I have personally had a lot of health problems and have had several people close to me also deal with a lot of health problems. Whenever I was in a hospital I noticed the nurses. They were always the ones who were there for the good moments and the bad moments. In some of the most embarrassing moments of my life and my family's lives, the nurses were there to tell me that everything was going to be okay and made me feel better and a little less embarrassed. I also watched as they eased the suffering of my family members as they were dying. I knew I wanted to be that person and help to ease my patient's pain and the pain of their family and friends. As a patient, I was also able to feel the helplessness of the pain. I had constant headaches every day. Some days they were severe enough I would vomit due to the pain. I went from doctor to doctor searching for an answer to my symptoms. Each one told me something new and sent me on my way. With each new diagnosis, there was still no improvement. My health was declining from the treatments I was being given. I ended up getting C. Diff. from antibiotic overdosing. Eventually, I ended up at a facility where they came up with yet another possible cause. When the treatment for the suspected cause did not work, I was fearful that I would be sent on my way yet again. Thankfully the healthcare workers at this facility decided to fight for me. They were determined to find the cause and help me. My nurses kept me positive and continued to reassure me. They eventually determined that I had severe allergies and that my sinuses did not form properly. I did not have all of the openings I should have in my sinuses which caused improper drainage and constant sinus infections. If it weren't for the healthcare workers that fought for me and kept me going, I don't think I would have made it through that experience. The nurses kept me laughing even on the bad days and made the situation tolerable. I want to be able to do that for other people. I want to help people feel at least a little bit better on their worst days. Eventually, my dream would be to get my Masters's in Nursing Education. This would allow me to teach people not only the physical aspects of healthcare but also the importance of the mental side. A large percentage of healing is mental and I understand that as a patient and a healthcare worker. I want to be a nurse and help people get better in all aspects of their life.
