I'm a senior in high school who aspires to be a meticulous mechanical or civil engineer. My goal is to use my degree to serve underrepresented populations and those who cannot help themselves.
I'm passionate about making the lives of the elderly better so I've created a community service project named Joy of Friendship. The goal is to give back by spending time and building relationships with the elders. As teenagers, we are often busy with technology and our daily lives, but we forget to check on the elderly population. Through this service project, I have gathered information about the needs of the elderly. With the knowledge gained and my future career as a mechanical engineer, I can invent innovative equipment to improve their lives.
I am living BOLDLY… not just for myself, but for others who cannot advocate for themselves. Every day, I strive to become the best version of myself.

When my mom got her first job as a teacher, she met a lady, Lorna, who became her second mom. Throughout my mom’s pregnancy, Ms. Lorna stayed by her side and became my godmother. When my dad left, her support kept my mom and me from drowning in depression. Growing up in a single-parent household was not easy; it still isn’t. Sometimes I felt like something was missing, especially during important moments in my life, like graduation and awards events, but my godmother always showed up. She didn’t have to take on that role, but that choice positively impacted my life.
My godmother was a teacher, so I had 100% support from her regarding my education. She would ask about my grades, help me study, and remind me that education would open doors for my future. Whenever I felt stressed or doubted myself, she would give me the best compliments. Knowing that someone believed in me pushed me to work harder. I remember when I struggled in Algebra 2, and my mom couldn’t afford tutoring; Goddie did. Her selflessness helped me to earn a B in the class.
When she was diagnosed with lung cancer, some things changed, but her commitment to being the best godmother didn’t. Even when she was sick, she still wanted to see my report cards and hear about my goals. She always encouraged me to go to college and work hard to change my current situation. Seeing her stay positive and strong during her illness taught me what real strength looks like. I know in my lifetime things will get tough, but I will always remember how hard she fought. I will pull from her strength and put the same effort and fight into reaching my career goal as a mechanical engineer.
When she passed away, my world felt like a tornado, my soul cried, and I felt like I lost one of my biggest supporters. It hurt in a way I can’t fully explain, but the memories of her love and kindness eventually brought me peace. Even though she’s not here anymore, I still carry her words of encouragement with me. Whenever I feel like giving up, I think about what she would say. Her words continue to guide my path as I finish high school and move on to college.
Her support built my confidence and determination. Growing up in a single-parent home made me feel stuck and inferior in the beginning, but having my godmother in my life reminded me that I still had love, guidance, and people cheering for me. She helped fill a space that felt empty. I honor her by doing my best in school and staying focused on my dreams. Every good grade, accomplishment, and every step forward is for her as well. I still bring my report card to her burial site, and I know she is always proud.
I want to build on the support she gave me. I will go to college, build a successful future, and support children in my underserved community. My community struggles with poverty, so I plan to impact the youth so they can grow and further impact our community. After earning an engineering degree at the University of Central Florida, I will return to my community to conduct STEM programs and mentor. I want to educate young people and help them see their potential before poverty affects their mental health and ruins their future.
Even though my Goddie is gone, her impact on my life will always stay with me. I will pass it on from generation to generation.

I live in a community where mental health issues are common. I’m from Deepside, a less fortunate and rough part of town in Lauderhill where drug use, weapons, and homelessness are visible. Even on a quick walk to the corner store, it’s common to see people walking without clothes, sleeping on the sidewalk, and arguing with themselves or others. It can get scary at times. Some people call it the ghetto, but I call it home; I was born and raised here.
Mental health hits close to my home as well. I have an uncle who has mental health challenges. When I look at the struggles that he faces, I know that I must do all I can to protect my mental health. Watching him struggle to connect with the reality of life is difficult. My uncle’s mental health challenges are scary, especially when he is not aware of his actions. As a young child, I enjoyed being around him. Later, I watched his mental health decline in front of my eyes. He was diagnosed with multiple mental health disorders. The medications he takes help to keep him calm, but sometimes he doesn't want to take them. Sadly, my relationship with my uncle is not the best because, at times, it is difficult for him to live in the present, which causes us to drift apart. Due to his challenges, he cannot be left alone for long periods, so my family takes turns supervising him.
Although my uncle's challenges are severe, they have taught me some valuable lessons. I’m encouraged to take care of myself, keep my head in the right space, talk about things that bother me, and care for my overall health. Being in a place of consciousness and awareness is my goal when I think of mental health.
I have become more intentional when my uncle is alert and able to interact. When he is alert, he is so much fun to hang out with. My view of the world has changed because of my uncle. He helped me understand that everyone deserves to be loved despite our differences. Although my uncle has mental health challenges, he is still my uncle, and I will assist in making these challenges more bearable for him and keep him safe.
Recognizing the importance of mental health, I used my initials, J.F., to create the Joy of Friendship service project to address mental health challenges and loneliness in assisted living facilities. When I visited my godmother at the assisted living facility, I noticed that some residents rarely had visitors. They would scoot around in their wheelchairs, looking bored, sad, and lonely. That's when I decided to make a difference by creating a group to spend quality time reading, singing, playing board games, and engaging in conversations with the residents. Within our first two visits, residents were more engaged, smiling, talking; their faces told a new story of hope and gratitude. I am enthusiastic about giving back to my community and making a difference by reducing loneliness and mental strain among the elderly, helping them maintain a positive outlook on life.
I realize that poverty, stress, and lack of resources contribute to my experiences with mental health challenges. My community struggles, so I plan to impact the youths so they can grow and further impact our community. After earning an engineering degree at the University of Central Florida, I will return to my community to conduct STEM programs and mentor. I want to educate young people and help them see their potential before poverty affects their mental health and ruins their future.

The Great Nelson Mandela said it best: "Education is the most powerful weapon." Using education as a weapon will allow me to fight poverty, injustice, generational struggles, and oppression. As the product of a single-parent household with a mom fighting lupus, I see the lack of resources, I witness the daily sacrifices my mother makes, and even the tears she cries sometimes. I live in Deepside, a place many call the ghetto, where drugs, weapons, and homelessness are the norm. Yet, I call it home, and I fight daily to rise above its challenges. As a result, education will be the transportation I will use to find a way and turn the challenges into victories.
Education also represents a key. Going to college means I will gain the keys to unlock many doors of opportunity. College will provide exposure to new people and experiences, as well as give me the resources I need to mature into a man of influence. Research shows that an educated person is more confident, can express themselves clearly, and can impact society; this is my desire. Attending college will help me become the best version of myself, so I can be a part of the solution for my family and our world.
My goal is to earn a master's degree in mechanical engineering. I am a natural problem-solver, so this career choice will allow me to utilize my natural skills and abilities. Being a mechanical engineer will enable me to develop new technology and improve existing ones, create solutions to real-world problems, and improve people's lives. I am most interested in improving medical tools to enhance the lives of the elderly and people with disabilities. My goal is to make a positive impact on the lives of everyday people.
Going to college means growing, elevating, and advancing myself so I can look back and inspire others to do the same. As Herman Melville said, "In life, we cannot live for ourselves." My goal isn’t to escape my community but to return as a mentor and help others break the cycle of poverty. My mom reminds me that circumstances don’t define me, and her strength fuels mine. Sports, volunteering, and mentoring have taught me the importance of grit, passion, and determination. The obstacles that were meant to stop me have motivated me. I will pursue my dream of becoming an engineer and use education to build a brighter future for myself and others.

As Dr. Martin Luther King questioned, “What are we doing for others?” As a volunteer, I embody selflessness by serving others. I mentor the younger generation, feed the homeless, entertain the elderly, and contribute my time and resources wherever help is needed throughout the community and surrounding areas.
I serve as a mentor in Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders, an organization at my school that connects incoming 9th and 10th graders with upperclassmen to serve as a network and support system. Instead of using my Study Hall time to socialize or do homework, I spend that time with my mentee. With my mentee, I check on their mental health, their grades, answer any questions they have, and encourage them. It's not always easy to get students to open up and share their feelings, but I persevere and use various relationship-building strategies to engage them. I am like a big brother to my mentees. This volunteer activity helps me remove barriers that may prevent incoming freshmen and sophomores from succeeding.
Using my initials, J.F., I created the Joy of Friendship Service Project. My service project aims to give back to my community by spending time and building relationships with the elderly. As teenagers, we are often busy with technology and our daily lives, but forget to check on the elderly. Joy of Friendship’s goal is to create friendships and authentic bonds between teenagers and residents at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. My project consists of spending quality time reading, playing board games, and talking with the residents. Some residents do not have regular visits from family or friends, so my service project brings smiles to many faces. It makes them feel important when time is spent with them. With this project, I aim to eradicate loneliness.
Early Saturday mornings are my Food Pantry days. The Food Pantry provides healthy meals for the needy and homeless population. Volunteering there, I work either in the warehouse or the kitchen. In the warehouse, I pack boxes of nonperishable food items to deliver to individuals unable to leave their homes due to illnesses. In the kitchen, I serve hot meals and beverages to families who enter, most of whom are homeless. I always remain kind and greet them with a smile to help them feel warm and welcome. I know that sometimes the homeless population does not receive dignity and respect, so I treat them well, just as I do everyone else. Everyone’s situation is different, and we all face challenges, so I do not judge them. I provide them with healthy meals to nourish their bodies. As they leave with full stomachs, I can see the difference a hot meal can make. At the Food Pantry, I help battle hunger.
To graduate from high school, we must complete 40 volunteer service hours by the 12th grade. I am in 11th grade with over 200 service hours. Like Mr. Michael Rudometkin, I am passionate and enthusiastic about giving back to various communities and making a difference. I enjoy volunteering; if someone is in need, I am there. I embody selflessness by caring for others and applying the Golden Rule of doing to others what I would have them do to me. I’m sure Mr. Rudometkin would agree that volunteering is not just a topic; it requires action from a genuine heart.

High school is tough! The academic, social, and emotional challenges can make it seem like you are losing your mind, so a good support system is needed to be successful. The relatives on my mother’s side of the family encourage me, but my main support comes from my mom. My mom is the constant in my life. Being an only child in a single-parent household is lonely, but my mom always shows up for me.
It's always been my mom and me against whatever obstacles came our way. Despite the challenges, my mom ensures I have a roof over my head, food in my stomach, and confidence in my steps. She provides my needs so I can be ready to learn and actively engage in school.
She teaches me values. From an early age, my mom taught me the value of loving myself and being content with what I can afford. Mom reminds me daily of the importance of having good character and the Golden Rule. I am grateful for my upbringing because it keeps me humble. My mom ensures that our home is always filled with love and laughter.
She is an active mom. She shows up to school events and is always the loudest cheerleader on the sidelines at my football games or whatever sport I participate in. Her involvement makes her well-respected by the staff at my school. Everything I am involved in matters to her. She is a teacher, and I know she is tired at the end of her day but she shows up.
Mom makes me feel safe and supported. For graduation, I need to complete volunteer hours. Although she has an illness and needs her relaxation time, she gives up her time to accompany me to the volunteer events until I am comfortable attending on my own.
It hasn't always been easy living in a single-parent household. I've had to overcome the obstacle of self-doubt; I felt like I couldn't measure up to my friends who had more material things and resources than I did. I've missed many opportunities due to the lack of financial resources. Imagine being invited to an event and deciding not to mention it to your mom because you don’t want to burden her financially; this is me. Sometimes I have opportunities to engage in activities, such as academic or athletic tours, social events, and college visits but I can’t participate because we cannot afford it. This is my reality, but I’m not depressed by it because I know a change will come.
I remember a time when I struggled in Math and needed a tutor. Mom took on a second job to pay my tutor over $60 an hour. She always supports me in anything that prepares me for success and a brighter future. She tries to hide her struggles, but her sacrifice is seen every day.
My mom reminds me that I am good enough, that our present circumstances do not define me, and I can reach my goals in life if I stay committed and do what I need to do in school. She encourages me every day and I am strengthened by her strength and how she believes in me.
I know she didn’t plan on being a single mom, but she embraces it and raises me to believe in myself and my abilities. The example she sets for me paves my path as a student, a son, a man, and a good human being. She gave me the confidence I need to make the right choices, face any challenge, and reach my educational goals.

In life, there are so many paths to take. With guidance from the adults and mentors in my life, I have decided to pursue a career path in mechanical engineering. This career will not only provide a stable financial future for my family, but will also allow me to pursue my passion of being a successful inventor who impacts the world. From an early age, my mom noticed that I was good at building and creating things. Later in life while exploring various career choices, she brought engineering to my sight. After some research, I decided to pursue mechanical engineering. I decided to choose this field of engineering because many problems in the world need to be solved; I know I can help as a mechanical engineer. With my ability to manipulate and inspect, engineering is the right career for me.
Building a successful career as a mechanical engineer requires dedication, continuous learning, and adaptability. I believe that my journey in this field will result in a positive lifestyle and growth. The more I dive into the world of mechanical engineering, the more excited I become about the possibilities and challenges it may bring. Choosing to pursue a career in mechanical engineering isn't just about personal success, it's also about making a positive impact on society. As a mechanical engineer, I can contribute to creating solutions that address real-world problems and improve people's lives. Mechanical engineers develop new technology and improve existing technology. Mechanical engineers have designed everything from transportation systems to medical devices. I volunteer at an Assisted Living/Nursing Home Facility working with the elderly population. My assignment is to spend time interacting with the residents. These opportunities allow me to give back and brighten their day, but they also allow me to collect data for my future career. As I assist in the nursing home, I notice that some tasks are difficult for the elderly population to perform. As an engineer, I plan to invent tools, machines, and different devices to improve their lives so they can function the best they can.
A personal reason that will help me achieve my goal is the fact that my mom is ill and sometimes it is difficult for her to complete tasks that the average person can do in seconds. Sometimes my mom has to ask for my help or use simple devices at home to assist her. My mom's reality drives and inspires me to constantly think of innovative ways and tools that can be invented to make her life and the lives of others with any physical illness function better. As Herman Melville said, " In life, we cannot live for ourselves"; as an engineer, I would be able to give back and make a difference.

My two main goals are to be an engineer and a professional football player. These two goals connect with who I am on the inside- a determined and driven young man who wants to make a difference. I realize that there are many decisions to make to turn my goals into realistic accomplishments.
Pursuing a career path in mechanical engineering is my main goal. This career will not only provide a stable financial future for my family but will also allow me to pursue my passion of being a successful inventor who impacts the world.
The more I dive into the world of mechanical engineering, the more excited I become about the possibilities and challenges it may present. By ensuring that these products are safe, reliable, and user-friendly, I can contribute to making everyday life better and safer.
I volunteer at an Assisted Living/Nursing Home Facility working with the elderly population. My assignment is to spend time interacting with the residents. These opportunities allow me to give back and brighten their day, but they also allow me to collect data for my future career. As I assist in the nursing home, I notice that some tasks are extremely difficult for the elderly population to perform. As an engineer, I plan to invent tools, machines, and different devices to improve their lives so they can function the best they can. As Jim Rohn said, "Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment." I have the drive, I am disciplined, and I will reach my goal of becoming an innovative mechanical engineer.

Every day I wake up I pray and thank God for giving me another opportunity to touch someone's life. My church's theme is that we are "Messengers of Hope to everyone we meet". I keep this theme in my mind as I go through the day. Before exiting the car most mornings, my mom often reminds me to "Be a pal; give a smile and a hello because it makes a big difference. You never know what someone is going through." These words ring in my head especially since someone from my school ended their life on our school campus.
As a high school student, we go through a lot, but we do not always talk about it. Sometimes people can see it in our behaviors and sometimes they can't. I try to live in the moment and be aware of my surroundings; I often look to see if anyone looks down or upset. I am not an outspoken extroverted person, but my warm smile and friendly hello provide support and go a long way. Outside of school, I volunteer a lot. At this time, I am focusing on working with the elderly population. I have created a service project named "Joy of Friendship" where I go to nursing homes to spend time with the residents. These opportunities allow me to give back and brighten their day, but they also allow me to collect data for my future. My career goal is to become an engineer. As I assist in nursing homes, I notice that some tasks are extremely difficult for the elderly population to perform. As an engineer, I plan to invent tools, machines, and different devices to improve their lives. My goal in life is to support everyone (young and old), help them find their purpose, and give them a reason to live another day.

Everyone should have representatives at every table. Diverse representation is needed in STEM careers for all people to receive fair and equal treatment and opportunities. People from different social and economic backgrounds, genders, ability levels, races, etc. have different experiences and a lot to contribute to society. If the STEM field only has people from one or a few groups, backgrounds, experiences, etc., the needs of some communities won’t be addressed. For example, if the black community has a problem that needs engineers to solve, that problem may not be of importance, discussed, or addressed if a black person does not have the influence, voice, or be in the right career type to share and elaborate on the problem. Most times, people can speak on topics they are familiar with and are connected to.
Asians and Hispanics can speak on issues in their communities that are affecting their people while African Americans may not understand their struggles. For example, WebMD.com said some of the main health conditions that affect black people are diabetes which can result in amputation, asthma, lung scarring and cancer, stroke, and blood pressure issues. If there are no African Americans in STEM, these issues will be overlooked because it does not directly affect all people as much as they affect black people. Other people may care about the problem, but they may not work hard to address it. An African American in STEM would care about their people and maybe conduct deeper research to come up with innovative technology to help the community.
My passion is to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. The more I researched the world of mechanical engineering, the more excited I became about the possibilities, challenges, and new world that can be accessed in this career. Choosing to pursue a career in mechanical engineering isn't just about personal gain, it's also about making a positive impact on society for all people. By becoming a mechanical engineer, I can contribute to creating solutions that address real-world problems and improve people's lives. As a black man, my presence in the mechanical engineering field would contribute greatly to the needs of the African American community; I can be a voice who serves as a representative.
James D Wilson stated, “Diversity in all its form leads to greatness”. I believe this means diversity brings greatness to all communities and all people; everyone benefits. Diversity is very important in the STEM career; diversity provides fairness and allows all voices to be heard.
