Did you know that in 2022, it was reported that African American veterinarians only made up about 2.2% of the veterinary workforce in the United States? (Sutton, 2023) In 2024, it is now only 1.4. Only 1 out of 5 African American veterinarians are women. This reality fuels my passion for animal care and my determination to contribute to growing that number. As a young African American woman, I envision a career where I can make a difference in the lives of animals.
Ever since I was a little girl, I've felt a strong connection to animals. From secretly collecting ladybugs in elementary school to caring for my childhood dog, Thomas, I've always been drawn to nurturing and understanding the needs of creatures great and small. Though Thomas's passing was heartbreaking, it ignited a spark within me to become a vet. Later, in July of 2020, I finally got my own pet, a long-haired Guinea pig named Kobe. Now as a graduating senior, Kobe is still here by my side, and my determination to become a veterinarian is stronger than ever. More recently, I have just taken in a stray Abyssinian kitten named Kittyoncé. She was found on the curb, under our trash cans. I took her in right before leaving to cheer a football game and she has now become a part of our family.
My decision to pursue further education will not only provide me with the information and abilities necessary to achieve success in the field of veterinary medicine, but it will also put me in a setting that places a premium on creativity, analytical reasoning, and the inclusion of a wide range of insights. Attending North Carolina A&T State University is more than just a step towards higher education; it's a pursuit of an environment that fosters innovation and critical thinking, qualities I deeply value.
As an African American woman interested in this field, I understand the unique challenges that come with being a minority voice, but I am committed to transforming those challenges into strengths. I believe that my background and perspective will help me connect with families and communities becoming stronger. This connection can foster trust and collaboration, which are essential for dismantling barriers and addressing disparities in access to animal healthcare.
Ultimately, becoming a veterinarian is more than fulfilling a personal goal. It is about embracing my identity and using my education to make a meaningful impact. College will be the beginning of this journey, a place where I can grow, refine my skills, and prepare for a life of service, compassion, and change.
