The importance of proper breeding became clear to me when I learned that my dog had a serious heart disease that could have been prevented with better breeding choices. This experience led me to research and become involved in the fascinating and vital world of breeding, which in turn inspired me to pursue a career in animal welfare. I connected with mentors in the American Kennel Club (AKC) dog show community and during my time as an undergraduate competing on my university's welfare team. They helped me learn more about breeding and showed me how I can make a difference as a future veterinarian specializing in reproduction and as a preservation breeder, leading my own breeding program.
Preservation breeding is more than just breeding two dogs registered as the same breed: it’s about maintaining and protecting a breed’s temperament, health, and purpose. Every breeder must carefully consider the individual’s structure, disposition, and health test results, giving each puppy the best chance at a long and healthy life. The responsibility of preserving purebred dogs lies with breeders and veterinary care teams. Reproduction specialists in veterinary medicine can improve animal health by helping owners make informed breeding decisions. Supporting breeders and collaborating with them to make educated choices is the most effective way to influence the next generation of animals.
To achieve my goal of running my own breeding program, I studied pedigrees and connected with fellow breeders whose goals align with mine. They helped me learn about health testing and the steps needed to start a successful, healthy breeding operation. The breed I selected is the Löwchen, a rare and uncommon breed even at AKC events.
Given the low number of Löwchen, the preservation breeders mentoring me are working hard to health test their breeding stock and maintain the traits that make them unique. Their outgoing temperament, good health, non-shedding coat, and small size make them an ideal pet for nearly anyone. For hundreds of years, breeders have worked to preserve these traits through careful and mindful breeding practices. Every dog deserves the care and thought I have observed throughout my time in the dog world. Studying veterinary medicine and working alongside a veterinary reproduction specialist has only deepened my passion and dedication to not only preserve dog breeds but also protect the healthy history of these wonderful companion animals. My focus extends beyond just the dogs already produced; I aim for a future where dogs are mentally stable, healthy, and living in suitable environments.
Receiving this scholarship will help ease the financial burden of vet school, allowing me to focus more on my education and career development. With your support, I will strive not only to become a successful veterinarian but also to make meaningful contributions to the preservation of Löwchen and other dog breeds, ensuring their health for future generations of pet owners and dog lovers.
