    Female Athleticism Scholarship
In a world where male dominance often prevails, the role of women in unconventional fields like hockey can be empowering. Striking a balance between rigorous athletic training, academic responsibilities, and personal life can significantly shape a female athlete's strength and resilience. Moving to Northern Michigan at the age of nine was a pivotal moment in my life, as it introduced me to the world of competitive hockey. Initially, I was a late bloomer compared to the other kids in the area who had been skating practically since they could walk. Nevertheless, my cousin's invitation to go skating with him sparked a passion within me that has only grown stronger over the years. The traditional notion of hockey being a male-dominated sport can fuel a female athlete's drive to excel. Overcoming stereotypes and breaking barriers in a predominantly male environment can instill a sense of empowerment and confidence. The resilience developed through facing such societal norms can translate into other aspects of life, equipping women with the courage to challenge expectations and pursue their goals fearlessly. Playing co-ed hockey for five years, I often found myself as the only female on the team. This dynamic, however, only fueled my determination to excel. Setting goals for myself each season became a routine, and as soon as one goal was achieved, I would promptly set another. This drive and ambition led me to playing AAA hockey for the past two years and ultimately securing a spot to play NCAA DIII hockey in college next year—a goal I had envisioned three years ago when I transitioned to female hockey. Ultimately, the experience of playing hockey and managing the demands of school and life as a female athlete can contribute to a sense of empowerment and strength. While hockey is undeniably my passion and a significant part of my life, I am also aware of the reality that one cannot play forever. This realization has motivated me to prioritize my academics. Throughout my hockey journey, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA, a feat that earned me the Academic Achievement Award at Marian University in Wisconsin. The skills acquired through this balancing act – from time management to resilience – can shape a woman's character and prepare her to navigate the challenges of a male-dominated world with poise and determination. Through the trials and triumphs of hockey, women can emerge stronger, more resilient, and more confident in their abilities to thrive in any environment. I firmly believe in striking a balance between my athletic pursuits and academic responsibilities. Hockey has taught me valuable lessons in discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, while excelling academically has opened doors to new opportunities and personal growth. As I embark on the next chapter of my life playing college hockey, I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today.

Empowerment is a concept that holds different meanings for different individuals, but for me, it embodies the ability to take control of my own life and make decisions that align with my values and goals. It involves gaining confidence in my abilities, having a sense of agency, and feeling empowered to pursue my aspirations. I'm blessed to have been taught about empowerment from a very early age. My parents instilled in me that it is important to maintain a strong sense of self, set attainable goals, and never give up on reaching them. Another aspect of empowerment for me is the ability to advocate for oneself and others. This includes speaking up for one's rights, expressing opinions, and standing against injustices. When individuals feel empowered, they can challenge oppressive systems and work towards creating a more equitable society. Empowerment also involves having a sense of agency and autonomy, allowing individuals to make decisions that align with their values and goals. Empowerment has a significant impact on my life in various ways. Firstly, it fosters a sense of independence and self-reliance, enabling me to trust my judgment and stand by my choices. This autonomy allows me to navigate challenges and setbacks with resilience, knowing that I have the inner strength to overcome obstacles. Additionally, empowerment fuels my motivation to set ambitious goals and strive for personal growth. It pushes me to step out of my comfort zone, embrace new opportunities, and cultivate a mindset of continuous learning and improvement. Moreover, empowerment shapes my relationships with others by fostering mutual respect and communication. It enables me to assert my boundaries, advocate for my needs, and collaborate effectively with peers and mentors. By empowering myself, I also strive to uplift those around me, promoting a culture of support and encouragement within my social circles. Additionally, like positivity, empowerment is contagious often causing a domino effect of optimism. In essence, empowerment serves as a guiding principle that influences my decisions, actions, and interactions. It inspires me to pursue my passions, advocate for what I believe in, and contribute positively to the world around me. Through empowerment, I cultivate a sense of purpose and fulfillment that transcends individual achievements and set achievable goals. These core values make me who I am today, and I know will aid me lead to a more meaningful and impactful life. With empowerment on my side, I'm excited to see what the future holds.

Golf has brought my father and me closer in ways that I never imagined possible. What started as a casual interest in the sport quickly turned into a bonding experience that has enriched our relationship in countless ways. Through shared rounds on the course, we have found common ground, strengthened our communication, and created lasting memories that we will cherish forever. One of the most significant ways in which golf has brought us closer is through the time we spend together on the course. As we navigate the fairways and greens, we have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, share stories, and simply enjoy each other's company in a peaceful and picturesque setting. This shared experience has allowed us to connect on a deeper level and forge a stronger bond that goes beyond mere words. Golf has provided us with a common interest that we can both enjoy and appreciate. Whether we are discussing swing techniques, analyzing our shots, or strategizing our next move, golf has given us a shared language and a shared passion that brings us together in a unique and special way. This shared interest has allowed us to develop a deeper understanding of each other and has opened up new avenues for communication and connection. As a female golfer, I have faced and overcome various challenges throughout my journey in the sport. One of the main obstacles I encountered is the unequal treatment and recognition compared to male golfers. Historically, women in golf have been marginalized and received less media coverage, prize money, and sponsorship opportunities than their male counterparts. This lack of visibility and support can make it difficult for female golfers to excel and reach their full potential. Additionally, the lack of representation and role models in the sport can be discouraging for aspiring female golfers. Without seeing other successful women in golf, it can be challenging to envision oneself achieving similar success. Overcoming this challenge involves seeking out and celebrating the achievements of female golfers, both past and present, who have paved the way for future generations. In conclusion, I don't just view golf as a sport, but a fantastic avenue to develop and foster future relationships throughout my life. Not only has it brought me and my father closer, it has opened up other doors as well. As a female golfer, I have faced and overcome some challenges; however, I will never regret picking up my first club. By recognizing and addressing these challenges, I have been able to grow and thrive as a golfer, proving that with determination and perseverance, female golfers can achieve success on the course.

504 plans are crucial tools in ensuring that children with disabilities receive the support they need to thrive in school. These formal plans are developed by schools to address any condition that significantly limits a student's daily activities. By providing accommodations and modifications, 504 plans aim to prevent discrimination and safeguard the rights of children with disabilities in an educational setting. Protected within Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, these plans are a manifestation of civil rights law at work. The primary goal of a 504 plan is to level the playing field for students with disabilities, allowing them to access educational opportunities on par with their peers. These plans outline specific accommodations, such as extra time on tests, preferential seating, periodic breaks, or assistive technology, to address the unique needs of each student. By implementing these accommodations, schools can ensure that children with disabilities have an equal opportunity to succeed academically and develop essential skills for the future. One feature of 504 plans that many are unaware of is that they follow students throughout their educational journey and are often used in the workforce separate from academia. Growing up with dyslexia presented me with a significant personal hardship that deeply influenced my academic experiences and self-confidence. The challenges I faced with reading and spelling due to this learning disorder often left me feeling embarrassed and ashamed. In school, I struggled to read aloud in class, fearing judgment from my peers. One of my biggest obstacles was the anxiety I felt about others noticing my difficulties, leading to a constant worry about my academic performance. This fear of judgment hindered my self-esteem and impacted my ability to fully engage in my studies. To overcome these challenges, I, with the support of my parents, sought help from a specialized reading therapist. Through weekly therapy sessions, I learned strategies to manage my dyslexia, such as utilizing assistive technology and breaking down complex words into smaller parts. Daily computer assignments, reading, and spelling drills further helped me improve my literacy skills and boost my confidence. Additionally, I worked on enhancing my study habits and time management skills to excel in my academics. With the assistance of my school counselor, my parents, and teachers, we formulated a 504 plan that provided special accommodations, such as extra time for assignments and tests, and leniency for incorrect spelling. This support system was crucial in helping me navigate the challenges of dyslexia and develop resilience and perseverance. It taught me the importance of seeking help when needed, as well as the value of empathy towards others facing difficulties. My specific 504 plan played a critical role in my education by recognizing my rights as a student with a disability. It has also help create a supportive environment where all I feel valued and respected. In conclusion, the lasting impact of overcoming dyslexia has motivated me to pursue my future goals with determination and resilience. I aim to use my experiences to inspire and empower others facing similar obstacles, advocating for resources and support for individuals with learning disabilities. I will continue to advocate for 504 plans as they are indispensable tools that empower children with disabilities to reach their full potential in school. By formalizing accommodations and protections under the law, these plans ensure that no child is left behind due to a disability. By sharing my story and supporting those in need, I hope to create a more inclusive and understanding community.

Growing up, I faced a significant personal hardship that shaped my academic experiences and self-confidence: dyslexia. This learning disorder made reading and spelling difficult for me, and it often left me feeling embarrassed and ashamed. In school, I would avoid reading aloud in class and worry that my classmates would judge me for my struggles. One of the specific challenges I faced was the anxiety I felt about others noticing my difficulties. I was afraid that my peers would see me struggling to spell words correctly on my computer screen or stumble over sentences when reading aloud. These leadership skills are fundamental in any career path I pursue, as they are often key to driving innovation, navigating challenges, and achieving long-term success. I firmly believe in striking a balance between my athletic pursuits and academic responsibilities. Hockey has taught me valuable lessons in discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, while excelling academically has opened doors to new opportunities and personal growth. Abby Roque, a forward on the U.S. Women's National Hockey Team, is a remarkable athlete who manifests the spirit of diversity and representation in sports. As a member of the Wahnapitae First Nation and the first Indigenous woman to play for USA Hockey, Abby has made significant strides in promoting inclusivity within a traditionally homogeneous sport. Her journey began at a very young age; inspired by her father, she started playing hockey at just four years old. This early exposure laid the foundation for her successful career and deepened her passion for the game. Throughout her career, Abby has earned numerous accolades that reflect her talent and dedication to hockey. Specifically, she was awarded the 2020 Bob Allen Women’s Hockey Player of the Year. This recognition not only highlights her individual achievements but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes from underrepresented communities. Abby inspired me specifically because she is from my small hometown of Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. She has always encouraged young female athletes to pursue their dreams, no matter what roadblocks they may encounter. Like Abby, I played on boys' teams until transitioning over to female hockey in high school. I have volunteered at several of Abby's hockey camps over the years and she truly is an inspiration and role model for young hockey players. She has taught me to never give up on my dreams. After high school, I will be playing NCAA DIII hockey at Marian University in Wisconsin. I am thankful for Abby's leadership and example over the years and am thankful for her encouragement and influence.
