Hi, my name is John Thompson and my biggest achievement that I'm most proud of is being able to get recruited to play D1 golf at Howard University. This achievement has meant the most to me due to the fact that I was a late bloomer in junior golf. I had to make some big decisions to get to this point so I could realize my ultimate dream which is being on the PGA Tour. The path to playing competitive golf hasn't been the easiest. I started playing golf at an early age due to my father's interest in the sport. In the beginning, I played other sports like basketball, flag football, and teeball but when I turned 13 years of age, I went all in on golf. I am very thankful that my parents supported me 100% because without them, I wouldn't have been able to participate. Golf is one of the most expensive sports around and as you get older it does not get any cheaper. My commitment to practicing every day really made a big difference in my skillset and mindset. I spent long hours at the golf course to refine my skills to be able to compete with some of the other junior golfers. I had to do a really good job of balancing education and golf because I spent so much time at the golf course. The dedication paid off because I will start my freshman year this fall in Washington, DC. I'm so looking forward to playing in college this year as it's been a life long dream of mine. The competitiveness is going to be off the charts this year since I'm 1 of 6 new players coming in. We will have 12 players competing for 5 travel spots and that's not going to be easy. I really feel college golf will get me ready for professional golf in the future. I have heard that the training schedule is rigorous, such as the 6am workouts and the travel schedule that demands that I spend days away from school week after week. For those reasons, it will be very important for me to master the art of time management and prioritize these responsibilities. In closing, I am inspired by many PGA golfers that have come before me such as Calvin Peete, Charlie Sifford, Jim Thorpe and Lee Elder. I will remain committed to the journey and hopefully I will inspire others that are willing to take this journey as well. I have learned that true achievement will come from my dedication to the sport and my belief that I can achieve what I set out to do.

The one way that I've participated in helping the local community is through the 1st Tee program. As a young junior golfer, I've always tried to find a way to give back to anyone that is getting started in the game of golf. Not only does the 1st tee program teach beginners the game of golf, it also teaches many life skills. Some of the key life skills that the program teaches is respect, responsibility and perseverance. It also teaches togetherness because all of the sessions that we have with the program are group sessions. Another aspect of the 1st Tee Program that I really appreciate is the fact that if you don't have the essentials to play golf, you will be given equipment to use throughout the program. Because golf is a very expensive sport, not everyone will be able to afford the necessities. One way that we can make the community better for future generations is to expand and grow the game of golf through diverse communities. By expanding the 1st tee program, the program can focus on fitness, other sports and maybe even offer the program to adults as well. The sky's the limit with this program and it will lead to future generations having a much brighter future. Thanks 1st Tee!

I can remember putting Jesus first when I was 10 years old. I was baptized at my church, Shandon Baptist Church in Columbia, SC by Pastor Dick Lincoln who has now retired. What made it so special that my sister and I were baptized the same day. This decision has really impacted my life in many ways. By being closer to Jesus, I have been blessed with many opportunities in my life. Starting with my education, I was given the opportunity by the principal at Spring Valley High School to be able to get out of school around midday to work on my golf game. At the time, I felt as though I needed the extra time to work on my golf game to improve a little faster. I started putting in 4 to 5 hours a day and boy was that a great decision for my golf. Just to name a few opportunities, I was able to shoot a segment with Tiger Woods that featured on the PGA Tour down in Port St. Lucie, FL. I was also afforded the opportunity to play on The Underrated Tour, sponsored by Steph Curry. We have played tournaments at some really great golf courses across the country. Another great opportunity that I had, Michael Jordan asked me to come to his golf course twice and he had one of his golf directors to assess my golf skills. According to MJ, I'm in the pool of Jordan brand golfers for future consideration. All in all I feel like giving my life to Jesus has spring boarded my future in golf. The way that I plan to keep living by these important principles in the future is by focusing on kindness, respect and honesty. That is the least I can do with all the blessings that I have been given.

I became interested in cybersecurity in high school. It's a field that captured my attention because I love to problem solve. If I can't figure something out, it kind of eats at me until I can come up with a solution. Since elementary school, I have won several technology awards for being the most techy person in my class. I have had teachers tell me that I'm going to go on to do something great in this world. I would love to learn how to protect computers against attacks. You hear on the news all the time how hackers get into files and steal personal information every day. I think every company out there will heavily rely on information security to keep their clients information private. To me cyber security is an essential safe haven that we cannot live without. My ultimate goal is to one day say I had a hand in the development of security for the information highway. After college, I plan to pursue a career on the PGA Tour, if that doesn't work out, cybersecurity will be my backup plan. My plan is to play golf until the age of 27, after that go into the computer field to help protect information for major corporations. My connection to the military is my grandfather serving in the Army for several years at the very young age of 20. I can't thank him enough for helping to keep the United States safe from attacks that could possibly destroy our country's freedom. While serving in Vietnam he told about the harsh conditions that he had to face. I really consider my grandfather to be the bravest individual that I know for putting his life on the line. Whenever Veteran's Day or Memorial Day comes around throughout the year, I like to call my grandfather and thank him for his service. I really think the United States should find more ways to thank the soldiers who have fought to protect our country but that's another story for another day. Today my grandfather is retired and enjoying the fruits of his labor. Even though most of his friends have passed on, he's still hanging in there. He just turned 75 yesterday and is showing no signs of slowing down after serving his time in the military and working a corporate job for 38 years. I'm proud to say he's my grandfather.

I feel like Dual Enrollment and AP classes have prepared me because these classes are simply the most difficult courses that I've ever taken. You have to study and work hard if you are going to get good grades in these types of classes. I have worked extremely hard to maintain a 3.8 average while playing a varsity golf for the past five years. Taking AP classes has taught me that it's important to balance my time between studying and playing varsity golf. I've had some late nights doing homework and studying for quizzes and tests. I really feel like AP classes prepare you me for the real world. Dual enrollment, I feel like this opting in high school has given me a jump start on my college career. There is nothing better than earning college credits while still in high school. Being a part of dual enrollment while in high school it shows me that I can actually succeed in both environments. While in high school, you get a real feel of what it's going to be like in college. Also, while in these dual enrollment classes you spend a lot of time with people that come from all types of nationalities. So you must watch how you treat people and show that you are actually nice. Most of my assignments have been group sessions so you have to learn how to collaborate. Being nice has always been a part of my nature. My parents taught me very well, so it's a part of my DNA. Unfortunately my parents have spent a lot of money for my junior golf career and It has limited my path to higher education, but I'm sure they wouldn't have done anything different. With tournament registration, hotel expenses, equipment, coaching, meals and country club dues, it has really hindered my parents opportunity to be able to afford college. College is very expensive annually and with athletic and FAFSA scholarships it's still not enough to cover the full tuition and board. In order to get my degree, I know it will require more scholarships and assistance to realize my dreams of getting a degree in cybersecurity and playing division one college golf. If this scholarship is awarded to me, it would mean so much to me and my family. Thank you for the opportunity to share my story with you and my commitment to education and division one sports.

1. Outside of golf I really don't have any extracurricular activities. I'm so dedicated to golf right now. My goal is one day make it to the PGA Tour if God is willing. From an early age, i have been dedicated to golf. I've always felt like I was a little behind other really good junior golfers and I've needed to work extra hard. So my parents set up my schedule so that I could get out of school early. My school schedule allows me to get out of school around midday and I usually get to the course around 2pm. I get to the course and I have a practice schedule that I follow. I work on putting, short game, irons and my tee shots. I know there is very small percentage of players that make it on the tour but I'm really in it win it. I also make sure my fitness, nutrition and mental perfomance is all a part of daily routine. With passion and hard work, I know this mission can be accomplished. 2. I am very interested in studying cybersecurity at Howard University. It's a field that captures my attention because I love to problem solve. If I can't figure something out, it kind of eats at me until I can come up with a solution. Since elementary school, I have won several technology awards for being the most techy person in my class. I would love to learn how to protect computers against attacks. I think every company out there heavily relies on information security to keep their clients information private. 3. I plan on giving back the community in many ways when I graduate from college. I hold this value dear to my heart because so many people having given to me. One way that I plan on giving back is to do golf clinic once a year to minority children to introduce them to the game of golf. Not only do I want to teach children the game of golf, but also provide with life values, such as patience, focus and discipline. Golf has been very good to me and provided me with countless opportunities. I've had an opportunity to meet Tiger Woods, Steph Curry, Michael Jordan and many others. I have also been some golf courses that many will never get an opporunity, such as Ohoopee Golf Club, Congaree Golf Club, Old Barnwell Golf Club, Forest Lake Golf Club, Chambers Bay, and many others. 4. The Hulede Collegiate Golf Scholarship will provide me with much needed funding for college. To go along with athletic and academic monies this will help cover a good portion of my tuition and expenses. I also feel like this scholarship will also give hope to future minority golfers that will come behind me. This scholarship will help reduce the financial burden that my parents may not be able to fill. They have provided me with the financial backing for over 10 years in the game golf. As we all know, golf is a very expensive game and it will exhaust you financially.

Golf has always been more than just a sport for me; it has been a journey filled with challenges, growth, and friendships. My journey in junior golf began when I was 3 years old. I was introduced to the game by my father, who often played on the weekends. Initially, the sport seemed very hard, but my father patiently taught me the basics of swinging and putting. As I practiced, I realized that golf required not only physical skills but also mental strength. This realization motivated me to improve continuously. Throughout my junior years, I participated in various local tournaments. These competitions were crucial because they pushed me to step out of my comfort zone. I vividly remember my first tournament, where nerves overwhelmed me. However, as I started getting better, I gained confidence. Each tournament brought new lessons, often teaching me humility and resilience. Losing was a part of the game, but it provided me with opportunities to analyze my performance and identify areas for improvement. Beyond personal growth, my journey in junior golf has impacted others as well. Through my involvement in local junior golf programs, I had the chance to mentor younger players at the First Tee of Columbia. These experiences were both rewarding and enlightening. Guiding younger golfers through their early challenges reminded me of my own journey. I shared tips and tricks that I acquired over time, helping them build their confidence. Watching them improve and achieve their own milestones brought great joy to me and reinforced the importance of community support in sports. Moreover, junior golf has fostered friendships that have lasted beyond the golf course. Competing alongside peers who share the same passion helped me build a sense of camaraderie. We celebrated each other’s successes and provided encouragement during tough times. The bonds formed through shared experiences in tournaments and practice sessions have taught me valuable lessons in teamwork and mutual respect. In conclusion, my journey in junior golf has been a significant part of my life, shaping my character and influencing those around me. It has taught me the value of hard work, persistence, and the power of community. As I continue to play, I remain dedicated to giving back and inspiring others to become involved in golf. The sport's life lessons extend far beyond the fairways and greens, making it a pivotal aspect of my personal development and a source of positive influence for others.

I should be chosen for the Samuel D. Hartley Memorial scholarshp because of my passion for golf. To be honest, golf is my life (and eating). My love for golf is something I could never put into simple terms. Golf is something I can put hours and hours into and not get tired of it. There is always something new you can try to accomplish in golf. I first picked up a club around the age of 3 but didn't truly start playing tournaments until the age of 8. I didn't want to put in the work to get better for a very long time due to me being super lazy. Then Covid hit. There was not much to do except play video games at that time. Then my dad mentioned going to practice at the golf course, since that was really the only thing you could do according to the social distancing protocol. I noticed I was super behind and needed to catch up in order to compete on a high level. After playing in several tournaments, I knew I needed to start getting better because I realized I hated losing. Currently, I am still slightly behind in relation to some of the junior golfers. I put in hours of work, but it's not enough. I have made vast improvements over the past few years. My course management, consistency, attitude, and thinking is so much better now. I can see and hit the shot. I hate seeing myself not at the number one spot wherever I go. But at the end of the day, I can't do anything but go right back to the golf course and trust that everything will come together soon. Everytime I go to play a tournament, I see the potential and I see what could be. I want that to become a reality so bad. I know it will happen soon. I go to sleep thinking about what I could have done a little bit differently in my last tournament. I need to go to a tournament thinking I am going to absolutely crush the field. With this being my senior year, I just want to play the best golf of my life. I just have to be patient and have fun in the process. Sometimes I get fixated on looking into the future. Often I think about holding up the winning trophy or giving my winning speech. In the future, I will be a much better player than what I am now. My future with golf will be amazing and I can feel it. I hope to attend a great university where I can prosper, learn and grow. My dream is to be on the PGA Tour and my end goal is to be a part of the golf Hall of Fame. It will come true. There are bound to be trials and tribulations. It's how you persevere and never give up that determines how your journey will turn out. I know this will not be an easy journey but the small victories and seeing myself getting better everyday is what keeps me going. “I'm proud of you” and “Don't worry, you will do better next time” are statements that I hear a lot. I can't do anything but thank my family and friends for believing in me even when I lose or don't believe in myself. I am ready to face the future with nothing but perseverance and certainty while pursuing my dream, one swing at a time.

The biggest lesson that I have learned from junior golf is the importance of discipline and focus, which can be effectively applied to a career in cybersecurity. This lesson will have valuable implications for building a successful professional life, especially in fields that demand precision, critical thinking, and continuous improvement. In junior golf, maintaining discipline is essential for improvement and success. As a young golfer I had to adhere to a rigorous practice schedule that required commitment and self-control. I developed routines that helped me to home my skills, such as perfecting my swing and increasing my short game accuracy. This discipline built resilience and taught me the importance of consistent effort in achieving my goals. Similarly, in the cybersecurity field, professionals must remain disciplined in adhering to protocols, policies, and best practices. Cybersecurity is ever-evolving, and maintaining discipline in staying updated with the latest technologies, threats, and defenses is crucial for safeguarding sensitive information. Focus is another critical lesson derived from my junior golf that translates directly to a cybersecurity career. In golf, maintaining concentration is vital, especially during competitive play. A slight lapse in focus can result in a poor performance or unnecessary mistakes. For example, as a junior golfer I must remain mentally sharp to judge the wind, understand the terrain, and calculate their shots accurately. This focus is equally important in cybersecurity, where distractions can lead to overlooking potential vulnerabilities or threats. A cybersecurity professional must concentrate on analyzing data, identifying anomalies, and swiftly responding to security breaches. This heightened attention to detail can make the difference between effectively mitigating an attack and experiencing a significant security breach. Additionally, as a junior golf I was taught the value of learning from mistakes. Each missed shot or lost tournament provides an opportunity for reflection and growth. Golfers often review their performance to identify areas for improvement, fostering a growth mindset. In a similar vein, cybersecurity experts must analyze incidents post-attack to understand how security failures occurred and how to prevent them in the future. The ability to learn from past experiences enhances knowledge and strategies in both fields. In conclusion, the discipline, focus, and ability to learn from mistakes learned through junior golf are invaluable traits in a cybersecurity career. These qualities foster a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous improvement. As cybersecurity threats become more sophisticated, professionals with these characteristics will be better equipped to protect systems and data, ultimately contributing to a safer digital environment.

With the right tools and mindset, students can succeed on the SAT and take a significant step towards their academic goals.

Personal development is something that has always been important to me. I believe that in order to become the best version of myself, I need to constantly be working on improving my skills, mindset, and overall well-being. There are many ways that I work on my personal development, but three methods that I find particularly effective are reading, meditation, and coaching. Reading is one of my favorite ways to learn and grow. I make it a point to read a variety of books on personal development, psychology, self-improvement, and success. These books provide me with valuable insights, strategies, and ideas that I can incorporate into my own life. Reading helps me to expand my knowledge, challenge my beliefs, and gain new perspectives. It also allows me to learn from the experiences of others and apply their wisdom to my own journey of personal development. Meditation is another powerful tool that I use to work on my personal development. Meditation helps me to quiet my mind, reduce stress, and increase my focus and clarity. It also allows me to connect with my inner self, identify my goals and values, and align my actions with my true desires. By practicing meditation regularly, I am able to cultivate mindfulness, self-awareness, and emotional resilience. This helps me to navigate challenges, make better decisions, and live a more balanced and fulfilling life. Finally, coaching has been instrumental in my personal development journey. I work with a coach who helps me to set goals, create action plans, and overcome obstacles. My coach provides support, accountability, and feedback that keeps me motivated and on track. They challenge me to stretch beyond my comfort zone, confront my limiting beliefs, and unlock my full potential. Through coaching, I have been able to make significant progress in various areas of my life, such as improving my relationships, enhancing my communication skills, and pursuing my passions. In conclusion, personal development is a priority for me, and I am committed to continuously improving myself. By engaging in activities like reading, meditation, and coaching, I am able to enhance my knowledge, well-being, and effectiveness. These practices not only help me to grow personally and professionally but also empower me to create a life that is meaningful, purposeful, and fulfilling. I encourage my fellow high school students to explore different methods of personal development and find what works best for them. Remember, the journey of personal growth is ongoing, and the rewards are limitless.

Steph Curry is my favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA because he is not only an incredibly talented basketball player, but also a great role model both on and off the court. One of the things I admire most about Steph Curry is his work ethic. He is known for his dedication to his craft and his commitment to constantly improving as a player. Despite being one of the best shooters in NBA history, Curry is always looking for ways to get better and push himself to new heights. As a high school student, this is something that I find truly inspiring. It reminds me that hard work and determination are the keys to success, no matter what your goals may be. Off the court, Steph Curry is also a great role model for young athletes like myself. He is actively involved in charitable work and is a vocal advocate for important issues such as education and social justice. Curry uses his platform as a professional athlete to make a positive impact in his community and beyond, and this is something that I greatly admire. Overall, Steph Curry is not just a great basketball player, but a great person as well. From his work ethic and leadership on the court to his philanthropy and advocacy off the court, Curry embodies the qualities of a true role model. Cheering for him on Team USA is always a thrill, and I am proud to support such a talented and inspiring athlete.

Although I am a die-hard LeBron James fan, I cannot deny the fact that Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. LeBron James may be an amazing player with numerous accolades and achievements, but when it comes to comparing him to Michael Jordan, there is just no competition. Michael Jordan defined the game of basketball in ways that no other player has been able to do. He won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and was named the NBA Finals MVP in all six of those championship victories. LeBron James, on the other hand, is a phenomenal player in his own right. His combination of size, strength, and skill has allowed him to dominate the NBA for over a decade. LeBron has won four NBA championships and has been named the NBA Finals MVP on four occasions as well. Despite LeBron's impressive resume, he still falls short when compared to the greatness of Michael Jordan. Jordan's six championships speak volumes about his ability to lead his team to victory when it mattered most. His killer instinct and competitive drive are unmatched, and he was able to elevate his game to a level that few players have ever reached. As much as I love LeBron James and appreciate all that he has done for the game of basketball, I have to give credit where credit is due. Michael Jordan will always be remembered as the greatest basketball player of all time, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players for years to come.

As a high school student, pursuing higher education can be a challenging journey filled with obstacles. For me, one of the biggest obstacles I have had to overcome is the lack of resources and support for my interest in cyber security. Despite facing these challenges, I am determined to use my education in this field to give back to my community in the future. Cyber security is a crucial aspect of our modern world, with cyber attacks becoming increasingly prevalent and sophisticated. As technology continues to advance, the need for skilled professionals in cyber security will only grow. However, many students, especially those in underserved communities like mine, may not have access to the resources or support needed to pursue a career in this field. One of the main obstacles I have faced in my pursuit of higher education in cyber security is the lack of resources available to me. My school does not offer any courses or programs related to cyber security, and there are limited opportunities for me to learn about this field outside of school. Additionally, there is a lack of guidance and support for students interested in pursuing a career in cyber security, making it difficult for me to know where to start and how to navigate the complex world of cyber security. Despite these challenges, I am determined to overcome them and use my education in cyber security to give back to my community in the future. I believe that by gaining knowledge and skills in this field, I can help protect individuals and organizations from cyber threats and contribute to making the online world a safer place for everyone. In order to achieve this goal, I plan to seek out opportunities to learn more about cyber security outside of school, such as online courses, workshops, and internships. I also hope to connect with professionals in the field who can serve as mentors and provide guidance as I pursue my education in cyber security. Furthermore, I plan to use my education in cyber security to give back to my community by raising awareness about the importance of cyber security and providing support to those who may not have access to resources or knowledge in this field. I hope to volunteer my time and skills to help individuals and organizations protect themselves from cyber threats and empower them to navigate the digital world safely. In conclusion, while pursuing higher education in cyber security may come with its own set of challenges, I am committed to overcoming these obstacles and using my education to give back to my community in the future. By gaining knowledge and skills in cyber security, I hope to make a positive impact and contribute to a safer and more secure online world for everyone.
