      Neil Margeson Sound Scholarship
Music has been an integral part of my life for the past eleven years. It all began with original soundtracks (OSTs). The first OST I encountered was “Let It Go” from the movie Frozen. After my initial listen, I found myself repeatedly playing and singing it while watching the movie. I even went so far as to learn and perform “Let It Go” in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Malaysian, Italian, and more. In 2014, I transitioned to mainstream music. My first pop music idol was Meghan Trainor. I was captivated by her voice and music when I first heard “Lips Are Movin’.” This discovery led me to fall in love with even more female artists, such as Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, Sofia Carson, Fifth Harmony, Camilla Cabello, Little Mix, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Bea Miller, Isabel LaRosa, Zara Larsson, Marian Hill, Sofi Dossi, Hailee Steinfeld, and many others. In 2017, I stumbled upon one of the most significant music genres that has become my favorite today: K-Pop. While listening to Radio Disney in 2017, I came across “DNA” by BTS. Despite not fully understanding the lyrics due to their Korean language, I was instantly drawn to the exceptional vocal talents of the members and the captivating instrumentals of the song. I was further hooked when I heard the Steve Aoki remixes of “Mic Drop” and “IDOL” in 2018. In 2019, I stumbled upon the girl group BLACKPINK on the platform Radio Disney. I was instantly captivated by their song “Kill This Love.” I eagerly awaited its radio play, and when it finally came on, I couldn’t get enough. I then watched the music video and fell in love with one of the members, then known as Park Chaeyoung MBE, who now performs under the stage name Rosé. BLACKPINK truly ignited my passion for K-Pop. I became fascinated with the members, their backgrounds, and their Instagram accounts. I eagerly purchased their albums and attended their concerts, collecting their lightsticks, which fans bring to the shows. Among all the music genres I enjoy, K-Pop holds a special place in my heart. Listening to K-Pop not only deepened my appreciation for music but also sparked a desire to explore other forms of performance. It inspired me to sing, dance, and even try my hand at rapping. In fact, I have set my sights on releasing an EP in 2025.
