I know nothing of what it is like to be beaten, worked to death, and starved. However, I do understand what it is like to not have a home to come back to. Last April, my home suffered a house fire. I have three siblings, one being eighteen months old at the time. Thankfully no one was hurt, but for two months my family of six was homeless. When we had money, we stayed at hotels an hour away from my hometown. When we did not, we stayed with my grandmother in her two bedroom one bathroom trailer. I slept on a recliner. My brother slept on the floor. My sister slept on a mattress in the back room with my parents and my other baby sister. I felt alone and suffered mentally. This was during track season, and I was not able to perform at my regular speed physically. I was not in school, I was not eating three meals a day, and I was not sleeping at night. We still have not fully recovered from the fire. Falling in love during high school, my parents had me, their first child, right away. I watched them stressfully go through college. They quickly had two other of my siblings, my sister then brother. When they graduated college, things were a little better. My father got a job and made more money. We went from eating ramen and hotdogs daily to having hamburgers and the occasional McDonalds. To some, that is nothing, but for me and my siblings it was everything. Now, my parents are both teachers at a small school in Missouri. They get paid the minimum that teachers can be paid. We are better off than we used to be, but we are not well off in any way. I will not get any financial aid from my parents for college. Through these hardships, I have learned that you should save money and be financially stable. Living well momentarily and living well consistently is a choice you have to make early in life. You can prepare for some things, and I have learned to be a resourceful problem solver. I also learned that having a good community changes everything. I am grateful for my hardships and the lessons they taught me. If I win this scholarship, I will go to college and enter into a psychology program. I will own my own business and open clinics in rural areas where I know people struggle with mental health. People like myself when my house fire happened. I wish I would have had someone to talk to during that time. I must admit that I have read many books that would be adequate for educated adults to read with very deep meaning such as "To Kill A Mockingbird," "Romeo and Juliet," and "Lord of the Flies." More recent novels like "The Silent Patient" and "Ida B" also have deep meaning. There are also religious books that could be read, but forcing someone to read about religion probably is not the best way to convert them. When choosing the book I would pick for every single person in the world, I had to consider a few variables. There's plenty of children on the planet right now, so I want to pick a book that they can understand. In the same way, some people aren't great readers or can't understand big symbolism. Some people don't like fiction and some don't like nonfiction. It has to be interesting while still being simple to understand with a deeper purpose. What a challenge! Finally, after much consideration, I must say that "How Full is Your Bucket" by Tom Rath (Author), Mary Reckmeyer (Author), Maurie J. Manning (Illustrator) is the book I would have everyone in the world read. It is a children's story about kindness and building others up. It has a moral illustrating complimenting someone as filling their bucket and criticizing them as dumping their bucket. It illustrates just how easy it is to affect someone's mood. It teaches a lesson about kindness. It is not completely full of fiction, but imagination. It has a deep meaning without it being too hard to understand for children. The dream that has been passed down from my grandfather to my father to myself is the dream of being a track-star. With my father as my coach, I ran a mile for the first time. Excitedly, I stood at the line, heard my coach yell “Go!” and went. Four laps to go on a four-hundred meter outdoor track. At first, my energy was taking over, adrenaline dripping with my sweat. Second came around, and my torso felt heavy, weighing me down. Somehow, the sun seemed to beam down harder on me than the former lap. On the third lap, tears filled my eyes, steps slow and short. On the fourth lap, my legs refused to do as I told them, screaming with sore muscles. When it was finally over, the coach looked at me detached, focusing instead on the jumpers in the center of the field. “What was my time?” I asked. My body tensed, preparing for the answer. I watched as he turned his attention to the watch, and then to me. Almost eight minutes. I fell to the ground, breathing hard, tears filling my eyes. I want to make them affordable for students and community members to get mental health care when they need it. The inability to pay for mental health care has effected the populations in small towns and been a cause of suicide, drug and alcohol addiction, and several other detrimental effects in rural societies. This scholarship would contribute to paying for tuition, which I need plenty of help with. During my childhood, I was the first one to go up to the kid sitting alone at lunch. Filled with so much excitement, I would (accidentally) yell "HI! I'M JORDAN I WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND!" I was overwhelmingly outgoing and definitely too loud for any introverted kid. Most of the time, they would smile awkwardly and let me sit with them. I would do this until some more kids started to sit with us at lunch. The group would grow and grow until I would find the next lonely and introverted victim of my volume. Growing up, I guess my opinion on bullying did not change much. Once, I saw a girl vandalizing an anti-bullying hotline poster in the bathroom. The screaming match would not end until a teacher came in and brought me to the principal's office. After a stern talk from the principal about how yelling at a kid about bullying might actually be considered bullying, I realized I needed to take a different approach. This led me in high school to join clubs and organizations. In these organizations, I planned events with the school that would initiate connecting in the student body. Not a single person was left without someone to talk to. I watched as people who used to walk alone in the hallways suddenly were giggling in groups of their friends. People felt comfortable joining clubs and sports. The school even saw great improvement in attendance. With the growing of extracurriculars came the expanding of ideas. Clubs, under my presidency, began to make anti-bullying flyers. They wrote words of encouragement on sticky notes. Bullying has been reported and stopped as soon as it has begun. My room was very messy. It began when I started high school. When I had the time, I picked it up a little, but the time seemed to happen less and less. I would be changing clothes to get ready for school and throwing my pajamas on the floor, hurrying not to be late. Then, on Saturdays, I finally get to rest in my room and eat some food on my bed, leaving the dishes on my bedside table. Sundays I throw open my drawers seeking out a specific shirt that's in the laundry room. Changing clothes for practice leaves more clothes on the floor. I read a study once by PsychCentral that talked about the link between messy rooms and depression. It said that messy rooms leave people, especially women, feelings of overwhelming chaos, leading to lack of motivation and even depression. To my understanding, a messy room is a sign of messy mental health. Looking back, I see now that I was not mentally stable. My grades were good but it took a lot of effort and plenty of time. My relationships suffered because I could not spend time with them. Because of this, I was pulled into a lot of drama. I started to develop anxiety about what would happen next with my friends. Eventually, I pulled away from them into an overwhelming chaos I was completely alone to endure. I played sports and joined clubs, only to have more on my plate with planning events, games, practices, and meetings. I overdid it, but maybe it would look good on a college application. I even made time for community service here and there, hoping to add a couple bonus points to my applications. When I would come home from my busy days, I wouldn't spend time with my family. I would grab a plate of dinner, take it to my room and fall asleep within the hour. I was completely alone and absolutely desperate for a way out of the overwhelming structure of my day. Christmas time was the worst time of year for me. Because I had isolated myself, I lost everyone who cared about me. I didn't receive or give any gifts. I got some from my family, but each gift came with criticism about how I needed to spend more time with them. I was so stuck in my self pity, I refused to even argue or explain myself. No one would understand. I was the ultimate victim that I had forced myself to be. It became apparent something had to change when someone started a rumor that I tried to kill myself. I needed to change so, if nothing else, the rumors would stop. I went into my bedroom that night and managed to clean it. It took hours. The next morning I did my makeup, hair, and made a cute outfit. Effort. I was tired, but maybe looking cute would be worth it. At school, I made an effort to talk to my friends and joke around. Success is much more than a word. In fact, it's even more than an action. Success is a mindset, a state of mind. It is defined by how fulfilled you are in what you are doing. Once you are finally at peace, content in yourself, you are successful. You are only truly successful when every aspect of your life has been completed, in a sense. For some people success is finishing a life-long goal. For many success comes from relationships, religion, and many other related things of that sort. I find success, a feeling of fulfillment, in almost everything I do every day. I do things purposefully, always seeking out peace of mind. Success comes with life, they are partners. Having a success-centered mindset has changed my life. I see mistakes as stepping stones to success. My freshmen year, I didn't make it to Track and Field state. At first, I was disappointed and mad. One of my friends tried to comfort me, saying "Don't mistakes make you greater? You've learned your lesson. Move on." They will never understand what that meant to me, it caused the greatest epiphany. I became more grateful. My mood, goals, life, and even my motivation have all become positive. I am a better person with a success-centered mindset. My goals are important, but what I think is even more important is the journey that goes with it. The mistakes have all led to what makes an accomplishment so great and brings you fulfilling peace.
