From a young age, I've always been captivated by the narrative of human health yet deeply troubled by the inherent disparities that often loom beneath the surface. My journey towards understanding healthcare wasn't solely academic; it was deeply personal. In my family, healthcare roles are prominent. My mother is a dedicated nurse practitioner, complemented by my physician uncle, and two aunts—one a pharmacist and the other a certified nursing assistant. Their dedication set a precedent, molding my perception, and fueling my passion for healthcare. Given this foundation, I equipped myself for this mission early on. I have served in various capacities: as a certified nursing assistant, a certified medication technician, and as a board-certified health and wellness coach. My previous role in clinical administration also provided me with insights into the organizational aspects of healthcare, which further deepened my understanding of its intricacies. Despite these personal experiences and encounters, one thing remained evident: healthcare, although a universal right, often manifests itself as a privilege. Throughout history, advancements in medical research have illuminated our path, but the glow of these breakthroughs has not shone equally on all. A glaring example is that, according to the Maryland Department of Health, black women face a maternity mortality rate that is 240% higher than their white counterparts. Such disparities are not just statistics but real lives being disproportionately affected, underlining the health inequity within our healthcare system. In the midst of such disparities, I firmly believe in the power and responsibility of nurses. Nurses stand at the confluence of medical science and human empathy, making them crucial agents in delivering unbiased, holistic, and multi-faceted healthcare. They are instrumental in spreading awareness of health disparities, conducting patient-advocacy efforts, and appealing to the appropriate medical authorities and governing bodies. As the frontlines of patient care, nurses have an unparalleled opportunity to build trust within communities. Each new patient encounter is not just a treatment session but a unique chance to educate and spread unbiased health information.
