Bio

My name is Johnathan Hillebrand, and I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student at SUNY Upstate Medical University. My journey into physical therapy has been shaped by my experiences as an athlete, military veteran, and healthcare professional, all of which have fueled my passion for helping others regain mobility, independence, and confidence. Growing up, I played football, lacrosse, and wrestling, which introduced me to rehabilitation through my own injuries. These experiences, combined with my work as a physical therapy technician, solidified my decision to pursue this career. My military service in the Michigan Army National Guard strengthened my resilience, discipline, and commitment to serving others, particularly veterans and individuals facing physical challenges. My goal is to become a sports physical therapist, working with collegiate and professional athletes while advocating for better rehabilitation access for veterans and individuals with disabilities. I am passionate about optimizing human performance, injury prevention, and recovery. I am a strong candidate for scholarships because of my dedication to service, perseverance through personal challenges, and passion for helping individuals regain their strength. Financial assistance will allow me to focus fully on my education and clinical experiences, ensuring I can make a lasting impact in my field and community.

James B. McKillip Scholarship for Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is more than just a profession to me—it is a calling that blends my passion for movement, rehabilitation, and helping others regain independence. My introduction to physical therapy came as a patient, recovering from multiple injuries sustained in athletics. These experiences exposed me to the profound impact physical therapists can have on a person's recovery, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. The support and encouragement I received during my rehabilitation inspired me to pursue a career where I could provide the same life-changing care to others. Beyond my experiences as a patient, my time working as a physical therapy technician solidified my decision to enter the field. I witnessed firsthand how physical therapists help individuals regain mobility, confidence, and overall well-being. Whether assisting an athlete recovering from an ACL tear or helping an elderly patient maintain independence after surgery, I saw the vital role physical therapy plays in restoring function and quality of life. My experiences also taught me that physical therapy is not just about treating injuries; it is about empowering individuals to achieve their fullest potential. My background in the Michigan Army National Guard further strengthened my understanding of the need for physical therapy, particularly in veteran populations. I served alongside individuals who endured both visible and invisible injuries, many of whom required extensive rehabilitation to regain mobility and functionality. Seeing the challenges that injured service members face reinforced my commitment to advocating for better rehabilitation access and individualized care, particularly for those in high-demand physical careers such as the military and athletics. As a future physical therapist, my goal is to work with athletes at the collegiate or professional level while also contributing to the rehabilitation of veterans and individuals with disabilities. I want to help patients not only recover from injuries but also prevent them by promoting injury prevention programs, strength training, and movement optimization. In the long term, I hope to be involved in research focused on improving rehabilitation protocols, particularly for athletes recovering from orthopedic injuries and veterans with service-related conditions. In addition to clinical practice, I am passionate about community outreach. I believe in the importance of making physical therapy accessible to underserved populations and advocating for rehabilitation services for individuals who may not have the financial means to receive proper care. Whether through volunteer work, adaptive sports programs, or educational workshops, I want to use my skills to support those in need. Physical therapy is important to me because it represents the perfect blend of science, movement, and human connection. It is a field where I can directly impact people’s lives, helping them regain independence and achieve their goals. Through my work, I hope to contribute to the advancement of the profession, advocate for improved rehabilitation services, and most importantly, make a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients.
