In my life, I have had several opportunities to help other people around me. Beginning in high school, I was a member of the FFA and was very involved in the organization. One of the biggest things that we focused on was our annual Sausage Sale, where we would sell sausage to customers and use the profits to go and sponsor local Angel Tree kids so that they could have a great Christmas with their parents. Living in an area that had its fair share of poverty, many of the kids we helped were classmates. It was very humbling to be able to help these children, and I will never forget that experience. At youth group in high school at my church, we often went to volunteer to serve a meal to the people at the Bethlehem House in Conway. The Bethlehem House is a homeless shelter that provides people with a place to sleep and eat, and an opportunity to get back on their feet and be able to provide for their families again. Currently, as a college student, I can help others in my role as a PAL mentor for the incoming freshmen at my University. The University provides a mandatory introductory course for incoming freshmen, and I serve as a PAL mentor for these freshmen. As a PAL, I am a first-hand source for them to ask any questions regarding the University or classes, helping them learn how to be a college student and providing them with help and guidance on any services the University offers for them. Being a PAL, I can meet many different kinds of students coming from many different backgrounds and learn how to work with and help many different kinds of people. In the future, I have many different goals that I want to work towards to help people. One thing I want to work towards doing is to be able to provide a scholarship for a person who wants to attend college but cannot financially afford it. Being a returning, non-traditional student, I have had to scramble to find scholarships to cover my education so that I can meet my main goal of graduating college debt-free. As this is a big goal of mine, I know that others like me also want to graduate debt-free. Being able to help someone who has the same goals that I do would be very fulfilling to me. On a larger scale, another thing I would like to do in the future is to use my Construction Management degree to help those who are less fortunate in other countries. There are many countries worldwide that either have limited access or no access to the necessary resources to survive. I would like to use my degree to go to those countries and be able to build and install necessary utilities and structures for those who aren't as fortunate as I am. Knowing that I will be able to help put in water accesses, school and community center buildings, and homes is something that I look forward to greatly. I have a passion to help those who don't have the things that I do, and I want to help everyone that I can with the resources that I have. Getting this degree will provide me with the knowledge, tools, and connections to help serve and provide people who aren't as fortunate as I am. I hope to be considered for this scholarship opportunity, as it will serve as an aid in my education so that I might be able to help make the world a better place.
