“What! You’re 19 and still watch cartoons?”
This exclamation is something I hear far too often as a college student.
I believe that animation, no matter the medium, has the power to speak to a person of any age because of how innocent the style may appear. But this does not mean that cartoons cannot tackle huge and important issues that many other mediums struggle to cover.
To me, the definitive example of such a cartoon is Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Growing up with this cartoon, I have many nostalgic memories associated with this series. As I revisit it though, seeing characters like Aang deal with dark issues like fear of failing and not living up to a legacy taught me that we can’t succeed all the time. The important thing is to persevere and make a better tomorrow.
I’m grateful for the cartoons that defined who I am today.
