As an openly queer individual and a first-generation college student from a single-parent household, I bring a unique perspective to my academic and professional pursuits. My dedication to community service is demonstrated through my involvement with a local non-profit children's theatre. I am a full-time student at Northern Illinois University, currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Advocacy and Public Communication. My prior academic achievements include an Associate’s degree and Business Management Certificate from William Rainey Harper, positioning me uniquely for leadership and management roles within non-profit and corporate sectors alike. In addition to my academic endeavors, I am actively involved in numerous leadership positions at the university. As a student advisor for the NIU Honors Program, I assist my peers with their academic concerns and provide necessary guidance. I am also serving as the president of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society - Kappa Omega Chapter, overseeing its activities and contributing to the enhancement of the society's growth. I am particularly proud of my involvement with the Husky Food Pantry as part of its Leadership Team. This role has allowed me to contribute directly to addressing food security within the university community. In my time as an undergraduate student, I have initiated a column named "Living a Life of Pride," designed to highlight and celebrate the achievements of the queer community, thereby contributing significantly to raising awareness and promoting inclusivity.

I have always been deeply passionate about the intersection of science, human biology, and compassionate care. This passion has driven me to pursue a career in healthcare and medicine, with a specific focus on becoming a physician. Background and Motivation: My journey into the world of healthcare began at a young age when I witnessed the profound impact that healthcare professionals can have on individuals and their families. Growing up, I had a family member who faced a serious illness, and I saw firsthand the empathy, knowledge, and dedication that healthcare providers demonstrated in providing care and support. This experience left an indelible mark on me and ignited my desire to pursue a career in medicine. Field of Interest: Within the vast and diverse field of healthcare and medicine, my specific interest lies in becoming a primary care physician. The decision to focus on primary care is deeply rooted in my belief in the fundamental importance of preventive medicine, holistic patient care, and the doctor-patient relationship. Why Primary Care: Holistic Approach: Primary care physicians have the unique privilege of forming long-term relationships with their patients. They are often the first point of contact for individuals seeking medical care. I am drawn to this field because it allows me to take a comprehensive and holistic approach to patient health. Rather than solely addressing acute illnesses, primary care providers have the opportunity to promote wellness, prevent disease, and manage chronic conditions. Advocacy for Preventive Care: Preventive medicine is an area I am particularly passionate about. I believe that many health issues can be avoided or mitigated through education and early intervention. As a primary care physician, I aim to be an advocate for preventive care, encouraging patients to make healthy lifestyle choices and undergo routine screenings to detect potential health concerns before they escalate. Community Impact: Primary care physicians often serve as the backbone of healthcare in communities, especially in underserved areas. I am committed to making a positive impact in underserved communities, where access to healthcare can be limited. By providing primary care services, I hope to contribute to reducing health disparities and improving overall community well-being. Continuity of Care: The continuity of care that primary care physicians offer is invaluable. Building long-term relationships with patients enables me to understand not only their medical history but also their unique needs, values, and preferences. This knowledge is essential in delivering personalized and effective healthcare. My journey into the healthcare and medicine field is driven by a deep sense of compassion, a commitment to holistic patient care, and a belief in the power of preventive medicine. As I pursue my goal of becoming a primary care physician, I am excited about the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals and communities, advocating for health and well-being at every stage of life.
    Writer for Life Scholarship
As a passionate and aspiring writer, my journey is marked by not only personal growth but also a commitment to using the written word as a force for change, expression, and connection. In this essay, I will discuss my goals as a writer and share a book that I believe should be read by everyone. My Goals as a Writer My journey as a writer is a continuous quest for self-improvement and contribution to the world of literature. I have set several goals for myself, each representing a step towards becoming a more proficient and impactful writer. 1. Mastery of Craft: Writing is an art, a medium through which thoughts, emotions, and stories are conveyed. To excel in this craft, I aim to continually refine my skills. This involves honing my command of grammar, style, and structure. It also means experimenting with different forms of writing, from poetry to fiction to essays. I believe that the more versatile I become as a writer, the better I can convey my ideas and connect with diverse audiences. 2. Amplifying Marginalized Voices: Writing has the power to uplift and amplify voices that are often unheard or suppressed. I am committed to using my platform as a writer to shed light on stories, perspectives, and communities that remain marginalized. This includes addressing social issues, sharing personal experiences, and advocating for justice and equality. I believe that literature should be a vehicle for inclusivity, empathy, and understanding. 3. Advocacy Through Words: Words can be a powerful tool for advocacy. Whether it's advocating for environmental conservation, social justice, or educational equity, I aspire to use my writing as a means of effecting positive change. Through well-researched articles, compelling narratives, and persuasive essays, I hope to inspire action, raise awareness, and mobilize others to contribute to a better world. A Book Recommendation: "To Kill a Mockingbird" If I were to recommend one book that I believe everyone should read, it would undoubtedly be "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. This literary masterpiece, published in 1960, is not just a novel; it's a profound exploration of societal issues and human nature, as seen through the eyes of a young girl named Scout Finch. Why "To Kill a Mockingbird"? Themes of Racial Injustice: Set in the American South during the 1930s, the novel addresses deeply ingrained racial prejudices and injustices. It follows the trial of Tom Robinson, a Black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman. Through the character of Atticus Finch, Scout's father and a lawyer defending Tom, the novel sheds light on the moral complexities of racial discrimination. Moral Growth and Empathy: "To Kill a Mockingbird" traces Scout's growth from innocence to understanding. It showcases how she and her brother Jem come to grasp the harsh realities of their society. Their journey is a poignant reminder of the importance of empathy and the potential for moral growth, even in the face of adversity. Universal Relevance: The themes explored in the novel remain remarkably relevant today. Issues of racial inequality, social justice, and moral integrity persist in our world. "To Kill a Mockingbird" challenges readers to confront their biases, question societal norms, and strive for a more just and compassionate society. Narrative Power: Harper Lee's storytelling is both compelling and thought-provoking. Her vivid characters and evocative prose draw readers into the world of Maycomb, Alabama, and leave a lasting impression. The novel's impact extends far beyond its pages. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a literary masterpiece that resonates with readers of all backgrounds and generations. Its exploration of racial injustice, moral growth, and empathy makes it a timeless work of literature. As I pursue my goals as a writer, I draw inspiration from the profound impact of books like this one, hoping that my words, too, can contribute to positive change and greater understanding in the world.

I want to be a role model for other first-generation, Mexican-American youth, proving that they too can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. Being a first-generation, Mexican-American college graduate empowers me to bridge cultures and create understanding. My heritage is rich in traditions, language, and values that I am proud to share. My career aspirations are intricately intertwined with my deep-rooted passion for fostering social-emotional well-being and meeting the intellectual needs of gifted children. As a dedicated advocate for education and a fervent believer in the potential of every child, I am committed to creating an environment where gifted children can thrive both academically and emotionally. Gifted children possess a unique set of abilities and challenges. They often experience a sense of isolation and struggle to find peers who share their interests and understand their intellectual pursuits. My career goal is to become an educational psychologist specialized in working with gifted children. I envision creating tailored programs and interventions that address their intellectual needs while nurturing their social and emotional development. One way I plan to achieve this is by designing enrichment programs that delve into advanced subjects and foster critical thinking. These programs will challenge gifted children academically, providing them with opportunities to explore subjects deeply and engage in meaningful discussions. By tailoring these programs to their interests and abilities, I aim to nurture their love for learning and help them realize their full potential. Equally important is the social and emotional well-being of gifted children. Many of them grapple with feelings of isolation, anxiety, and perfectionism. I plan to incorporate mindfulness and emotional intelligence practices into the curriculum, enabling them to understand and manage their emotions effectively. Group discussions and activities will encourage them to connect with peers who share their passions, reducing feelings of loneliness and fostering a sense of belonging. I intend to provide a platform for open dialogue about their experiences as gifted individuals. Creating a safe space where they can share their challenges and triumphs will not only validate their feelings but also equip them with coping strategies. This will contribute to their emotional well-being and help them develop resilience in the face of adversity. My future career also involves collaborating closely with educators and parents. I believe that a comprehensive approach to supporting gifted children is essential. Educators need the tools to identify giftedness and adjust their teaching methods accordingly. Parents, on the other hand, require guidance on nurturing their child's social-emotional growth alongside their intellectual development. Through research, workshops, and consultations, I intend to equip educators and parents with the knowledge and strategies they need to create an inclusive and supportive environment for gifted children. By fostering collaboration between schools, families, and mental health professionals, I aim to ensure that gifted children receive holistic support. My career goals are centered around creating an educational landscape where gifted children not only excel academically but also thrive socially and emotionally. By designing tailored enrichment programs, integrating mindfulness practices, and fostering open dialogue, I aspire to provide a comprehensive approach to meet the unique needs of gifted children. Through collaboration with educators and parents, I envision building a future where every gifted child can flourish and reach their full potential.

I was raised in a single-parent home, a structure marked by resilience and adaptability. From a young age, I was taught the importance of self-sufficiency and responsibility, values that have been instrumental in my journey. As a queer individual and a first-generation college student, my path to higher education has been paved with unique challenges and hurdles, each of which has shaped me into the person I am today. Navigating the world as a queer person has often been an uphill battle. Society's traditional expectations and prejudices have proven themselves relentless adversaries, but they have also fueled my resolve to advocate for myself and others in the LGBTQ+ community. I channeled this resolve into my college column, "Living a Life of Pride," which celebrates queer accomplishments and contributions to society. As a first-generation college student, I entered an unfamiliar world with few roadmaps. I had to learn the ropes independently, from deciphering college applications to choosing the right career path. However, this journey has empowered me to see obstacles as opportunities for growth and self-improvement. It has also instilled in me a profound appreciation for education as a transformative tool for social mobility and personal development. Being a full-time student while balancing volunteer work and leadership roles has stretched me thin. I've learned to manage my time efficiently, balance commitments, and understand the value of hard work. I'm proud to serve as the president of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society, a student advisor for the NIU Honors Program, and part of the leadership team at the Husky Food Pantry. Each of these roles has honed my skills, further prepared me for the future, and underscored the importance of service and leadership. The journey to where I am today has not been easy, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. The challenges have made me resilient, compassionate, and driven, qualities that will aid me in my pursuit of a Bachelor's in Advocacy and Public Communication at Northern Illinois University. Receiving this scholarship would provide significant financial relief, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on financial concerns. It would allow me to continue my volunteer work at the local non-profit children's theatre organization, which has been a powerful platform for me to give back to my community and express my creativity. Most importantly, this scholarship would contribute to fulfilling my goal of using my education to drive positive change. With my degree, I plan to advocate for marginalized communities and work towards a more equitable society. By alleviating some of the financial pressures associated with higher education, this scholarship will enable me to invest more of my time and energy into this meaningful work, helping me to become a better advocate, leader, and catalyst for change.
    Dustan Biegler Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in a single-parent home, I've always been familiar with the need for self-reliance. Many of my early experiences involved fixing and building things around the house - out of necessity and a desire to make our home a better place. These experiences sparked my interest in the Construction and Skilled Trades fields, ultimately turning a necessity into a passion that I wish to pursue further. Being a first-generation college student, I lacked the typical familial guidance when choosing a career path. However, my greatest influence has not been a specific person, but the community I grew up in. Observing the construction workers in my neighborhood, I admired their skills and precision. Their ability to create structures that contribute to the community left a profound impact on me. It’s the idea of being a builder - of being part of the creation of structures that could house families, businesses, and even dreams, that compels me to this field. As a queer individual, I have experienced what it feels like to be underrepresented, to fight for space, and to break down barriers. The construction field is traditionally viewed as a male-dominated industry. I am driven to be part of changing that perspective, to promote diversity and inclusivity in these skilled trades. I believe that different perspectives only add value, fostering innovation and creative problem-solving. Currently, I am the president of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society, the Kappa Omega Chapter, and I’ve demonstrated my commitment to leadership and service by working as a student advisor at the NIU Honors Program. My involvement in these leadership roles has equipped me with essential skills such as problem-solving, team management, and decision-making - all of which are crucial in construction and skilled trades. I intend to use my education to drive sustainable construction practices that lessen our impact on the environment. My dream is to develop affordable, sustainable housing solutions for underserved communities. This pursuit is not just about constructing buildings; it's about creating homes, fostering community development, and promoting sustainability. By doing this, I hope to make a positive impact on society, using my career as a tool for change, providing affordable, sustainable housing options, and helping to diversify the field of construction and skilled trades. While there is much work to be done, I am excited about the journey ahead and am committed to the hard work and perseverance it will require.

During my time at Northern Illinois University, I was bestowed with the honor and responsibility of serving as a student advisor for the NIU Honors Program. At the same time, I was the president of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society's Kappa Omega Chapter and a vital cog in the Leadership Team at the Husky Food Pantry. Juggling these roles while studying full-time was no small feat, but it was during this period that I encountered a challenge that truly put my tenacity to the test. In my second year of university, I had an ambitious idea to start a column in our university paper. I envisioned a platform that would celebrate queer accomplishments and contributions to society. However, proposing this idea was met with resistance from the editorial board, primarily due to concerns over the column's niche appeal. Despite this initial setback, I remained undeterred. I had seen firsthand the impact of representation and the importance of an inclusive narrative within our university community, and I was determined to ensure this column saw the light of day. I set about gathering data on the potential audience, sourcing stories that would appeal to a broader readership, and building a team of passionate volunteers who believed in my vision. After several months of tireless work, we managed to assemble a comprehensive proposal that addressed the editorial board's concerns. However, securing their approval was just the beginning. We faced an uphill battle with sourcing consistent content, maintaining reader interest, and dealing with inevitable backlash from those who disagreed with our mission. Yet, every hurdle we faced only served to galvanize our team further. We poured our hearts and souls into the column, ensuring that each edition was filled with inspiring stories and important discussions about the LGBTQ+ community. Through our determination and teamwork, "Living a Life of Pride" became a respected and influential part of our university newspaper. Through this experience, I learned invaluable lessons about perseverance, advocacy, and the power of representation. I realized that achieving meaningful change often involves facing resistance and requires relentless effort. More importantly, I learned the true meaning of tenacity. It is not just about having the strength to endure; it's about having the resolve to continue pushing forward, regardless of the obstacles in your path. The journey of establishing and managing the "Living a Life of Pride" column was arduous, but the experience fortified my resolve and honed my leadership skills. It allowed me to advocate for my community and contribute to a more inclusive narrative on campus. This tenacity I demonstrated will undoubtedly prove invaluable as I continue to work towards a more inclusive society and strive for excellence in my academic and career pursuits.

Identifying as a queer individual and being part of the LGBTQIA+ community has had a profound impact on my life. This journey has shaped me, tested me, and ultimately, taught me invaluable lessons about courage, resilience, and the power of authenticity. Navigating the world as a queer person is filled with unique challenges. The realization of my identity coincided with coming face-to-face with societal stigmas and stereotypes. Understanding my sexual orientation was a personal journey, a process of self-discovery that wasn’t always easy. Moments of self-doubt, fear of rejection, and a struggle for acceptance punctuated this journey. The emotional toll of these experiences is not easy to quantify, but they have fundamentally shaped my perspective on mental health. I learned firsthand the importance of emotional well-being, self-care, and the courage to seek help when needed. Despite the challenges, identifying as queer has also been a journey of empowerment. It was in the process of embracing my queer identity that I found strength and purpose. I began to see the value in my experiences, the potential in my voice, and the impact I could have as an advocate for equality. My queerness became a source of pride, a catalyst for my advocacy work, and an integral part of my identity. Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community has provided me with a sense of belonging and solidarity. This community, with its shared experiences and collective resilience, has been a constant source of support and inspiration. It has opened doors to amazing opportunities, such as launching my column, "Living a Life of Pride," which celebrates queer accomplishments and contributions to society. The impact of my LGBTQIA+ experiences extends to my academic life as well. As a first-generation college student pursuing a Bachelors's in Advocacy and Public Communication at Northern Illinois University, my experiences have influenced my commitment to advocacy and social justice. I have the honor of serving as a student advisor at the NIU Honors Program, the president of Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society the Kappa Omega Chapter, and part of the Leadership Team at the Husky Food Pantry. Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
Volunteering has been a cornerstone of my journey, enriching my understanding of empathy, service, and the power of community. My time at a local non-profit children's theatre organization and the campus food pantry at Northern Illinois University has significantly influenced my core values, shaping both my academic pursuits and my aspirations for the future. Volunteering has deepened my understanding of empathy. Providing for children's creative needs and addressing food insecurity within the campus community opened my eyes to the wide spectrum of human experiences. As a queer individual from a single-parent household, I'm familiar with adversity, but volunteering has exposed me to the struggles others face. This expanded perspective has allowed me to develop a more holistic, empathetic approach toward advocacy and public communication, my chosen field of study. My experiences in volunteer service have also underscored the value of hard work, perseverance, and resilience. Whether it was overcoming logistical hurdles to arrange a children's theatre performance or ensuring that the food pantry ran efficiently, I learned that real change often involves facing challenges head-on. This understanding is something I carry into my academic work, and my leadership roles at the university, and will undoubtedly apply in my future career. Volunteering has fostered a sense of community within me. Observing the interconnectedness of people's experiences and the impact that a single act can have on a community has underscored the importance of collective efforts in driving change. This sense of community fuels my work as a student advisor at the NIU Honors Program, the president of Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society, and a member of the Leadership Team at the Husky Food Pantry. These experiences have crystallized my life and career goals. I aim to utilize my education in Advocacy and Public Communication to fight for social justice and equality. I envision a future where I am actively involved in policy-making processes, ensuring the voices of marginalized communities, like the LGBTQ+ community that I am part of, are heard and accounted for. Moreover, inspired by my time at the food pantry and children's theatre, I also aspire to build or contribute to organizations that directly address community needs. Whether it's providing resources for underprivileged students, supporting LGBTQ+ youth, or championing mental health awareness, I am committed to creating spaces that foster hope and inclusivity. My volunteer experiences have shaped my core values, molding me into a more empathetic, resilient, and community-oriented individual. These experiences guide my journey as a student, inform my career aspirations, and shape the way I approach the world, keeping me committed to making a positive impact on society.

My journey as an individual, a student, and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community is a mosaic of various experiences, all rooted in a fervor for advocacy and equality. As a first-generation college student at Northern Illinois University (NIU), I am driven by the complexities of identity, diversity, and social justice that have intertwined to shape my life’s path. This path has led me to pursue a Bachelor's in Advocacy and Public Communication, aligning my passions with my academic and career aspirations. Identifying as queer, I've experienced firsthand the struggles of being part of an underrepresented community. These experiences have not only fueled my resolve to champion equal rights but also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the support, resilience, and unity that are emblematic of the LGBTQ+ community. We are a collective tapestry of diverse identities and experiences, bound together by a shared understanding of adversity and a commitment to love and acceptance. The LGBTQ+ community has profoundly impacted my life by providing a sense of belonging, fostering personal growth, and propelling my advocacy endeavors. Being part of this community means celebrating our achievements, addressing our shared challenges, and continually striving for acceptance and equality. It was this sense of community and shared purpose that inspired my column, "Living a Life of Pride", which applauds queer accomplishments and contributions to society. When it came time to choose my major, it felt like a natural progression to select a field that would empower me to create a positive impact on the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. A degree in Advocacy and Public Communication equips me with the tools and knowledge to navigate the intricacies of societal dynamics, policy-making, and effective communication. It amplifies my voice as an advocate and enables me to lobby for policy changes, educational reforms, and social equality more effectively. Being a student advisor at the NIU Honors Program, president of Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society, and a part of the Leadership Team at the Husky Food Pantry, I have realized the transformative power of education and leadership in driving social change. My pursuit of a degree in Advocacy and Public Communication is not just about earning an academic credential; it is a vehicle for creating tangible, positive changes in society. In essence, my identity as a queer individual and my experiences within the LGBTQ+ community are intrinsically connected to my choice of major. Healing Self and Community Scholarship
As an Advocacy and Public Communication student at Northern Illinois University, my unique contribution to making mental health care affordable and accessible stems from a multi-pronged approach: advocacy, education, inclusivity, and community involvement. I intend to use my skills in communication and leadership to advocate for policy changes that prioritize mental health care, arguing for its recognition as a fundamental right. I aim to launch awareness campaigns and educational programs that normalize conversations about mental health and highlight available resources, thereby breaking down stigma. Inclusivity is key. Drawing from my experiences as a queer individual, I advocate for training programs that enhance cultural competence among mental health professionals, making care more accessible to diverse communities. Finally, I see significant potential in community-led initiatives. Using my experiences volunteering at local organizations, I'd collaborate with community leaders to develop support systems at the local level, ensuring mental health care is accessible and affordable for everyone. My approach revolves around using communication as a catalyst for change to ensure everyone, regardless of background or financial situation, can access the mental health care they need.
    Doña Lupita Immigrant Scholarship
Born and raised in a single-parent home, I have been imprinted with values of resilience, determination, and respect for diversity. These principles have shaped my identity as a first-generation college student, a dedicated volunteer, a proud queer individual, and a staunch advocate for social equity. I see myself as a person defined not by circumstances but by values, choices, and actions that I am immensely proud of. My mother, as the sole nurturer and provider, instilled in me the value of resilience. We faced numerous socio-economic challenges, yet her unwavering courage and tenacity in overcoming them demonstrated the immense strength that resides within each of us. She taught me that no hurdle is insurmountable if we approach it with a determined spirit and a hopeful heart. From her, I learned the importance of hard work and determination. I watched her juggle multiple responsibilities to ensure our well-being and it inspired me to work diligently towards my goals. I carried this lesson with me as I embarked on my academic journey at Northern Illinois University, pursuing a degree in Advocacy and Public Communication while also serving in various leadership roles on campus. My mother also fostered an environment of respect and acceptance at home, teaching me to value and celebrate diversity in all its forms. Growing up queer, instilled in me the confidence to embrace my identity and advocate for inclusivity and equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community. This value is evident in my column, "Living a Life of Pride," which celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of queer individuals to society. Being raised by a single parent, I also came to appreciate the value of community. I saw how our neighbors, friends, and extended family stepped in to support us, teaching me that community ties and shared experiences play a vital role in our lives. This realization sparked my interest in volunteering at a local non-profit children's theatre and a campus food pantry, nurturing my desire to give back to the community. Should I have the opportunity to instill values in my children one day, I would emphasize the ones that have served me well: resilience, determination, respect for diversity, and the importance of community. Furthermore, I would add empathy and a commitment to social justice – values that I've come to appreciate deeply through my academic pursuits and personal experiences. I hope that these values will guide them, just as they have guided me, in navigating life's challenges, celebrating its diversity, and striving to make a positive impact on society. Through this, they would not only be creating meaningful lives for themselves, but also contributing towards a more equitable and compassionate world.
    Mental Health Importance Scholarship
I firmly believe that mental health is as important as physical health, perhaps even more so, given its profound influence on every facet of our lives – from how we think and feel to how we act and relate to others. As a student pursuing higher education and also juggling various leadership roles, maintaining a healthy mental state is paramount to performing effectively and nurturing positive relationships. Mental health shapes our capacity to handle stress, make decisions, and maintain a positive sense of self, all of which directly impact our performance, relationships, and general life satisfaction. As a queer individual and a first-generation college student from a single-parent family, I have experienced firsthand the strains that societal pressures, prejudice, and personal challenges can exert on mental health. I also understand how vital it is to have support systems and self-care strategies in place to navigate these strains. To ensure my mental well-being, I incorporate a variety of activities into my daily routine that help me manage stress and maintain a balanced perspective. Physical exercise, be it a walk in the park or a rigorous workout, is a crucial part of my regimen. Not only does it enhance physical well-being, but it also serves as an outlet for releasing stress and instilling a sense of discipline and achievement. Being a part of the theatre organization has offered a creative outlet, enabling me to express myself freely and authentically. Engaging in acting and storytelling helps me explore diverse perspectives and emotions, promoting empathy and emotional resilience. It also provides a sense of belonging and community, which is incredibly beneficial for mental health. Moreover, I find writing to be a powerful tool for introspection and self-expression. My column, "Living a Life of Pride", allows me to articulate my thoughts, feelings, and experiences as a queer individual. It serves as a platform for advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, which in turn, instills a sense of purpose and enhances my psychological well-being. I also find value in mindfulness practices such as meditation and deep-breathing exercises. These techniques help me stay present, cultivate awareness, and foster a sense of inner peace. They serve as anchors in turbulent times, helping me regain balance and composure. Seeking support is another crucial aspect of my mental health strategy. Whether it's through formal counseling or informal chats with friends and mentors, opening up about my experiences and feelings has been extremely beneficial. These conversations make me feel heard, understood, and less alone. Finally, volunteering at the food pantry provides me with a sense of purpose and connection. Helping those in need nurtures feelings of compassion and empathy, which have a positive impact on my mental state. Maintaining mental health is a continuous process that requires awareness, effort, and support. I believe that everyone should prioritize their mental well-being and adopt strategies that work best for them. By doing so, we can all lead more fulfilling lives and contribute more effectively to the communities we are a part of.

If I had the opportunity to recommend one book to every person in the world, I would choose "We Should All Be Feminists" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This succinct yet impactful book encapsulates an essential message about gender equality and its importance in today's society, a message that resonates deeply with my personal experiences and academic pursuits. "We Should All Be Feminists" is not a lengthy read, but its power lies in its simplicity and clarity. It eloquently demystifies the concept of feminism, peeling away the layers of misconceptions that have been built up over the years. The book paints feminism not as an aggressive or anti-men stance, but as a belief in the social, political, and economic equality of all genders. It underlines the urgency of embracing this belief for both individuals and society. As a gender-expansive queer individual, I have had firsthand experience of the biases, prejudices, and systemic disadvantages that stem from rigid gender norms and expectations. In my academic journey as a student of Advocacy and Public Communication at Northern Illinois University, I have also delved deeper into the theories and historical contexts of these challenges. Adichie's book succinctly addresses these very issues, making a case for feminism as a necessary perspective for achieving a more equitable society. As a volunteer at a local children's theatre and the campus food pantry, I have seen how gender stereotypes and inequality can impact people from different walks of life. The children I work with at the theatre, the people I serve at the food pantry, my peers, and I - we would all benefit from a world that is more understanding and accepting of diverse gender identities and expressions. As the president of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society and a student advisor at the NIU Honors Program, I strive to foster an environment that values inclusivity and equality. The principles expressed in "We Should All Be Feminists" align with these efforts. This book would provide valuable insights to anyone in leadership roles, guiding them to create more inclusive and respectful environments. The book's message reinforces the idea that everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, deserves recognition and respect for their achievements. The book's core principles resonate with my personal experiences and align with my academic, professional, and personal aspirations.

It has not only informed my personal experiences but also galvanized my career path and future aspirations. Growing up, I grappled with societal biases, prejudiced attitudes, and systemic disadvantages. The experience of navigating through a heteronormative society as a queer individual was fraught with challenges. However, these adversities also catalyzed introspection and self-discovery. They became the crucible where my resilience, empathy, and advocacy were forged. One particular area where my identity significantly influenced me is in my pursuit of education. Taylor Swift's '1989' album stands as a testament to her evolution as an artist, marking her definitive shift from country to pop music. While the entire album is rich with Swift's signature poignant lyrics and catchy melodies, my favorite song has to be "Shake It Off". This choice may not be esoteric, but it resonates with me on a profound level due to my journey and the challenges I have faced. "Shake It Off", with its infectious rhythm and buoyant spirit, is an anthem of resilience. As a queer individual and a first-generation college student from a single-parent household, I've had to navigate through a minefield of biases, societal expectations, and systemic disadvantages. There were moments of self-doubt, external judgments, and harsh criticisms. "Shake It Off" serves as a reminder during such moments that I should not let these negative elements define me or derail me from my path. The lyric "I never miss a beat, I'm lightning on my feet, and that's what they don't see" underscores the strength and agility that marginalized individuals often develop to navigate through societal prejudices. Despite the odds, we continue to move forward, undeterred by the hurdles. The song encourages listeners to focus on their journey rather than the noise around them, a philosophy that has guided me through my experiences. As a student of Advocacy and Public Communication, I find the song's message aligns with my personal and professional objectives. It speaks to my commitment to challenge societal narratives, advocate for inclusivity and representation, and 'shake off' the systemic biases that exist in society. In addition to the empowering message, I find the music composition and Swift's performance truly energizing. Whether I am engaged in my roles as a student advisor, society president, or writing for my column "Living a Life of Pride", the song's upbeat tempo provides a motivational backdrop to my efforts. It's my go-to song for those days when I need a little extra push to keep moving forward. "Shake It Off" also resonates with my community work. The spirit of the song mirrors the energy and resilience I witness while volunteering at the Husky Food Pantry and the local children's theatre organization. If dreaming big is about envisioning an audacious future, then my wildest dreams span not just personal success but also a transformative change for my community. I aspire to stand at the confluence of education, advocacy, and policy-making, effecting significant change for the marginalized and disadvantaged. One part of this audacious dream is to develop and implement comprehensive, inclusive policies that address systemic disadvantages and biases. The lack of inclusive policies has profound implications for marginalized individuals, and I dream of a world where every policy, be it in education, healthcare, or employment, is designed with inclusivity at its core. While this is a colossal task, my education in Advocacy and Public Communication equips me with the understanding of societal structures and the skills to challenge and reshape these dynamics. Another part of my big dream is to foster a widespread understanding and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. As a proud gender-expansive queer individual, I dream of a society that not only accepts but celebrates the diversity of human identities and experiences. I intend to further this through the power of narratives - sharing stories, challenging stereotypes, and advocating for representation in media, literature, and public discourses. Further, I aspire to create safe, inclusive community spaces. These spaces would act as support systems, sources of empowerment, and centers for social and cultural exchange, fostering a sense of belonging among individuals. Such spaces would also serve as platforms for education and advocacy, initiating important conversations around social justice, equality, and inclusivity. Education plays a prominent role in my dreams. As a first-generation college student, I understand the transformative potential of education and the challenges that underprivileged students often face in accessing it. My dream involves breaking down these barriers, ensuring that more students, regardless of their backgrounds, have access to quality education and the opportunities it offers. How will I make this dream a reality? Firstly, by leveraging my education. The knowledge and skills I gain from my degree in Advocacy and Public Communication form a critical foundation. Secondly, through a combination of relentless advocacy and tangible action. I am already involved in advocacy and community work, and I plan to expand this in the future. Finally, by staying true to my values of resilience, empathy, and dedication. These values, instilled in me by my parent, have carried me through my journey so far and will continue to drive me toward my dreams. My wildest dreams are not about personal accolades but about creating a society that is truly inclusive, equitable, and empathetic. This is a mammoth task, but with my education, passion for advocacy, and unwavering dedication, I am ready to embrace this challenge and make my dream a reality.

Being raised by a single parent had a profound impact on my upbringing and has significantly influenced my future aspirations. As a child of a single-parent household, I was quickly exposed to the realities of life. It instilled in me a sense of independence and responsibility from an early age. I observed the challenges my parent had to navigate on their own, balancing work and parental duties, which required exceptional fortitude. The way they handled these challenges, with grace and determination, laid a solid foundation for my values of resilience, grit, and dedication. This reality also made me recognize the importance of community support and the critical role it plays in the lives of those facing challenging circumstances. Our community played a significant role in my upbringing. It was through their kindness and support that we found the strength to navigate through tough times. This understanding sparked my passion for community work, leading to my volunteer role at a local non-profit children's theatre organization. Being raised by a single parent also amplified my appreciation for the transformative power of education. My parent, despite their struggles, always emphasized the importance of education as a means to broaden horizons and create opportunities. This lesson has been ingrained in me, fueling my determination to be a first-generation college student. CEW IV Foundation Scholarship Program
The inherent strength of any society can be gauged by how well it supports its most vulnerable members. Historically, society's response to the problems faced by the disadvantaged has been characterized by insufficient policies and inadequate empathy, often treating them as peripheral issues. I firmly believe that a change in society's approach is not just necessary, but urgent. At the heart of this issue is the failure to recognize the systemic nature of disadvantage. Individuals do not exist in a vacuum, and their circumstances are often the product of various intersecting societal structures like socioeconomic status, race, gender, sexuality, and disability. Systemic disadvantage is perpetuated by deeply ingrained biases and institutionalized inequities, which cannot be remedied through individual effort alone. Thus, a societal-level shift is essential, one that acknowledges the systemic root of these issues and aims to rectify them through comprehensive, targeted, and inclusive policies. Society's response to disadvantaged groups has often been one of charity, not empowerment. While charity is crucial in providing immediate relief, it is not a sustainable solution in the long run. Disadvantaged individuals need tools and opportunities to uplift themselves, and society needs to transition from a model of charity to one of empowerment. This means investing in education, providing equitable opportunities, ensuring fair wages, and creating inclusive workplaces and communities. Empowerment fosters resilience and self-sufficiency, enabling individuals to break free from cycles of disadvantage. Another significant aspect that needs changing is the narrative around disadvantaged groups. Stereotypes and stigmas often exacerbate their struggles, leading to social exclusion and discrimination. It is essential to shift these narratives, celebrating diversity, promoting understanding, and challenging biases. Society needs to understand that being disadvantaged does not equate to being deficient. Each individual, irrespective of their circumstances, brings a unique perspective and value to our collective social fabric. It is crucial to amplify the voices of disadvantaged individuals in conversations about their issues. Too often, decisions are made about them without them, leading to policies that are detached from their realities. Ensuring their active participation not only makes for more effective policies but also fosters a sense of ownership, dignity, and respect. To rectify the issues faced by disadvantaged groups, society needs a transformative approach that acknowledges systemic disadvantage, empowers individuals, challenges harmful narratives, and amplifies the voices of the disadvantaged. Only then can we create a society that is truly inclusive, equitable, and just? This change is not just a matter of social justice; it is a test of our collective empathy, humanity, and progress.
    Joshua A. Vaughn Memorial Scholarship
My decision to pursue an education in Advocacy and Public Communication, closely related to community studies, is fueled by a strong sense of duty toward my community and a fervent desire to enact positive change. I believe that my lived experiences, coupled with a formal education in this field, provide me with a unique perspective and a powerful tool to advocate for those in need. As a gender-expansive queer individual and a first-generation college student, I am no stranger to the struggles of marginalization, misunderstanding, and systemic biases. These personal experiences have not only fostered a deep empathy within me for others who face similar challenges but have also ignited a strong drive to work toward social justice and inclusivity. In the realm of community studies, it is essential to grasp the complexities of societal structures and the dynamics of power and privilege that influence these structures. My goal is to leverage the knowledge gained through my education to challenge and reshape these dynamics, making our communities more inclusive, empathetic, and equitable. One key way in which I plan to improve and strengthen my community post-graduation is by working toward the development and implementation of inclusive policies. While societal attitudes towards marginalized communities are slowly evolving, institutional policies often lag. Inclusive and equitable policies are crucial in creating a lasting impact, providing a backbone of support that can outlast societal ebbs and flows. I plan to continue advocating for the LGBTQ+ community, sharing narratives that broaden understanding, break down stereotypes, and celebrate diversity. Advocacy efforts can lead to a ripple effect, inspiring others to join the cause, and initiating crucial conversations that can influence societal perceptions and attitudes. I am intent on creating safe, inclusive spaces within our community, where individuals can find not only material support but also a sense of belonging. My involvement with the Husky Food Pantry serves as a precursor to this effort. I believe in the power of community spaces in fostering connections, providing support, and empowering individuals, and I intend to work towards the establishment of such spaces. I aspire to use my knowledge to empower others through education. The power of education in effecting change cannot be overstated. By sharing knowledge about societal structures, biases, and the importance of inclusivity, I aim to equip others with the tools to be advocates in their own right, creating a network of change-makers within our community. My decision to pursue an education in Advocacy and Public Communication, akin to community studies, stems from a deeply personal space, shaped by my own experiences and driven by a commitment to social justice. It is my firm belief that through inclusive policies, advocacy, community spaces, and education, I can contribute to creating a community that is stronger, more inclusive, and more empathetic.
    Disney Super Fan Scholarship
When I contemplate my love for Disney, the aspect that truly resonates with me is the magic it exudes, that unique enchantment that transcends age, race, and gender. This 'magic' is not simply about the fantastical elements in its movies or the joy that a trip to Disneyland induces, but rather, it is about the transformative power of its narratives, the lessons it imparts, and the limitless creativity it inspires. As a child, Disney was my portal into worlds that stretched far beyond my immediate environment, each film a journey into a different realm, every character a new friend with their own unique story. Be it Ariel's underwater kingdom or Mulan's ancient China, each world was painted with such vibrant colors and animated with such intricate details that I found myself falling in love with the art of storytelling, sparking creativity within me that has carried over into my adult life and my work with a local non-profit children's theatre organization. This has imbued me with the capacity to communicate complex narratives, be they in my "Living a Life of Pride" column or in my advocacy work for the LGBTQ+ community. But more than just the colorful worlds and memorable characters, my favorite aspect about Disney is the underlying messages its narratives hold, teaching valuable life lessons cloaked in enchanting tales. Movies like "The Lion King" and "Inside Out" deftly handle themes such as loss, resilience, and emotional intelligence. These themes have shaped my worldview, teaching me about strength and resilience in the face of adversity – qualities that have been instrumental in my personal journey as a gender-expansive individual. Disney, to me, is also a champion of dreams and the belief in their realization, no matter how big or small. This unwavering faith in the power of dreams has been a significant part of my decision to pursue higher education as a first-generation college student, despite the obstacles in my path. Much like Tiana in "The Princess and the Frog," I have learned that dreams are worth fighting for and that hard work, determination, and a dash of magic can make them come true. The inclusivity and diversity found in recent Disney narratives is another element that endears Disney to me. Films like "Moana" and "Coco" celebrate cultural diversity, while "Zootopia" subtly addresses issues of prejudice and bias. As an advocate for inclusivity and acceptance, these stories align with my values and my mission to create a more accepting and understanding society. My favorite thing about Disney is its magic, which manifests itself in different ways - in its imaginative storytelling, life lessons, belief in dreams, and celebration of diversity. This magic has played a crucial role in shaping who I am today – a storyteller, a dreamer, a first-generation college student, and an advocate. And to me, this is the true beauty of Disney, its ability to inspire, teach, and ignite the spark of magic in everyone, irrespective of who they are or where they come from.
    Miguel Mendez Social Justice Scholarship
As a student of Advocacy and Public Communication at Northern Illinois University, my personal and academic journey has been significantly shaped by my efforts to address an important social issue - that of advocacy and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community. Being a queer individual, I've personally experienced the struggles, the misunderstandings, and the systemic biases that pervade our society. This experience, coupled with my academic pursuits, has led me to dedicate myself to fostering acceptance, empathy, and equity in our society. In the realm of advocacy, I believe in the power of knowledge, narratives, and personal stories. For this reason, I launched my column, "Living a Life of Pride." Through this medium, I aim to bring light to queer accomplishments and contributions, oftentimes overlooked or unspoken in conventional narratives. My goal is to challenge ingrained stereotypes and biases, and in their place foster a broader, more nuanced, and positive understanding of the LGBTQ+ community. Each story penned and shared is a step towards shifting attitudes, initiating important dialogues, and eventually, leading to a more inclusive society. In parallel to my advocacy through writing, I have found a meaningful avenue of addressing this social issue in the sphere of higher education. As a student advisor at the NIU Honors Program and the president of Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society, I hold positions of influence and responsibility. I take these roles as an opportunity to lead by example, to show that being queer and successful are not mutually exclusive. I aim to inspire others, especially those grappling with their own identities, showing them that it is possible to be proud of who you are, to be accepted, and to make significant contributions to society. Part of my effort in addressing this social issue also lies in actively working towards creating safe and inclusive spaces. My involvement with the Leadership Team at the Husky Food Pantry is one such effort. At the pantry, we strive to provide not only physical sustenance but also a sense of community and acceptance, irrespective of one's identity or background. My studies in Advocacy and Public Communication have armed me with the understanding and skills to effect change at a policy level. While attitudes are slowly shifting, systemic biases and institutional policies often lag behind. In the future, I aim to contribute to the development of inclusive and equitable policies that respect and celebrate diversity, thereby institutionalizing the acceptance that we are striving towards. My journey in addressing the social issue of LGBTQ+ acceptance and advocacy is multifaceted. From writing narratives that challenge stereotypes, to leading by example in my academic community, creating inclusive spaces, and aiming to influence policy, I am committed to creating a society where diversity is celebrated, not just tolerated. This effort is not just for myself, but for every queer individual who has ever felt misunderstood, marginalized, or alone. It is a continuous effort, one that requires perseverance, resilience, and hope. But, as a proud queer individual and a dedicated student, I am up for the challenge and believe in the power of change.
Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship
As a dedicated fan and student of the intricacies of the Harry Potter universe, it is without a shadow of a doubt that I resonate deeply with the values embodied by the House of Ravenclaw. The house, renowned for its pursuit of intellect, wisdom, and creativity, strikes a harmonious chord with my personal and academic ethos. I believe my characteristics and experiences render me an ideal candidate for this esteemed house, akin to the qualities of notable Ravenclaws like Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang. Ravenclaw's emblem, the eagle, signifies a broad vision and an ability to soar above, viewing situations from a wider perspective. This aligns with my nature as a person who appreciates the big picture, constantly seeking patterns and connections in my academic pursuits and life experiences. As a student of Advocacy and Public Communication at Northern Illinois University, my academic journey exemplifies the thirst for knowledge characteristic of a true Ravenclaw. I strive to understand the diverse facets of communication, its power in shaping societies, and its role in advocacy. Ravenclaws are known to celebrate individuality and eccentricities, a trait that mirrors my life as a gender-expansive individual. I've never shied away from my uniqueness but instead, have embraced it, using it as a platform for advocacy and education. I write a column titled "Living a Life of Pride," celebrating queer accomplishments, thereby using my distinct perspective to enrich the world around me, much like a true Ravenclaw. Creativity is yet another hallmark of the Ravenclaw house. I find this mirrored in my involvement with the local non-profit children's theatre organization, where creativity is the lifeblood of our productions. Just like Rowena Ravenclaw, who appreciated the “witty” and “ready-minded,” I understand that creative solutions often lead to extraordinary outcomes, both on and off the stage. The décor of my dorm room is a testament to my adoration for the Harry Potter universe, with a special emphasis on the Ravenclaw house. My dorm room reflects the deep respect and admiration I hold for this house and its values. I have even curated a space that emulates the Ravenclaw common room's intellectual ambiance, replete with books, scrolls, and a replica of Rowena's enchanted diadem. This space serves as a haven for creativity, critical thinking, and deep discussions, offering me and my friends a slice of the magical world of Hogwarts. My quest for knowledge, a celebration of individuality, and inclination toward creativity make me a perfect fit for the Ravenclaw house. Like the wise old Sorting Hat sings, "Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure," and it is this treasure that I seek to cultivate within myself and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of the Ravenclaw legacy.

As a first-generation college student working towards a Bachelor's degree in Advocacy and Public Communication at Northern Illinois University, my educational journey is not just a quest for personal growth, but a mission to use this growth to facilitate change and contribute positively to society. The intersection of personal experiences, education, and a vision for a more inclusive society frames my aspiration to use my education to foster acceptance, empathy, and equity in our society. One fundamental way I plan to utilize my education to make a positive impact is through advocacy. The knowledge and skills I am acquiring in my field of study will be instrumental in raising awareness about marginalized communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ community. With my education, I plan to shed light on the societal challenges these communities face, from prejudice and discrimination to systemic biases. It is my firm belief that my efforts in advocacy, backed by a strong educational foundation, can help trigger important dialogues, shift attitudes, and foster a more understanding and inclusive society. I plan to harness the power of communication to amplify the voices of those often left unheard. As a student of Public Communication, I understand the power that narratives hold in shaping perceptions and driving change. I have already embarked on this journey by starting my column, "Living a Life of Pride," which celebrates queer accomplishments and contributions. In the future, I plan to expand this effort, using various platforms and mediums to share diverse stories that foster empathy and break down stereotypes. In my academic journey, I have learned that education is not solely about individual growth but also about collective growth. To this end, I also aspire to contribute to my community by mentoring and supporting others. I envision using my experiences and education to guide and inspire other young individuals, especially those who identify as LGBTQ+ or come from similar backgrounds as mine. By offering them academic and emotional support, I believe I can help them navigate their unique challenges, motivate them to pursue their education and empower them to make their positive contributions to society. My education equips me with the knowledge and skills necessary to effect change at a policy level. By understanding the intricacies of policy-making, I can contribute to the development of more inclusive and equitable policies, be it in educational institutions, organizations, or even at a governmental level. By influencing policy, I can help create environments that respect diversity, ensure equity, and provide opportunities for all, irrespective of their identity or background. My plan to use my education to make a positive impact is rooted in the belief that knowledge and skills are tools of change. Through advocacy, communication, mentorship, and policy influence, I aim to leverage my education to foster a society where diversity is celebrated, inclusivity is the norm, and equity is non-negotiable. I believe that the true measure of my education will be in the change it inspires, the voices it amplifies, and the progress it facilitates.
    McClendon Leadership Award
Leadership, to me, transcends the confines of simple hierarchical dynamics and ventures into the realm of personal qualities, values, and the ability to inspire and bring about change. It is a nuanced blend of vision, resilience, empathy, decision-making, and most importantly, service to others. This understanding of leadership has been shaped by my experiences and engagements, from growing up in a single-parent household to my involvement in university programs and the broader community. One fundamental aspect of leadership, as I perceive it, is the ability to empower and inspire. Leaders are catalysts, sparking enthusiasm, encouraging growth, and fostering a sense of purpose and direction in others. This aspect has been a prominent feature of my role as a student advisor at the NIU Honors Program, where I had the privilege of guiding and mentoring other students. Here, I learned that leadership is not about asserting authority, but about cultivating an environment of mutual respect and personal growth. A leader, in my perspective, is also characterized by resilience and an unwavering spirit. Growing up in a single-parent home, I witnessed my mother tackle numerous challenges with grit and determination. This instilled in me the understanding that leaders are not infallible beings, but individuals who, despite the odds, persevere and persist. Leaders face setbacks and hurdles, yet they stay committed to their goals and inspire others through their strength and resilience. Leadership embodies empathy and a sense of social responsibility. As part of the Leadership Team at the Husky Food Pantry, I witnessed and experienced leadership driven by compassion, understanding, and a commitment to serve. This role emphasized that leadership is also about stepping forward, understanding the needs of others, and taking action for the collective welfare. Leadership also entails the courage to champion important causes and the creativity to stimulate change. When I initiated my column "Living a Life of Pride," I discovered that leadership often means charting a new course and inspiring important dialogues. This experience reiterated that leaders are not merely followers of established paths but are trailblazers who are not afraid to make their own. So, why is leadership important? It's simple. Leadership is the engine that drives change, innovation, and progress in any group, community, or society. Without effective leadership, teams stagnate, organizations falter, and societal growth is hindered. Leadership drives action, stimulates progress, and fosters an environment conducive to growth and development. In a world characterized by diverse challenges, from social inequities to environmental issues, the importance of capable, empathetic, and service-oriented leadership cannot be overstated. Leadership to me is a multifaceted concept that blends vision, resilience, empathy, and a commitment to serve. It is not merely a role or a title, but a set of qualities and values that inspire change and motivate others to strive for their best. Leadership is the driving force that propels us forward, pushing us to innovate, grow, and continually strive for a better future. It is a profound responsibility and an extraordinary opportunity to make a difference. It is this understanding of leadership that guides my actions and aspirations.
Robert F. Lawson Fund for Careers that Care
As a dedicated individual navigating the complexities of identity and purpose, I am primarily defined by two roles: a proud gender-expansive transgender individual and an aspiring advocate in the field of public communication. Born into a single-parent household and being a first-generation college student, I have learned the true meaning of resilience, determination, and the importance of education. My experiences have shaped my worldview and created a sense of duty towards marginalized communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ community. My journey so far has been characterized by the relentless pursuit of knowledge, community involvement, and advocacy for equality. As a student at Northern Illinois University, I am working towards a Bachelor's degree in Advocacy and Public Communication. Concurrently, I am actively engaged in numerous roles that enable me to make a positive impact within my community. I serve as a student advisor in the NIU Honors Program, the president of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society, and a part of the Leadership Team at the Husky Food Pantry. Each of these roles represents my commitment to service and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Regarding my plan to make a positive impact on the world through my career, my ambition is to create spaces of acceptance and dialogue. I aspire to a career that allows me to drive societal change, be it in public policy, non-profit leadership, or diversity and inclusion consulting. Each of these paths would allow me to leverage my skills and experiences in advocacy and public communication to champion the rights of marginalized communities. To this end, my plan comprises several key strategies. First, I intend to leverage the power of communication to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues, challenge stereotypes, and advocate for changes that will make our society more inclusive and accepting. As the founder of the "Living a Life of Pride" column, I have already begun this work, using the power of words to shed light on queer accomplishments and contributions to society. I aspire to contribute to public policies or organizational strategies that support LGBTQ+ individuals. As someone with personal experience of the challenges faced by this community, I am in a unique position to offer insights and recommendations that can lead to more equitable policies and practices. I wish to use my platform and professional expertise to mentor others, especially those within the LGBTQ+ community. By providing guidance and support, I hope to empower future generations to embrace their identity, navigate their challenges, and make positive contributions to the world. In essence, my life journey and personal experiences have armed me with a profound sense of purpose. I am not just a student seeking to earn a degree, but a determined individual striving to turn the tide towards a more inclusive and empathetic world. My mission is to ensure that my professional journey goes hand in hand with my conviction of creating positive change, using my career as a platform to amplify voices, advocate for equality, and build bridges of understanding and acceptance.
    Corrick Family First-Gen Scholarship
Embarking on the journey to frame my career aspirations has been an evolving dialogue between my personal experiences and the professional skills I am garnering. My ultimate aim is to amalgamate my personal beliefs with my professional growth, aspiring to occupy a role where I can effect meaningful societal changes, specifically advocating for underrepresented communities, with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ rights. My interest in Advocacy and Public Communication is far from arbitrary. It stems from my own life as a gender-expansive transgender individual and the myriad experiences I've garnered being a part of a society that, all too often, struggles with understanding and accepting individuals who do not adhere to traditional gender identities. Despite the challenges, these experiences have not defeated me; instead, they have fueled my resilience, enriched my empathy, and highlighted the power of advocacy. I envision my career in a realm where I can influence policy-making, work in non-profit leadership, or serve as a consultant for organizations aiming to enhance their inclusivity and understanding of diversity. Each of these paths leverages the power of Advocacy and Public Communication and aligns with my mission of making a tangible difference. The various experiences I've had have significantly contributed to shaping these career aspirations. Growing up in a single-parent household, I've witnessed determination, resilience, and an unwavering spirit, qualities that resonate strongly with the demanding yet rewarding journey of advocating for rights and social change. As a first-generation college student, I've grappled with academic and social challenges, which has broadened my understanding of the systemic obstacles many students encounter. Further, my leadership roles, as the student advisor at the NIU Honors Program and president of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society, have cultivated critical skills like strategic decision-making, problem-solving, and effective communication. They have also underlined the importance of empowering others, fostering a shared vision, and cultivating an environment of mutual respect and understanding. These roles have honed my leadership skills, preparing me for a future where I might lead a team dedicated to advancing social change and promoting LGBTQ+ rights. My work with the Husky Food Pantry and the local non-profit children's theatre has taught me the power of service and the impact of collective action on community welfare. These volunteering experiences have enriched my empathy and social responsibility, compelling attributes for anyone working towards social change. Starting my column, "Living a Life of Pride," has perhaps been the most telling of my aspirations. It was an exercise in courage, vision, and creating impactful narratives, elements I see as crucial in my future career. This initiative gave me an avenue to bring to light important LGBTQ+ issues and stimulate dialogues about diversity, and inclusivity, which is reflective of my career aspiration to continue this conversation on a larger scale. In essence, my future career aspirations are deeply rooted in my past experiences and the lessons I have drawn from them. It is these lessons, the growth I've achieved, and the impact I aim to make that guide my career trajectory. As I continue my academic journey, I carry with me the resolve to transform societal narratives and champion the rights and acceptance of marginalized communities.
    Gender Expansive & Transgender Scholarship
Reflecting on my journey as a gender-expansive transgender individual is like leafing through a book filled with chapters of understanding, acceptance, self-discovery, and resilience. I have faced the challenges of gender identity in a society that often struggles to understand or accept those who do not fit neatly into traditional categories. However, these experiences have not hindered me; instead, they have strengthened my resolve and shaped me into the resilient individual that I am today. Despite the broadening societal awareness of LGBTQ+ issues, educational support for transgender students often remains inadequate. There is a prevailing lack of understanding about the experiences and needs of transgender students among faculty, staff, and peers. This has sometimes resulted in a sense of isolation, difficulty participating in gender-segregated activities, and even overt discrimination. The impact is not just emotional but can also interfere with academic performance and engagement. As a student at Northern Illinois University, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Advocacy and Public Communication. My educational goal is to leverage the power of communication to influence societal narratives positively, particularly around the topics of diversity and inclusion. The ultimate aim is to foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding where everyone, regardless of their gender identity, feels seen, heard, and valued. Upon completing my undergraduate degree, my career goal is to work in a role that allows me to drive social change and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. I envision myself possibly working in public policy, non-profit leadership, or in a consultative role helping organizations become more inclusive and supportive of diversity. In terms of my future impact on the LGBTQ+ community, my commitment to service and advocacy remains unwavering. I believe that my unique experiences and the insights I gain from my education will enable me to contribute significantly to my community. One of the ways I aim to achieve this is by using my skills in communication and advocacy to amplify LGBTQ+ voices and issues, particularly in areas where representation is still lacking. I intend to use the knowledge and experiences I will have gained to mentor and guide future generations of LGBTQ+ students. By sharing my own journey and the lessons learned along the way, I hope to inspire and support others in overcoming their challenges. I believe that my most significant potential impact lies in the sphere of societal attitudes and perceptions. By actively challenging stereotypes, advocating for policy changes, and working to increase understanding and acceptance, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive society. My journey as a gender-expansive transgender individual has been marked by both challenges and triumphs. Despite the barriers I have encountered, I remain steadfast in my educational and career goals. I am committed to using my experiences and future degree to drive positive change and make a lasting impact on the LGBTQ+ community.
    Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
In reflecting upon my journey, my conviction as a leader is firmly rooted in my experiences, challenges, and accomplishments. My leadership abilities were honed not just in the lecture halls of Northern Illinois University or within the confines of academic pursuits, but in the various roles, I have undertaken in the community and in the service of others. From my early beginnings growing up in a single-parent household, I was given a first-hand perspective on resilience, determination, and the capacity to navigate challenges. I believe these formative experiences have significantly contributed to shaping my approach to leadership, instilling in me the values of perseverance, empathy, and the ability to make decisions under challenging circumstances. At Northern Illinois University, my leadership journey took shape in a myriad of ways. As a student advisor for the NIU Honors Program, I was given the unique opportunity to guide and mentor other students through their academic journey. In this role, I experienced the true essence of leadership – being of service to others. Here, I learned that a true leader is not merely someone who leads but someone who empowers others to find their path. My leadership capacity was further put to the test as the president of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society, the Kappa Omega Chapter. Here, I was responsible not just for my own success but for the success of an entire community of students. In this role, I developed critical skills such as strategic thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. Yet, more importantly, I recognized that leadership was about building a shared vision and cultivating an environment where everyone felt valued and heard. Furthermore, my work with the Husky Food Pantry required me to step up in ways that were at once challenging and profoundly rewarding. It demanded a brand of leadership that was rooted in compassion, empathy and a firm commitment to social responsibility. Leading efforts to combat food insecurity within our university community taught me that leadership is not about prestige or power, but about making a difference. While these roles have certainly cultivated my leadership skills, it is perhaps my initiative in starting my column, "Living a Life of Pride," that truly encapsulates my leadership ethos. This endeavor required not only vision and creativity but also the courage to champion an important cause, to give voice to marginalized narratives and to stimulate important dialogues about diversity and inclusion. My leadership philosophy has been shaped by a wide array of experiences and roles, each teaching me invaluable lessons about service, compassion, resilience, and empowerment. Leadership, for me, is not about standing above others but standing with others. It is about fostering an environment of mutual respect, encouraging personal growth, and championing collective success. This understanding of leadership doesn't merely make me a title leader but, more importantly, a leader in action. It is these experiences and this mindset that I believe truly characterize me as a leader.
    Lauren Czebatul Scholarship
Embarking on the journey of volunteering has profoundly transformed my perspective on life and my role within the community. The initiation of this voyage began with my service at a local non-profit children's theatre organization. It was there that I first experienced the joy of contribution, of seeing firsthand the impact that one person could make. The laughter, the learning, and the pure, unadulterated joy of the children I interacted with became a beacon guiding my actions, helping me understand the genuine power of altruism. As I moved forward in my volunteer journey, I engaged with the Husky Food Pantry as part of the Leadership Team, working to combat food insecurity on campus. Witnessing the struggles of fellow students, many of whom were trying to concentrate on their studies while grappling with the most basic needs of nutrition, was a sobering experience. It underscored the inextricable link between community welfare and individual success. It taught me that the fight against inequality and basic human rights is fought not just in the grand stages of political discourse but also in the quiet corners of community service. These experiences fundamentally altered my mindset. They made me realize the magnitude of the difference that an individual's efforts can make. They instilled in me a strong sense of social responsibility, empathy, and humility. But perhaps most importantly, they demonstrated the power of collective action, of communities coming together to confront shared challenges. While my volunteering experiences have profoundly impacted me, I find myself in a situation where I am seeking financial assistance to continue my academic journey. My status as a first-generation college student from a single-parent household implies limited resources for financing my education. My mother's tireless efforts have made it possible for me to get this far, but the burden of tuition, books, and living expenses is substantial. This financial strain is a constant concern that often competes with my academic focus. Earning a degree in Advocacy and Public Communication from Northern Illinois University is my goal, and I am committed to this pursuit. However, the financial strain could potentially derail my academic journey. A scholarship would significantly alleviate this burden, enabling me to concentrate fully on my studies and continue to contribute to the university and broader community. It would provide me with the much-needed peace of mind to devote my energy and attention to academic excellence, community service, and leadership roles without the constant worry of financial hardship. My volunteering experiences have transformed my mindset, instilling in me a deep sense of social responsibility, empathy, and an understanding of the power of collective action. Simultaneously, the need for this scholarship is rooted in the financial challenges I face as a first-generation college student from a single-parent household. The financial assistance would ensure the continuation of my academic journey, enabling me to focus on my studies, contribute to the community, and pursue my passion for Advocacy and Public Communication.
Harvey and Geneva Mabry Second Time Around Scholarship
I am an individual deeply committed to learning and personal growth, currently navigating the unique challenges and rewards of being a first-generation college student. Life began for me in a single-parent household, where the enduring values of resilience, perseverance, and hard work were etched into the fabric of my character from a young age. These foundational elements continue to influence my decisions and aspirations, and it was this spirit of indefatigable determination that was the impetus for my decision to pursue higher education. Before embarking on my university journey, I took a significant step in my educational and professional development by earning an Associate's degree and Business Management Certificate from William Rainey Harper. This learning experience was nothing short of transformative. It provided me with invaluable insights into organizational management, strategic decision-making, and leadership principles. But more than that, it sparked a flame within me - an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a realization of the enriching potential of lifelong learning. Emboldened by this newfound aspiration, I embarked on a further academic journey at Northern Illinois University. Here, I am fully immersed in the world of Advocacy and Public Communication as a full-time student. This field, with its promise of effecting change through the powerful tool of communication, strongly resonated with me. It presented an opportunity to intertwine my commitment to social justice with my academic pursuits, to not just learn but to also contribute to shaping societal narratives. While my studies form a core part of my university experience, they are not their entirety. As a student advisor for the NIU Honors Program, I've taken on the rewarding challenge of guiding my peers through their academic journey. This role has provided a platform for me to share the wisdom accumulated through my own experiences, aiding others in navigating the challenges that the academic world often presents. In addition to this, I am honored to serve as the president of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society's Kappa Omega Chapter. As the leader of this esteemed society, I am tasked with overseeing its activities and advocating for the values it holds dear, namely academic excellence, integrity, and mutual respect. Outside the scope of academia and leadership roles, my commitment to service finds expression in my work with the Husky Food Pantry. In my role as part of the Leadership Team, I contribute directly to addressing food security issues within the university community. This initiative aligns strongly with my belief in the power of service and the importance of meeting basic needs to ensure the overall well-being of individuals. Parallel to these roles, I also initiated a column, "Living a Life of Pride," aiming to spotlight and celebrate the remarkable achievements that enrich our diverse society. Through this platform, I have been able to stimulate dialogue, foster understanding, and contribute to an inclusive community. Reflecting on my journey, it is clear that my decision to return to school was fueled by a mix of personal experiences, a drive for service, and a quest for academic excellence. The spark that was ignited during my time at William Rainey Harper has grown into a flame at Northern Illinois University. As I look ahead, I remain focused on leveraging my education and experiences to make a positive impact within my community and beyond.

I am a first-generation college student and I have had to pave my own path when it comes to dealing with milestones in my journey to higher education. I plan to get a degree in Communications with an emphasis on Advocacy and use it to document and report on successful people from underrepresented communities. I believe visibility is paramount and when we showcase individuals we allow them to inspire many who feel that success is not possible.

This past year I ran for student body president at my college. I had an incredible team of students that wanted to help elevate the school and encourage students to stay active in school activities and most importantly stay motivated through everything that is happening in the world right now. My platform was advocacy for student wellness and representation for minorities on campus. As a queer person of color I believe it is important to have representation and my ability be that for someone holds me responsible. We ended up not winning the election, but I saw it as an opportunity. I saw this as an opportunity to use the momentum I had gained in the campaign and put it towards the work I'm putting into my degree. I am working towards a Bachelors in Communication with a minor in Journalism. I want to uplift the queer community and showcase the community however I can. Shortly after the election I started my own column on the school newspaper "Living a Life of Pride". The purpose of the column is direct attention to queer individuals accomplishing great things and contributing to the community. I hope that my work in journalism encourages other queer individuals to work empowering the community.

I recently ran for a student government in my community college. Our opposing ticket made a comment to a member in student government that we were the "gay" ticket. I am an openly trans person who identifies as queer. The other two members of my ticket do not identify the same. I approached the dean about this and then was able to contribute to an article in our newspaper about what had happened. I wanted to make sure that no one was called out of their sexual or gender identity. I believe it's important to educate people when they don't understand the impact of their words. I made sure that the members of my ticket were ok. They were strong supports for me throughout the election and I wanted to make sure that they felt safe.
