Ella’s Gift Scholarship Essay
For most of my life, I have struggled with mental health and substance abuse. Recovery did not come easy for me; it took three trips to rehab before it finally stuck. The last time, I stayed for eight months, and that is where everything started to change. I finally accepted that recovery was not just about getting clean, it was about rebuilding my life, piece by piece. I graduated from drug court in 2017, and that moment was a turning point for me. I made a promise to myself that I would never go back to the life I fought so hard to leave behind.
Depression is something I still live with, but I have learned how to manage it in healthier ways. I discovered that staying busy and having purpose helps me more than anything. During my recovery, I found a love for art and woodworking. Creating something with my hands gave me a sense of peace and pride that I had not felt in years. When COVID hit, I turned that passion into a small business, which helped me stay grounded and focused during a time when the world felt uncertain. It also reminded me how capable I was when I stayed committed and put my energy into something positive.
Today, I am proud to say I have been in recovery for almost ten years. I am also a full-time student, a single mom, and a caregiver for my mother. Life is busy, but it is good. I am currently working toward my bachelor’s degree in construction management, and my goal is to become a construction project manager. I love the construction industry because it is about creating something lasting, something you can stand back and say, “I built that.” It is a lot like recovery. Both require patience, teamwork, and building a solid foundation before anything else can stand.
Education is a big part of my recovery story. When I decided to go back to school, it was a way to prove to myself that it is never too late to start over. I want to build a career where I can continue to learn and grow within a company that values hard work and integrity. My daughters are my biggest motivation. I want them to see that no matter how hard life gets, you can always rebuild and become stronger than before.
I stay on track in my recovery by helping others who are ready to get their life back. Giving back keeps me grounded and reminds me how far I have come. I talk to women who are new to recovery, and I try to give them hope that it is possible to create a better life. Spending time with my daughters, working hard, and staying focused on my goals help keep me balanced. I still check in with my therapist and attend support groups when I can, but life is full these days with school, work, and parenting. I have learned that recovery does not have to look the same for everyone, it is about doing what keeps you healthy and moving forward.
Winning this scholarship would mean so much to me. It would not only help me financially but also remind me that my journey and hard work are worth something. The struggles I have faced have taught me resilience, responsibility, and compassion; qualities I bring into everything I do. This scholarship would help me continue my education and give me the chance to build a stable future for myself and my daughters.
Like Ella, I have fought hard to overcome my challenges and find purpose through the pain. I believe the best way to honor that kind of spirit is to keep pushing forward, to never give up, and to use your story to inspire others. I want to continue doing that every day, through my recovery, my education, and my career in construction. We do recover!
Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship
My journey to higher education has not been a straight path, but every step has taught me resilience, determination, and the importance of growth. At 44 years old, I am a single mother of two and a first-generation college student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in construction management. Returning to school later in life has been both challenging and rewarding, and my personal experiences have shaped not only my academic goals but also the values I live by and the future I am working toward.
For much of my life, I had to learn how to navigate challenges without a clear roadmap. Balancing work, raising children, and pursuing an education has required me to stay disciplined and focused even when it felt overwhelming. One of the most transformative parts of my journey has been my decision to build a new foundation for myself over a decade ago. Remaining committed to that path has taught me perseverance and accountability—qualities that influence every decision I make today. These experiences have shown my children that no matter how difficult circumstances may be, it is possible to create a better future through determination and hard work.
These lessons have directly shaped my personal values. I believe deeply in integrity, responsibility, and service to others. Education is not only about bettering my own life; it is also about opening doors for others. I want my children, and especially other women who may feel overlooked in male-dominated fields, to see that there is space for them in industries like construction. Representation matters, and I want to be a part of paving the way for more women to enter and thrive in this profession.
Construction has always appealed to me because I love working with my hands and using my creativity to solve problems. To me, construction is more than just building structures—it is about creating spaces where communities can grow and thrive. My career aspiration is to combine my artistic abilities with the technical skills I am learning in school to contribute to projects that truly benefit people. Whether it is building affordable housing, schools, or community spaces, I want my work to reflect both quality and purpose.
Community service is central to this vision. I believe that the best projects are those that strengthen neighborhoods and have a lasting impact. By pursuing Construction Management, I hope to not only build physical structures but also contribute to stronger, more supportive communities.
This scholarship will play a crucial role in helping me reach these goals. As a full-time student with a 3.91 GPA, maintaining a balance between work, family, and academics, financial support makes a tremendous difference. The scholarships I have already received have alleviated the burden and enabled me to stay focused on excelling academically. Receiving this scholarship would provide additional stability and bring me closer to achieving my degree, which in turn will allow me to enter the field prepared to make a meaningful contribution.
I am grateful for the opportunity to share my journey. My path may not be traditional, but it has given me strength, perspective, and determination. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident I will be able to complete my degree and use my education to make a positive and lasting impact in both my community and the construction industry.
