I read books daily.
Hello! My name is JoAnna, and I am a queer, disabled, neurodivergent woman. Starting in Fall 2023, I will embark on my Ph.D. journey in the Institute of Neuroscience and the Department of Biology at the University of Oregon. Since graduating from Western Washington University in June 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, along with minors in Chemistry, Biology, and Psychology, I have gained a diverse range of experiences and skills. I have worked on ambulances and ski slopes, conducted research at national laboratories and biomedical research institutes, and done everything from brain surgery on mice to 3D-printing high explosives and creating coding tutorials and infographics for children. I am passionate about advancing our understanding of the brain and nervous system, and I hope that my future research in the fields of science and medicine will lead to the development of new treatments and improve the lives of countless individuals suffering from neurodegenerative disorders, substance use disorders, depression, and other complex conditions. In addition to neuroscience research, I am passionate about science education and communication, public health, emergency medicine, and promoting equality and equity. As the first person in my family to pursue a graduate degree, receiving scholarships and additional funding will be critical in supporting me on my journey. It will allow me to concentrate fully on my research and coursework without worrying about my finances. Thank you for your time and consideration in reviewing my profile!
