Hulede Collegiate Golf Scholarship
Winner1. While golf has shaped much of my life and who I am, having balance is really important to me. I love participating in activities that expand my knowledge and perspective beyond the golf course. At my high school, I am involved in many extracurriculars that reflect my passion for leadership and community service. I am the President of the One Love Club at my school that raises awareness about domestic violence and unhealthy relationships. I have been a member of this club since freshman year. This role has helped develop my public speaking and organization skills. I am also an active member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club, a community service organization where I’ve participated in Christmas toy drives, worked on homework with underserved kids, and volunteered at Gigi’s Playhouse, a Down syndrome organization in Annapolis. Even though golf does take up a lot of my extracurricular time, having a balance between golf and my interests in leadership and community service have strengthened my dedication to helping others.
2. This fall, I will be attending Bucknell University where I plan to major in Economics and I am also committed to play golf there. Ever since I was little I have always had a passion to pursue a business-related career and I am confident that studying economics will help me achieve that goal. The topic of economics has always captured my interest, specifically how our choices and actions are shaped by the rules, systems, and society around us. Personally, I have always seen economics more than just numbers and markets, I’ve seen it as an outlet to understand how our world functions and how it can be improved.
My parents and mentors sacrificed a lot for me to pursue my dream of playing collegiate golf, so I want to use my education in economics to eventually create programs that help others build more secure futures. I have such a passion for economics and giving back to my community so I am very excited to be immersed into that field once I go to Bucknell.
3. I have been committed to giving back to my community since my freshman year of high school. I have spent many of my summers either working or volunteering in golf-related fields. During my freshman summer, I volunteered as an assistant golf coach at a First Tee Program, I also recently worked with the International Black Golf Association (IBGA) and taught underserved kids in the greater Annapolis area how to play golf. This organization offered transportation to and from the golf course, clubs, and any other resources needed. It was truly such a great experience. Apart from volunteering, I also work in the pro shop at The Preserve at Eisenhower Golf Course. From these volunteer and work experiences, I have seen firsthand how powerful the game can be in building confidence and connections.
While at Bucknell, I will be committed to staying involved and giving back to my new community. I also plan to continue working with youth golf programs.
Reflecting on the leadership and community service engagement I participated in while I was in high school, I hope to continue pursuing those passions and to be someone who supports others and opens doors whenever I can.
4. Receiving the Hulede Collegiate Golf Scholarship would make a significant impact in both my academic and athletic journey. My parents have sacrificed so much to support both me and my younger sister, who also plays golf. This scholarship would help financially with college tuition, books, and other college necessities. Beyond the financial support of the scholarship, the community and mentorship opportunities provided through this program are aspects I deeply value and want to be a part of. Within this scholarship program, we have access and support from experienced professionals who understand the challenges and life of being a student athlete. I believe this will significantly help guide me through the next four years of college and beyond. Additionally, since this scholarship is dedicated to supporting BIPOC student-athletes, it shows me that this program is more than just financial aid, it is an investment in equality and representation. With the support that is offered through this scholarship, I know I will grow as a golfer, student and future leader.
