Born and raised in Washington D.C. I want to work for the World Health Organization to help detect and prevent the spread of future pandemics. My greatest passion is to help make a better world and future for our children and children's children. I'm a great candidate because I'm a retired veteran 23 years (7+ years Army and 16 years Air Force) that knows all about service before self and devoted work for a successful team effort. Pelipost Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
Dear Scholarship, My experiences with mental health have influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations in the most unanticipated ways! One of my beliefs is that mental health is very complex in that there is no one size fits all. The perception of what mental health is or should be may be quite skewed. Having multiple family and friends from multiple generations with mental health challenges has enforced the concept that it is indiscriminate and may manifest from mild to severe depending on the individual. My relationships with family and friends with mental health challenges has had a profound impact on how we interact. For example, my sister has had mental health challenges that are inundated with verbal and physical triggers that could ignite into a spontaneous fit of instant rage and conflict. To witness mental health degradation of a loved one to any degree can be one of the most heart wrenching situations one may encounter. It took many years of very challenging support to help encourage my sister to accept the medical attention she needed and required to steer her on the best road toward recovery of her sanity and her life. The very deliberate and enduring support for my sister’s adversity was finally achieved this past year which enabled her regain visitation with her son, reclaim her life, and re-engage with family. I have observed numerous instances in which mental health, in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, has detrimentally impacted not only Americans, but people all over the globe. This motivated me to want to do all I can to fight for humanity by supporting efforts to combat mental health challenges. My chosen approach to fight for humanity is pursuing a Masters of Public Health (MPH). Upon completion of my MPH, I will seek opportunities within the Department of Health and Human Services along with the World Health Organization. My desire is to positively impact mental health worldwide on a global platform. The experience I hope to gain and the contributions I hope to make will be a large part of the support mechanism for me to eventually pursue a PhD in Epidemiology. I not only want to help humanity; I also want to inspire and teach those that come after me in hopes that we all will make this world a better place together. Providing health education to others is way to help others and my self. I subscribe to the philosophy that keeping others in the know of keeping them selves healthy may also contribute to keeping me and others healthy by arming people with the health knowledge that may prevent the spread of contagious germs similar to COVID-19. The hope is if individuals know how to protect themselves, they may also be protecting others.
      Bold Know Yourself Scholarship
That which I have learned about myself over my lifetime is that I have found value in the appreciation of others. Not just other people, but their costumes, traditions, experience, and perhaps more importantly, other perception - right, wrong, or indifferent. Being a grown up with a family with multiple children, it has been most interesting to observe what is valuable versus what others value in contrast to my own perceived values. My take away is perhaps one should continuously explore opportunities that may enrich or broadened ones view in hopes that one day true sight may become apparent without preconceived notions or bias.
