We often speak of donating our resources and efforts to the community to improve the well-being of our local area and foster a stronger environment. While this is important to contribute, the aspect of community service that resonates with me the most is the impact of love and care. A public servant leader strives to serve others through compassion and empathy to ensure the growth of one’s community. While obtaining my goals is important to me, aiding others in reaching their full potential fills my heart.
I will never forget that one day I volunteered at the McKinley Outreach Center a couple of years ago. They had me go to the playroom to help with the children, and I was initially confused about what my purpose was being there. But within minutes, I saw a little girl playing alone. I sat next to her, introduced myself, and asked if I could join her. Her eyes lit up as I picked up the Barbie lying next to her; she giggled and led the story we were creating. We weren't just playing but creating a world of endless possibilities within reach. Her face expressed pure joy in having companionship and feeling a small act of love. Her mother came to pick her up, and she pleaded with her mom to stay a little longer. I was amazed at how the time had flown because I had been ready to sit there for hours. Her mother chuckled and thanked me. Her “thank you” carried a weight far greater than two syllables. She expressed relief, fulfillment, and appreciation that though it was for a short while, her daughter could play, have a safe space to laugh, and be a child. Her smile told me that the days aren't so bad when small acts of compassion, shared bonds, and new relationships appear in the lives of her and her daughter. Our brief interaction held a reassurance that she is a good mother, carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders for her little girl, and that though times may be tough, there is still hope within them. Donating money, food, and education proves to be an effective and impactful act of service. However, a great gift can be as simple as quality time, conversation, genuineness, kindness, and love.
I think back to when I renovated a playground and painted a park bench for a poor area in Toledo. Amidst the toil, I imagined the smiles on the children’s faces as they played, free to enjoy a joyful childhood. Or while wrapping gifts for the young ones at the Laura’s Home Shelter, I envisioned their happy screams that “Santa came!” as they ecstatically ripped through the same wrapping I taped together with love and fragility. I could feel the fulfillment that the many single mothers felt, that they could give their babies what they deserved. When volunteering, I always ensure not to overlook the little things: minuscule compliments, minor questions, quick smiles, fun banter, and laughter at jokes. The little things motivate one to keep pursuing big goals and not to give up. These experiences shaped my belief that leadership is centered around public service to the community, a principle I intend to uphold throughout my career and life.
To further this commitment, my future educational plans begin with obtaining a bachelor's degree in Business and Marketing, enabling me to continue contributing to my local community. My education will equip me to enhance nonprofit organizations by managing budgets, leading fundraising efforts, and increasing overall efficiency. I plan to apply these strategies to secure funding and ensure the sustainability of these programs.
After obtaining my Master's in Business Administration, I intend to pursue a higher-level job within a corporation. I will utilize my influential position to assist in employing those who may struggle to find a job due to finances, past experiences, or circumstances beyond their control. Not only will this benefit the company by introducing brilliant minds, fresh perspectives, and new ideas, but it will also provide a safe outlet and new opportunities to those in need, allowing them to excel and contribute to their full potential. When I am outspoken and confident about these ideas, I ensure that progression is made and guarantee help for those who need it.
Furthermore, I would provide internships and mentorships for younger kids interested in pursuing a business career. These uniquely crafted prospects will give them experience before entering the workforce and, more importantly, teach them the value of empathy and contribution to society beyond oneself. Regarding the marketing aspect of my degree, I will openly promote and advertise local ethical practices, such as fair wages and environmentally friendly measures in my workplace and beyond. Vocality of equity and fairness ensures that the small things are not overlooked and benefits employees and consumers as a whole.
If put in management or leadership, the needs and well-being of others come first, before profits, promotions, or power. Gratitude, smiles, joy, and love cannot be bought. True success is not measured by education, wealth, or prestige but by the lives we touch. Because what is my life if not dedicated to serving God and others? I hope to lead with purpose and compassion, ensuring that my career reflects my devotion to uplifting and serving those around me.
