My grandmother's kitchen was my first classroom in cultural exchange. Immigrating here, she made friends with people with diverse cultural backgrounds. The only thing they had in common was that they were different, and so they stuck together. They shared their differences through their traditions, celebrations, and, most importantly, food. And as my grandmother shared with them the food of northern China, they shared theirs. Eventually, my grandma's kitchen was filled with a miscellany of ingredients: Indian spices, jellyfish, pickled bamboo, curry chicken, chile lime hot sauce, etc.
Eventually, when I got old enough, my grandma would sit me next to her as she cooked with these gifted ingredients, sharing with me the stories of the families, the origins of the ingredients, and the traditions they represented. Through these culinary explorations, she showed me the vast tapestry of culture in our world and exposed me to the inclusive environment created by the sharing of these ideas.
Yet, as I entered high school, I noticed a void. While our school was diverse, there wasn't a dedicated space for students to share their unique cultural backgrounds. There was a lack of a medium where students of cultures could share their heritage and culture. I felt a personal responsibility to bridge the gap. With the help of my peers, I helped found the Bethel Park High School Cultural Exchange Club. My goal was simple: to provide a platform for students to share their unique heritages and foster a more profound understanding of the world's rich tapestry of cultures.
As president, I organized events that celebrated the diverse backgrounds of our student body. We encouraged students to participate in cultural festivals that featured traditional foods, music, and dances from around the globe. One event showcased Lunar New Year, complete with traditional red envelopes and a dumpling-making station, reminiscent of my grandma's kitchen. Another highlighted Diwali, the Festival of Lights, with vibrant colors, traditional sweets, and intricate henna designs.
Beyond the festivities, the Cultural Exchange Club became a safe space for students to share their stories and experiences. We held discussions on cultural identity, stereotypes, and the challenges of navigating different cultural norms. These conversations fostered empathy, respect, and a sense of belonging among our members.
Leading the Cultural Exchange Club wasn't always easy. There were logistical challenges, such as securing funding and finding volunteers. There were also moments of cultural misunderstanding that required careful navigation. Yet, through it all, I remained committed to my vision of creating a more inclusive school environment.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue making choices that create safer and more inclusive spaces. I believe that by embracing diversity, promoting understanding, and fostering a sense of belonging, we can create a more just and equitable world for all. Just as my grandma's dumplings brought people together, I want to use my skills and passions to bridge cultural divides and build a more connected and inclusive community.
