Storytelling has been an all-inclusive thing in my life since childhood. Growing up in Detroit, the inspiration was just in the stories surrounding me: strong resilience in my community, artistry in music, and transformation in media. My journey into Michigan State University has not just been a step toward higher education but a commitment to turning these inspirations into a lifelong mission of creativity, impact, and representation. I come into the major of Digital Storytelling as a freshman with a purpose: to learn the ways of effective storytelling using visuals and audio to lay down a foundation on which I will be able to give back to the community. A number of years ago, the spark was lit when I co-founded the podcast "R u Serious" during the pandemic. That platform gave me the means to navigate controversial social topics, familial dynamics, and personal growth, thereby laying the foundation for my passion in impactful storytelling. It also taught me one of the most valuable lessons: "If you don't control your narrative, someone else will." This realization forms the bedrock of my long-term ambition-to be a professional film and television director. I want to tell stories that change the way people see things, that give voice to the voiceless, and that spur constructive dialogue. To reach this goal, I’ve charted a detailed plan. At MSU, I’m engaging with advanced courses in digital storytelling and film production, supported by mentors and professors who share my vision. However, education alone isn’t enough. I’ve committed to earning certifications in advanced film production and audio engineering through MSU and Berklee College of Music. These certifications, costing approximately $3,000 over the next four years, will equip me with technical expertise in cinematography, sound design, and post-production—skills essential for a director’s toolkit. Beyond academics, I’m actively building a professional network. As a Vaccine Ambassador with Wayne State University’s School of Medicine and a youth mentor in the Detroit Public School Community District, I’ve honed my ability to connect with diverse audiences. These experiences have taught me the importance of adaptability, a skill I’ll carry into the highly competitive film industry. I will continue attending networking events, film festivals, and workshops, budgeting $500 annually to establish connections with professionals in the field that could advise me regarding opportunities. The other major step would be in making my own projects. I intend to make two substantial short films before graduation that deal with themes of resilience and social justice. These will be two films at $10,000 apiece, which I can cover through grants, crowdfunding, and sponsorships. These films will be my portfolio, showing how I can weave compelling narratives into film and further cement my reputation as a visionary storyteller. Graduation will not mark the end of my journey. I have found myself living in an environment quite different from Michigan's, one that is more challenging and creatively inspiring. This isn't just a change in environment; it's one giant leap toward realizing my dream. The house I often dreamed of symbolizes my aspiration-a place where creativity flourishes, endless possibilities flow. But my big mission goes beyond personal success. I hope to return to Detroit-a city that built me-investing in its creative arts community, mentoring young storytellers, and producing works reflective of its singular spirit. Undoubtedly, the road ahead is uphill, but I am embracing it as always-with the resilience of my roots. In the combination of resources within Michigan State, an unwavering determination inside me, and a clearly thought-out future, I am ready for whatever gets in my way.
    Future Leaders Scholarship
In my senior high school year, I served as a Vaccine Ambassador with the Wayne State University School of Medicine, working on a project to address vaccine hesitancy in my community through its Public Health Department. This was a role that did not only require knowledge but also leadership, given one had to bridge gaps in understanding and instill trust in a highly polarized environment. This, among other things, included speaking to very diverse audiences, most of whom had deeply entrenched skepticism about vaccines. Some were misinformed, while others had real concerns based on their experiences. My goal was not to lecture or impose but to listen, understand, and create meaningful dialogue. I approached this challenge by trying to be flexible and sympathetic. I tried to adopt different approaches, depending on whom I was communicating with: I would hold open discussions with smaller groups, letting people express their doubts and tell their stories. Larger groups required a clear and concise message, supported by analogies and visuals the audience could relate to. I shared my experiences, too, which helped to find common ground. I am proud of one thing: simplification of complex vaccine science through a visual presentation to make it understandable in laymen's terms. It is this breaking down of barriers with jargon that cued the door for the science to become more accessible. I found people's questions went from being less defensive to more curious; at the end of some sessions, individuals said thank you for being heard, not judged. This effect was very strong because, well, I wasn't just helping in the breaking of myths but helped others to go on and spread better information within their groups. I realized that leadership is not about commanding, it's about trust and instilling a sense of shared responsibility. I now see these as invaluable leadership lessons in envisioning my future career as a storyteller in film and television. From directing people on set to crafting a narrative on the ills affecting society, such as gun violence and healthcare accessibility, listening, adapting to, and being able to connect with people of diversified perspectives will lie at the core of my work. I look forward to using storytelling to create impacts, highlighting the need for attention on urgent issues and bringing about changes with regard to understanding and empathy. Just as I was able to do as a Vaccine Ambassador, I will leverage my abilities in the gathering of people, stimulating conversation, and contributing to building a more aware and sensitive world.

It was a doctor when I was young, not because carving up someone's body fascinated me, but because helping people-healing, making lives easier-just felt like calling. I could visualize myself in that white coat, making sense out of chaos, instilling hope into others. But it was only later, much later, that this urge wasn't confined to medicine-that it overspilled itself into stories. Stories amaze me in reaching places that science doesn't. It soothes societies, joins people together, and motivates change. It wasn't until the 11th grade that it became a complete reality. At that time in my life, I had a woman that I had created this huge world with, inside jokes and memories abounding in it. That world shattered at night when her drunk, gun-wielding aunt held me at gunpoint. At this point in my life, my perceived notion of a far-off future couldn't feel more insurmountable. That night shook me, but at the very same time, it also lit a fire inside me. It made me understand that life was fragile and that one needed to make the most of that time. The childhood dream was to be a doctor; today, it has evolved-though still a dream-to heal, now through tools called a camera, a script, and a vision. I want to be that storytelling lot, one which inspires change, starts conversations, and gives voice to those whom nobody ever listens to. Writing this essay has felt akin to honing that skill: with words to describe an experience, connect to others, and have impact. My mission is simple yet powerful: "Pay it forward. Each one, teach one." I want my work in film and TV to amplify stories that matter-particularly those which affect issues such as gun violence, which has affected the lives of so many people, including my own. From my youngest years to today, my path has been helping others-from tutoring younger students to contributing to community programs and creating art to inspire. My journey is not just about fulfilling my dream; it's about using my platform to help others fulfill their own. How'd I do? I will want to leave a mark far bigger than myself, by the power of telling that story to educate, inspire, and transform. Of course, it may well be so that being Doctor Gillon is not part of my life, but in that quest lies a continuing mission-to impact a life one story at a time.

I've chosen to pursue art because it is the most powerful way I know to serve others. Art isn't just about self-expression; it's a gift that creates space for understanding, connection, and change. Growing up in Detroit, I've seen how stories-whether told through music, film, or photography-can uplift a community, shed light on overlooked truths, and inspire people to believe in something bigger than themselves. This work for me is the way of giving back and amplifying other people's voices and stories. What inspires me artistically is the possibility of impact. I'm drawn to stories that challenge the status quo and provoke conversations that matter. For example, when I assistant-directed a documentary on Hill Harper's path from acting to running for Senate, I got to see firsthand how storytelling could inspire people to reimagine their role in democracy. In another project, I co-produced a framework video for the City of Detroit, using visuals and narrative to envision a brighter future for the community. These experiences confirmed for me that art isn't just about creation; it's about contribution. One of the most meaningful examples of my work was filming a music video for a Detroit artist whose lyrics reflected their struggles and triumphs. It wasn't just a video; it was a story of resilience that really resonated deeply with our audience. In the same way, when I scored scenes in a documentary with original music, it was an opportunity to serve others by creating an emotional connection that words couldn't say. These projects remind me that my art is never about me; it's about what I can give to those who experience it. Beyond my creative work, I have done youth mentoring, teaching communications and study skills, but most importantly, encouraging younger students to find their voice. I have also been a Vaccine Ambassador, distributing critical information to diverse audiences. I learned through these roles that service and storytelling go hand-in-hand. Whether I'm behind a camera or in front of a classroom, my goal is always to uplift and inspire. It means that, to me, art is a responsibility: giving unto others by telling the stories that matter and creating work catalyzing action. I know this scholarship will give me an opportunity to further hone my craft and give with continued creations of art as I use my voice to build connections, empower communities, and inspire others in the power of their story.

My faith has always run across my life—the way I am leaned on by challenges, opportunities—even aspiration career. I have had the deepest passion and drive to question the status quo from the time I was a little boy. I believe that this inquisitive spirit is a gift from God, a reflection of the critical mind He has blessed me with in the pursuit of truth and understanding. It has probably not been so easy, but my faith has been a source of courage to embrace these differences and trust that it's part of His larger scheme for my life. I have always regarded music and art as the foremost language of self-expression through which one is able to articulate feelings or ideas abstractly differentiated through the spoken word. Based on that, I have always regarded this as a gift from God, a reason I have always dedicated my energy to gaining the skills in the subject—from the classical training at the Michigan State Community Music School to performing at the Creative Jazz Ensemble of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. When speaking of my achievements—such as the Grammy nomination for my pen on Royce da 5'9"'s "I Play Forever"—these are not achievements in themselves but testaments to the blessings God trusted me with. My faith also underlines my intention to serve others. I believe that God called me to rise within my craft and ability not for them to benefit me but so that I may be a light to the world. As in my podcast, "R u Serious," as my co-host and I discussed different critical topics, from the issues between parents and kids and their causes and effects to what the real meaning of love is. We share this with people through our conversation to enlighten them and hopefully inspire others to think about their surroundings. Winning this scholarship will be a huge blessing in disguise because it will give me the wherewithal to proceed with my learning objective, helping me to realize maximum benefit and further chisel the skills that God has endowed me with. It will provide the means by which I can obey these instructions, not just for my own sake but because I really believe this is what God wants me to do. Through the continued growth in my craft, I can be able to work towards the creation of meaningful art and media that can bring inspiration and uplifting to others, just as many have done for me. Therefore, I view my career not as something personal but as a mission that God has willed. This scholarship will allow me to fulfill that mission all the better—to glorify God using the talents with which He has gifted me and to serve the greater good. It will be my faith that will assure me, through this support, I can achieve these dreams He has placed in my heart and, in turn, help others do the same.

In my academic and professional journey, I have undergone much struggle—more so when I fell into the unexpected financial shortfall that happened between the transition from high school to college. The last-dollar scholarship, which was supposed to sustain my education, could no longer provide enough funding for the remaining $10,000 per semester. This financial challenge reminded me of the pain and uncertainty with which one pursues higher education. This was overcome through a combination of strategies that involved seeking advice from financial advisors and reviewing other sources of funding, such as more scholarships or part-time working opportunities, that would keep me going. I cut back on my expenses and made a thorough plan on how to manage my finances more efficiently. This experience has taught me resilience and resourcefulness; no matter how tough things seem to get, there are always ways of treading through the challenges to accomplish your goals. This inner turmoil eluded me with comfort from my commitment to Agape love: selfless and unconditional love that puts others' welfare above one's self. It is reflected in my community involvement, such as serving as a Wayne State University School of Medicine Vaccine Ambassador to ensure clarity and effectiveness in vaccination messaging. Critical health information needed to be communicated, but it is also part of my job to actively listen to community concerns and respond to those concerns with compassion and understanding. Further, working as an assistant director and producer on a documentary about Hill Harper, who was transitioning from being an actor into the political world, running for a seat in the United States Senate, further shaped my approach to giving back. By putting together the creativity related to the films and music, I was part of a project that told a strong story and allowed me an opportunity for growth in becoming both a person and a professional. Having been able to score scenes with my original music kept my creative talents aligned in support of the emotional impact of the documentary and its narrative. These experiences have etched in my heart how much I need to continue using my gifts to inspire and uplift others. Career-wise, I plan to make sure work created resonates deep within audiences and gives back to society in some way—continue being that vessel for Agape love. Be it filmmaking, music, or community engagement, I will try to make meaningful differences and help others along their journey the same way I was helped on mine.
    Future Leaders Scholarship
Amongst my academic and professional career, the most outstanding situation in which I practiced really great leadership was being an assistant director and producer of a documentary on Hill Harper. The opportunity that made a real difference in my film and television career became one documenting Harper's transition from acting to his bid for a U.S. Senate seat. The greatest challenges of the project were in finding a balance between creative direction and logistical constraints. Principally, I was to work with an experienced team to plan pre-production through to final edits. I had to take the real challenge of telling a story which would maintain interest while remaining truthful. To help me in overcoming these challenges, I had to make use of a strategic approach through which I was continually seeking feedback from seasoned professionals, adapting to their insights, and being flexible toward the evolving needs of the project. Within this iterative process, I had a better position to manage the story elements of the documentary so that each scene meaningfully serves the overall narrative. Aside from this directorial and production opportunity, I had another rare opportunity to score several scenes with my own original music. It was an extremely rewarding challenge, as it put me in the position of merging my love for music with the visual and emotional tones of the picture. The creative process pushed me further in innovation and integration with my musical composition to work in a way that will complement the documentary narrative and be supportive in building an emotional impact. This has been more than just a professional milestone; it has really cemented my aspiration of becoming a film and TV director. I learned how to be persistent and adaptable toward challenges. These are lessons directly applicable in my future career, where I intend to utilize those learned skills in telling stories that inspire people and provoke their thoughts. This project has helped me really define my vision for making a difference with film and media due to the leadership skills and problem-solving skills that I learned. Now that I'm moving from high school into college, and I'm facing financial and academic pressure in higher education, I believe my work in the arts will make a difference, which helps to keep me moving ahead. This experience worked to further cement my desire to follow my dreams and use my talents in a way that will make a difference in the world.

From a young age, I was never content with accepting the world at face value. My natural curiosity led me to question societal norms, a trait that often set me apart and sometimes even labeled me as “combative.” However, it was this very trait that fueled my passion for artistic expression, a realm where I could explore alternative ways of communicating and challenge the status quo. Music has been a constant in my life, a language through which I’ve found solace and expression. My journey began with a foundational understanding of music theory and history, thanks to my parents’ early investment in my education. Enrolling me in Michigan State University’s Community Music School allowed me to become a classically trained percussionist, and later, I expanded my horizons in music production through MSU’s “Versus” program. These experiences laid the groundwork for my involvement with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Creative Jazz Ensemble and even led to a Grammy nomination for my instrumentation on Royce da 5’9”’s track, “I Play Forever.” These accomplishments inspire me to continue honing my craft and sharing my knowledge with others. Beyond music, I’ve delved into other forms of expression, such as podcasting. Two years ago, I co-founded “R u Serious,” a platform where my co-host and I discuss topics ranging from generational conflicts to the impact of societal influences. Our goal is simple: to spark positive conversations and inspire change. We believe that if you don’t control your narrative, someone else will. This belief drives me to use my voice to inform, inspire, and uplift, whether speaking to a small audience or a large one. My role as a Vaccine Ambassador with Wayne State University’s School of Medicine further reinforced the importance of clear and effective communication. I learned that the information you possess is only as valuable as your ability to convey it. This lesson is one that I carry into all my artistic and design pursuits. As I transition from high school to college, I am acutely aware of the challenges that lie ahead. Balancing my creative passions with academic responsibilities has always been a struggle, compounded by the pressure of early achievements and the many opportunities that have come my way. Recently, I faced an unexpected financial challenge that threatened to derail my educational journey. The last-dollar scholarship I had relied on was no longer sufficient, leaving me with a significant financial gap. This setback has only strengthened my resolve to continue my education and pursue my dream of becoming a film and TV producer. Looking back, I see that every experience has contributed to a unique perspective shaped by my willingness to challenge the norm and push boundaries. My journey has equipped me with a diverse skill set that transcends artistic pursuits, preparing me for both the creative and business aspects of my future career. I am determined to find a university that will not only nurture my artistic talents but also provide me with the business acumen necessary to thrive. In the end, my goal is to create work that resonates with people, work that challenges them to think differently and inspires them to make a positive impact on the world. I believe that through my artistic and design pursuits, I can contribute to a better, more thoughtful society.

From an early age, I never took the world for what it is. My natural curiosity made me question the things going on in society, which quite often has left me isolated and at times has even earned me the label of being "combative." It was this very quality that drove my passion for artistic expression as a way of looking into alternative ways of communication and challenging the status quo. Music has always been there as the language through which I could find solace and expression. I began with the core understanding of the theory and history of music at an early age because my parents had invested in my education. Enrolling in Michigan State University's Community Music School made me a classically trained percussionist. From MSU's "Versus" program, years later, I would broaden my involvement with music production. These experiences set the stage for my work with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Creative Jazz Ensemble and even earned me a Grammy nomination for my instrumentation on Royce da 5'9" 's track, "I Play Forever." These accomplishments inspire me to continue sharpening my craft and disseminating what I know to others. Outside of music, I've delved into podcasting. Two years ago, I co-founded "R u Serious," a platform where I, along with my co-host, go ahead and discuss everything from generational conflicts to societal influences. The concept is simple: we just want to have some positive conversations that might evoke change. If you don't control your narrative, then someone else will. This belief keeps me going, using my voice for informing, inspiring, and upliftment, whether it is before a small audience or a large one. This was further put across in my role as a vaccine ambassador for Wayne State University's School of Medicine, where I again learned that the information one possesses is only as good as the ability to communicate it. It's something that translates into every one of my artistic and design pursuits. Entering college from high school, I am very conscious of the fact that challenges lie ahead. Balancing creative interests with academic responsibilities has always been difficult to manage and is now complicated by the pressure of early successes and many opportunities which have come my way. I faced a serious financial problem recently that imperiled my ability to continue my education. The last-dollar scholarship that I relied on was no longer enough, leaving a huge financial gap. This step backward has just further increased my desire to continue my education in becoming a film and TV producer. Looking back, I understand that every experience added to a unique vantage view, bred from my willingness to challenge the norm and push boundaries. My journey has armed me with a diverse skill set beyond the arts, which readies me for both the creative and business side of the career I'll have in my future. I do know that I want to find a college that's going to help me realize my full artistic potential while also teaching me the business side. Ultimately, I want to do work that touches hearts—work that provokes them to begin thinking differently and eventually inspires them to try to make a difference in the world. I wish that, through art and design, many help in producing a better and more mindful society.

As a child, I always wondered why some things were a specific way or in this particular order. The majority of the population followed the things we saw in movies, what was said in music and many other things in society like there weren't other progression ways to accomplish agenda’s. For a long time this distinguished me from others, my process of thinking from a young age was considered difficult and more times than not “combative” because I was brave enough to question some of the things that we follow blindly or just accept. Still till this day I struggle with people understanding this about me. I possess a plethora of different skill sets when it comes to the disciplines of the arts and expressing myself in a format is more intriguing. Beginning with music, I can say different genres of music have been around me my entire life. My introduction to music was learning the fundamentals of music, music theory, the history of music etc. The early exposure to the arts has taken me beyond what I thought was possible and equipped me with the skills and knowledge to go even further. These skills I acquired allowed me to participate in the “Detroit Symphony Orchestra” Creative Jazz Ensemble in my middle school years, to even becoming Grammy nominated for my instrumentation on the song “I Play Forever” from Royce da 5’9” album. (https://youtu.be/N0q7rXZgz6A?si=PrCGKATFm5u-la58) My outlook on these accomplishments is inspiration to continue to master my crafts and help others. When I think about expression I see it relative to an alternative way of communicating. The purpose of communication is to move ideas, feelings, and understanding between people or groups. This is a field I immersed myself in 2 years ago when starting my podcast “R u Serious” alongside my co host Joshua Blaine We discuss topics, sharing our opinions from our young perspective to spark conversations for the better. We’ve spoken on “Why parents and kids don’t get along”, “The effect of influences” and “What love is” to name a few. (https://youtu.be/1pRF5w3Ej3s?si=9-NtcMZ4qn_CHtqm) Our goal through this work was to really set an example for others and to inspire others to be positive, spread positivity raising the vibration through our words and nevertheless your actions. Why put out a message on a platform if it’s detrimental to your environment? We wanted to change the recurring cycle of negativity. I once heard “If you don't control your narrative some else will” I've carried this with me when speaking out to inform and or inspire. Just as important as it to be able to convey to a small audience it's the same for large audience I say this because through my work under the Wayne State’s (School of Medicine) as an Vaccine Ambassador I learned that the information you have means almost nothing if your presentation and the way you deliver it is flawed. It's imperative to be multifaceted and universal in expressing yourself. All things considered, the combination of all these experiences that molded me into the person I am today, from being labeled, being misunderstood, and also distinguished. I am confident that all of my skills will allow me to carry my mission to instruct and guide budding musicians and filmmakers, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Distribute your expertise and offer chances for development. Also collaborating with nonprofit organizations to produce content that advances their missions is a great way to support their efforts. Arrange films, concerts, or charitable events to generate money for significant social causes.

    Zendaya Superfan Scholarship
Zendaya is a gifted performer with variety in acting, singing, fashion, and advocacy, among other areas. Even if Zendaya's entire career is commendable, my greatest appreciation goes to her dedication to activism, which is what jumps out the most. Zendaya bravely uses her platform to promote good change in an era where powerful people frequently avoid taking a stand on social concerns. She uses her voice to speak out on important social issues, such as gender equality and racial injustice, moving beyond the flash and glamour of the entertainment business. Her commitment to spreading inclusivity and increasing awareness strikes a deep chord with me. Zendaya's engagement in activism is not only a show; rather, it is a sincere declaration of her principles and evidence of her conviction that the influence of famous people can effect positive change. She takes part in important discussions, gives voice to underrepresented groups, and uses her celebrity to draw attention to pressing problems. By doing this, she elevates herself to the status of a shining example for young people like me and highlights the significance of using our power for the greater good. Furthermore, Zendaya's advocacy is distinguished by her modesty and sincerity. She acknowledges the complexity of societal issues and demonstrates a persistent dedication to education as she actively listens, learns, and changes. She stands out for her humility, which promotes an atmosphere of candor and comprehension. Aspiring change-makers find inspiration from Zendaya's support of social justice in a world where role models are crucial in forming societal values. Her ability to combine activism with her varied career in a seamless way demonstrates the enormous influence that artists may have outside of their major fields of expertise. As a scholarship applicant, Zendaya's commitment to using her platform for good inspires me and encourages me to think of ways that I may advance social justice within my own sphere of influence. In conclusion, I have the biggest respect for Zendaya's dedication to activism even though her acting, singing, and styling skills are unquestionably remarkable. She is a prime example of how public figures may act as change agents, and I hope to emulate her.

    Brian J Boley Memorial Scholarship
When words cannot adequately communicate the depths of our feelings, music has the rare capacity to do so, offering consolation, inspiration, and a medium of expression. When it comes to mental health, music can be a barrier-breaking universal language for people dealing with a wide range of issues, from anxiety and depression to more severe conditions. The notion that healing is a holistic process that goes beyond conventional therapeutic methods is the driving force behind the decision to seek a degree in mental health with a concentration in music therapy. It is in the nature of music to stir up feelings, trigger memories, and establish a sense of community. I intend to provide a special and revolutionary approach to mental health treatments by incorporating this potent medium. In my journey towards a degree, I would immerse myself in the study of psychology, music theory, and the intersection of the two. Understanding the psychological underpinnings of mental health issues, as well as the therapeutic potential of various musical elements, would be crucial. Courses in counseling, psychotherapy, and the practical application of music therapy in clinical settings would also form the foundation of my education. I would devote all of my time to studying music theory, psychology, and its intersections as I worked toward a degree. It would be essential to comprehend the psychological foundations of mental health problems as well as the therapeutic potential of various musical aspects. My study would also be based on courses covering counseling, psychology, and the useful application of music therapy in clinical settings. My strategy would be based on real-world experience. Through practical experiences and internships in mental health facilities, community settings, and rehabilitation centers, I would be able to witness firsthand the impact that music has on people overcoming a range of challenges. This exposure would influence my approach, allowing me to more effectively tailor musical interventions to the particular needs and preferences of the individuals I wish to assist. In addition, I hope to support studies that investigate the psychological and neuroscientific processes behind the therapeutic benefits of music. I want to push for the inclusion of music therapy in the mainstream of mental health care by deepening our understanding of the ways in which music may promote recovery. Ultimately, my desire to use music's unique potential to improve the wellbeing of people and communities is what motivates me to pursue a degree in mental health with a concentration on music therapy. It's about realizing the music's capacity for healing through its notes, rhythms, and harmonies, and then directing that capacity into a purposeful and significant practice.

Creativity is like a kaleidoscope of possibilities, and I revel in the art of language and the dance of words. My passion lies in the realm of storytelling, where words become the brushstrokes painting vivid narratives across the canvas of imagination. Through this, I strive to illuminate perspectives, evoke emotions, and spark contemplation. In the grand tapestry of existence, storytelling plays a pivotal role in fostering empathy and understanding. Whether through the written word or the spoken tale, stories have the power to bridge gaps, connect hearts, and transcend boundaries. This, I believe, is where my creative passion intersects with the aspiration to make the world a better place. Imagine a world where every individual can share their story, and every listener is open to embracing the narratives of others. In this utopia, empathy flourishes, understanding deepens, and unity prevails over discord. Through the lens of business or film, storytelling becomes a catalyst for change, a tool to amplify voices, and a means to inspire collective action. If gifted an extra 24 hours in the day, I would devote it to collaborative ventures that harness the power of storytelling for positive impact. Whether through crafting compelling business narratives that drive ethical practices or creating films that shed light on diverse perspectives, the additional time would be a treasure trove for weaving narratives that resonate with authenticity and purpose. Creativity, for me, is a fickle muse that often graces me with its presence during moments of quiet reflection. The interplay of ideas, the subtle nuances of language, and the exploration of untrodden paths ignite the creative spark within. It's in the stillness of early mornings or the hushed whispers of late nights that inspiration often strikes, guiding me to new realms of imagination. For someone interested in the intersection of business and film, the possibilities are boundless. In the world of business, storytelling becomes a strategic tool, transforming complex data into relatable narratives that captivate stakeholders and customers alike. A well-told business story has the potential to build trust, inspire loyalty, and drive meaningful engagement. In the realm of film, storytelling transcends entertainment to become a powerful agent of social change. Films can shape perspectives, challenge societal norms, and shine a spotlight on the untold stories that deserve recognition. Whether through documentaries that expose injustice or fictional narratives that explore the human condition, the film becomes a canvas for fostering dialogue and driving meaningful impact. In essence, the synergy of business and film offers a unique avenue to wield the magic of storytelling for positive change. It's a realm where creativity becomes a force for good, a tool to shape narratives that not only captivate audiences but also contribute to the collective betterment of society.

Stories of love, adventure, conflict and resilience told on the silver screen inspired me to pursue a career in this influential industry. My plans are deeply rooted in this passion, and the scholarship is an important step in realizing those dreams. Shortly, my goal is to complete my BA in Film and Entertainment with Brilliant. The academic environment offers me a deep immersion in both the theoretical understanding and practical aspects of cinema, from the history of cinema to the latest technological achievements. I also plan to participate in various extracurricular activities such as student films, theater productions and internships to gain real-world experience. In the future, I dream of creating my own production company that focuses on telling stories that cross cultural divides and promote understanding. Diversity in media representation is extremely important, and I am committed to helping shine a light on stories that are often marginalized or stereotyped. Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
As a child, I always wondered why some things were in a specific way or in this particular order. The majority of the population followed the things we saw in movies, what was said in music and many other things in society like there weren't other progression ways to accomplish agendas. For a long time, this distinguished me from others, my process of thinking from a young age was considered difficult and more times than not “combative” because I was brave enough to question some of the things that we follow blindly or just accept. Still, to this day I struggle with people understanding this about me. I possess a plethora of different skill sets when it comes to the disciplines of the arts and expressing myself in a format is more intriguing. Beginning with music, I can say different genres of music have been around me my entire life. My introduction to music was learning the fundamentals of music, music theory, the history of music etc. With that, my parents decided to invest in me young by enrolling me in the Michigan State (MSU) Community Music School, where I became a classically trained percussionist through different ensembles I was a member of and later established a foundation of music production from MSU’s “versus” program. These early experiences have taken me beyond what I thought was possible and equipped me with the skills and knowledge to go even further. These skills I acquired allowed me to participate in the “Detroit Symphony Orchestra” Creative Jazz Ensemble in my middle school years, to even becoming Grammy nominated for my instrumentation on the song “I Play Forever” from Royce da 5’9” album. (https://youtu.be/N0q7rXZgz6A?si=PrCGKATFm5u-la58) My outlook on these accomplishments is an inspiration to continue to master my crafts and help others. When I think about expression I see it relative to an alternative way of communicating. The purpose of communication is to move ideas, feelings, and understanding between people or groups. This is a field I immersed myself in 2 years ago when starting my podcast “R u Serious” alongside my co-host Joshua Blaine We discuss topics, sharing our opinions from our young perspective to spark conversations for the better. We’ve spoken on “Why parents and kids don’t get along”, “The effect of influences” and “What love is” to name a few. (https://youtu.be/1pRF5w3Ej3s?si=9-NtcMZ4qn_CHtqm) Our goal through this work was to really set an example for others and to inspire others to be positive, spread positivity and raise the vibration through our words and nevertheless your actions. Why put out a message on a platform if it’s detrimental to your environment? We wanted to change the recurring cycle of negativity. I once heard “If you don't control your narrative someone else will” I've carried this with me when speaking out to inform and or inspire. Just as important as it is to be able to convey to a small audience it's the same for a large audience I say this because through my work under Wayne State’s (School of Medicine) as a Vaccine Ambassador, I learned that the information you have means almost nothing if your presentation and the way you deliver it is flawed. It's imperative to be multifaceted and universal in expressing yourself.

It was more than simply a chance to volunteer when I accepted the position of Vaccine Ambassador for Wayne State University; it was also a journey of self-discovery. This job, which sits at the nexus of community outreach, public health, and education, has given me priceless insights into both the outside world and, more importantly, myself. Realizing my intrinsic love for advocacy has been one of life's most poignant lessons. I was aware of my interest in public health before this experience, but it was through direct community interaction that I came to understand the extent of my dedication to fighting for health justice. I realized how much I enjoyed being a source of clarity and knowledge when I addressed vaccine hesitancy, dispelled falsehoods, and provided accurate facts. In addition, qualities I hadn't completely recognized in myself, including patience and empathy, developed. I frequently came into contact with people who were extremely dubious or afraid about immunizations. I experienced a strong sense of empathy rather than frustration. I was able to approach these conversations with patience and a sincere desire to assist since I knew that their fears frequently originated from false information, prior experiences, or legitimate worries. This voluntary work has also highlighted my adaptability and perseverance. The landscape of vaccine knowledge was constantly changing, with new studies, recommendations, and public impressions appearing virtually every day. Maintaining awareness of these changes and making sure I provided the most up-to-date and accurate information taught me the importance of flexibility and ongoing learning. Most unexpectedly, I had to face my own prejudices and preconceptions. I had preconceived notions about who may be wary about vaccinations before I took on this assignment. The university community is made up of a varied cross-section, yet I learned from dealing with them that vaccine reluctance is not specific to any one demographic or group. This realization made me realize the risks of generalization and the value of treating each person as an individual with their own experiences and viewpoints. Last but not least, being a vaccine ambassador confirmed my trust in group effort. Every discussion, workshop, and outreach activity reaffirmed the notion that group actions, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can result in big change. Each person I assisted in guiding toward immunization was more than simply a personal success. In summary, my time serving as a vaccine ambassador has been illuminating in ways I didn't expect. It has acted as a mirror, reflecting back qualities I had previously overlooked or been unaware of. It has reaffirmed my love for public health, my dedication to volunteerism, and my faith in the effectiveness of compassionate, well-informed advocacy. I am thankful for the development and clarity this experience has given me as I move forward and carry these lessons with me.
    Hopke Foundation Scholarship
I have had a strong conviction in equality, acceptance, and the transformational potential of education since I can remember. My goals have always been to create environments where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, feels secure, understood, and empowered. This is true of both my academic and personal goals. Being a part of the LGBTQ+ Community, I've encountered my fair share of difficulties, both obvious and covert, but these encounters have only strengthened my determination to change things. One of my top goals is to conduct sociological research with a particular emphasis on the LGBTQ+ community. I want to investigate the subtleties of human experiences, bringing to light the challenges and unseen tales that frequently go unnoticed. In doing so, I wish to promote understanding, remove myths, and ultimately help create a more inclusive society. I also have a strong enthusiasm for mentoring. As a child, I frequently sensed a lack of LGBT role models in my life—people who had traveled a similar journey and could provide advice. By offering guidance, support, and understanding to young LGBTQ+ people navigating their identities in a society that doesn't always understand or embrace them, I hope to fill that hole for others. For me, this scholarship represents much more than just financial support; it's a ray of optimism and approval. It represents support for my vision and demonstrates the significance of LGBTQ+ research and advocacy. My academic goals have always been in danger of failure due to financial constraints. Making decisions about my academic career has required juggling given the escalating expense of college and my family's limited financial resources. This financial burden would be significantly reduced if I were to be awarded this scholarship, allowing me to devote all of my attention to my studies and the change I want to bring about. More than just tuition, it would make it easier for me to take part in research projects, conferences, and workshops—opportunities that are essential for my development but frequently remain out of reach owing to financial constraints. Furthermore, receiving a scholarship would mean the world to me symbolically as a gay person. It would serve as evidence that the academic community and the larger community value and value diversity of viewpoints. It would send a message of inspiration to numerous LGBTQ+ students, including myself, that our goals are worthwhile, our aims are significant, and our dreams are real. In conclusion, this scholarship is a bridge between my aspirations and the means to achieve them. It represents hope, validation, and the promise of a brighter, more inclusive future. With this support, I'm not just furthering my education; I'm taking a step closer to my dream of creating a world where every LGBTQ+ individual can thrive, unapologetically and proudly.

Art has always been my compass, leading me through life's diverse experiences, from the subdued colours of a watercolor sunset to the evocative melodies of a haunting nocturne. Creativity was more than simply a hobby for me because I was born into a family of musicians, storytellers, and artists. It was our shared language. I now understand that my past has expertly organized this trip as I navigate the broad and thrilling world of film and music creation. My earliest memories are colored by the vividness of my mother's paintings and reverberated by my father's rhythmic guitar strumming. I was soothed to sleep by the symphonies of Beethoven and the poetry verses of old-world storytellers, while other kids grew up listening to lullabies. The groundwork was set by this sensory tapestry. In my adolescent years, as I became more immersed in the world of film, I learned to value the magic of cinematic storytelling. I was enthralled by the potential of a single frame to elicit feelings and by the way that a straightforward tune could carry listeners away to a different world. My own short films were produced as a result of this enchantment, using homemade tools and friends as actors. Despite being amateur, each endeavor served as a lesson in the challenges and rewards of filming. In parallel, my love for music grew. I experimented with digital audio workstations for hours, blending sounds and making music that spoke to my feelings. It was exciting to match these tunes with my films and create a seamless combination of sound and vision. But it wasn't just the art of film and music that intrigued me; it was also the intricate world of production and business behind them. The enigma of how films are funded, how music labels operate, and how art is marketed became subjects of profound interest. I interned at a local production house during my senior year, acquiring insights into the business of art. It was here that I understood that creativity and commerce, often seen at two ends of a spectrum, can harmoniously coexist. Going forward, I aim to blend my artistic inclinations with my business acumen. I envision creating films and music that resonate with audiences, not just as artistic expressions but also as innovative commercial ventures. Whether it's producing an indie film or launching a new album, I want to be at the nexus where creativity meets strategy. In essence, I am not just an artist or a budding entrepreneur; I am a fusion of both. With a heart that beats for stories and melodies and a mind that strategizes their orchestration and outreach, I am on a journey to carve a niche in the vast, vibrant world of film and music production and business.

More than just financial help, receiving this scholarship is a sign of hope, confirmation of my goals, and a step towards the future I foresee for myself. As a child, I frequently found myself tucked between the pages of books, getting sucked into tales about businesspeople, creators, and innovators. I was in awe of how they overcame difficulties, came up with novel ideas, and ultimately transformed the world. For me, these tales were more than just tales of majesty; they served as a compass, guiding me along a route that I longed to go. But while the direction may be obvious, there are many hurdles in the way, much like with many compasses. Financial difficulties have always been a major barrier for me. Unfortunately, despite all of its powerful qualities, education has a cost that can feel more like a wall than a ticket. This scholarship would essentially assist in tearing down this barrier by giving me unrestricted access to information, opportunities, and experiences. This scholarship would do more than simply pay for tuition and books; it would also be a symbol of the idea that hard effort and dreams may be rewarded. Every time I entered a lecture hall, worked on an assignment, or participated in a conversation, I felt accountable. a duty to the notion that goals, no matter how lofty, are worthwhile pursuing, not simply to myself or the scholarship's donors. In the future, I see myself as a conduit in addition to a recipient. My education would provide me the information and skills I need to fulfill my dream of starting a business that combines technical innovation with sustainable business practices. I see myself fostering young minds, creating employment possibilities, and having a real impact on the neighborhood. This scholarship is an investment in more than just my education; it's an investment in a positive change that will spread across society. Additionally, as I approach college life, I'm very aware of the plethora of experiences that lie ahead—the partnerships, the difficulties, the achievements, and the disappointments. I would become more resilient, sympathetic, and driven as a result of these events. The award would guarantee that I want this scholarship to be a major chapter in the future, as I look back on my path. A chapter that emphasizes the kindness of a community that encouraged me to believe in others by believing in me. It would serve as a constant reminder of the proverbial maxim that states "The potential to create, innovate, and inspire is limitless when one is given the tools and the platform." Finally, this fellowship offers more than simply financial support. It's a bridge to my dreams, a sign of my faith, and a motivator for ambition. You're not just investing in my education when you offer me this opportunity; you're also investing in a future that I'm fervently passionate about—a future where I'll work to help others.
