Hello, my name is John Macaluso Vosganian and I am pursuing a career in engineering. I have been interested in engineering ever since I can remember but became truly passionate about it after my family’s home was affected by superstorm Sandy. I live on a barrier island and the whole town was greatly affected by the storm. After witnessing all the devastation around me I became very curious as to how this all had happened and if it could have been prevented in some way. Or was there a way to build the homes and structures differently so the loss would not occur again in the future? In the months and years following the storm, I watched many houses get raised and rebuilt. My Interest and passion for engineering continued to peak as I observed all the construction around me. I wanted to know more, questions such as how did the homes get redesigned and how raising that home affected the property around it, kept coming into my young mind. I wanted to know about the equipment used in rebuilding the homes, I wanted to know about how the homes would stand up to flooding or wind should another storm like Sandy happen again. All this drove my interest and passion for what I would eventually find out was the study of engineering.
Other passions of mine include volunteering my time towards things like beach cleanups and raising donations for the local food pantry. I am a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Key Club. Both of which have volunteering as a major part of what we do. I love the feeling I get when I can help others through my time and efforts.

I have anxiety disorder, OCD and hypoglycemia, as well as being a perfectionist. This all started at a very young age and took a long time to diagnose. I was scared of everything I had so many fears, I was always stressed out and worried. I got tested for everything but nothing matched up. I was just so emotional and nervous. I was extremely hard on myself, no one could understand, I was healthy and extremely smart, kind and other kids loved me. Having these issues kept me from enjoying life, trying new things, and being a part of it all. I only wanted to be with my family. I was in Scouting from first grade to tenth, I participated in everything with great stress, I don’t think in my early years I really enjoyed myself. For grammar school I went to West elementary and my early years were very stressful, but they never gave up on me. My teachers and the vice principle were so patient and kind, even though I had these issues they believed I was destined for greatness, I just needed love and support. They made sure I was prepared for middle school. The people of West School were an amazing support system. When I got to middle school this was where I really started to turn my life around for the better. In sixth grade we figured out what my ailments were and I moved forward, although for me change was still scary. The biggest thing that changed for me was going on the Frost Valley trip. That was the first step in turning my life around for the better. I began to trust and believe I could do anything and actually enjoy my life, Long Beach Middle School really gave me the tools I needed to grow.
I have been interested in engineering ever since I can remember but became truly passionate about it after my family’s home was affected by Superstorm Sandy. I wanted to know if there was anything that could have been done to shield us from the effects of the storm. After witnessing all the devastation to our home and our neighbors I became very curious as to how this all had happened and if it could have been prevented in some way. Or at least was there a way to build the homes and structures differently so the loss would not occur again in the future? This scholarship will help me and my family in many ways. It could ease the burden of rising financial costs of education and allow me to pursue my dream of an engineering degree. My father was laid off for two years during COVID and we are still recovering from the financial hit that took on the family. So the scholarship money will be very important in allowing me to pay for all the costs of college.

A pattern of kindness I have shown in my life would be my history of volunteering to my community. Since I was very young my parents have always encouraged me to volunteer my time to the
community. My first foray into volunteering was while I was in Cub Scouts.
We would organize food drives at local grocery stores. These drives were for Thanksgiving meals for those in need in my community. I remember we would ask people to contribute to the drive then we would take all the donations back to a school and box them. I was always amazed at how much we collected over the several weekends we worked the drive. It felt very fulfilling to know we were helping people who truly needed our aid. It was a feeling I didn’t really get from anything else I did and it made me want to do more.
As time went on I sought out more opportunities to volunteer. In 2017 I worked with Waves Of Hope USA which was a grassroots effort to help victims from Texas who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Together we gathered, packed, wrapped, and loaded three 53 foot semi trucks filled with donations of everything from water to diapers and much more. We also collected $38,900 in gift cards that went straight into the hands of Harvey victims.
During Christmas I spent time, again with Waves Of Hope, taking toy donations for victims of the California wildfires. We organized, wrapped and labeled thousands of toys and loaded them on a semi truck. Again the feeling was amazing knowing I was helping others in need. I also
volunteered as a server at a Thanksgiving meal given for those in need in the community. It was very fulfilling spending a portion of my Thanksgiving day serving others.
Of all the volunteer efforts I have done there are two I am particularly proud of. Those are two that I organized. One was a beach clean up that was ongoing for a year. I would collect bottles and cans from my local beach and neighboring streets and then redeem the deposits on them. I would use the money from the bottles and cans to buy food for my local food pantry. Over the course of the year I collected over 1000 bottles and cans and was able to use the money redeemed to help some people who were in need. The second effort was a drive for a local animal rescue shelter called Posh Pets. They needed blankets, sheets and towels so I began reaching out to people along with some help from my mother we used facebook and instagram to call people to action. I let them know I was collecting donations for the shelter and the donations began to pour in. We collected and brought to the shelter over 300 blankets sheets and towels. The people at the shelter were so appreciative of what I had done and again I felt great being able to help.
Over the years I have volunteered for food drives, clothing drives, suicide awareness efforts, beach clean ups, toy drives, salvation army collections, I have worked with children at town festivals, volunteered as a server and have delivered meals. It has given me great pride to be a part of so many community service efforts.
In college I hope to continue my volunteering and hope to find even more opportunities to volunteer my time in new and fulfilling ways.

I began to trust and believe I could do anything and actually enjoy my life, Long Beach Middle School really gave me the tools I needed to grow. Even in eighth and ninth grade in the pandemic being isolated and on remote learning for two years I was able to move forward in a positive way. I took a negative and instead of breaking down I was positive and was very successful on remote learning. I even did community service during that horrific time in our lives. I walked into tenth grade as the first time in high school a little nervous but my tools I had learned really helped me. I joined Student Org, Key Club , Sophomore Club, and Robotics and by eleventh grade I was inducted into the National Honor Society. Now I try new things, I go on trips, I am Independent and my anxiety, OCD, hypoglycemia and perfectionism don’t get the best of me. I have always loved my academics and have always worked hard but the difference now is I overcame the obstacles that kept me from enjoying life. I have learned my needs, have them in place along with tools to overcome my ailments and have turned my life around for the better.

Redefining Victory Scholarship
Hi my name is John James and one of my true passions is volunteering. For me success is being able to give back to your community and having the time to pursue something you are passionate about. I spend a fair amount of time volunteering and I deeply love the feeling I get when I know I have helped others. Since I was very young my parents have always encouraged me to volunteer my time to the community. My first foray into volunteering was while I was in Cub Scouts. We would organize food drives at local grocery stores. These drives were for Thanksgiving meals for those in need in my community. I was always amazed at how much we collected over the several weekends we worked the drive. It felt very fulfilling to know we were helping people who truly needed our aid. It was a feeling I didn’t really get from anything else I did and it made me want to do more.
Over the past four years I have done lots of community service. I have done walks for suicide prevention, participated in raising money for the polar bear plunge. I have visited nursing facilities and handed out valentines day cards. I collected food for the Key Club Food Pantry. I have participated in toy drives. Volunteered at clothing drives where I sorted and folded the clothes took people to what they wanted and broke down after we were done. I worked with children at the fall festival doing crafts and I have volunteered my time as a tutor.
Of all the volunteer efforts I have done there are two I am particularly proud of. Those are two that I organized. One is a beach clean up that is still ongoing. I collect bottles and cans from my local beach and neighboring streets and then redeem the deposits on them. I use the money from the bottles and cans to buy food for my local food pantry. Over the course of the project I have collected over 1500 bottles and cans and was able to use the money redeemed to help some people who were in need. The second effort is a drive for a local animal rescue shelter called Posh Pets. They needed blankets, sheets and towels so I began reaching out to people along with some help from my mother we used Facebook and Instagram to call people to action. I let them know I was collecting donations for the shelter and the donations began to pour in. So far we have collected and brought to the shelter over 300 blankets sheets and towels. The people at the shelter have been so appreciative of what I have done and again I felt great being able to help.
This opportunity will help me achieve success as I see it by easing the burden of financial strain as I move forward with my education. Which In turn will give me more time to seek further ways of volunteering my time.

I am in the full International Baccalaureate program at my school which is a college level program.
My future plans are to go on to college and study engineering. Ever since I was a little boy I have always been fascinated with engineering. I am In the robotics club at school and I hope to go on to work in that field. In 2028 I see myself either having a job in the field of robotics engineering or trying for a masters degree in robotics.

Hi my name is John James and I am in the special education department at my high school. The teacher in charge Mrs Fee and the principle Mrs. Schnieder and the rest of West were an amazing support system. I have a passion for volunteering.
My dream for my future is to educate myself in engineering and specifically robotics. I hope to go on to pursue a career in the field of robotics and this scholarship will help me move forward with that goal as it will help cover the increasing costs of higher education.

In the months and years following the storm, I watched many houses get raised and rebuilt. My Interest and passion for engineering continued to peak as I observed all the construction around me. I wanted to know more, questions such as how did the homes get redesigned and how raising that home affected the property around it, kept coming into my young mind. I wanted to know about the equipment used in rebuilding the homes, I wanted to know about how the homes would stand up to flooding or wind should another storm like Sandy happen again. All this drove my interest and passion for what I would eventually find out was the study of engineering.

Met Gala Masterpiece Scholarship
My favorite Met Gala theme was Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy, this theme was from 2008. I think this is a fantastic theme for a fashion gala as superheroes are so embedded in pop culture, and it is truly the outfits that make them stand out. Superheroes are our modern day myths and are a very important feature to the culture of our society. I love this theme personally as I am really into anime and feel comic book superheroes are just as relevant. I believe it was very bold of the Met to put this forward as a theme as it is both fun and relevant but not necessarily something you might expect from a museum such as the Met. There are many standout outfits from that year and some were even reminiscent of a more villainous side. As I researched I enjoyed the outfits for Nicki Minaj who won a low cut corset and a long black and red cape. She reminded me of a evil villain even perhaps a superhero who turned to the dark side. Zoe Kravitz wore a baby pink dress which had a sheen to it with black embellishments and a huge pick matching cape. Zoe was definitely representing the forces of good in her outfit. Riley Keough wore a military styled outfit and was in black and red like Nicki Minaj. Her dress was adorned with chains and a full length double zipper which ran down the middle front of the dress. Model Lily Aldridge wore a long cape and white dress with a very interesting cut for the top. her red spandex leggings reminded of classic heroes like Wonder Woman. Emily Ratajkowski wore a gown that hugged her body and reminded of the X-men villain Mystique. Priyanka Chopra wore a gown that was very much like a trench coat and looked like a detective. perhaps it is her alter ego civilian personality of her superhero persona. I think the best of that year was from Cara Delevingne a model who wore an icy, tight suite and had her hair done in almost a silver dome fashion. The neckline was plunging and is accented with a belt. What a fantastic outfit for a superhero themed Gala although she definitely looked more along the villain side of the law. One outfit that missed the mark was worn by Christy Turlington. This very simple plain red dress really did not speak to the theme at all.

Hi my name is John James and I have anxiety disorder, OCD and hypoglycemia, as well as being a perfectionist. Mrs Fee and Mrs. Schnieder and the rest of West were an amazing support system.
I exemplify agape love by having a deep and meaningful relationship with god and also feel a profound love for my fellow man. I give back to my community in many ways.
Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship
Hello, my name is John Macaluso Vosganian and I plan to make a positive impact in the world by pursuing my a career in engineering. my hope is to make environments and structures safer in the future. I have been interested in engineering ever since I can remember but became truly passionate about it after my family’s home was affected by Superstorm Sandy. I wanted to know if there was anything that could have been done to shield us from the effects of the storm. I live on a barrier island and the whole town was greatly affected by the storm. After witnessing all the devastation to our home and our neighbors I became very curious as to how this all had happened and if it could have been prevented in some way. Or at least was there a way to build the homes and structures differently so the loss would not occur again in the future?
I hope you will consider me for your very generous scholarship and I thank you very much for your time.

Anime Enthusiast Scholarship
I love anime I got into it because of my brother he was really into it and encouraged me to join him in watching. Over time I developed my own love of anime. Of all the anime I watch I would have to say the one I can watch over and over again, the one that resonates with me the most is Jojos Bizarre Adventure. I love it because of its anthology aspect how its about a family of characters each generation embed with particular powers. It also takes place in many different parts of the world and in many different time lines. For example part one takes place in victorian era England and part six taking place in Florida 2011. This also goes into different genres though it is always action and adventure it also spans slice of life (Part 4) as well as gangster/mob theme (Part 5). This is not something that is often scene in anime It also has some outrageous fight scenes that make you think. It is also very memorable from the battles cries to the stands to the entire character of Dio Brando! Jojo is the epitome of the word iconic! Thank you Hirohiko Araki for creating your magnum opus!!!!!!!!!!!!!
