I have learned that the struggles we face can shape us into the person we are meant to be. From spending time in and out of foster care to being raised by my grandpa, who battled colon cancer for five years while running an antique furniture store and opening a bar called The Landing Strip, my life has been far from easy. Despite the challenges we faced, my grandpa remained an inspiration to me. I would often sit with him at work after school and on breaks, watching him push through his days gracefully and without complaint. Even after chemo treatments, he would return to work even when he didn't want to. His grit and determination to persevere despite his health condition is what inspired me to pursue all of my dreams, from being a business owner to pursuing higher education in Cyber Security and Information Assurance. My grandpa's passing during my sophomore year of high school struck me in the worst way possible. However, as I grew older, I realized that his legacy of hard work and determination lives on within me. Being raised by a grandparent had a profound effect on my upbringing. My grandpa was more than just a caregiver; he was my mentor and my friend. He taught me the value of hard work, determination, and resilience. Despite the difficulties I faced early on in life, I never lost sight of my goals. I have always been driven and ambitious, and my grandpa's example only further cemented my determination to succeed. This is why I have pursued my hobby of opening a storefront for my detox business, which includes detox water, fresh fruit popsicles, smoothie bowls, and pressed juice. My passion to turn my hobby into a business is rooted in my grandpa's success even through struggle. Over the years, I have worked hard to build my own business, driven by the same entrepreneurial spirit that my grandpa embodied. Despite the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated field, I have never wavered in my pursuit of success. I am constantly seeking out new opportunities to learn and grow, and I am always pushing myself to be the best I can be. My experience of being raised by a grandparent has had a profound impact on my future goals. I am more determined than ever to succeed, not just for myself, but also for my grandpa. His legacy lives on through me, and I am committed to honoring his memory by achieving greatness in everything I do. Ultimately, my story is one of perseverance, determination, and drive. Despite the challenges I faced early on in life, I have never lost sight of my goals. I am grateful for the lessons I learned from my grandpa, and I am committed to using my experiences to inspire and motivate others to pursue their dreams, no matter how difficult the journey may be.

    Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
I remember when I was a little girl, I used to love reading books about technology and imagining all the ways it could change the world. Back then, technology seemed like magic to me. But as I grew up, I realized that technology was not just a tool for entertainment or convenience, but it had the power to change lives, especially for women. One technology that particularly inspires me is the menstrual cup. It may seem like a small thing, but for women who live in poverty or are marginalized, it can make a world of difference. As a woman, I know firsthand how expensive and inconvenient traditional menstrual products can be. For many women around the world, tampons and pads are simply not affordable or available, leading to missed school or work days, health problems, and shame. The menstrual cup is a small, flexible silicone cup that can be inserted to collect menstrual blood. It can be reused for up to ten years, making it a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional menstrual products. But what really inspires me about the menstrual cup is the way it empowers women. In many cultures, menstruation is a taboo subject, and women are shamed for their natural bodily functions. But the menstrual cup is changing that. By providing a discreet and reusable solution, women are no longer forced to hide or feel ashamed about their periods. They can take control of their menstrual health and their lives. What's more, the menstrual cup is often produced by women-led businesses or cooperatives, providing jobs and economic opportunities for women in developing countries. By creating a product that meets the unique needs of women and prioritizes their well-being, these businesses are challenging the male-dominated tech industry and creating a more equitable world. The menstrual cup may not be the most glamorous or high-tech invention out there, but it has the power to improve the lives of millions of women around the world. It is a reminder that technology can be a force for good, and that even small innovations can make a big difference. As a woman, I feel inspired and empowered by the potential of technology to create a more just and equitable world for all.
    Community Reinvestment Grant: Pride Scholarship
As an African American woman who identifies as a lesbian in the LGBTQ community, my lived experiences and personal advocacy has played a crucial role in contributing to change for myself and others in marginalized communities. Growing up in a society that often marginalizes and oppresses people who look and love like me, I have faced countless challenges and discrimination that have shaped my identity and worldview. My journey towards self-acceptance and advocacy began at a young age when I first realized that I was attracted to women. At that time, I had no one to turn to for support or guidance, and I felt completely isolated and alone. However, over time, I began to embrace my identity and connect with other members of the LGBTQ community, who provided me with the love, support, and acceptance that I so desperately needed. As I grew more comfortable with my identity, I became increasingly aware of the systemic barriers and discrimination faced by members of my community. From workplace discrimination to hate crimes and police brutality, LGBTQ people, particularly those of color, are at greater risk for violence and oppression. In response, I began to use my voice and platform to advocate for change and justice for marginalized communities. Whether through community organizing, speaking at rallies, or sharing my story on social media, I have been committed to using my lived experiences to uplift and empower others. Another way that I have contributed to change is by advocating for intersectional approaches to social justice. As an African American lesbian, I recognize that my experiences are shaped not only by my sexual orientation but also by my race and gender. This understanding has led me to work with organizations that prioritize intersectionality and center the experiences of marginalized communities in their work. Through my advocacy, I have pushed for greater inclusion and recognition of the diverse experiences of marginalized communities. Whether it is advocating for the needs of LGBTQ people of color, immigrant communities, or individuals with disabilities, I have been committed to ensuring that all voices are heard and valued in the fight for justice and equality. I have also worked to challenge the societal norms and cultural biases that perpetuate discrimination and prejudice against marginalized communities. This includes advocating for more inclusive education and policies that address systemic inequality and promote greater equity for all individuals. While also advocating for greater access to healthcare and resources for LGBTQ people, particularly those who live in rural or underserved communities. Through community outreach and education, I have worked to connect LGBTQ individuals with the resources and support they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives. My personal experiences and advocacy have contributed to a broader movement toward greater acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ people and other marginalized communities. While there is still much work to be done, I am proud to have played a role in this ongoing struggle for justice and equality. I hope that my efforts, and those of others like me, will continue to inspire future generations to fight for a more just and equitable world for all.

By actively seeking out and hiring individuals from diverse backgrounds, tech companies could benefit from a broader range of perspectives and ideas, ultimately leading to better products and services for all consumers. The benefits of diversity in the tech industry are clear, but achieving true diversity and inclusivity will require a concerted effort on the part of the industry. I firmly believe that the tech industry has a social and moral obligation to be inclusive to all consumers. Technology is an integral part of our daily lives, and as such, it should be accessible to everyone, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status. By embracing diversity and actively working towards inclusivity, the tech industry can create products and services that better reflect the needs and experiences of all consumers. As an aspiring tech professional, I am committed to being a part of the solution to the industry's diversity problem. Through continued education, networking, and mentorship, I hope to contribute to a more diverse and inclusive tech industry that truly reflects the needs and experiences of all individuals. The "Black Girls Code" app inspired me to pursue my passion for technology and advocate for diversity and inclusivity in the industry. I have learned that there is a place for individuals like myself in the tech industry, and I am committed to using my skills and talents to make a difference. In conclusion, the tech industry has a diversity problem that needs to be addressed. By actively seeking out and hiring individuals from diverse backgrounds, the industry can benefit from a broader range of perspectives and ideas, ultimately leading to better products and services for all consumers. As an aspiring tech professional, I am committed to being a part of the solution and contributing to a more diverse and inclusive tech industry that truly reflects the needs and experiences of all individuals. The "Black Girls Code" app has inspired me to pursue my passion for technology and advocate for diversity and inclusivity in the industry.

I also make sure to follow up with any concerns they may have, and work with them to find solutions to any problems they may be facing. Implement anti-bullying policies: I make sure to have clear and concise anti-bullying policies in place that outline what bullying is and what actions will be taken if it occurs. I also educate the youth about these policies and make sure they understand the consequences of bullying. Foster a positive and inclusive environment: I work to create a positive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. This can be done through activities that promote teamwork and collaboration, as well as through open and honest communication. I also make sure to address any instances of exclusion or discrimination that may occur, and work to create a culture of inclusivity. Empower youth to be allies: I encourage youth to become allies to their peers who may be experiencing bullying. This can be done through programs that promote empathy, kindness, and respect for others. I also encourage youth to speak up if they see bullying taking place and to stand up for their peers who may be experiencing it. Provide support and resources: I make sure that youth who are experiencing bullying have access to the support and resources they need. This can include counseling services, peer support groups, and educational resources. I also work with parents and caregivers to ensure that they have the tools and resources they need to support their children through the experience of bullying. Encourage reporting and intervention: I encourage youth to report any incidents of bullying that they witness or experience. I also make sure to intervene in a timely and appropriate manner, working with the youth involved to find a solution that addresses the problem while also considering the well-being of all parties involved. In conclusion, addressing bullying in youth requires a multi-faceted approach that involves education, open communication, clear policies, a positive and inclusive environment, empowerment, and support. By taking these steps, I can help create a safe and supportive environment for all youth and help prevent the negative impact that bullying can have on their mental and emotional well-being.
