Hello! I'm what one would call a non-traditional student. Which, if we're being honest, means that I'm old! While 43 is hardly old, it is certainly a long way from 18. I recently graduating with an Associates Degree in Psychology at Hudson County Community College in New Jersey.
Long before this current season of educational pursuit I gave college the old college try, yet didn't finish the task while a theater major at Radford University. While I left in good standing, I was no top student. Plainly, I struggled while I was there. My struggles were not just academic. I discovered I was an addict and alcoholic in need of help.
Recovery can be a long road, as was the case for me. I continued to battle my demons for the next 10 years, then everything changed. I returned to my faith and began to live in service of others instead of myself. By being clean I was able to live life on life's terms. I was able to function in my daily life and began to fervently pursue a career in acting. Some may think, why complete the degree if you're already working in your desired career? So often in the addict's life, there are heaps of unfinished business. I want to finish what I started.
While I've been extremely blessed to work in film and television for the past 10 years, have a beautiful wife and an amazing little boy, I have some unfinished business to tend at Radford University. Contrary to perception, actors in film and TV aren't making buckets of cash unless a series regular. So, I joined Bold.org to see if any donors might be willing help me finish what I started.

Lost Dreams Awaken Scholarship
Recovery for me means no more broken chains. I am no longer bound by the shackles of all my failures. Recovery is also my RE-dis-COVERY. I had to drop out of college when I was 24 because of my cocaine and alcohol addiction. I spent time in jail, on the streets, and in multiple rehabs for the next 10 years. My dreams of becoming an actor all but gone. Then, I finally had enough and allowed God to take control. Once I realized that I was put on this Earth to serve others, I was able to offer my skills and talents as a gift to my fellowman. I became a giver instead of a taker. I RE-dis-COVERed my calling of story telling through film, TV, and theater. I'm 42 now, married with an 18 month, and on course to complete my theater degree that I left behind almost 20 yrs ago. My journey is one of redemption, hope and am encouragement to recovering addicts. THERE IS HOPE!
Bold Gratitude Scholarship
Living with gratitude is extremely important to me. Without gratitude I would be in a ditch somewhere, in jail, or dead. I have to remain grateful and always do the next right thing to avoid this fate. As a recovering addict with 8+ years clean, I am always a string of very poor decisions away from disaster. I have to remain full of gratitude to stay in a higher mental and spiritual state in order to follow my calling of being an actor.
Gratitude must be an action word to have its full effect. I wake up because I am grateful to have a new life, free from the chains of addiction, and full of purpose. I am grateful to be in school again after 20+ years, so I actively engage in my studies and do my very best. I am grateful to have a supportive wife, so I actively show her love and appreciation for the work she does for our family. I am grateful for my son, he is my world. I want to be the best father I can be through gratitude filled actions. I want to show gratitude for my new life by completing my degree in the arts.
Without gratitude, I am incomplete. Gratitude is life, fulfilled.
