As a Community and Environmental Planning and Sustainability dual major student, sustainability is a major part of my education. Moreover, it is something that I hope to bring in to my profession later on in life through city planning or whichever job I end up in. Aside from the sustainability field which is a given, sustainability should be a priority in city planning as it shapes the future of where we as a society are living. As we all know, our population is starting to move into more urban areas in the world. This puts more pressure for cities to become bigger as they must support a larger volume of people. Because of this, I have taken on projects within my classes focusing on building a sustainable future through urban planning. A project that I am currently taking on has a focus on green infrastructure. I believe that green infrastructure is a major investment cities and towns should start having a heavy focus on. This is because it allows cities to run more efficiently as they use less energy along with dealing with many issues such as stormwater in an efficient way. Along with this, climate change creates more extreme weather patterns. Green infrastructure is one of the best ways to mitigate negative effects from these disastrous events. This is because it can absorb and deal with stormwater during storms, while providing shade, reducing effects of major heat events. Another way I plan to reduce environmental impact through my profession is strengthening the effectiveness of food banks. This will reduce the environmental impact in the city or town I live within as it will reduce food waste. This is a major issue within sustainability as lots of food goes to waste every day in the US. Strengthening the food banks will lead to more food that would otherwise go to waste to be sold to low income people at a reasonable price. This solution "kills two birds with one stone" as it will help decrease food insecurity while also reducing waste. Aside from these larger initiatives, I hope to teach sustainability to the younger generation through community wide forums or events. These will, hopefully, have a lasting impact on young kids who carry on a sustainable life for generations to come. This is something that I was exposed to as a kid living in a rural town in northern New Hampshire and believe would have an effect on anyone else who experiences it.

My interest in the field of sustainability is green infrastructure and green spaces. As my dual major is in Community and Environmental Planning as well as Sustainability, sustainability itself is a major part of my life. What led me to pursue this is that I grew up in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, leading me to having a strong passion for conservation and the environment I live in. I hope to make a positive impact through my education and future work by working with the University of New Hampshire to become more sustainable and to make the city I end up working within more sustainable as well. Here at school, I am part of the Student Senate where I am the Campus Structure Chairperson in which I work with the school and facilities to make infrastructure improvements around the school. This has already lead me to work with facilities to help the school become more sustainable and I hope to work more with them to carry on this work.

Hi, my name is John Micucci and I am a Junior Community and Environmental planning and Sustainability dual major student at the University of New Hampshire. I hope to work within municipal planning, emphasizing community engagements in every aspect I can. Working within the my community and helping others has been woven into my life since I was a kid, which is why I want to carry it into my profession as I carry on in my career. I come from a very small town of about 300 in the northern part of New Hampshire, growing up here community became a major part of who I was as a person. From putting on community dinners at my moms church to helping coach the younger generations in soccer, I have always been helping out the people within my community. One time I have made a positive impact within my community through servitude was when I built a Gaga Pit at my towns local common. A Gaga Pit is an arena for kids to go and play the a game named Gaga Ball. In towns surrounding mine, schools had implemented these in their recreation areas and it seemed that all of the kids really loved the game. This gave me the idea to bring one to my own town. By reaching out to local businesses and working with the town, I raised enough money and got approval to build the Gaga Pit! Next, I worked with a local fabrication company to build the brackets for the arena and worked with a local carpenter to build it. Once the construction was done, I did a small opening for the pit where some local kids came and played Gaga. This project has been standing in my town for four years now and is still used by kids whenever weather permits. This project has also lead me to carry on my servitude in every community I am in. As I am off to college now, I have joined the Student Senate and have become the Campus Structure Chairperson. Within this role I reach out and work with students and faculty to better the physical campus here at UNH. I have written many resolutions and worked with faculty on projects such as better sidewalk conditions for students with disabilities, working on our current student shoveling program with our facilities here at school, and revitalizing our community spaces just to name a few. I believe that I should be considered for the Samuel D. Hartley Memorial Scholarship because I have a love for golf built off of the veterans who have shaped my life. My grandfather who was deployed to the Korean War in the Navy was the person who gave me my love for golf. Although he is too old to go out an play with me now because he is 93, he still comes to the range with me and gives me tips and tricks. When I was a child, he always was out playing golf with his buddies and came back to tell me stories about his golf trips to Florida or Canada. Although he was in his 80s, he loved the game and played as much as he could. Now that I play more, I have come to know all of his old friends at the club where they tell me old stories about him. My grandfather has been a major part of my life as my dad has passed away. Spending most of my free time with my grandfather, I have had the chance to become much closer to him as well as the game of golf. He loves to take me to the range and tell me all of his old stories from when he could go out and giving me tips to help make me better. Now, in college, I try to golf as much as I can which is hard because I live in New Hampshire, but I still go out with my friends and try to call my grandfather after every round because he loves to hear all of my stories like he used to tell me. This full circle moment has been really great for me as it helps me and my grandfather grow closer. It gives us the chance to talk in a way that we may not have been able to previously as he seems more at ease in his aging state. He seems to light up when telling me a story from his time deployed or his time golfing with his old friends. I am so glad to have had the chance to connect with my grandfather through golf as he has grown older and has declined in health. This connection with golf and my grandfather has been the reason that I believe that I should be considered for the Samuel D. Hartley Memorial Scholarship.

Since my father passed away during my sophomore year of high school (2020) because of cancer, I have had to learn lots of things on my own and deal with even more. Once he passed away after having cancer for the third time, I struggled holding together relationships with most people around me and threw myself into school which was hard when all I could focus on was missing my dad. Although this was extremely difficult to cope with this and keep my social and academic career together, with the help of my mom, sister and friends, I kept pushing through and did my best in high school achieving a 4.0 gpa while playing three sports and working a job to help support myself and getting into college where I am now. I believe that the reason I could achieve all of this even after going through the hardest loss of my life is because of the one I lost. My dad was inspired me everyday when I had time with him as he guided me to be the best person I can be. He taught me to be patient, work hard and be kind which are things that he always led me to do by example. First, my father taught me to be patient by making me love hiking. When I was a kid I never liked hiking with him but the more I did it the more I grew to love it. It gave me time to just be with the people I loved as well as teaching me that I have to wait and work to get to the top of my journey. Next, I loved how he showed his passion for hard work as he always preached that it's ok not to do something but if you do choose to do something, you need to put your all into it. This was a mantra he instilled in me which I believe gave me the mindset to put my all into getting to college and perusing a career that I know I can put my all into. Even without him, I think about this everyday as I go out to classes or even to the gym. My dad also instilled the love of simply being kind to others into every day that I live. He truly led by example as whenever I was with him, he showed compassion and caring to everyone he encountered throughout his day. This made me follow in his path, helping me to grow into the person I am today spreading the love he showed to everyone I encounter. Although these are not the only things that I truly loved about my dad, these are the things that I loved about him that have had the most impact on myself.

1.) My name is John Micucci. I live in Northern New Hampshire and am currently attending the University of New Hampshire pursuing a degree in community and environmental planning with a minor in sustainability. 2.)This scholarship will ease the cost of school as UNH has one of the highest in-state tuition across the country and I am paying for my schooling out of pocket. This scholarship will allow me to be more focused on my degree rather than worrying about paying for the degree. 3.) For academic goals, I have been focusing on maintaining a GPA above 3.5. Recently, I have been setting more career goals for myself to set me up for the future. I have been working hard to get an internship with a city planner in New Hampshire who has lots of insight into the industry and who seems like someone I can learn a lot from. This will hopefully lead me to get a job in the field through the connections I will build there. Once I build a good foundation here in New England, I hope to move out west to Oregon or Washington where I hope to keep pursuing city planning as a career. 4.) To contribute to my community, first as a senior in high school, I built a gaga pit where our local summer program is. This is a small, easy-to-play game that kids in the area love. I have also helped coach children's soccer and basketball programs in my hometown. Here at UNH, I have been able to join the student body as a senator. Within the Student Senate, I have joined the Campus Structure which is a board that puts forth resolutions urging the university to build, repair, or update infrastructure around campus. Personally, I have written a resolution to fix a path leading to the gym through a dorm. I have also joined the Health and Wellness board where I am the dining commission chairperson. Here, I get feedback from students about our dining halls and act as a liaison to our chefs, dietitians, and the people who run the retail stores around campus. 5.) A time I have failed was when my father passed away. After this, I seemingly shut down for a few days. I believe this to be a failure because this was a time when my sister and mother needed me most and I couldn't be there for them. From this experience, I learned that even when things get rough, I need to be able to keep moving because the people around me may be counting on me. 6.) I believe my greatest strengths are ambition as I have always gone full throttle when I make the decision to do something, courage, as I always choose to put my first foot forward to make a movement happen when others are scared to, and the ability to make the people around me better. I believe this is one of my greatest strengths because I always try and push the people in my life hard but to a point where it makes them greater and not to a point that makes them hate me and the task they are doing.

Every swing is a lesson in focus, every round an exercise in resilience. My ultimate goal now is to make the golf team at the University of New Hampshire, where I am a student. Being part of a college team would not only push me to refine my skills but also allow me to represent my university with the same pride my grandfather had in his service. If awarded this scholarship, I would be honored to promote the foundation and the veteran community that means so much to me. One way I envision giving back is by organizing a veterans’ golf tournament at my local course. Such an event would serve as a tribute to veterans’ contributions and create an opportunity for people to connect through a shared love of golf. By highlighting the values of resilience, honor, and dedication that veterans embody, I hope to inspire others to support the veteran community in ways both big and small. This would also give veterans from the community to meet outside of the legion and have fun together. As Mr. Goat was drafted in 2003, this has caused many others to be affected by the Akron Hammer in a similar way to me. This has crafted a multitude of players in the league today that have become living legends in the league. My name is John Micucci, and I am a Community and Environmental Planning major with a minor in sustainability student at the University of New Hampshire. With my major, I am interested in multiple career paths, although I am especially interested in landscape architecture in the field of golf course planning and construction. I plan to make a difference in the field of the landscape industry by making the processes of how everything is done more sustainable. I plan to do this by implementing the skills and tools I will acquire through school in this field and pave the way to a more sustainable future for the landscape industry. I am passionate about this field of work because, growing up in northern New Hampshire, I learned the importance of keeping our land healthy. My father who passed away in 2022 (my sophomore year of high school) instilled a passion for keeping the environment around me healthy. This area of study gives me the opportunity to look deeper into how the landscape industry is done, which I can look to improve. I believe that sustainability in the landscape business is critical for protecting natural ecosystems and ensuring that our current interactions with our environment do not jeopardize the health of future generations. Growing up surrounded by New Hampshire's forests, mountains, and waterways, I developed a strong connection to the landscape. This link has given me a responsibility to conserve and improve the natural environment through sustainable activities. Current landscaping practices frequently disregard the long term consequences on soil health, water conservation, and biodiversity. By focusing on long term solutions, we may decrease hazardous chemicals, prevent erosion, and design landscapes that work with nature rather than against it. Furthermore, sustainable landscaping encourages the use of native plants, which benefit local wildlife while reducing the need for frequent watering and upkeep. I am eager to learn how new technologies and environmentally responsible practices may transform the sector, from incorporating renewable energy solutions to encouraging organic land care approaches. Finally, my ambition is to contribute to a future in which landscapes are not only beautiful but also function as functioning ecosystems that support the environment and the communities that rely on it.

My father passed away when I was 15. I am now 19 and have realized how much of a journey I have been through since we found out he had cancer. When we first found out he had cancer for the second time in my life, I couldn't believe it had come back. The pain I knew he would go through tore me apart. Trying to focus on anything other than what was happening at home I wanted to throw myself into school and my extracurricular life. This, however, did not last very long as I soon found out that his cancer was terminal, and we only had a few months left with him. Making an almost full 180-degree turn, I spend all of my extra time with my dad going on hikes, listening to music and going on long drives to talk. This gave me a whole new appreciation for the father I had as I found out so much more about his life as a young man. His stories made me want to be better and put myself into the world being my best self. Eventually, everything started to slow down as his cancer got worse and he could no longer go out and do the things he loved the most like hike and mountain bike. Realizing how hard this would all be for me my dad told me to keep moving because the world wouldn't stop just because of what was happening with him. This caused me to spiral because I realized how little time, I had left with him causing me to turn back to my old ways. Trying my best to get out of the house and "keep moving" like he said, I went on runs every day, tried to stay in town after school for as long as possible and worked hard in school. Although this is what he wanted, this started to make me feel as though I was leaving him behind already as he seemed gone already in my mind. Making yet another realization, I spent the last few weeks spending all of my time with my dad trying to make the best of it. Then it happened. I woke up to get ready for school and my mom walked into my room to tell me that he had passed away in his sleep. After spending the day with my family, I remembered his words, "Just keep going" echoing in my head over and over again. Although it has been a hard few years, I have always remembered my father as one of the most amazing people. He gave me so much in my life including the best advice I have ever received which was to keep moving even if you have to slow everything down because everything else will keep moving around you. This has made me grow into the person I am today because I have learned to look at the bigger picture and see that even if there is a roadblock, I must work through it to see the other side.
