The first time I truly understood the power of opportunity was when I moved from Venezuela to the United States. Starting a new life in a different country was not easy, but it showed me that education can open doors that once seemed impossible. That realization is what motivates me every day to push myself academically and pursue a meaningful career.
I am currently a high school senior while also taking college classes through the Running Start program. Balancing high school, college coursework, and extracurricular activities has been challenging, but it has taught me valuable lessons about discipline, time management, and perseverance. Taking college-level classes while still in high school has helped me grow academically and has given me a clearer vision of what I want to achieve in the future.
After graduating from high school, my goal is to continue my education in the healthcare field. I plan to complete an Associate’s Degree in Nursing and later pursue my long-term goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). This career interests me because it requires both technical knowledge and the ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations. Most importantly, it allows me to make a real difference in people’s lives during moments when they need help the most.
Sports have also played a major role in shaping who I am today. I play baseball as a catcher and also compete in tennis. Being a catcher in baseball has taught me leadership and communication, since the catcher helps guide the game and support the pitcher and teammates. Tennis, on the other hand, has strengthened my mental focus and personal discipline because it requires individual determination and concentration. Both sports have helped me develop resilience and confidence qualities that will be important in my future career.
In the future, I hope not only to succeed professionally but also to give back to my community. As someone who has experienced the challenges of adapting to a new country and education system, I want to inspire and support other students from immigrant and first-generation backgrounds.
For me, education represents more than personal success it represents the chance to create opportunities, help others, and build a future that once felt out of reach.
Aserina Hill Memorial Scholarship
My name is Jesús Andrade Martínez, and I am currently a high school senior while also taking college classes through the Running Start program. My journey has been shaped by my background as an immigrant from Venezuela, my dedication to academics, and my passion for sports. These experiences have helped me develop resilience, discipline, and a strong sense of purpose for my future.
One of the most important parts of my life is baseball. I play catcher for my high school team, which is a position that requires leadership, focus, and responsibility. The catcher is often called the “captain of the field” because he helps guide the pitcher, communicate with the team, and make quick decisions during the game. Playing this position has taught me how to stay calm under pressure and how to support my teammates in difficult moments. Baseball has also taught me the value of hard work and consistency. Success in baseball does not happen overnight; it requires practice, patience, and learning from mistakes. These lessons have helped me grow not only as an athlete but also as a student and a person.
In addition to baseball, I also play tennis. Tennis is a very different sport because it relies heavily on individual focus and mental strength. While baseball is a team sport where everyone works together, tennis challenges me to rely on my own discipline and determination. Every point requires concentration, strategy, and confidence. Playing tennis has helped me develop mental toughness and self-control, which are skills that I apply to many areas of my life, including academics.
Outside of sports, I am also interested in activities such as photography and content creation. I enjoy working on projects that allow me to express creativity and connect with people. These interests have helped me develop new skills and explore different ways of communicating ideas and stories.
Academically, I push myself by taking college classes through the Running Start program while completing high school. Balancing college coursework with sports and other responsibilities can be challenging, but it has taught me strong time management and commitment. After high school, I plan to continue my education in healthcare. My goal is to complete an Associate’s Degree in Nursing and eventually pursue a career as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. I want to work in healthcare because I believe helping people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives is one of the most meaningful careers someone can pursue.
If I could start my own charity, its mission would be to support immigrant and first-generation students who are trying to build a better future through education and sports. Many young people face challenges such as financial difficulties, language barriers, and a lack of guidance when it comes to applying for college or scholarships. This charity would focus on mentoring students, providing tutoring, and organizing workshops to help them understand educational opportunities.
I believe that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background. Through education, sports, and community support, young people can develop the confidence and skills needed to achieve their dreams. My experiences have taught me that challenges can become opportunities for growth, and I hope to use what I learn in the future to help others succeed as well.

What makes me unique is not just one thing it is the combination of my background, my ambitions, and the way I refuse to let obstacles define my future.
I am an immigrant from Venezuela who came to the United States searching for opportunity and stability. Starting a new life in a different country has not always been easy. There were moments of uncertainty, adapting to a new language, culture, and education system. However, those experiences shaped who I am today. They taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of working hard for every opportunity.
One of my biggest passions is sports. I play baseball as a catcher for my high school team and also play tennis. Sports have taught me leadership, teamwork, and mental toughness. As a catcher, I am responsible for guiding the game, supporting my teammates, and staying focused under pressure. These lessons extend far beyond the field and into my academic life.
Academically, I challenge myself through Running Start, taking college classes while finishing high school. My goal is to pursue a career in nursing and eventually become a CRNA. I want to work in healthcare because I believe helping people during their most vulnerable moments is one of the most meaningful careers someone can choose. Coming from a background where access to healthcare can be limited has inspired me to be part of the solution.
Beyond academics and sports, I am also a creative person. I enjoy photography, content creation, and entrepreneurship. I hope to build projects that inspire other young people like me to pursue their goals regardless of where they come from.
This scholarship would help reduce the financial barriers that many immigrant and first-generation students face. It would allow me to focus more on my education, continue pursuing my dreams in healthcare, and keep pushing myself to become the best version of who I can be.
What makes me unique is my story, my determination, and my belief that with hard work and opportunity, anything is possible.

A Fresh Start: My Journey of Growth and Determination
High school hasn't always been easy for me. In fact, if I’m being honest, it’s been one of the most challenging times in my life but not for the reasons people might expect. I didn’t struggle because I didn’t care. I struggled because life threw a lot at me all at once, and I had to grow up faster than most people my age.
I came to the United States from Venezuela in 2023 under the humanitarian parole program. Leaving my country wasn’t a choice I made lightly. I left behind family, friends, and everything that felt familiar. Adjusting to a new country, a new language, and a new culture while still trying to be a regular high school student was overwhelming. At times, it felt like I was living two lives one as a teenager trying to fit in and do well in school, and another as someone carrying the weight of immigration papers, court dates, and responsibilities that most teenagers don’t have to think about.
During my junior year, I joined the Running Start program at Edmonds College. It was one of the best decisions I made. It gave me a chance to prove to myself that I was capable of more than what my high school grades showed. College-level classes challenged me, but they also gave me confidence. They reminded me that I’m not defined by where I started, but by where I’m going.
The truth is, I didn’t always have the tools or support I needed in high school. I often felt like I was behind everyone else, trying to catch up. But I never gave up. Instead, I kept showing up sometimes tired, sometimes unsure, but always determined. That determination is something I carry with me every day. It’s the reason I push myself in the gym even when I’m exhausted. It’s the reason I trying to start my own clothing brand, Andraxx, even with limited resources. And it’s the reason I’m excited about starting college full-time.
College, to me, represents a fresh start. It’s not about forgetting the past, but about building something new with everything I’ve learned. I’m excited to be in an environment where I can focus, grow, and explore. I want to study something that challenges me intellectually maybe architecture or biochemistry but I’m also open to discovering new passions along the way. What matters most is that I finally have the space to become the person I know I can be.
I plan to take full advantage of everything college offers not just classes, but mentorships, internships, clubs, and opportunities to lead. I want to meet people from different backgrounds, expand my perspective, and contribute to my community. Most of all, I want to prove to myself and to others that your past doesn’t define you, your choices do.
I may not have had the strongest start in high school, but I’ve learned how to fight for my future. I’ve learned that success isn’t about perfection it’s about persistence. And as I step into this next chapter of my life, I’m more ready than ever to give it everything I’ve got.
