Like I was invisible most of my childhood. That wasn’t the true reality though. My family including my grandmother who I loved with were trying to PROVIDE!! Which was their way of proving the unconditional love they had for me and my siblings. They didn’t exactly have time to sit and chat. The light bill has to be paid, school shopping and grocery shopping had to be done and dinner had to be cooked. It took a while but I can say I am appreciative of the hard work and dedication my family had in order to raise me. I think that when you come from where I’m from you lose a will to do better because when you look around you don’t see better. All you know is SURVIVE!! Which is why I am dedicating my life(even though I’m only 29), to make sure I can eliminate the unstable environmental issues in my community! Kids have views and ideas that I believe need to heard! If I could make a way to build a community center that is solely dedicated to the achievement and goals of the youth in my community I feel as though I’ve accomplished all that I need to! Not to mention I have 2 children myself(lol)! All in all I would be delighted to receive this scholarship it would definitely be for a GOOD cause. Thank you for your time, sincerely Jessica Henry.

My mother always told me good things come to those who wait. At age 16 I found myself running in the fast lanes. I dropped out of school started smoking marijuana and mixed with the wrong crowds. Eventually I fell victim to human trafficking. Being young, naive and homeless could have been the recipe to a tall tale that many children living in poverty fall victim to. Life had a different plan for me. I went back to school, I received a G.E.D. and am currently working with non profits to help other young women escape human trafficking! I am attending college now. My major is AS Business Administration. My dream is to create a place where victims of domestic abuse, incest, and who’s family can’t support them financially to come and receive the resources needed to not run to the streets. The resources would consist of job training, counseling, sheltering run aways, and helping young students stay in school! I want to strive to be the best so that I can give my best! Many times I find myself counting my blessings. There were many times while I was sleeping at the bus stop that I realized I could die if I didn’t get enough food to eat or shelter. I didn’t understand how a honor roll student could become homeless. Then I realized nothing in life is with out reason. I didn’t have the correct resources in my neighborhood. I was easily influenced by the wrong things because there wasn’t enough right things to persuade me into another lifestyle. I grew up with gun violence, police brutality and most importantly POVERTY! My mother was serving her country in the US Army. Although she provided as much as she could, my father was absent most of my life! I felt as though no one could hear me.
