Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My experience with mental health has deeply influenced the way I view my goals, relationships, and the world around me. There were seasons in my life where I struggled with anxiety, discouragement, and a lack of direction—but it was in those moments of weakness that I learned to fully rely on God. Through prayer, Scripture, and fellowship, I began to understand that I wasn’t meant to carry my burdens alone. God became my source of strength, clarity, and healing. As I grew spiritually, He began to shape my goals to align with His purpose for my life—particularly the desire to rebuild and restore my community, both mentally and physically. I’ve come to believe that true healing and transformation in a community starts from the inside out, beginning with the heart and mind. Using the wisdom God gives me, I aim to support others who feel lost or broken, just as I once did. I want to be a light in dark places, offering hope to those battling their own mental health challenges. Physically, I’m committed to working on projects that bring beauty, unity, and safety back into my neighborhood—whether through outreach, community clean-ups, or simply showing up for people. My relationships have grown stronger as I’ve learned to love with more compassion and patience, the way Christ loves us. Mental health may have once felt like a barrier, but through God, it has become a bridge to purpose and deeper connection with others.
Sherman S. Howard Legacy Foundation Scholarship
My involvement in my local church has significantly shaped the way I serve and interact with my community. One of the most transformative experiences was when I traveled to Panama City Beach, Florida, stepping out in faith to engage in meaningful conversations about Jesus with individuals who may not yet know Him. This mission trip was more than just a journey to a new place—it was an opportunity to live out the Great Commission and to let God use me as a vessel to share His love and truth. I spoke with people from all walks of life, many of whom were searching for something deeper, and I was able to offer them reassurance of Christ’s unwavering love and grace. While I encountered many fellow believers who encouraged and uplifted me, I also had the incredible privilege of connecting with non-believers. These conversations often started casually but evolved into heartfelt discussions about faith, purpose, and hope. In those moments, I was reminded of the power of planting a seed of faith, even if it’s small, and trusting God to nurture it in His time. I prayed with and for individuals, asking God to water the seeds planted and to reveal Himself in their lives, that they might one day pray to receive Christ themselves. This spirit of outreach and discipleship isn’t limited to mission trips—it’s something I try to live out daily, fueled by my ongoing involvement with my local church. Every Wednesday night, I participate in Bible study, where we dive deeply into the Word of God. These gatherings not only expand my biblical knowledge but also help me grow in my personal relationship with Christ. It is in this setting that I’ve learned how to better articulate my faith, defend biblical truths, and approach conversations about God with love and wisdom. Bible study has also helped me build relationships with others in my church community, which serves as a strong support system and encourages accountability in my walk with Christ. Moreover, I actively invite friends, particularly those who are unsure or unfamiliar with the gospel, to join me at church events and Bible studies. I believe in creating a welcoming environment where questions are encouraged and where people can explore faith without judgment. My goal is to be a bridge between my community and the church—to be someone who walks with others as they begin or continue their spiritual journey. Discipleship is not just about teaching; it’s about walking alongside someone with love, consistency, and grace. Through mission work, regular Bible study, and intentional relationships, my involvement in the local church has empowered me to serve the broader community with humility and purpose. It has taught me that service isn’t just about action—it’s about presence, love, and pointing others toward Christ in every interaction.
