Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
The album '1989' has always had a special place in my heart. Not only does it have amazing hit songs that are pop perfection, but it is also the Taylor Swift album that has the most listens on my Spotify. '1989' is an amazing album that has won many awards including Album of the Year at the Grammys. There is one song in particular that I have always loved and that is 'I Know Places'. I feel like this song is a very niche favorite and I don't know a lot of people whose favorite is this song. This is a song about two famous people who are in a relationship and trying to deal with being in love in the public eye. The song explores concepts of hiding from the paparazzi and facing scrutiny. I have always loved the production and thought that it was very unique compared to the other songs in her discography and on the album. The song just feels so grand and freeing and is a great song to scream to wherever you are. One thing in the song specifically that I like is the beginning because it starts with a camera click and Taylor repeating the word "I". I have always pictured this moment in the song as the paparazzi catching Taylor and her partner and her being startled and stumbling on her words before going into the first verse. She also ends the song in the same way by starting with the repetition of the "i's" and having the camera click to end the song. This perfectly goes with the theme of the song and what it's about. My favorite lyrics in the song are "They are the hunters, we are the foxes, and we run, Just grab my hand and don't ever drop it, my love". This line is repeated throughout the song multiple times which I love. She is calling the paparazzi the hunters and her and her partner foxes because they keep running away from the paparazzi. I love this because it shows how strong the relationship is and how they don't care what the media thinks and want to just keep their relationship private and special. The part where she sings "Just grab my hand and don't ever drop it" only emphasizes that. Lastly, my favorite part of the song overall is the outro because it introduces new lyrics to the song and they are like the icing on the cake. As she is singing the new lyrics, the title of the song, "I know places" is repeated after every line. Taylor also belts every line in this outro which makes them hit even harder and is another reason why the outro is perfection. Overall, I love this song for a lot of reasons and many of them are the things I previously discussed. The production, the lyrics and the way Taylor sings the song just make everything in this song my favorite of '1989'. This album is perfection and I am so excited and anxiously awaiting the day that she releases '1989 (Taylor's Version)'.
