Aloha, My name is John Olubiyi. I was born in Nigeria and moved to England when I was still a baby. I grew up in London with my brother and sister, but we then moved to Virginia when I was 17 to reunite with my dad. My mum and dad were split for many years, but when they got back together, which is why, I had the opportunity to move to America as my dad was a citizen living here already. Shortly after I arrived, we visited one of my uncles, who had served 20+ years in the Navy. We got to hear many great stories about his experiences while he served. Even though he was in the Navy, he highly recommended that my brother and I join the Air Force. We looked deeper into the Air Force, and after a week of contemplating, we both started the process as we decided it would be an excellent opportunity for us. I enlisted in November 2009 and have served in active duty for over 14 years. I initially enlisted to serve only four years, but after three years, I saw myself being able to commit fully to the military lifestyle. The experience has been tremendously rewarding and has taught me life skills that will make me eternally grateful. I have had the opportunity to travel a lot for work and see many parts of the world that I would not have otherwise seen. My parents have been highly supportive of my decision to join the Air Force from the beginning, and I am incredibly grateful for that. I am now embarking on my journey to serve in another capacity in the Air Force. I am currently on the path to getting my degree in 2026 and my commission right after. This will allow me to use all the knowledge and experience I have gained and then apply it while I instruct and serve the next generation of the Air Force. The world is rapidly changing, and the dynamics between America and China are concerning. I can make a positive impact that will be essential for all leaders in the world dynamic that we are entering. I would be incredibly grateful to receive a scholarship, as it would alleviate some of my financial burden of entering school.
