I have been inspired and shaped by aspects of politics and governance. In some aspects, it has had a positive impact, however further exploring, I have also seen some negative aspects as well. I have always been extremely interested in the government, even back to kindergarten, I excelled in social sciences and government classes. I was then drawn to study Law and Politics, and pursued the field when I went to college. Growing up in Catholic School, virtue and morality was considered in almost every lesson. It was here that I assumed virtue and morality would be prominent in other aspects of life, especially in the government and civil service. Yet, as I grew older, I peered past the veil and began to see that not everyone shared the moralistic views I was taught. The more I learned about government in college, the more I saw past the pomp and circumstance of government. I uncovered a field full of dysfunction and corruption hiding behind the majesty of government. It was there that I decided that I had to make a difference, to be the one person who stood up for what is right and just. A hero of mine, Travis Manion asked “If not me, then who?” Travis Manion, a naval academy graduate and soldier from the Iraq war, was killed in action defending his squad. Those words, “If not me, then who?” resonates with me every day. It was here that I decided to join the world of politics to strive to be the one who fights for justice and morality, rather than compromising my views as it seems many politicians do. I used to believe I wanted to serve in Congress and even aspired to be Speaker of the House. However, learning more about government, I would prefer to serve on the Supreme Court. Legislation is the building blocks of society and government; however the interpretation of such laws is the mortar. The judiciary grants the legislation its meaning and the legitimacy it needs to stand. Words can have many meanings. This has been proven by the Supreme Court time and time again. The meaning, function and interpretation of a piece of legislation or a law can drastically shift when it leaves the halls of congress and enters the chambers of the Supreme Court. It is here that morality and clarity must be present, in order to chaperone justice through the interpretation of the laws, and to overturn legislation that does not honor the Constitution of the United States or promote justice. If I was to strive for any position in the government, I would strive to be a justice on the Supreme Court. In addition to my passion for the judiciary, a policy issue that is important to me is foreign policy, specifically ending war and ushering in peace. With war raging between both Russia and Ukraine and Israel and Palestine, it is important to me as a person, and as a Christian, to see these wars ended, in order to stop the brutal killing of military and civilian life. It is imperative to me that peace prevails over conflict. They key to ending these wars, and all wars are civil discourse. Leaders of nations must humble themselves in front of their adversaries to sue for peace. Tough decisions and compromises must be made in order to preserve human life. This would be the definition of servant leadership, which is what I strive to be in every aspect of my life.
