A Grandmother's Love Single Mom Scholarship
As a single mother of two amazing children, Andree and Amari, pursuing higher education while working full time has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. Every day, I balance the responsibilities of being a mother, a full-time school district employee, a college student, and an active parent involved in my children’s education and activities. Although the journey is not easy, it has strengthened my determination to create a better future for my family. I work full time for a school district, a career that I truly value because it allows me to make a positive impact on students while providing for my own children. However, balancing a full-time job with college coursework requires careful planning and constant sacrifice. My workday does not end when I leave the office. Once I pick up my children, my focus shifts completely to being a mom. My son, Andree, is active in both baseball and boxing. I make every effort to attend his practices, games, and competitions because I want him to know that I will always support his passions and dreams. My daughter, Amari, attends preschool and is at an age where she needs my attention, encouragement, and guidance every day. Being present for both of my children is incredibly important to me, even when my schedule feels overwhelming. In addition to work, school, and parenting, I volunteer at my children’s school whenever I have the opportunity. Whether I am helping with classroom activities, school events, or other volunteer opportunities, I believe it is important to stay involved in their education. I want my children to see that education extends beyond the classroom and that giving back to our school community matters. Even though volunteering often means giving up what little free time I have, I know these moments make a positive difference in my children’s lives. The biggest challenge I face is finding enough time for my own education. Most evenings are spent helping my children with their routines, preparing meals, getting everything ready for the next day, and making sure they have the attention they deserve. It is only after they are asleep that I begin my own homework. Many nights I stay awake until late at night completing assignments, studying for exams, and working on projects. There are times when I feel physically exhausted from the lack of sleep, but I remind myself why I started this journey. Every assignment I complete and every class I pass brings me one step closer to reaching my goals. Being a single mother means there is no one else to share the daily responsibilities. I manage our household, finances, transportation, appointments, and every unexpected challenge that comes our way. There are days when I question whether I have enough time or energy to do it all, but I continue moving forward because my children are watching. I want them to grow up knowing that obstacles should never define their future and that perseverance can overcome even the hardest circumstances. Despite these hardships, I remain committed to my education because I know it will open doors to greater opportunities. Earning my degree will allow me to continue growing professionally within education, provide greater financial stability for my family, and build a future where my children have every opportunity to succeed. More importantly, I hope my journey teaches Andree and Amari that dreams are worth pursuing, even when the road is difficult. My children are my greatest motivation. They inspire me to keep going on the nights when I am tired, the mornings when I have little sleep, and the days when balancing everything feels impossible. I want them to remember not only that their mother earned a college degree, but also that she never gave up. Every sacrifice I make today is an investment in their future and a reminder that with determination, resilience, and hard work, anything is possible
    Ruthie Brown Scholarship
I do have existing student loan debt from my earlier attempt at college. I originally began my degree with strong motivation, but I had to step away when I became a mother and faced significant financial challenges, including childcare costs and the need to support my household. At that time, continuing my education became impossible, and I was unable to complete my program. As a result, I now carry student loan debt from that period while working full time and raising my two children. Returning to college has given me a new perspective on both my education and my financial responsibilities. I am now approaching my student loan debt with structure, accountability, and long-term planning. My priority is to complete my degree in accounting so that I can increase my earning potential and create greater financial stability for my family. I currently work full time in a school district in a financial support role, and I plan to continue working while completing my studies to ensure I have a steady income to manage my responsibilities. In terms of repayment, I am committed to making consistent, manageable monthly payments based on my income. I carefully budget my household expenses to ensure that I can meet my obligations, including my student loan payments, while still supporting my children’s needs. Although balancing work, parenting, and education is challenging, I have learned to be disciplined with my finances and intentional with my spending. At the same time, I am actively seeking scholarships and financial aid opportunities to reduce additional borrowing as I continue my education. My goal is to minimize any new student loan debt and rely as much as possible on grants, scholarships, and my employment income to fund my degree. I understand the importance of borrowing responsibly and am focused on limiting financial strain while I complete my education. Long term, I plan to pursue a career in accounting within a school district or public sector organization. This career path will allow me to build financial stability and significantly improve my ability to manage and pay down my existing student loan debt. Increasing my income through education is a key part of my repayment strategy and will allow me to become more financially secure over time. While my journey has included setbacks, I am now fully committed to moving forward with discipline and purpose. I view my student loan debt as part of my educational journey—one that I am actively working to manage responsibly while building a stronger future for myself and my children.
Learner Online Learning Innovator Scholarship for Veterans
As a full-time employee, single mother of two, and college student, online tools and technology have become essential to my educational journey. Without them, balancing work, family responsibilities, and school would be nearly impossible. Technology has not only helped me continue my education but has also allowed me to apply what I learn in real-world situations every day. One of the most important tools I use is my college's online learning platform. It allows me to access assignments, participate in discussions, submit coursework, and communicate with instructors on a schedule that works around my responsibilities as a working parent. Many evenings, after putting my children to bed, I log in to complete assignments and review course materials. The flexibility provided by online learning has made it possible for me to continue pursuing my degree despite having a busy and demanding schedule. I also use educational resources such as YouTube, Google Scholar, and online tutorials to deepen my understanding of course topics. When I encounter a concept that is difficult to understand, I often search for additional explanations, videos, or examples that break the material down into manageable pieces. These resources allow me to learn at my own pace and reinforce concepts that I can later apply in both my coursework and professional life. Another valuable tool has been ChatGPT. As a returning college student, there are times when I need help understanding complex concepts, organizing my thoughts, or improving my writing. ChatGPT serves as a learning companion that helps me think critically, develop ideas, and gain confidence in my academic work. Rather than simply providing answers, it helps me better understand information and become a stronger student. In my professional role, technology allows me to apply many of the skills I am learning in college. Programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other digital collaboration tools help me stay organized, communicate effectively, and manage multiple responsibilities. The ability to connect classroom learning with practical workplace applications has strengthened both my academic performance and professional development. Technology has also helped me develop important skills beyond the classroom, including time management, problem-solving, adaptability, and digital literacy. These skills are essential in today's workforce and have prepared me to continue growing both personally and professionally. As a first-generation college student, returning to school while raising children and working full-time has not been easy. However, online platforms and educational technology have made higher education more accessible and achievable. They have given me the flexibility to continue learning while fulfilling my responsibilities as a parent and provider. Most importantly, these tools have helped me move closer to my goal of earning a college degree and creating a better future for my family. Every online lecture, research article, discussion board, and digital resource has played a role in helping me overcome obstacles and continue pursuing my dreams. Technology has transformed the way I learn, and it continues to empower me to turn knowledge into meaningful action in both my education and everyday life.
    Hines Scholarship
Most college students do their homework alone. I do mine at the kitchen table beside my children. While my son Andree works on his school assignments and my daughter Amari colors or practices her letters, I am often completing discussion boards, studying for exams, or writing papers for my college classes. In those moments, we are all students together. Going to college means much more to me than earning a degree. It represents opportunity, sacrifice, and the future I am building for my family. As a single mother of two children, working full-time while attending school full-time has not been easy. There are days when I leave for work before sunrise and continue studying long after my children have gone to bed. The responsibilities can feel overwhelming, but every challenge reminds me why I started this journey. Growing up, higher education often felt like something that happened to other people. Life has a way of presenting obstacles that can make long-term goals seem impossible. Financial responsibilities, parenting, and work commitments could have easily convinced me that college was out of reach. Instead, those challenges became my motivation. I am pursuing higher education because I want to create opportunities that will extend far beyond myself. I want my children to see that goals are worth pursuing, even when the path is difficult. I want them to understand that determination can overcome circumstances. Every class I complete is not only an investment in my future, but also a lesson for them about perseverance and resilience. As a Latina woman and a first-generation college student, earning a degree carries special meaning. I understand the barriers that many underrepresented students face. There are moments when balancing work, school, and family feels impossible. Yet those experiences have strengthened my belief that education remains one of the most powerful tools for creating change. My goal is not simply to earn a diploma. I want to use my education to increase my impact in my career, better serve my community, and provide stability and opportunity for my family. I hope to demonstrate that success is not determined by where you begin, but by your willingness to keep moving forward despite obstacles. When my children look back on these years, I do not want them to remember how hard I worked. I want them to remember what that hard work taught them: that dreams are achievable, education matters, and perseverance can change the course of a family’s future. For me, college represents possibility. It is the bridge between where I am today and the life I am working to create not only for myself, but for the generations that will follow.

Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My long-term goal is to earn my business degree and build a stable, successful career that allows me to provide financial security and a better future for my children. As a single mother of two working full-time, returning to college has required sacrifice, planning, and determination. Although my educational path was interrupted years ago when I became pregnant and needed to help support my family, I never stopped believing in the value of education or my ability to achieve more. I chose the business field because I want a career that offers growth, leadership opportunities, and long-term stability. Over the years, balancing work, parenting, and financial responsibilities has taught me skills that directly connect to business, including organization, communication, time management, adaptability, and problem-solving. These experiences have motivated me to continue my education so I can grow professionally and create more opportunities for my family. My immediate goal is to successfully complete my degree while continuing to work full-time and support my children. To achieve this, I have created a structured plan that allows me to balance my responsibilities effectively. I currently maintain full-time employment, which helps me cover essential living expenses such as housing, food, transportation, childcare, and school-related costs. Because my income is limited, careful budgeting is extremely important. My financial plan includes applying for scholarships, grants, and federal financial aid through FAFSA to reduce out-of-pocket education expenses. Scholarships such as this one would help cover tuition, books, technology needs, and transportation costs related to school. I also plan to continue using community college resources, academic advising, tutoring services, and flexible class scheduling to stay on track academically while managing my responsibilities as a parent and employee. Time management is one of the most important parts of my plan. I organize my weekly schedule carefully around work, parenting, and coursework. I dedicate evenings and weekends to studying and completing assignments while ensuring my children remain my priority. Although balancing everything can be challenging, I have learned how to stay disciplined and focused on long-term goals rather than temporary obstacles. In addition to earning my degree, I hope to continue advancing professionally and eventually move into leadership or administrative roles where I can make a positive impact within my workplace and community. My education will provide me with the knowledge and confidence to pursue higher-paying opportunities and create greater stability for my family. Most importantly, my goal is to show my children that perseverance and hard work can overcome difficult circumstances. I want them to grow up understanding that education creates opportunities and that setbacks do not define a person’s future. Returning to school as an adult and single mother has already taught me the importance of resilience, commitment, and believing in yourself even when the journey is difficult. This scholarship would not only support my educational goals financially, but it would also support a mother who is determined to build a better future through education, discipline, and hard work. My plan is clear: continue working hard, complete my degree step by step, advance professionally, and create lasting opportunities for my children and future generations of my family.
    Minority Single Mother Scholarship
My journey as a 31-year-old single mother of two pursuing higher education has been shaped by resilience, sacrifice, and a deep desire to create a better future for my family. I am a first-generation college student and an immigrant, which means much of my educational journey has required me to navigate systems without clear guidance or support. Returning to school was not something I was able to do immediately after high school. Like many in my position, I had to step away from my education to work, support my family, and focus on survival and responsibility. The most challenging part of this journey has been balance. As a single mother to my children, Amari and Andree, my days are filled with constant responsibility. I am managing parenting, schoolwork, household duties, and financial pressures all at once. There are moments when I feel mentally and physically exhausted, and it can feel overwhelming trying to be fully present in every role I carry. I often study late at night after my children are asleep, trying to make every minute count. Despite the exhaustion, I remind myself that every sacrifice is building a better future for them. My son Andree, who is 10 years old, plays baseball and practices or has games five days a week. Supporting him in this journey is very important to me. I make it a priority to keep him on this path because it is teaching him discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and structure. I want him to grow up understanding that commitment matters—not just in sports, but in education and life. Watching his dedication motivates me even more to stay consistent with my own goals, because I want to show him through my actions what perseverance looks like. Financial stress has also been a major challenge. Like many adult students, I am managing tuition, childcare, and everyday living expenses while trying to stay focused on my education. These pressures can feel heavy at times, but they also strengthen my determination to succeed. I know that completing my education is one of the most important steps toward long-term stability for my family. Another challenge has been overcoming self-doubt. After being away from school for years, I questioned whether I could return and succeed academically. Over time, I have learned that my life experience is not a setback—it is a strength. It has taught me patience, discipline, and resilience in ways that continue to shape who I am as a student and a mother. Despite these challenges, this journey has been deeply fulfilling. One of the most meaningful parts has been being a role model for Amari and Andree. I want them to see that education is powerful, effort matters, and it is never too late to pursue your goals. Ultimately, I am not only pursuing a degree—I am building a future for my children and showing them that with dedication and love, it is possible to overcome obstacles and succeed.
    Harry & Mary Sheaffer Scholarship
I will use my unique experiences, skills, and perspective as a college-bound student from an immigrant family to help build a more empathetic and understanding global community by focusing on connection, communication, and service. My background has taught me that empathy is not just about feeling for others, but about actively understanding their circumstances and responding in ways that make their lives easier and more supported. One of my strengths is my ability to navigate different environments and roles. Growing up, I often had to act as a bridge between my family and systems such as schools, paperwork, and services due to language and cultural barriers. This experience developed my communication skills, patience, and ability to explain complex information in a simple and supportive way. I plan to use this skill to help others who may feel overwhelmed or excluded, especially students and families who are new to educational or professional systems. By making information more accessible and easier to understand, I can help reduce confusion and stress while building trust. Another important skill I bring is resilience. My experiences have taught me how to keep moving forward even when challenges feel overwhelming. I have learned to adapt, stay focused on my goals, and support others at the same time. I want to use this resilience to encourage people who may feel discouraged in their own journeys. Whether through mentorship, tutoring, or community involvement, I hope to show others that setbacks do not define their future and that persistence can lead to growth and opportunity. I also value listening as a powerful tool for empathy. Many people simply need someone who will take the time to understand their story without judgment. I want to use my ability to listen and connect with others to create safe spaces where people feel heard and respected. This is especially important in diverse communities where language, culture, or background can sometimes create distance between individuals. Through education and future career opportunities, I plan to expand these skills and apply them in larger ways—whether in education, community service, or technology that supports accessibility and learning. My goal is to help create systems that are not only efficient, but also compassionate and inclusive. Ultimately, I hope to contribute to a global community where differences are understood rather than feared, and where people support one another through shared respect and empathy. By using my experiences, communication skills, and resilience, I want to help build a world where more people feel seen, valued, and empowered to succeed.

Marcus Aurelius’ statement, “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one,” reflects a central idea in Stoic philosophy: moral understanding is meaningless without action. The underlying meaning of this passage is that virtue is not an abstract topic for debate or intellectual display, but a lived practice demonstrated through behavior, discipline, and consistency. Marcus Aurelius is not rejecting reflection or philosophy itself, but rather warning against the human tendency to replace action with endless discussion. His message is that moral character is proven, not defined, and that the true measure of a person lies in what they do rather than what they claim to understand. At the core of this passage is the Stoic belief that virtue is the highest good. For Marcus Aurelius, being a “good man” is not about reputation, status, or theoretical knowledge. Instead, it is about living in alignment with reason, justice, and self-control. When he says, “Waste no more time arguing,” he is pointing out a common form of avoidance: people often debate ethics, criticize others, or philosophize about ideals while avoiding the difficult work of embodying those ideals themselves. In this way, argument becomes a distraction from responsibility. Marcus Aurelius urges the reader to shift from intellectual consumption to personal accountability. The phrase “Be one” is intentionally direct and commanding. It removes ambiguity and excuses. There is no instruction manual provided because Stoicism assumes that the principles of virtue are already known. What is missing is not knowledge but discipline. The simplicity of the phrase reinforces the idea that moral action should be immediate and practical. A person does not need perfect conditions or further debate to begin acting with integrity, patience, or fairness. Instead, they must choose to act in accordance with those values in ordinary, everyday situations. This passage also challenges the gap between identity and behavior. Many people define themselves by what they believe or intend rather than what they consistently do. Marcus Aurelius collapses this separation by implying that identity is formed through action. A “good man” is not someone who identifies as good or understands goodness theoretically, but someone who repeatedly chooses good actions even when it is inconvenient or difficult. This perspective removes the comfort of self-deception. It forces individuals to measure themselves honestly based on their conduct. Additionally, the passage reflects Marcus Aurelius’ role as both philosopher and emperor. As a ruler of one of the most powerful empires in history, he was constantly surrounded by political debate, advice, and competing ideologies. His statement suggests a rejection of excessive deliberation in favor of moral decisiveness. In leadership as in personal life, overthinking can delay justice, compassion, and responsibility. By emphasizing action over argument, he highlights the urgency of ethical behavior in real-world situations where delays can have consequences. Ultimately, Marcus Aurelius is teaching that philosophy is incomplete unless it is practiced. The value of understanding what is right lies in the willingness to do what is right. His message remains relevant because modern life often encourages intellectual discussion without accountability. People debate ethics online, share opinions, and analyze behavior, yet often fail to translate those ideas into personal change. This passage disrupts that pattern by demanding immediate alignment between belief and action. In conclusion, “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one,” is a call to embody virtue rather than merely define it. Marcus Aurelius emphasizes that moral excellence is not achieved through endless discussion but through consistent, disciplined action. The underlying meaning is a challenge to every reader: stop postponing ethical behavior in pursuit of perfect understanding, and instead live as the person you already know you should be.
    Dinakara Rao Memorial Scholarship
As a first-generation student, my educational journey has been shaped by determination, resilience, and learning how to navigate systems without always having a clear roadmap. Growing up, higher education was something I understood as important, but not something I had direct guidance or support to navigate. Much of what I have learned about college, career pathways, and financial aid has come through personal experience, research, and trial and error. Because of this, my journey has required me to be resourceful and persistent, even when I felt unsure or overwhelmed. Being a first-generation student also means that every step forward carries deeper meaning. It is not just about my own success, but about setting an example for my children and creating opportunities that were not always easily accessible in my family. As a single mother of two, I carry both responsibility and motivation with me every day. My children are my biggest inspiration—they remind me why education matters and why continuing to push forward is worth it, even during challenging times. My motivation for pursuing my chosen career path in education and healthcare comes directly from my lived experiences. I have seen firsthand how important support systems are for individuals and families, whether in a classroom or in a healthcare setting. As someone who has navigated challenges such as financial hardship, communication barriers, and personal loss, I understand how overwhelming life can feel without proper guidance and support. These experiences have inspired me to want to become someone who provides that support to others. In education, I want to help students feel seen, understood, and capable of success, especially those who may come from backgrounds similar to mine. I understand how powerful it is when a teacher believes in a student who may not yet believe in themselves. In healthcare, I am drawn to the idea of providing compassionate care, clear communication, and advocacy for patients who may feel unheard or intimidated in medical environments. In both fields, my goal is to serve others with empathy, patience, and understanding. Being a first-generation student has taught me that success is not always a straight path. It requires persistence, adaptability, and the courage to keep going even when the process is unfamiliar. Despite the challenges, I am proud of how far I have come, and I am even more motivated to continue my education so I can build a stable future for my family while making a positive impact in my community. Ultimately, my story is one of perseverance and purpose. I am pursuing higher education not only to achieve personal and professional goals, but also to break cycles, create opportunity, and inspire my children and others to believe that their circumstances do not define their future.
Patricia Lindsey Jackson Foundation - Eva Mae Jackson Scholarship of Education
Faith plays an important role in my life by giving me strength, hope, and a sense of direction during both difficult and uncertain times. While my faith is personal, it has helped me stay grounded when I have faced challenges such as financial struggles, personal loss, and the responsibilities of being a single mother. In moments when I felt overwhelmed or unsure about the future, my faith reminded me to keep going and to trust that my efforts would lead me toward something better. It has helped me develop patience and resilience, especially when progress in my academic journey felt slow or difficult. My faith also influences how I treat others. It reminds me to lead with compassion, humility, and understanding. These values have shaped my desire to pursue a career in education and healthcare, where I can support people in meaningful ways. I want to be someone who brings encouragement and positivity into the lives of others, especially those who may be struggling or feel unseen. My faith has taught me that small acts of kindness and service can make a lasting difference. In addition to my faith, my children are my greatest motivation for pursuing higher education. As a single mother of two, I want to show them that it is never too late to work toward your goals. I want them to see that education is a powerful tool for creating stability, opportunity, and independence. Every step I take in my academic journey is not only for my own growth, but also to build a stronger future for them. They inspire me to keep pushing forward, even when life is challenging. Another major influence in my decision to pursue higher education is my personal life experiences. Coming from a background where I had to step away from college after high school to work and support my family, I understand the sacrifices that come with prioritizing responsibility over personal goals. Now, I feel ready to return to school with a renewed sense of purpose, maturity, and determination. I am excited and motivated to continue my education and complete what I started, while also building a career that allows me to give back to my community. Ultimately, my faith, my children, and my life experiences have all played a role in pushing me toward higher education. They have taught me resilience, responsibility, and hope for the future. I am committed to continuing my education so I can create a better life for myself and my children while also making a positive impact on others. Women in Healthcare Scholarship
I have chosen to pursue a degree in healthcare because I am deeply passionate about helping others, supporting families during vulnerable moments, and being part of a field that directly improves people’s quality of life. My experiences as an immigrant, a single mother, and someone who has faced personal and family health challenges have shown me how important compassionate and accessible healthcare truly is. I have seen firsthand how overwhelming it can be when families are dealing with medical concerns, especially while also managing financial stress, language barriers, and lack of access to clear information. These experiences inspired me to want to be part of a system that provides not only treatment, but also understanding and support. Healthcare, to me, is more than a career—it is a commitment to service. I want to be someone who helps patients feel seen, heard, and respected during some of the most stressful moments in their lives. I am especially drawn to working with individuals who may feel intimidated or misunderstood in medical settings. I understand how powerful it can be when a healthcare professional takes the time to listen carefully, explain things clearly, and treat each patient with dignity, regardless of their background or circumstances. In addition, my personal life has taught me the importance of resilience and emotional strength. Navigating challenges has helped me develop patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure—qualities that are essential in healthcare. I have learned that even small acts of kindness and clear communication can significantly reduce a person’s fear or anxiety when dealing with health issues. I want to bring that same mindset into my future career. As a woman in the healthcare field, I hope to make a positive impact by bringing compassion, cultural awareness, and strong communication into every interaction. I want to be an advocate for patients, especially women, children, and underserved communities who may not always feel represented or prioritized in healthcare systems. I believe that representation matters, and I want to be someone who helps bridge gaps in understanding and trust between providers and patients. I also hope to contribute to improving health education and awareness in the communities I serve. Many health issues can be improved or even prevented when people have access to accurate information and resources. I want to help empower patients to take an active role in their health by ensuring they fully understand their conditions, treatment options, and preventive care. Education, in this sense, becomes a powerful tool for long-term wellness. Ultimately, my goal is to use my healthcare degree to create meaningful and lasting impact in people’s lives. I want to be part of a field that not only treats illness, but also promotes dignity, prevention, and hope. As a woman in healthcare, I hope to lead with empathy, strength, and dedication, serving as a source of support and reassurance for every patient and family I have the opportunity to care for.
    Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
I am a fan of Sabrina Carpenter because her music feels both honest and comforting, and it has become something I often turn to when I need to relax and reset. Her songs have a way of blending emotional storytelling with catchy, calming melodies, which makes them easy to listen to during everyday moments like driving, studying, or unwinding after a long day. For me, her music creates a sense of peace and familiarity that helps me slow down and breathe. What I appreciate most about Sabrina Carpenter’s career is how she has grown and evolved over time. She has shown that it is possible to develop your voice as an artist while staying true to yourself. Her lyrics often reflect real emotions—relationships, self-reflection, confidence, and vulnerability—in a way that feels relatable and human. Listening to her music reminds me that it is okay to feel a wide range of emotions and that those feelings can be expressed creatively rather than ignored or pushed aside. Her career has also impacted me by encouraging me to make time for relaxation and self-care through music. As someone who balances many responsibilities, I sometimes forget to slow down. Listening to her songs helps me create small moments of calm in my day where I can decompress and refocus. Music has become a healthy outlet for me, and her work is often part of that experience. Overall, I appreciate Sabrina Carpenter not just as an artist, but as someone whose music supports emotional balance and relaxation in my daily life.
    Love Island Fan Scholarship
ove Island Challenge: “Heart Rate Headquarters” My new Love Island challenge is called “Heart Rate Headquarters,” a dynamic experience designed to test attraction, emotional connection, honesty, and loyalty in a fun but revealing way. The challenge takes place in a tropical-themed “control room” built outdoors on the villa grounds. The setting has a futuristic design, with neon heart monitors, a live DJ booth, and individual stations for each islander. Every contestant wears a heart rate monitor that tracks their emotional and physical responses in real time. A central screen displays live changes so islanders can see reactions unfold as the challenge progresses. The purpose of the challenge is not only to measure physical attraction, but also to explore emotional connections and decision-making under pressure. Islanders go through three structured rounds that reveal different aspects of their relationships. In Round 1: “The Walk-In Effect,” each islander enters the control room alone and is presented with a surprise emotional scenario. This could include watching a heartfelt message from their partner, seeing a “what if” scenario that tests their relationship, or facing an unexpected twist involving a bombshell or ex. The goal is to observe their immediate emotional reaction, measured through their heart rate spikes. In Round 2: “Trust or Temptation,” islanders are forced to choose between two doors. One door represents loyalty, where they experience a romantic moment designed to strengthen their current couple bond. The other door represents temptation, where they interact with a new bombshell designed to test chemistry and attraction. Once chosen, they cannot change their decision, making the experience a true test of loyalty versus curiosity. In Round 3: “Say It or Shake It,” islanders are given thought-provoking prompts about their relationships, such as who they feel most connected to or what they have not yet told their partner. They must either answer honestly or perform a dance challenge to avoid answering. This round encourages vulnerability and communication, which are key elements in real relationships. The final stage, “The Heart Rate Reveal,” brings all islanders together to see the results of the challenge. They discover whose heart rates were most affected by different people, revealing hidden connections and unexpected emotional responses. After this, each islander must make a final decision—either stay loyal to their current partner or explore a new connection based on what was revealed during the challenge. The winner of the challenge earns a special “Heartbeat Date” and receives exclusive insight into who has been thinking about them most in the villa. Overall, “Heart Rate Headquarters” is designed to combine fun, drama, and emotional depth while encouraging islanders to reflect on their true feelings and relationships. It highlights how attraction is not only physical, but also emotional and psychological, making it a memorable and meaningful Love Island challenge.

Cancer has deeply impacted my family in ways that changed how I see life, health, and resilience. When someone in your family is diagnosed with cancer, it affects not only their physical health, but the emotional and financial stability of everyone connected to them. In my family, it brought moments of fear, uncertainty, and helplessness as we tried to understand what was happening and how to support our loved one through treatment and the unknowns that came with it. One of the most difficult parts of the experience was watching someone I love go through physical and emotional changes. There were days filled with hope and strength, and other days where exhaustion and pain made everything feel overwhelming. As a family, we had to learn how to show up for each other in new ways—whether that meant providing transportation to appointments, helping with daily needs, or simply being present during difficult moments. We leaned on each other more than ever, even when we did not have the right words to say. Emotionally, the experience brought a mix of fear, sadness, and sometimes even frustration. It was hard not knowing what the outcome would be or how quickly things could change. At the same time, it taught me how important it is to value time, relationships, and small moments of connection. I learned not to take health or family for granted, because life can change unexpectedly. Through this experience, I also learned a great deal about strength and resilience—not just physical strength, but emotional strength. I saw how important it is to stay hopeful even in uncertain situations and to support one another through both progress and setbacks. It also taught me empathy for others who are going through similar experiences, because you never fully understand the emotional weight of cancer until you experience it within your own family. This experience has influenced my perspective on life and my goals for the future. It has strengthened my desire to pursue higher education and build a career where I can help others, especially families facing hardship or health-related challenges. I want to be someone who understands the importance of support systems and compassion during difficult times. Whether through education, counseling, or community work, I hope to use my experiences to support others in navigating their own struggles with care and understanding. Ultimately, my family’s experience with cancer has taught me that resilience is built through love, support, and hope. It has shaped me into someone who values connection deeply and is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

A meaningful relationship in my life that has shaped who I am today is the relationship I have with my son. Being his parent has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, not only because of the responsibility it carries, but because of the way it has changed how I see growth, patience, and human connection. Through him, I have learned lessons that no classroom or textbook could ever fully teach me. My son has been receiving speech services since Transitional Kindergarten, and his communication journey has deeply influenced me as both a parent and an individual. In the early years, I saw how difficult it was for him to express himself clearly and how frustrating it could be when he felt misunderstood or unable to communicate his thoughts. As a parent, it was painful at times to watch him struggle, especially when I knew he had so much to say but could not always get the words out easily. Those moments taught me empathy in a very real and personal way. Over time, I began to understand that communication is not only about speaking, but about listening, observing, and creating a safe emotional space. I learned to slow down and pay closer attention to nonverbal cues, tone, and effort rather than focusing only on words. I realized that connection happens when a person feels safe enough to try, even if they are not perfect. This shift in perspective changed how I interact not only with my son, but with everyone in my life. As my son continued receiving speech support, I witnessed steady growth in his confidence and communication skills. Even though progress was not always immediate, his persistence stood out to me. He continued to try, practice, and engage even when it felt challenging. Watching him develop resilience at such a young age taught me the importance of encouragement, consistency, and patience. It reminded me that growth looks different for every individual and that progress should be measured by effort as much as outcomes. This relationship has also influenced how I build connections with others. I have become more patient, more understanding, and more intentional in my communication. I no longer assume that silence means disinterest or that difficulty expressing oneself means lack of understanding. Instead, I try to meet people where they are and recognize that everyone has their own way of communicating and processing the world around them. This has made me more compassionate in both personal and academic settings. My son has also deeply influenced my educational and career goals. His journey has strengthened my desire to become an educator who understands that every student is unique. I want to create a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and valued regardless of how they communicate or learn. I hope to be the kind of teacher who recognizes effort, encourages participation in all forms, and helps students build confidence over time. His experience has shown me how powerful early support and patience can be in shaping a child’s future. Because of this relationship, I also value deeper and more meaningful connections with others. I make a conscious effort to be more present in conversations, to listen without judgment, and to understand emotions behind words. I have learned that strong relationships are built on trust, consistency, and empathy over time. Ultimately, my relationship with my son has shaped not only who I am as a parent, but who I am becoming as a person. It has taught me that connection is one of the most powerful tools for growth, and it continues to guide the way I relate to others in every part of my life.

Here is a complete, polished response you can use: --- A person I deeply admire is my son. He is 11 years old and has been receiving speech services since Transitional Kindergarten (TK). Watching his journey has been one of the most meaningful experiences in my life. Early on, he struggled to express himself clearly, and I often saw how frustrated he became when others could not understand him. Speaking in class or in unfamiliar settings was sometimes difficult for him, and it took patience, support, and time for him to build confidence in his communication. Over the years, I have seen tremendous growth in him. With consistent speech support and encouragement from teachers and family, he has developed stronger communication skills and, more importantly, a growing sense of confidence in himself. What I admire most about him is his determination. Even when speech exercises are challenging, he continues to try without giving up. He listens, practices, and keeps pushing forward. His persistence has taught me the importance of patience, consistency, and believing in growth over time. His journey has inspired me to pursue further education because it has shown me how powerful education and early intervention can be in shaping a child’s future. I have witnessed firsthand how the right support can transform frustration into confidence and hesitation into progress. This experience has strengthened my belief that education is not just about academics, but about helping students find their voice and reach their full potential. It has motivated me to continue my own educational path so that I can better support children like my son and advocate for learning environments that meet the needs of all students. My motivation for participating in speech and debate (or mock trial) comes from a desire to grow in confidence and communication skills. For a long time, I have faced challenges speaking in high-pressure or unfamiliar situations, and I understand how important it is to be able to express ideas clearly and confidently. Speech and debate provides an opportunity to practice organizing thoughts, speaking with purpose, and learning how to communicate effectively in structured settings. In addition, I am motivated by the idea of advocacy. These programs teach individuals how to present arguments, listen to different perspectives, and use their voice to create impact. As someone who is passionate about education and supporting students who face communication challenges, I see this as an opportunity to strengthen my ability to speak up for others and for myself. Ultimately, my son’s journey has inspired me to continue my education and become more involved in supporting student growth. His progress reminds me that with patience, support, and determination, every child has the ability to find their voice—and I want to be part of helping make that possible for others as well.

I live with Sickle Cell Disease, and my journey with this condition has shaped my strength, my perspective on life, and my determination to keep moving forward despite challenges. Sickle Cell Disease has impacted my daily life in ways that are both visible and invisible. There are times when pain episodes, fatigue, and unexpected health complications interrupt my routines and make even simple tasks more difficult. These moments require me to slow down, rest, and prioritize my health in ways that others may not always understand. However, over time, I have learned that managing this condition is not only about physical care, but also about emotional resilience and self-awareness. Managing Sickle Cell Disease has taught me the importance of listening to my body and respecting my limits while still staying committed to my goals. I have developed routines that help me maintain my health, such as staying hydrated, avoiding triggers that can lead to pain crises, following medical guidance, and ensuring I get adequate rest when needed. I also stay in regular contact with healthcare providers to monitor my condition and address any complications early. While the condition can be unpredictable, I have learned how to prepare as best as I can and adapt when necessary without losing focus on my long-term goals. Emotionally, living with Sickle Cell Disease has not always been easy. There have been moments of frustration, exhaustion, and discouragement, especially when my health has interfered with school, work, or family responsibilities. However, these experiences have also helped me develop a deep sense of perseverance. I have learned that setbacks do not define my potential. Instead, they have strengthened my commitment to continue pushing forward, even when progress feels slow. My greatest sources of inspiration are my family, especially my children, and my desire to build a more stable and meaningful future for them. As a parent, I want to show my children that challenges do not have to stop them from achieving their dreams. I want them to see that with determination, support, and faith in oneself, it is possible to overcome obstacles and still succeed. This responsibility motivates me to stay focused on my education and career goals, even during difficult times. Education is also a major source of motivation for me. I am pursuing higher education because I want to become an educator and give back to my community, especially students who face their own challenges. Living with Sickle Cell Disease has increased my empathy for others who struggle with health issues, learning differences, or personal hardships. I understand what it feels like to need patience, understanding, and encouragement, and I want to bring those qualities into my future classroom. Ultimately, my journey with Sickle Cell Disease has shaped me into a resilient, determined, and compassionate individual. While it presents ongoing challenges, it has also given me purpose. It drives me to pursue my goals with intention and to create a future where I can support both my family and my community through education, advocacy, and service.
    Dick Loges Veteran Entrepreneur Scholarship
My parent’s military service and entrepreneurial journey have had a meaningful impact on my values, my resilience, and my educational and career goals. Growing up with a veteran parent/guardian taught me early on the importance of discipline, responsibility, and perseverance. Their service demonstrated what it means to commit to something larger than oneself, to work through challenges with structure and determination, and to remain focused even during difficult circumstances. Those lessons have stayed with me and continue to influence how I approach my own education. At the same time, witnessing their transition from military service into entrepreneurship showed me a different but equally powerful kind of strength. Starting and managing a business requires courage, adaptability, and the ability to take risks while facing uncertainty. I saw firsthand how my parent/guardian had to learn new skills, overcome setbacks, and continuously push forward in order to build something sustainable. That experience inspired me to believe that growth is always possible, even when the path is not linear. It also showed me that leadership can take many forms, whether in service, business, or community impact. Their journey has directly influenced my educational goals by motivating me to pursue higher education as a way to build stability and create opportunities for myself and my family. I understand that education is not only about earning a degree, but about developing the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed to navigate life’s challenges. Seeing my parent/guardian balance service, entrepreneurship, and responsibility has encouraged me to approach my own goals with the same level of dedication and long-term thinking. My parent/guardian’s military service also impacted my educational journey by instilling a strong sense of structure and perseverance. I learned the importance of showing up consistently, staying committed even when things are difficult, and respecting the process of growth. However, I also recognize that military life and transitions can come with challenges, including financial strain, relocation, or periods of instability. These experiences helped me understand the value of education as a foundation that can provide direction and opportunity, even during uncertain times. Because of their example, I am motivated to pursue a career in education where I can support others in building their own futures. I want to help students, especially those from diverse or challenging backgrounds, recognize their potential and stay committed to their goals. Just as my parent/guardian’s journey taught me resilience and ambition, I hope to pass those same values on to others through my work. Ultimately, my parent/guardian’s military and entrepreneurial experiences have shaped who I am today. They have taught me that success requires discipline, adaptability, and perseverance, and that education is one of the most powerful tools for creating lasting change in one’s life and community.
    Selective Mutism Step Forward Scholarship
My experience with selective mutism has had a profound impact on how I see myself, how I communicate, and how I interact with the world around me. At different points in my life, I have struggled with the inability to speak in certain situations, especially in environments that felt unfamiliar, overwhelming, or high-pressure. Even when I had thoughts and ideas I wanted to share, I often felt physically blocked from expressing them. This created moments of frustration, isolation, and misunderstanding, as others sometimes interpreted my silence as lack of understanding or confidence. Over time, I began to understand that selective mutism is not a reflection of intelligence or capability, but rather a response to anxiety and emotional overwhelm. Learning this helped me reframe my experience and approach communication with more patience toward myself. I have had to develop alternative ways to express myself, such as writing, nonverbal communication, and slowly building trust in environments where I feel safe. While it has not always been easy, these experiences have taught me resilience and self-awareness. Living with selective mutism has also shaped my empathy toward others, especially students and individuals who struggle to express themselves verbally. I understand how important it is for educators, peers, and communities to create environments where communication is not rushed or forced, but supported in different forms. I have learned that every person communicates differently, and that silence does not mean absence of thought or understanding. This perspective has strengthened my desire to support others, especially in educational settings. Pursuing higher education is very important to me because it represents both personal growth and long-term stability for my family. As someone who has faced communication challenges and other life obstacles, continuing my education is a way for me to prove to myself that I am capable of achieving my goals despite difficulties. Higher education gives me the opportunity to develop skills, gain knowledge, and build a career where I can make a meaningful impact, particularly in education and student support services. I am especially motivated to pursue higher education because I want to become an educator who understands diverse learning and communication needs. My goal is to create classrooms where students feel safe, respected, and supported, regardless of how they express themselves. I want to be the kind of teacher who recognizes potential beyond verbal participation and who encourages all students to find their own voice, whether spoken, written, or expressed in other ways. In addition, higher education is essential for improving my financial situation and creating more opportunities for my children. As a single mother, I want to set an example that education can open doors and create a better future, even when circumstances are challenging. The process of earning a degree is not just about personal achievement—it is about building stability, independence, and the ability to give back to my community in a stronger way. Overall, my experience with selective mutism has shaped my identity, strengthened my resilience, and deepened my desire to pursue higher education. It has taught me patience, empathy, and determination—qualities I will carry with me as I continue working toward my academic and career goals.
Special Needs Advocacy Inc. Kathleen Lehman Memorial Scholarship
I am a dedicated student pursuing a career in education, with a strong passion for serving students who need additional academic, emotional, and social support. My background as an immigrant and a single mother has shaped who I am today and has given me a deep understanding of resilience, patience, and perseverance. Throughout my life, I have had to overcome challenges such as adjusting to a new culture, navigating systems that were unfamiliar, and balancing family responsibilities while working toward my educational goals. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to helping others who face barriers in their own lives. My desire to work in education, especially with individuals who have special needs, comes from my belief that every student deserves the opportunity to learn in a way that fits their unique strengths and challenges. I understand that learning is not one-size-fits-all, and students who require special education services often need individualized support, encouragement, and structure to reach their full potential. I want to be an educator who recognizes those differences and responds with compassion, creativity, and patience. In my future career, I plan to make a positive social impact by creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where students with special needs feel valued and understood. I want to focus on building strong relationships with my students, because I believe trust and connection are essential for learning and growth. I also hope to collaborate with families, counselors, and support staff to ensure that each student receives the resources and accommodations they need to succeed academically and emotionally. Additionally, I plan to advocate for students with special needs by promoting awareness, inclusion, and equity within the school system. I want to help break down stereotypes and misunderstandings about special education by encouraging empathy and respect among peers and staff. I believe that when schools foster inclusive environments, all students benefit—not just those receiving services. Ultimately, my goal is to make a lasting impact by helping students with special needs develop confidence, independence, and essential life skills. I want to be part of a system that empowers students rather than limits them, and I am committed to being an educator who supports every child’s right to learn, grow, and succeed regardless of their challenges. Ultimately, my goal is to empower students with special needs to develop confidence, independence, and life skills that will serve them beyond the classroom. I want them to feel capable, valued, and prepared for their future, whether that includes further education, employment, or independent living. I am committed to becoming an educator who not only teaches academic content but also helps shape a more inclusive, supportive, and equitable educational environment for all students.
Star Farm Scholarship for LGBTQ+ Students
I am currently pursuing studies in education because I am passionate about working with K–12 students and helping them build strong academic foundations as well as confidence in themselves. My plan is to continue studying education with the goal of becoming a certified teacher, most likely in elementary or secondary education. I chose this path because I want to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives, especially those who face challenges similar to the ones I experienced as an immigrant and as someone who had to adapt to a new educational system. I understand how important it is for students to have educators who are patient, supportive, and culturally aware. I want to be that kind of teacher—someone who not only teaches academic content but also helps students feel seen, capable, and valued. Regarding my experience in the LGBTQ+ community, I want to share that I deeply respect and support inclusivity, acceptance, and equal rights for all individuals. While I prefer to keep my personal journey private, I strongly believe that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and free to be themselves in educational spaces and in the community. As someone who hopes to work in education, I am committed to creating a classroom environment where diversity is embraced and where students of all identities feel welcomed and supported. I believe that representation, kindness, and understanding can make a lasting difference in a student’s life. I do see myself as someone who will give back to the community. In fact, this is one of my main motivations for pursuing a career in education. I want to contribute not only by teaching, but also by supporting families and students beyond the classroom. I hope to be involved in school and community programs that help bridge gaps for students who need additional academic, emotional, or financial support. My goal is to help create opportunities where students feel encouraged to succeed regardless of their background or circumstances. Financially, I am a single mother of two and come from a low-income household. Supporting my family while pursuing my education has been challenging, especially when balancing tuition, school supplies, transportation, and everyday expenses. There are many moments where financial stress can make it difficult to focus fully on my studies. A scholarship would significantly ease this burden and allow me to dedicate more time and energy to completing my education and achieving my career goals. It would also bring me closer to my long-term goal of becoming an educator who gives back to the community and supports students in meaningful, lasting ways.
    Future Nonprofit Leaders Award
I want to pursue a career in the nonprofit sector because I am deeply motivated by service, equity, and the opportunity to create meaningful change in communities that are often underserved or overlooked. Throughout my life experiences as an immigrant, a parent, and someone who has worked closely with students and families, I have seen how limited access to resources can affect a person’s ability to succeed. I have also seen how powerful it can be when support systems are in place—whether that is educational support, mentorship, food assistance, or access to mental health services. These experiences have shaped my belief that nonprofits play a critical role in filling the gaps that traditional systems sometimes cannot fully address. What draws me most to nonprofit work is the focus on people rather than profit. I am inspired by organizations that prioritize impact over financial gain and that are committed to serving communities based on need, dignity, and respect. I want to be part of that mission-driven environment where every effort is directed toward improving lives, strengthening families, and building opportunities for long-term success. I also value the collaborative nature of nonprofit work, where partnerships between schools, community organizations, and local agencies can create more holistic support systems for individuals. In my own experience working in education and supporting students, I have seen how many challenges extend beyond the classroom. Students often face issues at home related to income, language barriers, or lack of access to basic resources. These challenges directly impact academic performance and emotional well-being. I want my work in the nonprofit sector to help address these broader needs, not just the academic side of a student’s life. By supporting programs that provide mentorship, family engagement, after-school services, and community resources, I hope to help create environments where students and families feel supported in every aspect of their lives. I also hope to advocate for equity and inclusion, especially for immigrant families and low-income communities. Many families are unaware of the resources available to them or face barriers in accessing those services. I want to help bridge that gap by improving communication, outreach, and trust between organizations and the communities they serve. I believe that when people feel informed and supported, they are more empowered to take advantage of opportunities that can change their lives. Ultimately, I hope my work in the nonprofit sector will contribute to long-lasting, positive change by helping individuals and families access the tools they need to thrive. My goal is not just to provide temporary assistance, but to support systems that build independence, confidence, and resilience within the community.
    Vito Martino Memorial Scholarship
I came to the United States as an immigrant with the hope of building a more stable life and creating opportunities that were not always available to me in my country of origin. My journey, like many immigrant experiences, was not easy. It involved adjusting to a new culture, learning how to navigate systems that were unfamiliar, and trying to find my place while also supporting my family. There were moments of uncertainty, especially with language barriers and limited access to resources, but those challenges shaped me into a more determined and resilient person. One of the most difficult parts of my experience was realizing how much knowledge and confidence it takes to succeed in a new educational and social system. I often had to learn things the hard way, without clear guidance or support. I saw firsthand how overwhelming it can feel when you do not fully understand the language or expectations in school or work settings. However, those struggles also taught me persistence. I learned to advocate for myself, ask questions, and keep moving forward even when things felt difficult or discouraging. As I adapted to life in the United States, I began to deeply appreciate the value of education. I saw it as more than just academics—it became a pathway to independence, stability, and opportunity. Education is what allows individuals and families to grow and build better futures. I also began to notice the important role that teachers play in shaping students’ lives. A supportive educator can make a significant difference, especially for students who are learning English, adjusting to a new environment, or facing personal challenges at home. My desire to become an educator comes directly from my personal experiences as an immigrant and as a parent. I want to be the kind of teacher who understands what it feels like to struggle, to feel behind, or to feel uncertain in a classroom. I want my students to know that their background does not limit their potential. Instead, it can be a source of strength and perspective. I hope to create a classroom environment where every student feels safe, respected, and encouraged to succeed. As a mother of two, I am also very aware of how important education is in shaping a child’s future. I want to be actively involved in K–12 education so that I can help students build strong academic foundations while also supporting their emotional growth. I believe that learning should be accessible and meaningful for all students, regardless of their language, income level, or background. Ultimately, my immigrant story has shaped my values, my resilience, and my purpose. It has given me a strong desire to give back by becoming an educator who not only teaches academic content, but also inspires confidence, hope, and lifelong learning in every student I work with.
Poster Studio Express Visual Education Scholarship
The curriculum standard I chose for this design is a middle school science standard focused on the water cycle and how energy from the sun drives changes in the states of matter, including evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. I selected this standard because it is a foundational concept in Earth science that students must understand before moving on to more complex topics such as weather patterns, climate systems, and environmental science. It is also a concept that students often struggle with when it is taught only through text, making it ideal for a strong visual learning approach. The visual elements in my design were intentionally selected to improve comprehension and long-term retention of the concept. Color theory plays an important role in guiding student attention and supporting understanding. I used cool colors such as blues and purples to represent water in its liquid and solid states, while warm colors like yellow and orange represent the sun and heat energy. This contrast helps students immediately distinguish between energy sources and water processes. Consistent color coding for each stage of the water cycle also helps students associate specific colors with specific vocabulary terms, making recall easier during assessments. The layout of the design follows a circular flow pattern, mirroring the continuous nature of the water cycle. This arrangement helps students understand that the process does not have a beginning or end, but rather is ongoing. Arrows are used to clearly show movement from one stage to another, reducing confusion and supporting sequential thinking. The information is spaced evenly to avoid visual overload, allowing students to focus on one stage at a time while still seeing the full system as a connected whole. Typography was chosen carefully to improve readability and emphasize key vocabulary. Bold headings highlight important terms such as “Evaporation,” “Condensation,” and “Precipitation,” while simpler body text provides short, clear explanations. A clean sans-serif font was selected because it is easier for students to read quickly, especially for English learners or students with reading difficulties. The consistent font hierarchy helps students distinguish between main ideas and supporting details. Imagery also plays a critical role in supporting understanding. Visual icons such as clouds, water droplets, the sun, and arrows provide immediate context for each stage of the water cycle. These images help students form mental connections between abstract scientific processes and real-world examples. By pairing visuals with short definitions, students are more likely to retain information and recall it later. Visual learning is critical in modern K–12 classrooms because students today are highly visual learners who are constantly exposed to multimedia content. Many students process information more effectively when it is presented through images, diagrams, and interactive elements rather than text alone. Visual learning also supports diverse learners, including English language learners and students with learning differences, by reducing language barriers and making content more accessible. In addition, visual design increases engagement and helps students stay focused longer, which is essential in an era where attention spans are increasingly divided. Overall, strong visual design transforms complex academic concepts into clear, engaging, and memorable learning experiences.
Chris Jackson Computer Science Education Scholarship
How did you get interested in pursuing a computer science degree? My interest in pursuing a computer science degree developed through my experience working at Geek Squad for nine years and being exposed to technology in real-world situations. I regularly helped people troubleshoot devices, solve technical issues, and understand how to use technology in their daily lives. Over time, I realized I was not only fixing problems but also teaching people how technology works. That experience made me curious about what was happening behind the systems I was supporting. I wanted to go beyond basic troubleshooting and understand programming, systems design, and how technology is built. Working in a school district for the past five years has also shown me how important technology is in education and how digital skills can open doors for students, especially those from underserved communities. This inspired me to formally pursue computer science so I can combine my technical experience with education. What is your goal or dream job after receiving your degree? My goal is to become a teacher who specializes in computer science or technology education. I want to bring real-world experience into the classroom and teach students not only how to use technology, but how to understand and create it. I also hope to help bridge the gap for students who may not otherwise have access to strong technology education. Long term, I would like to contribute to developing programs that introduce students to coding, digital literacy, and career pathways in technology. My dream is to empower students to see themselves in STEM fields, regardless of their background or circumstances. Why do you feel you are the best candidate for receiving this scholarship? I believe I am a strong candidate for this scholarship because of my combination of professional experience, personal background, and commitment to education. I have nine years of experience in technology through Geek Squad, five years working in a school district, and daily experience supporting students and educators in a school setting. These experiences have given me both technical knowledge and a deep understanding of the challenges students face academically and personally. As a single mother of two and someone from a low-income background, I also understand the importance of education as a pathway to stability and opportunity. I am highly motivated to complete my degree and use it to give back to my community. This scholarship would not only support my education but also help me continue working toward my goal of becoming a teacher who inspires students to believe in their own potential and future success.
Dr. Connie M. Reece Future Teacher Scholarship
What inspired me to become a teacher is a combination of my personal experiences, my career in technology, and my work within a school district, all of which have shown me how powerful education can be in changing someone’s future. For nine years, I worked at Geek Squad, where I developed strong technical and problem-solving skills. More importantly, I learned how to work with people from all walks of life—many who were frustrated, overwhelmed, or unsure how to navigate technology. I realized that my role was not just to fix devices, but to teach. When I took the time to explain things clearly and patiently, I saw people gain confidence in themselves. That experience made me understand how impactful it is when someone truly learns something new instead of just having it done for them. It also showed me that patience, communication, and empathy are just as important as technical knowledge when helping others succeed. In addition, I have worked for a school district for the past five years. Being in that environment has been one of the most influential parts of my journey. Working closely alongside teachers, staff, and students has given me a front-row view of the dedication, patience, and passion it takes to help students succeed. Seeing teachers go above and beyond every day—often with limited resources but unlimited heart—has been incredibly motivating and has played a major role in inspiring me to pursue teaching myself. I have also seen how even small moments of encouragement from a teacher can completely change a student’s attitude and effort, which made me realize how meaningful this profession truly is. I also currently work in a school environment, which has deepened my desire even more. Being surrounded by students daily has shown me how much they need encouragement, structure, and adults who believe in them. I’ve seen students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they lack support or someone who takes the time to connect with them. That realization is what pushed me toward teaching as a long-term goal. I want to be someone who students feel comfortable approaching, someone who listens and helps them feel seen and valued. As a single mother of two and someone who comes from a low-income background, I also understand the challenges many students face outside the classroom. I know what it feels like to have responsibilities, stress, and obstacles that can make education difficult to prioritize. Because of that, I want to be the kind of teacher who not only teaches academic content but also understands and supports students as whole individuals. I want my classroom to be a place where students feel safe, respected, and encouraged to keep going even when things are difficult. In my classroom, I plan to use my experiences in technology to make learning engaging and practical, showing students how what they learn connects to real-life opportunities. I also want to incorporate hands-on learning and real-world examples to help students stay interested and understand the purpose behind their education. Beyond academics, I want to help students build confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience that they can carry into their future careers and lives. Ultimately, I want to inspire students the same way I was inspired—to believe that their background does not define their future, and that with support, consistency, and effort, they can achieve more than they imagined.

Through learning about service-related PTSD and the experiences of veterans who live with it, I have developed a deeper understanding of how invisible injuries can affect every aspect of a person’s life. Unlike physical wounds, PTSD is often not immediately visible, yet it can deeply influence emotions, thoughts, relationships, and daily functioning. I have learned that it can show up in many ways, including difficulty sleeping, heightened anxiety, emotional numbness, irritability, and challenges with trust or connection. These effects are not signs of weakness, but rather responses to experiences that were overwhelming and life-altering. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that healing from PTSD is not linear. Recovery is a long process that looks different for every individual. There may be moments of progress followed by setbacks, and both are part of healing. I have come to understand that patience is essential—not only for those experiencing PTSD, but also for the people supporting them. Recovery requires time, consistency, and environments that feel safe and supportive. I have also learned that many veterans struggle silently. Within military culture, values such as strength, endurance, and resilience are deeply embedded. While these traits are powerful, they can sometimes make it difficult for individuals to acknowledge emotional pain or seek help. I have realized that asking for support is not a failure of strength, but rather a courageous step toward recovery. It takes strength to face trauma directly and to accept assistance when needed. Another significant insight I have gained is the impact of stigma surrounding PTSD. Misunderstanding can lead to judgment, isolation, and hesitation to seek treatment. I have learned that education and open conversations are critical in changing these perceptions. When communities better understand PTSD, they are more likely to respond with empathy rather than stigma, which can encourage veterans to reach out sooner and more confidently. If given the opportunity to use my experience to help others, I would focus on being a source of support, understanding, and advocacy. I would strive to create spaces where veterans feel safe sharing their experiences without fear of judgment. I would also aim to help connect individuals with mental health resources, peer support networks, and veteran services that can assist in their recovery. Sometimes, even simple actions such as listening, checking in, or offering consistent support can make a meaningful difference in someone’s healing journey. Ultimately, I hope to use what I have learned to help reduce stigma and promote compassion toward those living with PTSD. My goal is to contribute to a culture where veterans feel seen, heard, and supported, and where seeking help is viewed as a strength. I believe that with understanding, community, and access to care, healing is possible and veterans can rebuild hope, stability, and purpose in their lives.

One project I am especially passionate about comes from my combined experience working in technology support at Geek Squad for nine years and my current role working at a school. Across both environments, I have been able to support people in meaningful ways by helping them understand, access, and confidently use technology that is essential to their daily lives. During my time at Geek Squad, I worked on many technology support projects, but one of the most impactful was assisting customers with full device setups, data transfers, and system recovery after hardware failures or software issues. Many customers would come in stressed or overwhelmed because they had lost access to important files, schoolwork, or business information. I was responsible for diagnosing the issue, recovering data when possible, setting up new devices, and ensuring everything was properly secured and functional before the customer left. This process required patience, technical skill, and attention to detail, but what made it meaningful was seeing the relief and gratitude from customers once their technology was restored and working again. In addition to Geek Squad, my current work at a school has given me a new perspective on how essential technology is in education. I support staff and students with daily technology needs, including device troubleshooting, login issues, classroom technology setup, and ensuring that systems run smoothly so instruction is not interrupted. Schools rely heavily on technology for instruction, testing, communication, and administration, and I have seen firsthand how even small technical issues can significantly impact learning. Being able to resolve these issues quickly helps teachers stay focused on instruction and allows students to continue learning without unnecessary disruptions. Working in both environments has shown me how deeply technology is integrated into people’s lives, whether in education or personal use. It has also shown me that many individuals feel intimidated by technology, and they often need patient guidance and clear explanations. I take pride in being someone who can bridge that gap—someone who not only solves technical problems but also helps people feel more confident and comfortable using technology. Technology inspires me because it is constantly evolving and creates endless opportunities for growth and connection. My experience in both a retail technical support setting and a school environment has strengthened my passion for helping others through technology. It has motivated me to continue developing my skills so I can support more people, improve access to reliable systems, and contribute to environments where technology enhances learning, productivity, and communication.

Being a single parent has significantly shaped my educational journey and the person I am today. Becoming a parent at a young age completely changed my perspective on life and forced me to mature quickly. I learned early on that every decision I make affects not only my future, but also the future of my child. While balancing school, work, finances, and parenting responsibilities has been challenging, it has also motivated me to pursue my education with greater determination and purpose. There have been many moments when continuing my education felt overwhelming. Managing assignments, deadlines, work schedules, and caring for my child at the same time often requires sacrifice and long hours. There were times when I doubted myself or felt exhausted, but giving up was never an option. My child became my biggest source of motivation. I want to provide a stable and successful future for us while also showing my child the value of hard work, perseverance, and education. Every step I take toward earning my degree is a step toward creating better opportunities for my family. Being a single parent has taught me many valuable lessons that have strengthened both my academic and personal growth. I have developed strong time management and organizational skills because I must carefully balance multiple responsibilities every day. I have learned patience, resilience, and how to stay focused under pressure. These experiences have helped me become more disciplined and determined in reaching my goals. I have also learned how important it is to ask for help when needed and to appreciate the support systems around me, whether from family, friends, professors, or mentors. In addition, being a single parent has given me a deeper sense of empathy and compassion for others who are facing hardships in their own lives. It has taught me not to judge people based on their struggles because everyone is fighting battles that others may not see. These experiences have shaped my character and inspired me to pursue a future where I can help others and make a positive difference in my community. My journey has not been easy, but it has given me a strong sense of purpose. Education represents more than just personal achievement to me; it represents stability, independence, and the opportunity to create a better life for my child. I hope to use my education and career to make a positive impact on others while also setting an example for my child that obstacles do not define a person’s future. Instead, challenges can become motivation to grow stronger and work harder. Although being a single parent comes with difficulties, it has shaped me into someone who is resilient, hardworking, compassionate, and deeply motivated to succeed. My experiences have taught me that even during life’s hardest moments, determination, perseverance, and hope can lead to growth, success, and meaningful achievement.

What brings me the greatest sense of joy, purpose, and pride when I think about my education and career is knowing that I am working toward creating a better future for my children and myself. Returning to college as a 31-year-old single mother of two is not easy, but it gives me a sense of purpose because I know I am building opportunities that can positively impact my family’s future for years to come. One of the things that brings me the most pride is being able to show my children the importance of perseverance and education. I want them to grow up seeing that challenges and setbacks do not define a person’s future. Even though I had to pause my education in the past due to financial hardships and family responsibilities, I never gave up on my dream of earning a degree. Continuing my education now represents growth, resilience, and determination. I also find joy in learning new things, improving myself, and working toward a career that will allow me to help others while creating stability for my family. Through volunteering and being involved in school and community events, I have realized how meaningful it is to support and encourage others. I hope my future career will allow me to continue making a positive impact in my community while also providing my children with security and opportunities I did not always have myself. Most importantly, pursuing my education gives me hope. It reminds me that it is never too late to continue growing, improving, and working toward your goals. Knowing that my hard work can inspire my children and create a better future for my family gives me the greatest sense of purpose and fulfillment. I also hope that my journey can inspire other parents or nontraditional students who may feel discouraged about returning to school later in life. Many people face obstacles such as financial hardship, family responsibilities, or self-doubt, and I want others to know that those challenges do not mean their goals are out of reach. Pursuing higher education has reminded me that growth is possible at any stage in life with determination and persistence. In the future, I want to continue building a career that allows me to support my family while also making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Knowing that my education can create long-term stability, open new opportunities, and positively impact future generations gives me a deep sense of pride and motivation to continue moving forward no matter how difficult the journey may be.

Growing up in a single-parent and low-income household taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of hard work from a very young age. I watched my mother work hard to provide for our family despite financial struggles and challenges. Those experiences taught me how to stay strong during difficult times and motivated me to build a better future for myself and my children. As a 31-year-old single mother of two, I now understand even more deeply the sacrifices that come with trying to create stability while balancing work, parenting, and education. Although I had to pause my college education in the past to support my family financially, I never gave up on my goals. Today, I am actively working toward returning to college so I can earn a degree and create long-term opportunities for my family. My life experiences have inspired me to positively impact my community by supporting and encouraging others who may be facing similar struggles. Through volunteering at school and community events, including helping organize educational activities like STEAM Night, I have seen how important encouragement, leadership, and community support can be for children and families. I plan to use my education and experiences to continue helping others while also setting an example for my children that challenges do not define your future. Instead, perseverance, education, and determination can create opportunities for growth and success.

I grew up in a single-family household where I learned from an early age what hard work, sacrifice, and resilience truly looked like. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for our family and did everything she could to make sure we had what we needed despite financial struggles and difficult circumstances. Watching her manage responsibilities on her own taught me the importance of perseverance, responsibility, and staying strong even during the hardest moments. Although life was not always easy, my mother always encouraged me to continue believing in myself and to value education as a way to create a better future. Growing up in a single-parent household also meant learning about sacrifice at a young age. There were moments when resources were limited, and I could see the emotional and financial pressure my mother carried while trying to keep our family stable. Even when she was exhausted or overwhelmed, she continued pushing forward for us. Seeing her strength inspired me to become independent, compassionate, and determined to overcome obstacles in my own life. Her example taught me that true strength comes from continuing to move forward despite challenges and uncertainty. After high school, I began attending college with hopes of building a successful future for myself and my family. However, life circumstances made continuing my education difficult. I had to step away from school in order to work and help support my family financially. Balancing responsibilities and financial stress affected my academic journey, and eventually my education had to be placed on hold. Although that period of my life was difficult and disappointing, it also taught me resilience and the importance of never giving up on long-term goals. Today, I am a 31-year-old single mother of two children, and my experiences growing up have greatly shaped the way I approach both motherhood and education. Raising children while balancing work, financial responsibilities, and returning to school has given me an even deeper appreciation for everything my mother sacrificed for our family. It has also motivated me to work hard to create better opportunities and stability for my own children. Growing up in a single-family household shaped me into someone who values perseverance, empathy, education, and hard work. My experiences have taught me that challenges do not define a person’s future. Instead, they can become motivation to continue striving for growth and success. Pursuing higher education is important to me because I want to build a stable future for my children, create opportunities that were not always available to me, and show my children that it is never too late to continue pursuing your dreams. Through education, I hope to create lasting change for my family and inspire my children to believe in themselves no matter what obstacles they may face in life.

One of the most meaningful volunteering events I helped organize was a STEAM Night at a local school. The event was created to encourage children and families to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through fun and interactive activities. Being part of organizing this event allowed me to give back to my community by helping create an educational and welcoming environment where students could learn, participate, and feel inspired about their future. During the event, families and students were able to participate in hands-on activities that encouraged creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. I assisted with organizing activities, supporting families during the event, helping things run smoothly, and making sure students felt encouraged to participate. It was rewarding to see children become excited about learning and to watch parents engage alongside them. Many students may not always have access to opportunities that make learning feel exciting and interactive, so being able to contribute to an event that promoted education in a positive way was very meaningful to me. Volunteering through events like STEAM Night has shown me the importance of community involvement and leadership through service. I believe leadership is not only about directing others, but about being willing to step up, help where needed, and create opportunities that benefit others. Through service, leaders can inspire confidence, encourage growth, and bring people together. Supporting educational events helps children feel motivated and reminds families that their community cares about their success and future. As a single mother returning to college, volunteering has also helped me grow personally. It has strengthened my communication, organization, and teamwork skills while allowing me to set a positive example for my children. I want my children to grow up understanding the importance of helping others, being involved in their community, and using their knowledge and experiences to make a positive impact. Organizing and participating in STEAM Night reminded me that even small acts of service can inspire and uplift others. Through both education and community involvement, I hope to continue creating opportunities that encourage growth, learning, and support for future generations. This experience also reinforced my passion for education and community service. Seeing children feel proud of themselves while learning something new reminded me how important supportive environments are for young students. Many children gain confidence when they are encouraged to ask questions, explore their creativity, and participate without fear of failure. Being part of an event that promoted curiosity and learning showed me how powerful community support can be in shaping a child’s future. It inspired me to continue serving others while pursuing my own educational goals so I can make an even greater impact in my community in the future.
