues of mental health, educational equity, and community relations in my advocacy efforts.
My sister's struggles were a turning point. Witnessing the inadequacies of the mental health industry and cultural barriers that hindered her from seeking help motivated me to take action. I became a vocal advocate for mental health awareness, challenging the stigma ingrained in our culture. I used my experiences to bridge the gap between the dismissive attitudes in my community and the transformative power of mental health support.
Despite the negative experiences my sister faced, I believe in the potential for positive change. My career goals have evolved to merge my passion for storytelling and digital media with mental health advocacy. I envision creating content that not only informs but also sparks meaningful conversations about mental health within African communities.
My commitment to this cause goes beyond personal experience. I aim to challenge the narrative around mental health by sharing stories of resilience and recovery, emphasizing that seeking help is a sign of strength. By leveraging my roles in leadership and academia, I aspire to break down the barriers that prevent open conversations about mental health, especially among first-generation students and within immigrant communities.
This scholarship would be instrumental in advancing my mission. It would empower me to pursue further education and training in mental health advocacy, equipping me with the knowledge and skills needed to effect systemic change. The financial support would not only alleviate the burden of educational expenses but also enable me to devote more time and energy to my advocacy work.
In conclusion, my journey as a first-generation African student, coupled with the struggles faced by my sister, has instilled in me a deep sense of purpose. I am committed to transforming negative experiences into catalysts for positive change, using my voice and leadership roles to reshape the narrative around mental health and foster a more compassionate, understanding, and supportive community.
Healing Self and Community Scholarship
As a first-generation student and a son of African immigrants, I've witnessed the pervasive dismissal of mental health, particularly among men in my community. This silence perpetuates the challenges that disproportionately affect youth of color, exacerbated by financial barriers and the stigma surrounding mental health.
My unique contribution to making mental health care more affordable and accessible lies in harnessing the power of digital media and storytelling. I plan to create short-form videos disseminated on global social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. These videos aim not only to inform but also to entertain, breaking down cultural barriers that hinder conversations around mental health. By utilizing free, accessible platforms, my content will transcend economic constraints, reaching diverse audiences.
Additionally, these videos will encourage viewers to fellowship with others and discover that they are not alone in their struggles. The account's community board, comment section, and other interactive features will serve as spaces for support, fostering a sense of community where individuals can share, encourage, and uplift one another.
Through these initiatives, I aspire to destigmatize mental health within BIPOC communities, creating an inclusive and supportive online environment that complements real-world efforts. This scholarship would empower me to amplify this mission, facilitating positive change in attitudes toward mental health and promoting a more inclusive and accessible landscape for all.
Ahmadi Family Scholarship
In the tapestry of my journey, woven with threads of resilience, determination, and hope, the challenges I've faced to reach this point have forged my character. As the child of immigrant parents from war-torn Eritrea, my family's journey to the United States became both a testament to endurance and a source of financial struggle. My mother, escaping her village and school bombed during the war, could only complete her education up to the third grade. In the U.S., our financial constraints were pronounced, with my parents striving to support both us and our relatives back in Eritrea.
Being a first-generation student in America comes with unique obstacles. Navigating the labyrinth of college applications and financial aid was daunting, lacking the guidance of familial experience. My parents, who hadn't completed elementary education, could only afford to send my eldest sibling to school. Determined not to let financial limitations shackle my ambitions, I navigated the intricate landscape of scholarships and part-time work, independently funding my education.
The stark reality of our underrepresented narratives inspired me to make a difference after witnessing its effects on myself and my peers. During an impactful internship with Word Is Bond, I pitched a policy in Washington, D.C., aiming to bring Black success stories in various career paths into the limelight within American classrooms to help inspire the next generation. This experience deepened my commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty through equitable education.
My academic successes, such as being my high school's valedictorian and 4x elected student body president, culminated in admission to USC as a Dean's Scholar—a testament to my resilience learned from witnessing my immigrant parents' sacrifices. Yet, the financial burden remains substantial. This scholarship is not just financial aid; it is a beacon illuminating the path forward. It represents more than dollars; it signifies validation, an acknowledgment that my journey is seen and valued.
If honored with this scholarship, it would serve as a catalyst, propelling me toward a future where I can amplify underrepresented voices. Beyond the classroom, I envision myself in a career that fuses digital marketing and storytelling to bring forth narratives of triumph against adversity. This scholarship would not only alleviate financial strain but empower me to pursue this trajectory, contributing to a broader narrative of success stemming from struggle.
Moreover, as a child of immigrants who overcame formidable odds, I understand the transformative power of education. I carry this awareness as a responsibility, and through servant leadership, I aspire to be an agent of change for my community. This scholarship, therefore, is not just an investment in my education; it's an investment in a cycle of empowerment that transcends generations.
In essence, I stand at the intersection of my past, the struggles of my present, and the aspirations of my future. This scholarship is not merely financial assistance; it is a pivotal force that can elevate not just my life but those of others tethered to my journey. I am not just seeking aid; I am pursuing an opportunity to continue breaking barriers and inspiring others, proving that dreams are not confined by circumstance.
Windward Spirit Scholarship
As a proud member of Generation Z, I find resonance in the echoes of history, specifically the parallels drawn between my generation and the renowned "Greatest Generation." The call to destiny, encapsulated by President Roosevelt, is not lost on us. Today, as we stand at the intersection of economic challenges, environmental crises, and societal transformation, the comparison feels both daunting and inspiring.
Our world, much like that of the Greatest Generation, is in turmoil. Economic hardships, student loan burdens, and a healthcare system skewed against the youth characterize our shared struggle. However, the defining attribute of my generation lies in our resilience and our positive mindset, a force that propels us forward even in the face of adversity.
The sentiment of "You’re the generation that created this mess, now you’re going to tell us how we should fix it?" is not met with resentment but rather with a determination to shape a brighter future. We, the Millennials and Gen Z, inherit not just the problems but also the solutions. This awareness has driven many of us to actively engage in reshaping our communities.
In my personal journey, I have responded to this call of duty by becoming deeply involved in community service, particularly in initiatives with the Portland Police. In recognizing the divide between law enforcement and the community, I initiated and hosted community dialogues, fostering understanding and unity. It was a small step, but it echoed the sense of duty the Ode speaks of—a commitment to heal societal wounds.
Furthermore, my participation in a transformative policy-pitching trip to Washington, D.C., was motivated by a keen awareness of the systemic issues affecting education and representation. Witnessing the underrepresentation of certain narratives in history courses, I championed for change, advocating for increased visibility of Black excellence in American classrooms. This endeavor was not merely a response to a problem but a proactive step in shaping a more inclusive and equitable future.
The Ode poignantly raises concerns about our economic future, a burden we willingly shoulder. Many of us navigate through financial struggles and disparities in the educational system. As a first-generation college student, my path has been challenging, yet I persist in funding my education independently. This isn't just a personal accomplishment; it symbolizes a shared determination within Gen Z to break cycles of adversity.
The optimism embedded in Gen Z, often attributed to our inclination towards positive thinking, is our secret weapon. We aren't blind to the challenges; rather, we choose to approach them with a mindset that believes in positive outcomes. This mindset, prevalent within our generation, might just be the catalyst for the change we wish to see.
In the face of societal and environmental challenges, our generation doesn't merely accept the call of duty; we embrace it. We don't see these challenges as insurmountable obstacles but as opportunities to contribute meaningfully to our shared destiny. From initiatives in local communities to policy advocacy on a national stage, we are actively working to be "The Greatest Generation 2.0."
In conclusion, the Ode to Millennials-Gen Z captures the essence of our shared destiny. The challenges we face are met with an unwavering determination to forge a path toward positive change. As we inherit a world at the brink of transformation, we, the Millennials and Gen Z, stand united in our commitment to becoming the architects of a future defined by resilience, empathy, and a collective spirit—a destiny we approach not with fear but with hope, driven by the belief that positive actions will yield positive results.

My journey of service and community involvement has been profoundly shaped by my involvement in my home church and my relationship with Jesus Christ. While my family introduced me to Christianity, it wasn't until I attended a church camp in middle school that I truly encountered the Holy Spirit. This encounter marked a turning point in my life. It made me realize that religion is necessary, but a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is vital. From that moment on, Jesus became the inspiration for my servant leadership in all aspects of life.
In my home church, I discovered the power of service and community engagement. Through youth groups, church camps, and volunteering, I learned that the greatest expression of faith is through selfless service. I watched as the congregation banded together to support local families in need, the homeless in our community, and various charitable causes. This commitment to helping those less fortunate left an indelible impression on me. Church became more than a place of worship; it became a community that nurtured my faith, values, and passion for service. This foundation of faith has been a driving force in my journey, spurring me to not only excel academically but also to use my knowledge and leadership skills to effect positive change in my community.
As I ventured into high school, my faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone upon which I built my life. I carried this faith with me as I embarked on a journey of academic excellence, culminating in becoming my high school's valedictorian. However, it wasn't enough for me to simply succeed academically; my faith impelled me to put my knowledge and skills to practical use in service to my community.
One of the most significant expressions of my commitment to service was my involvement with the Portland Police where I organized community dialogues that sought to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the communities they served. In these dialogues, I witnessed firsthand the power of dialogue and understanding in healing divisions and fostering cooperation. My faith in the potential for positive change guided me in this work, and I felt it was my duty to build bridges and create a safer, more harmonious community.
Another pivotal moment in my journey was the opportunity to pitch a policy in Washington, D.C that sought to increase the representation of Black excellence in various career paths within American classrooms. I recognized how the lack of such representation directly affected students like me and limited their aspirations. My work there was a testament to my commitment to making a tangible difference and to my belief in the power of representation.
Through my involvement in my church and faith community, I've come to understand that service isn't limited to a specific location or activity but extends to every facet of life. It means not only working within the walls of the church, but living out these values daily, in schools, workplaces, and communities.
In conclusion, my involvement in church and my faith in Jesus Christ has been the foundational sources of my commitment to service. This dedication has manifested in my academic achievements, community engagement with the Portland Police, and my policy work in Washington, D.C. These experiences, guided by faith and values, have shown me the profound impact that service can have on individuals and communities. I remain committed to my mission to create positive change, uplift those in need, and inspire others to follow the path of servant leadership, bearing witness to the transformative power of faith and service.
Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
My volunteer experiences have been instrumental in shaping my core values and guiding the trajectory of my career and life goals. At the heart of these values is my unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, which inspires my dedication to servant leadership and community service.
My commitment to servant leadership, deeply rooted in my faith, has profoundly impacted my values. Jesus Christ, through his teachings and actions, exemplifies the essence of servant leadership. He taught us to serve others, to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to care for the marginalized. This has become a guiding principle in my life, inspiring me to engage in volunteer service and actively seek opportunities to make a positive impact on my community.
This foundation has led me to not only actively participate in various community service initiatives but also to take the initiative to advocate for change through policy-making in Washington, D.C. and to work closely with my local community, including the Portland Police. My experience working with the Portland Police was eye-opening. I recognized that there was a significant divide between the community and law enforcement. Witnessing the pain and distrust that many community members felt, I decided to become an advocate for change. My service with the police became more than just community service; it transformed into a mission to bridge the gap, foster understanding, and promote constructive dialogue. These experiences have molded my core values of empathy, inclusivity, and reconciliation.
Furthermore, my policy pitch in Washington, D.C. emerged from my dedication to servant leadership. I observed a void in the representation of Black excellence in various career paths within American education. My background as a child of immigrants and a low-income, first-generation student made me acutely aware of the absence of stories that would inspire students like me to dream beyond their circumstances. This realization motivated me to take proactive steps to create change. In Washington, D.C., I had the opportunity to pitch a policy aimed at increasing the representation of Black excellence in American classrooms. My faith-inspired servant leadership empowered me to advocate for this change on a broader scale, working to uplift future generations by expanding the horizons of educational opportunities.
My volunteer experiences have not only influenced my core values but have also directly impacted my career and life goals. I am deeply committed to a career in digital marketing, a path that aligns with my passion for storytelling and sharing underrepresented narratives. I firmly believe that stories have the power to create empathy, spark change, and inspire others. My involvement in community service has enriched my understanding of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, reinforcing the importance of representing marginalized voices in the media and marketing industries. I aspire to continue bridging gaps within my community, fostering dialogue and understanding, and creating opportunities for others. As a servant leader, I am dedicated to advocating for equity and inclusivity in all areas of my life, from my professional career in digital marketing to my personal relationships and community engagement.
In conclusion, my volunteer experiences, guided by my faith in Jesus Christ and my commitment to servant leadership, have not only influenced my core values but have also been the driving force behind my career and life goals. They have empowered me to be a catalyst for change, a bridge builder in my community, and an advocate for the underrepresented. My journey as a servant leader is not just a pursuit of personal success but a calling to uplift, empower, and inspire those around me, echoing the teachings of Jesus to love and serve one another.
Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Maintaining mental health is a crucial aspect of well-being, and it takes on even greater significance for me due to the unique set of stressors that I have encountered in my life. As a low-income, first-generation student, and the child of immigrants, my journey has been marked by numerous challenges. These challenges have shaped my perspective on the importance of mental health and have inspired me to take proactive steps to maintain my mental wellness.
Growing up in a low-income household, my family faced financial constraints that often cast a shadow over our future. The constant concern about making ends meet created a pervasive survival mindset. This mindset, while practical for addressing immediate needs, can inadvertently erode mental health as it fosters anxiety and uncertainty about the future. In my experience, the need for financial stability often overshadowed other important aspects of life, contributing to a sense of pressure and stress.
Navigating the complex and often convoluted path of higher education as a first-generation student presented its own set of challenges. The college application process, scholarship searches, and adjusting to academic demands all brought their unique stressors. My parents, despite their unwavering support, had limited knowledge of the intricacies of college admissions, which left me with the responsibility of learning and making important decisions independently.
Through all these trials, my faith in Jesus Christ emerged as a profound source of comfort and strength. The knowledge that I am not alone in my journey, and that God is continually guiding me, has provided a sense of assurance that has been invaluable. My relationship with Jesus Christ, nurtured through prayer and spiritual guidance, serves as a steadfast source of solace, helping me find peace and purpose amid life's challenges.
Additionally, I've recognized that one of the most effective ways to maintain my mental wellness is by uplifting others. Engaging in community service, spearheading initiatives to bridge divides, and sharing my experiences with fellow community members have become not just acts of kindness but also powerful forms of self-therapy. My faith-inspired journey has illuminated that helping others brings profound joy and fulfillment, often acting as a remedy for my own concerns.
In particular, my work with the Portland Police and my policy pitch in Washington, D.C., have played pivotal roles in my commitment to preserving mental wellness while contributing to my community. I witnessed firsthand the divides that persist in our society, and the impact of these disparities on individuals' mental health. These experiences deepened my resolve to be a catalyst for change, encouraging inclusivity and understanding within my community. Engaging in community dialogues, organizing events to foster collaboration, and collaborating with local authorities to promote positive change has been instrumental in advancing my mental wellness. Through these efforts, I've discovered a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose that extends beyond my personal circumstances.
In essence, my mental health is important to me because I understand the toll that stress, anxiety, and pressure can take on my overall well-being. My unique background has taught me that to be a truly effective advocate for change and to continue uplifting others, I must first care for my own mental wellness. It's akin to the safety instructions on an airplane: secure your own oxygen mask before helping others. By maintaining my own mental health, I am better equipped to inspire change, lend a helping hand, and make a positive impact on my community and beyond.

Selflessness, to me, is a cornerstone of a life well-lived. It's the ability to extend a helping hand when needed, to support others, and to give without expecting anything in return. Through my experiences, both in Washington, D.C. and in my local community, I have sought to embody selflessness and make a positive impact.
My commitment to selflessness extended beyond the confines of my local community, finding its expression in the heart of our nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Initially inspired by my personal experience of underrepresentation, I recognized that the profound impact of this issue extended far beyond myself, affecting my peers and the broader community. Witnessing the struggles of my fellow students, who were grappling with a lack of diverse representation in our education, served as a catalyst for action. I channeled my energy into pitching a policy in the halls of power, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the significant contributions of Black innovators and leaders throughout history. I argued that the underrepresentation of Black excellence in history courses adversely affects the aspirations and self-esteem of Black students. My selfless work in Washington, D.C. was a reflection of my unwavering commitment to making a difference, not just for myself, but for the collective benefit of the broader student community.
Furthermore, in my community, I had the privilege of working alongside the Portland Police Bureau to foster constructive dialogues and build trust between law enforcement and the residents they served. Hosting these community dialogues was an opportunity to facilitate open and honest conversations, allowing community members to express their concerns and enabling officers to share their perspectives. The aim was to bridge gaps in understanding, promote empathy, and ultimately create safer neighborhoods. This resulted in reduced traumatic responses at the sight or sound of police as well as better relations between our local police department and the community.
Moreover, during my tenure as the 4-times elected student body president, my commitment to selflessness was at the forefront of my responsibilities. I diligently served as a vocal advocate for the needs and concerns of my peers, ensuring that their voices were heard and their interests were prioritized. I dedicated my efforts to creating a supportive and inclusive environment, where every student felt valued and represented. My work was driven by a deep-seated desire to foster an environment where every individual felt empowered and supported, laying the foundation for a more unified and thriving school community.
Beyond these examples, I've also been dedicated to spreading the Gospel on my university campus. Many young people, while they might be familiar with Jesus from a religious perspective, often lack a deeper understanding of a personal relationship with Him. I've made it my mission to bridge that gap by sharing the message of love, hope, and redemption. This selfless act stems from my own faith and the profound impact that a relationship with Jesus has had on my life. I believe that sharing the message of the Gospel can be a source of comfort and inspiration to others, and this motivates me to approach this mission with a selfless heart.
In conclusion, embodying selflessness is an integral part of who I am. Whether advocating for representation in education, fostering community dialogue, serving as a student leader, or sharing my faith, I strive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me. These examples highlight my commitment to selflessness and the belief that, through acts of service, we can create a more compassionate and equitable world for all.
Jillian Ellis Pathway Scholarship
In my pursuit of higher education, I've encountered a multitude of obstacles that have shaped my journey and deepened my commitment to give back to my community.
My parents' immigration story, escaping the war-torn country of Eritrea, presented the initial hurdle. My mother's education was stunted at the third grade due to the harsh realities of war, including her village and school being bombed. Her journey to escape to Sudan was perilous, to say the least, where she later met my father. Their migration to the U.S. marked a new beginning, but one fraught with financial struggles.
These financial constraints influenced my upbringing, instilling in me a survival mindset where day-to-day concerns took precedence over dreams and aspirations. My parents supported our family and sent remittances to relatives in Eritrea, stretching our already tight resources. Thus, they could only afford to send my eldest sibling to school, leaving me to navigate the challenging path of scholarships and part-time work to fund my education.
The lack of role models who had transcended similar circumstances restricted my ability to envision a future beyond the confines of my household. The scarcity of resources, both financial and informational, created a barrier that limited my capacity to explore different paths and cultivate ambitious aspirations.
Despite these obstacles, I found the determination to break through these limitations. Notably my role as my high school’s valedictorian and 4x elected student body president, being admitted as a Dean’s Scholar at the University of Southern California, and my transformative internship with Word Is Bond. During this internship, I pitched a policy in Washington, D.C. aiming to increase the representation of Black excellence in various career paths within American classrooms. I argued that the lack of representation adversely affected Black students' aspirations and self-confidence after noticing its effect on me and my peers. The overwhelming support from the esteemed Open Society Foundation and Oregon senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley served as a powerful validation of my efforts, reaffirming my unwavering belief in the potential for transformative, positive change.
Moreover, I've hosted community dialogues with the Portland Police Bureau in my city to address tensions between law enforcement and black youth. These dialogues provided a platform for open discussions about the issues that concern my community and the police force, focusing on building trust, understanding, and mutual respect. This resulted in reduced traumatic responses at the sight or sound of police as well as better relations between our local police department and the community.
Furthermore, my faith in Jesus Christ has motivated me to lead through serving. I aspire to use my experiences and education to uplift my community and address the issues that affect it. This commitment to servant leadership and advocacy is reflected in my career goals. I am determined to leverage my passion for digital marketing and storytelling to amplify underrepresented voices and share the stories of individuals who, like me, overcame adversity to achieve success.
In the future, I intend to establish a career that will allow me to create positive change, inspire the next generation, and promote equitable opportunities. My education, combined with my unwavering faith and life experiences, will serve as powerful tools to uplift and empower my community. I am committed to being a beacon of hope for those who face circumstances similar to those I am working towards overcoming, and my journey is a testament to the possibilities that emerge when one is determined to break the cycle of adversity. Through education and advocacy, I aim to give back, bringing opportunities and inspiration to my community and beyond.

As a first-generation student, my educational journey has been deeply influenced by my parents' immigration story, financial struggles, and the transformative power of representation. This experience has profoundly shaped my beliefs about life and the possibilities it holds.
My parents' immigration journey was a courageous step towards a better life. Fleeing a war-torn Eritrea for the United States, they sought refuge and hope for a brighter future. This initial journey posed numerous challenges. My mother's education was stunted at the third grade due to the harsh realities of war, including the bombing of her village and school. The perilous path to Sudan, where she later met my father, was a testament to her strength and resilience. Their migration to the U.S. marked a fresh start, yet it was marked by financial constraints.
These financial limitations had a profound impact on my upbringing. In a household where resources were scarce, our daily concerns took precedence over dreams and aspirations. My parents, both of whom had not completed elementary education, supported our family while also sending remittances to relatives in Eritrea. This stretched our already tight finances, leaving them with limited means to invest in our education.
These financial constraints not only posed a barrier to my education but also deepened my sense of responsibility. In the absence of sufficient financial support from my parents, I took it upon myself to fund my educational pursuits. This period of my life marked my transformation from a teenager into a self-sufficient young adult, as I worked part-time jobs and sought out scholarships to achieve my academic goals. It was a first-hand lesson in resourcefulness and resilience.
Being a first-generation student also meant that I had to navigate the complex college application process largely on my own. Without the guidance and familiarity that many of my peers had, I often found myself struggling to traverse the complexities of financial aid, scholarships, and college and career planning. However, it was this very challenge that strengthened my determination to achieve my academic aspirations.
One of the most significant challenges I faced as a first-generation student was the lack of representation. I rarely saw individuals who shared my background and had transcended similar obstacles to become successful. This scarcity of role models to guide and inspire me limited my aspirations and my perception of what was possible as a potential career path. It underscored the importance of representation, igniting my determination to become a role model myself.
My internship experience with Word Is Bond was a turning point. It allowed me to recognize the transformative power of representation and the importance of amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities. During my internship, I traveled to Washington, D.C. and pitched a policy before U.S. senators that aimed to increase the representation of Black innovators and leaders throughout history in classrooms nationwide. I argued that the underrepresentation of Black excellence presented in academia adversely affected the aspirations and self-esteem of Black students, just as I have witnessed in myself as well as my peers. The overwhelming support from esteemed organizations like the Open Society Foundation and public officials like Oregon senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley served as a powerful validation of my efforts, reaffirming my unwavering belief in the potential for transformative, positive change.
Academically, my journey was marked by accomplishments that transcended financial limitations and were grounded in the values instilled in me by my immigrant parents. Their unwavering determination and the sacrifices they made on our behalf kindled a fire within me to strive for excellence. This led to numerous academic achievements, including my recognition as my high school's valedictorian and 4x elected student body president.
The pinnacle of my academic journey was my admission to the University of Southern California as a Dean's Scholar, an honor given to the top 2% of the applicant pool. This achievement was a testament to my resilience, solidifying my belief in the transformative power of education. It was a journey that I had undertaken with determination, drawing strength from my parents and their unwavering pursuit of a better future.
In conclusion, my journey as a first-generation student has shown me the immense value of education and the power of representation. My parents' immigration story, our financial struggles, and the scarcity of role models have shaped my perspective on life. They have inspired me to advocate for equitable educational opportunities and to amplify the voices of those who have overcome adversity. These experiences have instilled in me a deep belief in the potential for transformative change through education and advocacy. I am committed to inspiring others and making a positive impact on my community and the world.
Walking In Authority International Ministry Scholarship
I am deeply inspired to get involved in my community by my strong faith in Jesus Christ, which teaches us that God’s children have been granted dominion on Earth. To me, this means that it's our divine responsibility to walk out our God-given authority by helping and uplifting our communities, a sign of good stewardship and obedience to the Lord.
My journey towards community involvement began when I became acutely aware of the struggles and pains faced by my community. This awareness ignited a passion within me to be a present help and an agent of positive change for my community.
One significant path through which I've worked to influence change in my community was my internship with Word Is Bond, which included a transformative trip to Washington, D.C. During this internship, I recognized a critical issue affecting myself and my community, particularly the younger generation. The American education system was failing to acknowledge the significant contributions of Black innovators and leaders throughout history, leading to a lack of representation and limited knowledge among Black students. This absence of representation was affecting their aspirations, self-esteem, and their ability to envision themselves pursuing diverse career pathways. Motivated by this issue, I took it upon myself to pitch a policy in Washington, D.C. aimed at updating the American education system. The policy sought to increase the representation of Black excellence in various career paths within classrooms across the nation. This was not just an effort to improve the education system but also to inspire young minds in my community and beyond to dream beyond their circumstances, just as I had been inspired.
Beyond this, I've hosted community dialogues with the Portland Police Bureau in my city. These dialogues provided a platform for open discussions about the issues that concern my community and the police force, focusing on building trust, understanding, and mutual respect. This resulted in reduced traumatic responses at the sight or sound of police as well as better relations between our local police department and the community.
Furthermore, my commitment to community change has extended to my faith. I've observed that many young people have limited exposure to Jesus Christ, primarily through a religious lens, missing the profound significance of a personal relationship with Him. Recognizing this gap, I felt called to evangelize and spread the Gospel on my college campus. My proudest contribution to my community has been introducing individuals to the transformative power of a relationship with Jesus. It's my belief that faith can be a source of strength and a wellspring of inspiration that transcends religious rituals. Through my evangelism, I aim to help individuals establish a personal connection with Jesus, offering them a deeper and more personal perspective of the Lord's love and teachings.
In conclusion, my inspiration to get involved in my community is a fusion of my faith in Jesus Christ, an acute awareness of my community's struggles, and a deep-seated belief in our God-given dominion and authority on Earth. This alignment fuels my commitment to servant leadership, which I've exercised through policy advocacy, community dialogues, and campus evangelism. These experiences have shown me the immense impact that can be achieved when faith, awareness, and servant leadership converge. I'm excited to continue this journey, playing my part in influencing positive change in the lives of those I serve.

WinnerMy family's journey has had a profound influence on my beliefs about the world and my career aspirations. Their resilience in the face of adversity has instilled in me a deep sense of determination and purpose.
My parents emigrated from war-torn Eritrea, a country in East Africa that fought a long and brutal war for independence from Ethiopia. My mother's village and school were ravaged by bombs, limiting her education to the third grade. Seeking refuge in Sudan, she embarked on a perilous journey on foot, where she met my father. Their story of survival and determination eventually led them to the United States, where they started anew in a foreign land.
The hardships my parents endured as immigrants profoundly influenced my upbringing. The weight of financial constraints instilled in me a survival mindset from an early age. I witnessed their tireless efforts to support our family while sending money back to relatives in Eritrea, stretching our already tight resources. In a household where day-to-day concerns often took precedence over dreams and aspirations, the pursuit of higher education was a luxury that my parents couldn't afford. Nonetheless, they understood the transformative power of education in breaking the cycle of poverty and were determined to provide their children with opportunities they never had.
My family's journey also taught me about the resilience of the human spirit. Eritrea, a small country with limited resources, successfully gained independence against overwhelming odds. This spirit of resilience and the belief that change is possible even in the face of adversity have deeply influenced my worldview. It has shaped my belief that individuals can make a difference, no matter how challenging the circumstances.
These lessons from my family have guided my career aspirations. I am passionate about using my education and skills to create positive change in the world. Specifically, I am drawn to the field of digital marketing and storytelling. My experiences have shown me the power of narratives in shaping perceptions and driving change.
I aspire to use digital marketing as a tool for advocacy and empowerment. I want to tell stories that highlight the resilience of marginalized communities, much like my own family's story. I believe that by sharing these narratives, we can inspire others, challenge stereotypes, and bring about social change.
My journey towards academic success has been marked by achievements such as being elected as my school's valedictorian. This honor has allowed me to excel academically while also becoming a leader in various extracurricular activities. For example, as an intern with Word Is Bond, I had the opportunity to pitch a policy in Washington, D.C., aimed at updating the American education system to acknowledge the significant contributions of Black innovators and leaders throughout history. I argued that the underrepresentation of Black excellence in history courses adversely affects the aspirations and self-esteem of Black students. The overwhelming support from the esteemed Open Society Foundation and Oregon senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley served as a powerful validation of my efforts, reaffirming my unwavering belief in the potential for transformative, positive change.
In conclusion, my family's journey has profoundly shaped my beliefs about the world and my career aspirations. Their resilience, sacrifice, and belief in the power of education have instilled in me a deep sense of purpose. I am committed to using my education and skills in digital marketing and storytelling to advocate for positive change and amplify the voices of marginalized communities. My family's story is a testament to the human spirit's resilience, and it is a driving force behind my desire to make a meaningful impact in the world.

In my journey, I have embraced leadership with a profound sense of responsibility and a commitment to serving others. What makes me a leader can be attributed to my experiences, values, and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.
One of the pivotal moments that molded my leadership journey was my internship with Word Is Bond. During this experience, I had the privilege of collaborating with the Portland Police Bureau to create initiatives that fostered positive relationships between the police and marginalized communities. The goal was to bridge the gap and build trust, reducing tensions and promoting understanding. In this role, I not only learned the importance of effective communication and collaboration but also discovered the transformative power of leadership in promoting social change. The experience deepened my understanding of the complexities of community relations and ignited a passion for leadership that serves as a catalyst for change.
My internship journey continued as I traveled to Washington, D.C., where I had the honor of pitching a policy aimed at updating the American education system. This policy sought to acknowledge the significant contributions of Black innovators and leaders throughout history, addressing the underrepresentation of their achievements in history courses. My leadership during this experience lay in my ability to articulate the urgency of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of Black leaders, both past and present. I firmly believed that representation in education was critical to inspiring future generations and fostering a more inclusive society.
Beyond my internship, my leadership journey extends to my roles as a student body president, soccer and basketball team captain, and valedictorian. These positions have provided me with opportunities to lead by example, whether it's promoting sportsmanship on the field, advocating for students' needs, or setting a high academic standard for my peers.
In these roles, I've learned that leadership is not about dictating orders but about listening, empathizing, and working collaboratively to achieve common goals. It's about leading with purpose, passion, and a commitment to serving others. As I continue my leadership journey, I am determined to be a leader who inspires change, fosters unity, and leaves a lasting impact on the lives of those I serve.
Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship
My family's journey has had a profound influence on my beliefs about the world and my career aspirations.
This reality fueled my determination to break the cycle of poverty through education. It was a journey that required me to strive relentlessly for scholarships and work diligently to fund my studies independently. The absence of role models who had transcended similar circumstances made it difficult to envision a future beyond the confines of my household. The scarcity of resources, both financial and informational, created a barrier that limited my ability to explore different paths and cultivate ambitious aspirations.
My journey towards academic success has been marked by achievements such as being elected as my school's valedictorian and student body president. Moreover, as an intern with Word Is Bond, I had the privilege of pitching a policy in Washington, D.C., aimed at updating the American education system to acknowledge the significant contributions of Black innovators and leaders throughout history. I argued that the underrepresentation of Black excellence in history courses adversely affects Black students' aspirations, self-esteem, and ability to envision themselves pursuing diverse career opportunities. This experience further solidified my commitment to advocacy and storytelling, aligning seamlessly with my career aspirations in digital marketing and media production.
In the world of digital marketing and media production, storytelling is paramount. It is a means through which narratives are crafted, identities are formed, and bridges are built. My family's journey, and my experiences as valedictorian, student body president and intern, all converge to define my belief that stories, when told with authenticity and purpose, can drive transformative change.
Through my professional pursuits, I aim to continue advocating for equity and inclusivity while merging my passion for storytelling with the power of digital marketing. My experiences have shown me the power of narratives in shaping perceptions and driving change so I aspire to create content that uplifts voices from marginalized communities- much like my own, that brings awareness to underrepresented narratives, and fosters empathy, understanding, and unity. I believe that by sharing these narratives, we can inspire others, challenge stereotypes, and bring about social change.
In conclusion, my family's journey has instilled in me a profound sense of resilience, determination, and the belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. These values, combined with my academic achievements and experiences, have crystallized my career aspirations in digital marketing and media production. I am committed to using the art of storytelling to build bridges, advocate for positive change, and amplify voices that have long been overlooked.
Mohamed Magdi Taha Memorial Scholarship
Mohamed Magdi Taha's commitment to standing up for what is right and his use of his strong voice and compassion as catalysts for change deeply resonate with my own aspirations and experiences.
As a child of immigrants, I grew up witnessing the resilience and determination of my parents as they navigated the challenges of adapting to a new country. Their journey instilled in me the importance of using my voice to bring attention to issues that matter, especially within my community. This lesson became tangible during my internship with Word Is Bond, where I traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for educational reforms that would include the contributions of Black innovators and leaders throughout American history. Growing up with no representation of Black or minority success stories in history courses severely impacted my aspirations. Recognizing the impact of underrepresentation in my own life as well as in my peers, I presented the argument that the lack of representation of Black excellence in history courses adversely affected Black students' aspirations, self-confidence, and ability to envision themselves pursuing diverse career paths. This experience underscored the power of advocacy in effecting change and solidified my commitment to using my voice for change.
Through my work with Word Is Bond, I also collaborated with the Portland Police Bureau, aiming to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community. I recognized that building a community required meaningful conversations and genuine efforts to understand one another's perspectives. By fostering open dialogue and working together, we sought to create positive change within our community and it resulted in reduced traumatic responses at the sight or sound of police as well as better relations between our local police department and the community.
Furthermore, my role as an up-stander extends beyond advocacy and into the realm of leadership. As the 4x elected student body president, I have used my position to create inclusive spaces where diverse perspectives are acknowledged and valued. By fostering an environment of respect and collaboration, I believe in empowering individuals to recognize their agency and contribute meaningfully to our shared community.
As I stand at the threshold of my college journey, I am filled with a sense of purpose and determination to utilize education as a means to uplift myself and my community. One way I plan to do so is by harnessing the power of media and storytelling. As an aspiring digital marketer and media creator, I recognize the influence of these platforms in shaping perspectives and sparking conversations. By leveraging these tools, I hope to create narratives that inspire empathy and encourage open-mindedness, ultimately contributing to the growth of a more connected and compassionate community. I also aspire to be a role model for other aspiring students who face similar circumstances. Having been through the challenges of breaking the cycle of poverty via the vehicle of education, I hope to inspire and give back to my community by mentoring young students, sharing my journey of success, and providing them with the guidance and support they need to pursue their dreams.
In conclusion, the legacy of Mohamed Magdi Taha underscores the significance of being an up-stander and using one's voice to advocate for change. Through my experiences as an intern, student body president, an advocate for educational reform, and a bridge-builder within my community, I have embraced this role and am dedicated to using my voice to uplift and unite. By pursuing a career in media and storytelling, and by fostering dialogue and understanding, I am committed to building a community that values justice, empathy, and the transformative power of collective action.
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
As I stand at the threshold of my college journey, I am filled with a sense of purpose and determination to utilize education as a means to uplift myself and my community. My plan after graduation is two-fold: first, I aim to embark on a career that merges my interests in digital marketing and media production with my desire to uplift others. Whether producing digital media that encourages and brings joy to others or working with a company that values diversity and inclusion in its marketing strategies, I am committed to making a positive impact on people's lives through my work.
Secondly, I aspire to be a role model for other aspiring students who face similar circumstances. Having been through the challenges of breaking the cycle of poverty via the vehicle of education, I hope to inspire and empower others to believe in their potential and strive for greatness. I envision myself giving back to my community by mentoring young students, sharing my journey of success, and providing them with the guidance and support they need to pursue their dreams.
My academic achievements and extracurricular activities have prepared me for this ambitious pursuit. I am honored to have been named the 2023 valedictorian of my high school and this could have only been achieved with the Z-man scholarship, a scholarship that supports economically disadvantaged high school students, which allowed me to focus solely on my total high school experience rather than my financial situation. Additionally, my involvement as the 4x elected student body president and captain of the soccer and basketball teams has allowed me to develop leadership skills and a sense of responsibility toward others.
One of my proudest accomplishments that I’ve received was during my internship with Word Is Bond. It was actually through this internship that I discovered my passion for digital content creation could become a viable career for me and the power it has to bring about meaningful change as well as shape societal perceptions. Growing up with no representation of Black or minority success stories in history courses severely impacted my aspirations. The lack of visible role models made me severely doubt my potential for success. Recognizing the impact of underrepresentation in my own life as well as in my peers, I pitched a policy in Washington, D.C., that aimed to update the American education system to acknowledge the significant contributions of Black innovators and leaders throughout history. I presented the argument that the lack of representation of Black excellence in history courses within the American education system adversely affected Black students' aspirations, self-confidence, and ability to envision themselves pursuing diverse career paths. This experience not only highlighted the importance of representation but also empowered me to be a catalyst for positive change. It taught me that I have the power to break barriers and inspire others, regardless of the challenges I face. It also taught me the strength of my own resilience and determination despite all limitations as seen carried out in my academic and extracurricular achievements. The overwhelming support from esteemed organizations like Open Society Foundation and public officials like Oregon senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley served as a powerful validation of my efforts, reaffirming my unwavering belief in the potential for transformative, positive change.
This scholarship would reaffirm my belief in the power of education and the opportunities it provides for personal growth and societal transformation. As I break the cycle of poverty, I am committed to inspiring others to pursue their dreams and rise above their circumstances. With this scholarship, I would not only be a recipient of financial support but also a beacon of hope for those who dare to dream beyond their current circumstances.
In conclusion, my goals in education are driven by a deep-rooted desire to break the cycle of poverty in my family and create a positive impact on my community and society. My academic achievements and extracurricular activities have prepared me for this journey, and my internship with Word Is Bond has further fueled my passion for making a difference through my career. Winning this scholarship would not only make my dream of attending college attainable but also reinforce my commitment to succeed and inspire others to overcome their obstacles. With the support of this scholarship from the WCEJ Thornton Foundation, I can overcome financial barriers, continue my mission to break the cycle of poverty and make a positive impact on my community and society at large through my education and career.
Ella Hall-Dillon Scholarship
Amid the Eritrean war, my parents faced insurmountable obstacles and tragedies. My mother's education was limited to the third grade as her village was bombed, prompting her perilous journey on foot to Sudan where she met my father. Together, they migrated to the USA, starting anew in a foreign land.
My last visit to Eritrea deeply moved me, witnessing the lasting impact of the war on the people, who carried emotional and physical wounds. Every family, including my own, had lost a parent, child, or sibling. Despite the devastating losses, the community's resilience inspired me, as they had fought with unwavering determination for freedom and emerged victorious.
Nonetheless, despite their sacrifices, my parents could only afford to send my eldest sibling to school, leaving me to fund my education on my own. These circumstances influenced my upbringing, creating a sense of urgency and focus on survival rather than envisioning a brighter future. The lack of role models who had overcome similar barriers limited my aspirations.
However, witnessing my parents and country’s determination inspired me. I became the student body president, valedictorian, and even pitched a policy in Washington, D.C. that aimed to update the educational system to acknowledge the significant contributions of Black innovators throughout history. I presented the argument that the lack of representation of Black excellence in history courses adversely affected Black students' career aspirations and self-confidence.
Though my journey has been marked by financial limitations and a survival mindset, I refuse to let circumstances define my potential. As I further my education, I strive to overcome the barriers that once seemed insurmountable and bring more representation to stories like mine. My parents have taught me the resilience and strength found within the struggle, and I am determined to inspire change and empower others in similar situations.
Douglass M. Hamilton Memorial Scholarship
Amidst the ongoing wars and conflicts in Eritrea, my parents faced insurmountable obstacles that prevented them from acquiring even a basic education. My mother, constrained by circumstances, never progressed beyond the third grade as her village and school were bombed, leaving her homeless. In a bid to escape the perils of war, she embarked on a perilous journey on foot to Sudan, seeking refuge, while my father ran towards the fire and joined the militia. My mother’s journey was common, although survival was highly unlikely.
To provide a safer life for their children, my parents eventually migrated to the USA and began adapting to a new language and foreign culture. They did not have the opportunity to complete their education and thus, presented me with unique challenges that shaped my mindset from an early age. The limitations imposed by our financial circumstances instilled in me a survival mindset, where day-to-day concerns took precedence over dreams and aspirations. Our limited resources not only restricted my awareness of opportunities but also hindered my ability to dream beyond the immediate circumstances of my life. In my household, the struggle to make ends meet was a constant reality. My parents, who themselves faced numerous barriers, worked tirelessly to support our family. They understood the importance of education but had to prioritize basic necessities over pursuing higher education. Their sacrifices were twofold, as they not only supported our family but also sent money back to our relatives in Eritrea, further stretching our already tight resources. So naturally, my parents were only able to afford sending my eldest sibling to school, leading me to tirelessly apply for scholarships and work diligently to fund my education on my own.
Despite their unwavering love and dedication, the weight of these responsibilities influenced my upbringing, creating a sense of urgency and a need to focus on survival rather than envisioning a future beyond our current circumstances. My dreams were shaped by the immediate realities I faced, and my goals were often overshadowed by the need to secure basic necessities. The absence of role models who had transcended similar circumstances made it difficult to envision a future beyond the confines of my household. The scarcity of resources, both financial and informational, created a barrier that limited my ability to explore different paths and cultivate ambitious aspirations.
However, in the midst of these challenges, I found strength and resilience. Witnessing the determination of my parents, who constantly strived to provide for our family, inspired me to persevere and seek opportunities for growth. Their sacrifices served as a reminder of the importance of education and instilled in me a drive to break the cycle of poverty. I realized that I had the power to shape my own future, despite the obstacles that stood in my way. With this determination, I continued on to being my high school’s 4x elected student body president, graduated as valedictorian, and was admitted into a university I didn’t think I could even dream about applying to.
While my journey has been marked by financial limitations and a survival mindset, I refuse to let these circumstances define my potential. As I further my education, I strive to overcome the barriers that once seemed insurmountable and utilize the many avenues I can take via my degree in digital marketing and media production to continue to bring more representation to stories like mine. My journey serves as a testament to the resilience and strength that can be found within the struggle, and I am committed to using my experiences to inspire change and empower others in similar situations.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Hearing the grief-stricken wailing of my mother echoing throughout my home was the most arduous and trying experience I’ve ever had to go through. On February 23rd of 2020, my mother received a call from her village in Eritrea informing her that my 29-year-old cousin, Silas, died while giving birth to her first child, taking the baby along with her. A blood-curdling shriek left my mom’s body as she collapsed to the floor with her phone clutched to her chest. She sat there with an expression that seemed as if she was begging God for an explanation and for instruction on how she was to relay this news to her sister, the mother of Silas. I stood there, watching my mother, unsure of what to say or do as I felt the grief begin to take over me. This had been the second news of death we received that year as another cousin of mine was recently mauled by relentless hyenas in the desert trying to flee from an oppressive government regime and war. I looked on as my unsuspecting older sister and father came home cutting the unsettling silence with their jovial banter, not knowing that their hearts would break in just a few moments. As soon as their eyes meet with my mom’s, she begins to break down recalling the beauty, filial piety, and intelligence of my cousin Silas in a song that is sung by mourners in Eritrea. She goes on to also lament the passing of the baby who never got to be kissed by its mother in a song that could be understood regardless of language.
As part of Eritrean culture, the community rallies to support the families in mourning by visiting their homes with food and water in tow. What was once one voice in my home, quickly became a choir of moaning over the next couple of days. My mom, whose heart is broken for her sister and her niece, went without proper food and sleep for days. Yet, she constantly would leave the guests downstairs to bring a plate piled with food to my bedroom so that I may eat comfortably away from the mourners as a way to shield me from the dejection that was thick in the air. She would go on to ask me about my homework, how I was feeling, and crack a smile to try to convince me that she was fine. This would continue for days on end with her delivering my meals, hugging me tightly, and pitching light-hearted conversations to divert my attention from the tragedy. Had I not known of the passing of my cousin, I wouldn’t have thought anything different from our interactions.
Her forcing herself to smile for me left such a profound impression on me, that I no longer looked at her, or anyone else the same. As I watched her try to mask her pain before me, I couldn’t help but think of the many people I’ve encountered throughout life who were struggling, yet do the same. How many smiles have fooled me? How many friends have left my presence unconsoled with their affliction unbeknownst to me? I made a declaration from that point on to be more considerate of those in the world who may be suffering quietly and even patient with those who lash out. As Jesus has called us to be the light of the world, I dedicated my life to shining in the darkness that is their anguish in order to provide comfort. As it is written in Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are those who grieve, for they will be comforted.” My love for others grew so deep after this realization, that I began to study how I was received by my peers and family members in order to learn how I could best serve them. I was pleased to find that my interest in entertainment could be an uplifting solace for others. From then on, I created my YouTube channel to help people laugh and forget about their troubles, even if just for a moment.
Furthermore, I believe that a true leader serves their community and leads by example. My hope is that my educational success as my high school’s 2023 valedictorian and my future accomplishments will be an example for those struggling and that despite the tragedies and major setbacks in our lives, we can persevere. These tragic experiences of loss in my family projected me into selecting the digital media production major to inspirit others through social media and share the comfort that comes in community. I aim to use the many avenues alloted through my degree to continue the conversation about the importance of mental health and impact the world, one heart at a time.

I have made it my mission to uplift and bring joy to people's lives. It was through a rather trying time in my family that I witnessed the comfort that can come from community. In 2020, my mother received a call from her village in Eritrea informing her that her 29-year-old niece, Silas, died while giving birth, taking the baby along with her. As part of Eritrean culture, the community rallies to support the families in mourning by visiting their homes with food and water in tow. Had I not known of the passing of my cousin, I wouldn’t have thought anything different from our interactions. As I watched her try to mask her pain before me, I couldn’t help but think of the many people I’ve encountered throughout life who were struggling, yet do the same. How many smiles have fooled me? How many friends have left my presence unconsoled with their affliction unbeknownst to me? From that point, I vowed to myself that I would do my best to make everyone I could feel comfortable and joyous, just like my mother did for me. Collaborating with my passion for video production, I decided that I was going to join the world of social media where I would upload videos that would act as an uplifting solace for others, helping people laugh and forget about their troubles, even if just for a moment.
“How are you?” Is one of the most common greetings asked worldwide, and the most popular response, “good” isn’t always true. My career of uploading uplifting content on YouTube and applying these skills of mine to digital marketing would allow me to positively impact the person who’s hiding the truth behind how their day really is. I will find new and creative ways to make a positive impact on others so that for however long it may be, I could take someone away from all of their problems, lose time, and most importantly, put a smile on their face. It brings me great joy to be able to give back to my community as I believe it’s a trait of a good leader to leave something better than when you found it. I recognize through my experiences with my peers and community at large that I have an influence and thus also the responsibility to steward it well. As I further my education, I plan to continue uplifting others through my YouTube channel and engaging in uncomfortable conversations that lead to impactful, positive changes in my community.

For the first half of my college career, I want to experiment with new career paths, further explore my known interests in digital media and even try out new hobbies. My main goal is to broaden my horizon in this period of my life as coming from a sheltered immigrant home didn’t really allow me to experience much outside of a very safe bubble that was also limited by finances and a survival mindset. I would love to network and intern to better develop more of an understanding of what I want for my future in these first two years. For the latter half of my college career, I want to hone in and focus on the career path that I discover is my best fit. I would love to work under and learn from someone experienced and knowledgeable in the digital media field at the beginning of my professional career and later apply that absorbed knowledge into my own entrepreneurial ventures, such as creating my own digital marketing agency.
As an effort to do my part and address the tension between the police and the black youth in my community, I participated in weekly group meetings throughout the summer with Portland police officers. We had the goal of showing that although we contrasted in appearance, we shared many similarities, including our humanity. My peers and I were also able to see a different side of the officers, without their uniforms, and were able to hold deep, vulnerable conversations that led us to making positive lasting relationships with one another while also leaving our meetings with an enlightened understanding of the way each of us experiences our lives. This resulted in reduced traumatic responses at the sight or sound of police as well as better relations between our local police department and the community.

My ability to uplift and strike joy in the hearts of my peers is what I would consider to be my most rewarding skill. I’ve considered this encouraging spirit of mine to be an aptitude but it wasn’t something that I intentionally practiced until recent years. On February 23rd, 2020, my family received the devastating news that both my cousin and her unborn baby had passed away in labor. As part of Eritrean custom, when a family is mourning, the whole community gathers to lament the passing of the family member. My name Is Jonathan Gedam and I’m a 17-year-old senior at Mannahouse Christian Academy in Portland, Oregon. Some of the things that I am passionate about include entertainment and uplifting others- I even, created a YouTube channel dedicated to just that. It really wasn’t until a very trying time for my family that I recognized just how impactful those traits of mine are. Even though my parents, like most immigrant parents, would rather I become a doctor or an engineer for stability purposes, I was glad to have found through my internship that my joy in uplifting others, coupled with my interest in digital media, could also be a viable career for me! This completely opened up a whole new world for me.
I would love to work under and learn from someone experienced and knowledgeable in the digital media field at the beginning of my professional career and later apply that absorbed knowledge into my own entrepreneurial ventures, such as creating my own digital marketing agency.

From that point, I vowed to myself that I would do my best to make everyone I could feel comfortable and joyous, just like my mother did for me. I will find new and creative ways to make a positive impact on others so that for however long it may be, I could take someone away from all of their problems, lose time, and most importantly, put a smile on their face.

Furthermore, I believe that a true leader is one that serves their community and places the concerns of the group above their own. Thus, I’ve sought to exercise servant leadership in all areas of my life including my school and soccer team. I was named the honorary captain of my team for leading us in exemplary sportsmanship as well as holding a prayer for a team that got in a car accident while en route to their game. Also, I made sure to maintain good spirits amongst my team as we almost weren’t eligible to participate in the finals. By the end of the season, my leadership resulted in securing first place in the finals as well as receiving an award for being the Sportsmen Team of the year.
Lastly, it was through a rather trying time in my family that I witnessed the comfort that can come from community. In 2020, my mother received a call from her village in Eritrea informing her that her 29-year-old niece, Silas, died while giving birth, taking the baby along with her. As part of Eritrean culture, the community rallies to support the families in mourning by visiting their homes with food and water in tow. What was once a few voices wailing in agony in my home, quickly became a choir of moaning over the next couple of days. My mom, with hopes to divert my attention away from the tragedy, would constantly go on pitching light-hearted conversations with me. I made a declaration from that point on to be more considerate of those in the world who may be suffering quietly and even patient with those who lash out. I decided to create a YouTube channel that would act as an uplifting solace for others, helping people laugh and forget about their troubles, even if just for a moment.

What do you want to be when you grow up? What’s your major? What colleges do you want to go to? Whenever I was asked these questions I would always respond with, “I don’t know” or, “I'm not sure yet, but I still have time.” Unfortunately, that time rapidly jumped from a couple of years to just a few short months in the blink of an eye. That's why I’m excited to explore my academic interests in college because as somewhat of an undecided major, I haven’t committed to a career path for my life yet. I’m eager to utilize the new resources provided to me in college to get help in finding my purpose. I've found that my passion is to be the light for the people who feel like they are always in the darkness, I want to make sure that everyone feels loved and comfortable in any situation they are in. One of the ways I do this is by making videos on my YouTube channel. Although, throughout my time making videos I have realized that some of my other favorite ways to uplift others are through laughter, playing sports, making videos, and spending quality time with others. I want to make sure that I take these qualities I have developed in my youth and apply them to the workplace to continue to uplift others in the future. I’ve recently discovered my interest in digital content creation through my love of uplifting others and fortunately, through my previous internship with Word is Bond, I was able to seriously consider being a content creator or working in digital marketing to be a viable career for me. While I am interested in this field, I also still find myself unsure about committing to it as I haven’t had much practical experience in other fields to compare. This is one of the reasons I have decided to apply to colleges that offer a plethora of programs and opportunities for me to explore. However, such aspirations do not come with cheap price tags. This scholarship would allow me to focus on realizing my college dreams and purpose by allowing me to hone in on my intellectual curiosity rather than the many part-time jobs I would have to maintain. It would eliminate my financial worries and allow me to pursue my academic goals passionately without hindrance. I know college will be stressful and will be an extreme and difficult transition but I will be forever grateful to know that the Viola Natural Lifestyle Scholarship will be comforting me by taking one thing off of my overflowing plate.

Hearing the grief-stricken wailing of my mother echoing throughout my home was the most arduous and trying experience I’ve ever had to go through. On February 23rd of 2020, my mother received a call from her village in Eritrea informing her that her 29-year-old niece, Silas, died while giving birth to her first child, taking the baby along with her. A blood-curdling shriek left my mom’s body as she collapsed to the floor with her phone clutched to her chest. She sat there with an expression that seemed as if she was begging God for an explanation and for instruction on how she was to relay this news to her sister, the mother of Silas. I stood there, watching my mother, unsure of what to say or do.
I made a declaration from that point on to be more considerate to those in the world who may be suffering quietly and even patient with those who lash out. As Jesus has called us to be the light of the world, I dedicated my life to shine in the darkness that is their grief in order to provide comfort. From then on, I created my YouTube channel (Jonny Vlogs) to help people laugh and forget about their troubles, even if just for a moment.

2. My idea of leadership is very much influenced by my faith. Jesus is found in Mathew 20:26 stating, “Whoever wants to be a leader among you, must be your servant.” I once pictured a leader to be some hot shot who drove fancy sports cars, had multiple assistants, and a harsh demeanor that justified their cold decisions with an “it’s just business” attitude. But now I’ve come to understand that true leadership looks like making personal sacrifices for the benefit of the group, actively listening to different perspectives, and having a humble and kind spirit that places the concerns of the group above their own. Personally, I would consider my ability to uplift and strike joy in the hearts of my peers to be my most rewarding skill. It wasn’t until I experienced a transformative realization through witnessing my mother prioritize my comfort above her own while she was grieving the death of her niece that I adopted these traits. It was then that I decided to be more considerate to those who may be suffering quietly and even patient with those who lash out. My compassion for others grew so deep after this realization, that I began to study how I was perceived in order to learn how I could best serve. Putting a smile on someone’s face was reward and motivation enough to continue with my newfound passion and implement it into all aspects of my life.
I’ve sought to exercise servant leadership in all areas of my life including my school, soccer team, and even at home. During the 2022 soccer season, I was named the honorary captain of my team for leading us in exemplary sportsmanship as well as holding a prayer for a team that got in a car accident while en route to their game. Also, I made sure to maintain good spirits amongst the team as we almost weren’t eligible to participate in the championship game. By the end of the season, my leadership resulted in securing first place in the finals as well as receiving an award for being the Sportsmen Team of the year.
Moreover, as the elected student body president for all 4 years, I’ve been dedicated to being a spokesperson for my peers that translates their concerns and requests to the school administrators.
Lastly, my family calls me the “Chief Peace Officer” as I have a special skill in mediating sibling spats. My siblings are a decade older than me so there’s not much I can actually say without being dismissed, however, I’ve found that leading in silence is also incredibly effective. When they observe me practicing patience in trying circumstances or responding with kindness, they’ve noticeably adjusted their behaviors to mimic mine. Having an influence is a responsibility I aim to steward well and I hope to learn more about how to be a quality leader throughout my time in college.
5. My school went online as part of COVID-19 regulations in 2020 and it was by far the most challenging thing I’ve experienced in my academic career.
Prior to the pandemic, I juggled school work, 2 team sports, as well as operating as the student council president which made it the norm for me to return home well after 9 pm. Due to this, I had very few moments in my day where I was able to study or complete assignments, so I took full advantage of whatever time I had available for my obligations.
However, when I was shifted to online learning, all my extracurricular duties were removed and replaced with a more rigorous curriculum. Typically, if I had trouble understanding a concept, I would be able to ask my teacher and receive a response in real-time. However, in the online learning structure, I had to submit my questions via email and wouldn’t receive a response for at least 2 days- pausing all ability to move forward with that assignment.
I quickly grew tired of my mundane schedule that cemented me before my laptop and leaned into my phone as a means to temporarily escape my work. I developed a pattern where I would get sucked into social media and by the time I lifted my head, the day had long passed while my assignment remained uncompleted.
Despite my love for content creation and the already scarce engagement with my peers during quarantine, I decided to go on a social media fast in order to prioritize my academics. I remained offline for 15 months and this discipline developed time management skills that greatly improved my grades. Thus, I consider that year of quarantine to be a gift to me and my future that I will look back on gratefully.
