This dream of being a doctor has been a part of me for as long as I can remember, but over time, it evolved into something so much more profound-a calling brought about by personal trials and an insatiable hunger to serve others. Medicine, for me, is not only the act of cognition and subsequent treatment of disease but also the emotional mending, uplifting, and standing with people in their most helplessly vulnerable moments. Becoming a doctor isn't just a profession but a lifelong purpose that gives meaning to everything I have been through. Growing up, my first role model in the field of medicine was my pediatrician. He treated more than symptoms; he brought hope to my family during times when that was most needed. He taught me what care is all about: not just the curing of bodies but nurturing spirits. From a young age, I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps and become a doctor who could offer much more than just medical solutions, giving patients hope and comfort. As I grew older, my view on healthcare began to evolve. I began to see that my own family and community were getting less regard in comparison to others because of their background. And over and over again, I saw firsthand that care was not equitable. The people I loved were talked over, dismissed, or denied the quality of care that they should have received. It really instilled in me a deeper desire to fight for equality in healthcare, as no one, regardless of race or background, should ever be treated as "less than" when it comes to matters of life and health. Growing up in a single-parent household, I knew financial struggles. Juggling work to keep myself in school while chasing my dream of becoming a doctor wasn't easy. Of course, there were times when it all felt just too much to bear. Instead of breaking me, though, these own particular challenges only strengthened my resolve. Every long shift and every sleepless night studying merely managed to further cement my commitment to this path for its own sake. These hardships have also given me something I value deeply—empathy. I know what it means to have to forego needed care simply because you cannot afford it, and I know the stress of trying to make your way through a health system that often doesn't see or prioritize you. These experiences will be my guide as I treat my future patients, not just as cases or conditions but as whole people with struggles, fears, and hopes of their own. I want to fight for them; assure them of receiving the kind and available care they need. Medicine has not come easy, but it has shaped me for battle in ensuring justice is meted out in healthcare. It is not just about personal fulfillment of my dream, but also a tribute to family and community support, everyone believing in me. I am ready to transform all the challenges I have faced into a lifetime commitment and mission of healing, uplifting, and empowering those in need, leaving no one behind. like

Travel is more than just a break from routine; it’s a transformative experience that can profoundly shape our lives. By exploring new environments, we uncover fresh perspectives, develop adaptability, and often gain a deeper connection to our roots, especially when those roots are distant or less familiar. One of the most significant ways travel transforms us is by broadening our perspectives. Immersing ourselves in different cultures challenges our preconceptions and expands our understanding. For instance, experiencing the vibrant customs and traditions of a place like the Bahamas helps us see the world through new lenses. This exposure fosters empathy and appreciation for diverse ways of life, enriching our view of the world and helping us understand the richness of human experience. Travel also enhances our adaptability. Navigating unfamiliar environments requires us to be flexible and resourceful. Learning to adjust to the relaxed pace of island life or handling unexpected changes during a journey builds resilience. For example, when I visited the Bahamas, adapting to the local customs and dealing with travel surprises taught me to handle the unexpected with confidence. These skills are valuable both during travel and in everyday life. Moreover, travel provides a unique opportunity to connect with our roots, particularly when those roots are not part of our daily experience. Most of my family, including myself, was born in the United States, and we often find ourselves distanced from our heritage. Visiting the Bahamas, where my family’s roots lie, offered a profound chance to explore and understand our background. Walking through neighborhoods where my ancestors once lived and meeting relatives who share our history gave me a deeper sense of identity. This personal exploration helped bridge the gap between our American upbringing and our family’s heritage, enriching my understanding of where I come from and strengthening my connection to my roots. In essence, travel transforms us by broadening our perspectives, enhancing our adaptability, and deepening our connection to our heritage. Each journey offers valuable lessons and experiences that help us grow, making us more aware of ourselves and the diverse world around us. For someone like me, who has often felt disconnected from my heritage, the opportunity to explore it firsthand while discovering new cultures exemplifies how travel can lead to profound personal development and a stronger sense of identity.

Every time I revisit Kamisama Kiss, also known as Kamisama Hajimemashita, I’m swept away by its irresistible charm and enchanting blend of romance, fantasy, and humor. There’s something endlessly captivating about how it perfectly mixes these elements while connecting to real-world themes and experiences. The show's ability to merge the fantastical with genuine emotional depth makes it a unique and enduring favorite for me. Watching Kamisama Kiss for the first time in 7th grade was a magical experience. It was my introduction to romance anime and opened my eyes to a whole new world of storytelling. Disney had already shaped my view of romance with its fairy tale endings and idealized love stories. These portrayals were enchanting but often felt distant from the complexities of real-life relationships. Kamisama Kiss offered a refreshing perspective by showing that love could be both fantastical and deeply rooted in real emotional struggles. The series presented romance as something that involves growth, challenges, and the journey toward mutual understanding, which broadened my view of what love could truly be. The relationship between Nanami and Tomoe stands out as a highlight of the series, especially given my background with Disney’s take on romance. Their evolving dynamic, filled with moments of tension, tenderness, and growth, offers a more realistic portrayal of love. This portrayal showed me that relationships are not always perfect or effortless; they require effort, patience, and resilience. This shift in perspective was significant for me as a young viewer, helping me appreciate the nuanced and sometimes challenging aspects of relationships. It allowed me to see love as a journey of deepening connections rather than just a series of idealized moments. I also love the catchy theme songs of Kamisama Kiss—they’re so infectious that I find myself singing along every time, especially during the second season. This playful and joyful aspect of the show enhances my emotional connection to it and adds to its overall charm. The humor and lighthearted moments, paired with the series’ more serious themes, remind me of the importance of finding joy and laughter, even amidst life's challenges. In essence, Kamisama Kiss combines elements of romance, fantasy, and humor with real-world themes of self-discovery and community impact. Its unique blend not only offers a fresh take on romance but also deepens my understanding of relationships, making it a series that continues to resonate with me deeply. Watching it for the first time in 7th grade, not only introduced me to the world of romance anime but also left an indelible mark on my heart, shaping my view of love in a meaningful way.

From the tender age of childhood, my life was profoundly influenced by the kindness and empathy of my pediatrician. Each visit to her office was not merely a routine check-up but an experience of being genuinely cared for and understood. She listened, comforted, and healed not just my ailments but my spirit. Through her, I first glimpse the profound impact a compassionate healthcare provider can have on a person's life. This realization planted a seed in my heart—a desire to one day provide care and comfort for others. Growing up in a single-parent household within a minority community, I witnessed firsthand the struggles my family and others faced in accessing adequate healthcare. Friends and family members often experienced neglect or mistreatment within the healthcare system, fueling a deep sense of injustice within me. These experiences didn't just evoke empathy; they ignited a fiery determination to become a force for change, to fight for those whose voices are too often unheard. Pursuing a major in health sciences was a testament to my commitment. I sought to unravel the mysteries of the human body, driven by a desire to understand the science that could one day enable me to heal. Each class, each lab, and each sleepless night spent studying was a step toward a dream far greater than mine. It was a step toward becoming a pediatrician who would treat illnesses and advocate for systemic changes to dismantle health disparities. Volunteering at Hope Helps Inc.'s food pantry and thrift store was more than just a way to give back; it was an opportunity to connect with my community, to understand their struggles and needs on a deeper level. These experiences deepened my commitment to service and fueled my desire to effect change. My campus involvement further solidified this commitment. As a member of the Black Student Union, I advocated for minority students' needs, fostering a more inclusive campus environment. Joining the Mu Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta was transformative, allowing me to work with like-minded women on impactful community service projects. These activities were integral to my journey, shaping my understanding of leadership and community engagement. My goal to pursue a master’s in biomedical sciences is driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence. I want to be the best pediatrician I can be, not just in medical knowledge but in advocating for my patients and community. During my planned gap years before medical school, I aim to deepen my research and clinical experiences, equipping myself with the skills needed to advocate for health equity. As a pediatrician, I envision a practice where every child receives the same care and compassion I experienced. However, my vision extends beyond individual care. I aspire to create a just and equitable healthcare system, addressing health disparities and advocating for policies that ensure everyone has access to quality care. In every step of my journey, from the classroom to the community, I carry with me the lessons of empathy, resilience, and determination. My drive towards a career in public service is not just a professional aspiration; it is a calling deeply embedded in my heart. I am committed to using my education and my passion to make a difference, to heal, to advocate, and to ensure that every individual is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. This is not just my career path; it is my life's mission.

My name is Jessica Harris, and my commitment to making a meaningful impact in healthcare, specifically in pediatrics, stems from witnessing the challenges and disparities in the healthcare system that many minority communities face. From feeling overlooked to encountering instances of malpractice and neglect, these experiences ignited my passion to become a compassionate and dedicated healthcare professional who can advocate for and provide quality care to those who are often marginalized. My journey has been characterized by a deep dedication to education and community involvement. From a young age, I found joy and purpose in sports, playing basketball, and participating in track and field. These activities taught me valuable lessons in teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, while also honing my leadership skills and work ethic. In college, I extended my commitment beyond academics by taking on leadership roles in the Black Student Union and participating in the Royalty Dance Troupe, where I helped foster a sense of community and cultural pride. Joining the Mu Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta in the fall of 2023 was a significant step for me, driven by a desire to collaborate with like-minded women to uplift our community. Volunteering at Hope Helps Inc.'s food pantry and thrift store has also been profoundly rewarding, reinforcing my commitment to service and support for those in need. My educational journey is fueled by a desire to address and reduce health disparities within minority communities. I am currently pursuing a master’s in biomedical sciences, which will serve as a stepping stone toward medical school. During my gap years before medical school, I plan to expand my research and clinical experiences to become a well-rounded applicant. My goal is to use my education to become a pediatrician who not only delivers excellent medical care but also advocates for equitable healthcare access and quality for all children, regardless of their background. My interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) is multifaceted. I have always been fascinated by the biological sciences, particularly in understanding how the human body functions and how innovative research and technology can improve health outcomes. My involvement in research projects focused on antibiotic resistance has demonstrated the profound impact scientific advancements can have on medicine and patient care. Through my education and career, I hope to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical healthcare applications, ensuring that advancements in medicine are accessible and beneficial to all, especially underserved populations. My ultimate aim is to inspire and mentor future generations, showing them that with dedication and passion, they too can make a significant impact in the world of STEAM and beyond.

If I could make one significant change to our healthcare system, it would be to establish a universal standard for culturally competent care. This idea is deeply rooted in my own experiences as a person of color. Growing up, I saw firsthand how the lack of quality healthcare affected the lives of people around me, particularly within minority communities. I remember the frustration and helplessness my friends and family felt when they faced insurmountable barriers. These experiences have profoundly shaped my understanding of how important it is for healthcare providers to connect with their patients genuinely. Culturally competent care means more than just understanding different cultural practices; it’s about truly respecting and addressing the diverse backgrounds of patients. I believe that medical education needs to incorporate extensive training on how to engage with patients from various cultural backgrounds. This training should go beyond surface-level awareness and teach healthcare professionals to build meaningful relationships with their patients. I’ve seen how a little empathy and understanding can make a world of difference, and I believe that every healthcare provider should be equipped to offer this kind of care. Moreover, creating standardized protocols for culturally competent care is essential. These guidelines would help ensure that healthcare providers can navigate cultural differences with sensitivity and respect. For instance, having clear protocols on how to handle language barriers and cultural practices would make interactions smoother and more effective. It’s about making sure that no matter who you are or where you come from, you receive care that is respectful and tailored to your needs. Partnering with community organizations can also play a crucial role in this change. These organizations often have a deep understanding of the challenges faced by underserved populations. By working together, healthcare providers can better address these challenges and create outreach programs that truly meet the needs of these communities. I’ve seen the impact of community support and believe that building strong partnerships can help bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers. Ultimately, the goal of implementing culturally competent care is to create a healthcare environment where everyone feels seen and valued. It’s about ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their background, have access to the care they need and deserve. This change would not only improve the patient experience but also contribute to a more compassionate and fair healthcare system. This is why I am passionate about making this change, and I believe it’s a crucial step toward a more equitable future for healthcare.

Many adolescents dread their annual doctor visits—the physical exams, needles, and awkward questions. However, I always looked forward to mine, eagerly anticipating whether I had grown taller or maintained a healthy weight. Although vaccines were less enjoyable, the kindness of the medical staff, particularly my primary pediatrician, made the experience more bearable. To him, I was not just another patient but a person. He engaged in conversations about school, asked about my hobbies, and used humor to lighten the mood. His concern for both my physical and mental health left a lasting impression, inspiring me to extend this personalized approach to others. This realization made me understand the need for more professionals who treat patients as unique individuals rather than mere cases. I felt compelled to bridge that gap and contribute to a more empathetic healthcare experience. Witnessing firsthand the health disparities that disproportionately affect minorities in my community profoundly shaped my commitment to a career in medicine. Growing up, I saw how limited access to quality healthcare could significantly impact the well-being of my friends and neighbors. Many families faced barriers such as lack of insurance, financial constraints, and a shortage of culturally competent medical professionals. As a person of color, these challenges were not abstract concepts but tangible realities that affected those I cared about. These experiences highlighted the necessity for healthcare professionals who are not only skilled but also empathetic and attuned to the unique obstacles faced by underserved communities. This insight ignited my aspiration to pursue a career in medicine, driven by a commitment to bridge these gaps and advocate for high-quality, accessible care for every child, regardless of their background. Looking ahead, my short-term goal is to build on my current medical knowledge while gaining a strong foundation in research and clinical experience. My long-term goal is to become a pediatrician who advocates for both the mental and physical well-being of my patients, particularly those from minority backgrounds. Observing the mistreatment and neglect experienced by family members and friends from similar backgrounds has fostered a distrust between patients of color and the U.S. healthcare system. I aim to bridge that disconnect and ensure everyone has access to high-quality care, irrespective of their background. I am determined to transform my experiences into meaningful action by becoming a pediatrician focused on addressing health disparities in minority communities. By offering compassionate, culturally competent care, participating in community outreach, and advocating for policy improvements, I aspire to create a more equitable healthcare system and support future generations in overcoming challenges and reaching their full potential.

Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the challenges underserved communities faced, including my family's struggles to access quality healthcare. These experiences ignited my passion for helping others and fueled my unwavering commitment to community service. Seeing the disparities in healthcare sparked a determination within me to make a difference, inspiring me to advocate for mistreated individuals and serve those in need. I give back to my community through my involvement with Delta Sigma Theta, a community service organization known for its dedication to public service and social change. I joined the Mu Iota Chapter in the fall of 2023 to work with like-minded women to assist my local community. Founded in 1913 at Howard University by twenty-two visionary women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has a rich history of advocating for social justice, educational advancement, and economic empowerment. The organization has grown into one of the world's largest African American women's organizations, with over 1,000 chapters and more than 300,000 members globally. Delta Sigma Theta's impact includes initiatives such as voter registration drives, educational programs, and international aid projects. Through my involvement, I have participated in numerous initiatives focusing on education, health, and economic development. We have organized educational workshops that provide essential skills and knowledge to youth and adults alike, health fairs offering free screenings and vital health information to underserved communities, and fundraising events supporting scholarships and other community projects. As I move forward, I plan to transfer to a graduate chapter to continue this impactful work and further contribute to the organization's mission. Additionally, I volunteer with Hope Helps Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and reducing homelessness in Central Florida. My work with Hope Helps Inc. includes volunteering at their food pantry, where I help distribute essential groceries to families in need, and at their thrift store, where I sort donations to ensure that resources are available to support their various programs. These hands-on experiences have been incredibly rewarding and have reinforced my commitment to community service. Volunteering at the food pantry allows me to directly witness the impact of providing necessities to those struggling with food insecurity, offering them a sense of stability and dignity. Working at the thrift store has shown me how donated items can transform lives, funding critical services and programs that empower individuals to overcome hardship. Through these experiences, I have seen the great difference that community support and dedicated service can make, further motivating me to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of those in need. Looking to the future, I aim to make a lasting impact as a pediatrician focused on reducing health disparities within minority communities. I am passionate about providing high-quality healthcare to underserved populations and advocating for systemic changes that promote health equity. My journey through my master's program in biomedical sciences and medical school will equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to address these disparities head-on. I envision a future where I can combine my clinical expertise with my dedication to community service. By expanding my research and clinical experiences, I aim to contribute to developing innovative solutions that improve healthcare access and outcomes for all. Every child, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to thrive, and I am committed to being a catalyst for positive change in the lives of the families and communities I will serve.

As a Black woman, facing adversity is an inescapable part of life, both outside our community and within. We often confront the pressures of European beauty standards that judge us for the color of our skin, while also contending with societal biases that undervalue us simply because we are women. These challenges, though daunting and sometimes disheartening, have also been powerful catalysts for my strength and determination. Growing up in a single-parent household, my mother has been my greatest source of resilience. Watching her navigate the challenges of raising me and my younger sister alone instilled in me a profound sense of perseverance. She taught me how to face adversity head-on, stand firm in my beliefs, and never give up no matter how tough the road ahead may seem. Her unwavering dedication and constant support pushed me to excel in school, proving not only to others but to myself that I am capable of achieving great things despite the challenges I face. Living in a world that often tries to diminish our worth has taught me resilience. Every challenge has tested my strength, but I've learned to rely on my inner resolve, determination, and the support of my community. I've sought out mentors and role models who have faced similar struggles, finding inspiration and guidance in their experiences. Education has empowered me with the knowledge and skills to challenge inequities and advocate for change. I've also realized the importance of self-care and mental health, understanding that taking care of myself is crucial for maintaining the strength needed to overcome obstacles. The struggles we face have underscored the importance of perseverance. In moments of doubt, I’ve learned to dig deep and push past obstacles with determination. This tenacity isn't just personal but part of a legacy from generations of Black women who have triumphed against insurmountable odds. Their stories remind me that perseverance is key to overcoming any challenge. Community support has also been crucial, providing hope and solidarity in times of hardship. These shared bonds remind us that together, we can overcome even the toughest barriers. Instead of letting adversity break my spirit, I’ve let it fuel my growth. These challenges have shaped who I am today and given me a deep appreciation for the resilience and solidarity in our community. I'm committed to using my journey to inspire others, advocate for change, uplift those facing similar struggles, and continue breaking down barriers. In the future, I want to help my community by becoming a pediatrician who actively works to reduce health disparities among minorities. My goal is to provide compassionate, culturally competent care, ensuring every child, regardless of their background, gets the best possible medical treatment. I also plan to engage in community outreach programs, focusing on education and prevention to promote healthier lifestyles and improve overall well-being. By mentoring young Black women and advocating for policy changes, I hope to contribute to a more equitable and just healthcare system, empowering the next generation to overcome adversity and reach their full potential.

As the rhythmic beats pulsed through the air and the stage lights illuminated the room, I found myself in my element, leading the Royalty Dance Troupe's electrifying performance. This moment wasn't just about dance; it was a testament to my passion for fostering inclusivity and unity within the Black Student Union community. Throughout my journey at the University of Central Florida, I've had the privilege of immersing myself in various leadership roles that have not only shaped my growth but also made a tangible impact within the campus community. As Vice President and Director of the Royalty Dance Troupe within the Black Student Union, I assumed a multifaceted leadership position where I was entrusted with orchestrating a diverse array of events and initiatives aimed at fostering cultural awareness, unity, and celebration among students from different backgrounds. From conceptualizing and choreographing dynamic performances that showcased the rich tapestry of cultures represented within our community to organizing cultural showcases and festivals that served as platforms for artistic expression and intercultural dialogue, I sought to create inclusive spaces where individuals could embrace and celebrate their own cultural heritage while engaging with and learning from the diverse traditions and experiences of their peers. During my tenure as Membership Director and Assistant Director of the Royalty Dance Troupe, I focused on leadership by spearheading recruitment efforts and creating a supportive team environment. Recognizing the significance of diversity and representation, I implemented outreach strategies to attract talent from various backgrounds. Through personalized mentorship, I empowered each team member to embrace their strengths, fostering inclusivity and mutual respect. Simultaneously, as a Campus Representative for Men of Integrity, I assumed a proactive leadership role in facilitating discussions, organizing activities, and fostering personal and professional development among my peers. From hosting engaging workshops and seminars on topics ranging from leadership and career readiness to mental health and community service, I aimed to empower individuals to cultivate the skills, values, and relationships necessary for personal and professional growth. Through collaborative initiatives and community partnerships, I endeavored to instill a sense of purpose and civic responsibility within our organization, inspiring my fellow students to harness their collective potential and make a meaningful impact in their communities. Looking ahead, my vision for the future is rooted in my commitment to utilizing my leadership skills to enact positive change and foster inclusive communities. As I prepare to pursue my Master's in Biomedical Sciences in the fall, I am driven by the aspiration to become a pediatrician who passionately advocates for underrepresented groups. My goal is to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has equitable access to quality healthcare. In my envisioned role, I not only seek to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to my patients but also to actively address systemic barriers and disparities that disproportionately impact marginalized communities. Through my advocacy and professional endeavors, I aim to promote values of diversity, equity, and social justice in every aspect of my practice. Ultimately, I aspire to serve as a beacon of hope and empowerment for the next generation, inspiring others to join me in building a more equitable and inclusive future.
